Here are some brief notes about the more practical aspects of the changes to the IB MYP that are currently foreseen. Although some schools are piloting a few of them this year, the changes are still in the planning stage and have not yet been finally approved. Although the MYP is expanding about 12% per year, there are problems of incompatibility with some national systems, which often have prescribed choices that do not fit with the subject groups of the MYP octagon. And some schools cannot run the MYP because they don't have the resources to teach the 8 groups. Although the octagon will be retained, and many schools will still provide all 8 subject groups, students wi…

Do students in your school give personal gifts to their MYP teachers in appreciation of their services? In our school, students often give small symbolic gifts (flowers, cards, chocolates, paintings, personal items such as scarves, etc) to popular teachers at Christmas time and/or at the end of the school year. The class representatives also organise collections for the purchase of gift vouchers, and students are free to contribute to these if they wish. In China, it is traditional to give symbolic gifts on the PRC's National Teachers' Day (September 10). I'm sure that most teachers are completely impartial, but I know of one case in Kunming where a teacher actually told …

As you know, the IB programmes are continually reviewed and modified. Recent examples include the new Language subjects, the Group 3 Global Politics pilot, the new World Studies EE option, World Religions SL, and the revised Group 6 courses. A new Group 4 SL Science and Technology course is also being discussed. One of the current issues is the continuum of education through the PYP, MYP and DP programmes, and some of the key challenges for MYP are indicated briefly in the document "IB MYP Perspectives 2011-2014" that I have uploaded to the Files section. Considerably more detail is given in the "Next Chapter" presentation that was made 10 days ago at the Category 1 Works…

Hi again! I have another question, ok in my school I was invited to the IB meeting in school which the teachers think these kids are able to do it and that day i went home sick and missed it! So I missed on how many courses you should take and stuff like that! Anything you guys know! Also! What courses should I take in IB SL and HL? Those that will be helpful for University. Pre-Ib courses I have selected but what courses should I take for medical if I decide to take Ib in 11 and 12? This is what I have thought of so far! French SL or Hl English Sl or Hl Math SL Biology HL? Chem Sl or Hl? Don;t know! So what i mean is in the subjects what Hl and Sl should I tak…

Hi, I'm a grade 9 student and I'm thinking about going into Pre Ib, I have most courses selected of pre ib but math, last term my math mark was close to an eighty, but unfortunately this term it sort of dropped because of one test. I want to know if I should go in pre ib math and do the whole course, I want to get an Ib diploma but I'm afraid it could be the wrong choice. I want to go into medical, and become a doctor so if i take math studies maybe is that acceptable? And would be ok if a person with a seventies mark go into math pre ib SL? I'm really stressing out about this and the course selection is final next week. Also I have selected courses if i don't take Ib in…

I currently have 5 HL subjects: English HL Maths HL Physics HL Chemistry HL Economics HL and Spanish ab initio. I will probably keep Economics and English at HL. Which HLs out of Maths, Physics and Chemistry should I drop down to Standard? Would it be unrealistic to do 4 HLs? And what would you find to be the hardest and easiest classes?

The MYP curriculum octagon well illustrates the programme's 8 subject groups and 5 areas of interaction, but the images provided on the IBO website are at rather low resolution. So in case anyone requires the graphic for his or her documentation or presentations, I've uploaded a higher resolution version to the Pre-IB/MYP Files section.

Hi, I am currently a Pre-IB student and course registration have been filled in and done with but it's not too late if I change it. I was debating whether to take Business HL or Econ HL, or both, but at last minute I decided that I was going to take HL Econ + HL History instead. I was wondering, if I do decide to pursue Business for a BsC, is IB Business a prerequisite? Or is it fine that I took Econ instead? I'm interested in going to the UK or Australia for University and a major in regards to the Social Sciences: Economics, Business, International Relations, or Political Science. Here are my courses: HL English HL History HL Economics SL Math SL Chemistry SL French Did…

I was thinking recently about IB recently, and I thought - so many people are talking about the easiest possible choice, however, what's the HARDEST? So, please IBS, give me your suggestions (for the sake of it, let's keep the choices limited to 4 HL's & 2 SL's).

