Hello I need some help...urgently! At the beginning of the year I've been told by my teacher that there is no syllabus, kanji list or vocabulary list for Japanese B so we just used the みんなの日本語 books and some stuff from the Basic Kanji Books in class....I've now been told that there is in fact a kanji list for Japanese B higher by someone online. I found a link to a kanji list on the IB website, but when I tried to download it I got an error message saying that I wasn't signed in as a teacher so I couldn't download the stuff, hurrah! I couldn't find a vocabulary list, but I've started my own...which is nowhere near as useful as an official one though. I found the language …

Hi, I'm doing the Korean B HL course and I have to write a written assignment. I read the syllabus and talked to the IB coordinatorat my school(as my school does not have a korean teacher), and I was told that I had to write something creative. Can this be just an essay with a topic on a particular aspect on the literature? Do I lose marks if the written assignment isn't creative enough? Thanks

Hello all. My school does not offer a textbook specifically made for Chinese IBSL. Does anyone here have recommendations on what textbook I can purchase online to guide me towards the exam? I'm from America, so IB is fairly new here. Also, any advice on the exam? Is it in complete Chinese? I have been learning traditional characters, will I also need to know simplified? Thank you. Help is appreciated!

I have a concern. As I have understood it from the language B syllabus the exam consists of the written part and the oral part. The written part is made up by paper 1, paper 2, and a written assignment. My teacher made us do the written assignment last week and she put us in a room for 3 hours and let us as it with the written assignment. She said we were absolutely not allowed to take it home and work on it. I thought it was a bit strange since I thought the written assignment would have been like that of in English A where you were worked on it on your own time and kept to the word count. I didn't see anything on the syllabus that said there was a certain time limit …

So I've been seeing a lot of people on here with something called Ab initio for their language. I'm starting my second year of the IB in French SL and I was wondering: what's the difference between French SL and French Ab initio? I know 'Ab initio' means 'from the beginning' in Latin...

Hey, so tomorrow is the 3/4th day of our travail ecrit. My format that I have chosen so far is a brochure, but I'm worried about how the brochure will actually look on the official IB exam papers that we have to write our good copies on. So will I just have 3 columns on one page and then 3 columns on the second page, and thats it? And I would have to fill in all the content in each of the columns exactly? It would be amazing if someone could show/tell me an example of how the brochure is supposed to look?

Hi, I came to Australia(Sydney) from Korea in June this year and started the IB about 4months ago. I chose Korean B HL because its the easiest subject to get a 7(in my case). The language itself is easy for me and while I went to middle school and high school in Korea, I studied a lot of literature so I don't have problem with the that. However, I've read the language B syllabus but I'm still not sure what the syllabus wants me to study and how I have to do the internal assessments. Could somebody explain to me what and how I have to study for the exams and what am I supposed to do for the IA. Also, can the literature I choose be a poem? Or, do I have to choose a play or…

Hi, next year I am about to enter DP, scary huh? I came to my school last year with no previous experience in spanish and I am still struggling in it. Because I will have had technically had "2" years of it when I enter dp, would they not let me take Spanish inito? Is this policy or do the schools decide case by case? Also other then the fact I am bad at it, I have no desire to learn it, however I do want my Ib diploma, I was reading and I came across somewhere, where it said I could take classic languages in my dp years. (If somehow I could learn Latin and still get my diploma ) Im not sure if they meant instead or with the normal languages? Can anyone shed some light? …

I was wondering, (I thought I should ask here because my Spanish teacher is going crazy because of Gov school and everything!), is it possible to drop down to ab initio after taking one year of SL? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ab initio easier? The thing is, I got an A- first quarter, and a B this past quarter, and that too with extreme studying just to understand what goes on in class! Advice? Should I drop?

ok guys, this is somehow urgent.... My wriiten assignment English, Language B HL is tomorrow. It is all rather....spontaneous. I shall be creative, and related my text to something I read in class, ok. I chose Brave New World and decided to write a diary enrty from Johnäs perspective. QUESTION: Does john have to live in the time of Huxleys book? Could I write it form a John still living today, comparing the World State to our actual world? Is that permitted or do I have to stay in the time of the book? Thanks a lot for your help Best wishes, Tina

ok so i'm about to do my written task in chinese. I have my sources for the task. However, I used easybib for the citations and the author's names are in pinyin. Keep in mind though that the source is written in chinese. So for instance, Chi-Kuo Shen. Discovering Chinese: Volume 3. Palo Alto, CA: Better Chinese, 2006. Print. My chinese teacher says that I should put the names in characters but it's really hard to find the characters and type them on the computer because I have the sources scanned online. It doesn't say anything bout this in the ib language guide so... I'm asking y'all for opinions here. thanks :*