Hey there!! I will hopefully start with IB this summer and I'm really happy for that. The problem is that I'm going to school in Costa Rica for 5 months now and I'm afraid of getting lazy about all this school stuff (I don't know whether you can call it school oder not, really). That's why I would like to prepare me somehow for my IB (by the way, my English is getting incredibly bad://). Somebody who started IB after a (lazy)(half) year abroad? Any recommondations? I currently get 6s and 7s for everything in MYP, so how do you think it would work out [would it?] for me to do 4 highers next year and 2 SL? I'm looking to attend an Ivy League college and doing these highers would keep more options available to me. My careers counsellor says I'm allowed to do 4 HL and 2 SL subjects [i dont particularly want to take a 7th] but I don't know if it would still be possible to maintain a 6s and 7s at HL if I have one more that most people. I am going into IB next year and I'm not sure what HLs to take. My school makes you take English and History as HLs, so you only get to pick one, or two max. I know I'm going to do four Higher Level classes, and I know I want one of them to be Biology, but I'm torn on the last one. I have to choose between Psychology and Visual Arts. I love art, but for my career I am planning on doing something with psychology/neurology. What would you guys recommend? Thanks!

I've finally obtained a copy of the latest (August 2008) version of the document "IB MYP: From principles into practice", and uploaded a pdf to the Files section. This is the in-depth practical guide to all aspects of curriculum, assessment, teaching and student learning in the context of the IB MYP. It is the basic document referenced in the individual MYP subject-group guides, and incorporates the earlier publications "Implementation and Development of the Programme (2000)" and "Areas of Interaction (2002)".

Hey guys! Course selection deadlines for my school are very near and I still haven't decided on some of the courses. So the toss up is between either taking Biology at HL or English Lit. at HL. I have already decided what other courses I would like to take already, however, I'm not so sure about these two courses. I was wondering about which is more challenging, how much the workload is for each course and how difficult it is to score well in both courses. Additionally, I would also like to know the difference between SL and HL in these respective courses. I need a reply soon as the form is supposed to be handed in within the next two to three days. Hey, I'm going to IB next year, and I need help picking my HL classes. I want to major in biology or physics in colleges, but I'm torn over which classes to take. I know I'm going to take HL Bio and HL math, but I don't know if I should take HL physics or HL economics. Hi guys, So I am currently a 10th grade student at one of the top schools in the US. And my school gives the option of either Calculus AB or BC, which should I take, because apparently AB is not a prerequisite of BC* IB Art HL *Is this worth it?? Or should I take Forensics Psychology instead?? That would mean…

Hi everyone, so I'm now in my final year of the MYP Programme and I heard that there will be tons of assessments sent for moderation. I recently finished a science research essay that will be sent for moderation and I copied quite a lot of stuff from an online essay. I submitted my work through Turnitin.com and surprisingly, the system detected only 10% of plagiarism. Will IB find out that I copied most of my stuff from an online source? Thanks!

I am currently in 10th grade and I have just chosen my IB classes. HL: -Biology -Chemistry -French SL: -History -English -Math Doubling science was a very last minute decision. I added chemistry in place of psychology (originally it was HL bio, HL psych, HL history, HL french, SL eng, SL math) because I thought that it might be useful if I ever decide to go in a science path. However, I am still very unsure and I actually feel neutral towards science (although I am looking forward to biology). Do you think this was a wise choice? Or is taking 2 HL sciences simply too much? I can always change to: HL: -Chemistry -French -History SL: -Biology -English -Math Unfortunately, I…

I'm planning to have a career in psychology, the human mind, or with disabled people and am unsure what the best options might be. I should mention that I'm average at math, but do not enjoy it. Also, the group 3 subjects provided by my school are Economics, Business Management, Environmental Systems & Societies, History, ITGS, and Geography. Thanks for any responses !

HELLO! i am in the midst of my first year and i'm am doing extremely badly with IB in general. I wonder whether there are any members interested in discussing IB MYP matters? A search of the forums with the term MYP produced zero(!) results. Does this mean that all members are in DP1 or later? Or are the younger students in schools that offer the IB DP, but not the IB MYP?

Hi/Hola/Hello, I am torn between chosing one of the options below for my IB courses: These are the only 2 choices I have left: option 1: HL - English, History, Biology SL - French, Maths, Chemistry option 2: HL - English, Psychology, Chemistry SL - French, Math, History English HL and Spanish SL, Math SL are fixed and not changable. I have to take History either HL or SL. So the choices are whether to take History and Biology HL or Psychology and Chemistry HL. Hey, IB Junior here. I am thinking about which classes to take as my 3 HL classes for the IB program. I was thinking about it the other day, and I'm not quite sure if my subjects are well-rounded enough. I am taking: English Lang&Lit HL Spanish B HL Chemistry HL Psychology SL Biology SL Maths SL The problem is that Psychology might be considered a science (depending on how you look at it), which means half of my subjects are science-based, and my curriculum doesn't have much creativeness in it.