So I have been a French student since eighth grade and I am bilingual before taking French. I know Mandarin, I am literate in it as in I can read and write in it. But I have not taken the Mandarin course before. So a couple days ago I asked to be assessed by the IB Mandarin teacher and I got accepted into SL Mandarin. My friends and my current French teacher isn't too thrilled about this. Most of my friends are doing French and only two of them are doing Mandarin SL. I have heard from the upper grade people that if I take French SL (as that is my only option), the highest mark I can get is a 5. I really love French but I don't want my diploma grades to suffer. Currently, …

Ok, so I'm taking SL french and I need some serious help. French is fun for me, but I'm not really enjoying the class to be honest. I feel dumb and like I can't improve. My speaking is horrible, but with reading if I take my time, I can comprehend most of it, depending on what I'm reading. I need help mainly with listening, and speaking. And with the writing i'm getting better, or at least I think i'm getting better. A lot of the times in the class I give up because I feel like everyone is so ahead of me, and I have no time to prove myself, and improve. We move through things so fast, and it's frustrating because I know I can do it... I just need a slower pace. What are…

hello fellow survival-ers, below is a German exercise that my teacher asked us to write. it is about the film "merry christmas" by Christian Carion. Hi everyone I have already done a written task about Media/language; and I made a political speech However now I have to write the other written task, which is the literature one. I am slightly confused though, because what are actually some of the options for this task? I mean you are not supposed to make a brochure and stuff like that? I had the idea to do an interview with a character, (David Lurie) from the book Disgrace. In which I ask questions about his view (after the disgrace in the end of the book). Do you think this would be a good idea for the task, and if so.. can I truly just write the questions and answers on my own or should I refer to that specifc vie…

Hey, I'm doing German as my second language this year in IB. I've decided that in order to cover the vocab, I will read some German material every day. By this I mean just 15 minutes a day of reading basic German things like news articles or storybooks, because I know vocab is best learnt in context and other tools like flashcards can be limited in discovering new vocab. Could anyone suggest a good source of simple German reading material? Or more generally (in any language), what forms of written material did you find effective for getting a better grasp of your second language while learning. Often I find news articles a bit too complex, and children's books I have fo…

HELP! I am about to take the May 2012 examinations and am very concerned about my Latin SL class. My school is offering the IB for the first time ever and there has been quite some confusion. As I was checking the prescribed list of authors again, I found a document stating that I had been studying all the wrong option, the ones only eligible from 2013 on. Conducting further research, I found some documents confirming and others faulting my suspicion. This one states that the below list is correct for 2012. http://www.theclassicslibrary.com/prescribed%20authors.pdf These ones, one the other hand, tell me that the mentioned list is wrong for 2012. http://www.google.de/ur…

Hello everyone, Ok, so I'm the only Latin IV in my school (the joke is the class is compiled of the Latin III's and Elizabeth) and my Latin teacher is still getting the hang of being an IB teacher. I'm the first IB Latin IV she's ever had so we're both kinda stumbling along, (she became an IB teacher officially my freshman year I think... and I've had her all 4 years) My main problem is with the IA. I'm not sure if Higher Level is the same as A2. It's the second level of the language. I'm sincerely worried that I won't pass my Spanish oral this year. Last year, I almost failed the oral- and that was the lower level! Plus, the teacher this year speaks so quietly and fast that my class never knows exactly what is going on (not good, right?). SO if I do fail, can I still get the diploma?

I am currently a sophomore and will be taking IB Mandarin SL next year. I actually only started Mandarin (the course was called Mandarin I) last year in my freshman year but since I displayed a higher-level of speaking and writing proficiency at the end of the year in comparison to the other students in my grade, they bumped me up to Mandarin III this year. I currently know how to write about 800 characters give or take, and can recognize about 1000. The book that we studied in Mandarin I and III follows the Yuan Dong publishing corp. from Taiwan. We also take supplementary grammar and vocabularies from the widely used Chinese Made Easy series as well for IB prep. So for …

I am planning on doing a debate between an oxford dictionary expert and an urban dictionary expert. My ideas are: - Having a preliminary-speach so that the expert on both sides have the opportunity to say their pros and cons of their area of expertease. - After that have a space for debate on the speeches highlight what each of them are not in agreement. - Have a celebrity who uses language as their way to make a living (like eminem for example) and have some questions on what he thinks about language and whether we apply slang and other "urban" terms in our daily use. But the debate has to be oriented on "How is language used to create meaning?" so I was thinking on de…
