Hello everybody, I made the silly choice of taking Japanese B SL after achieving an A* in Year 10. I am now in Year 13, however the bane of my IB diploma is Japanese, in which I am struggling to achieve a 6! Now, I don't really expect it but I would like a 7. But my biggest question is if it is possible, and how on earth to achieve it? I'm at my wit's end with Japanese. Not sure if this is any different to other languages, but it is Paper 1 /40; Paper 2 /25; Written Assignment /25; Group Oral /10; Individual Oral /20. This language is really pulling me down. I struggle to achieve 50% on the paper one as we are not taught as much as 25% of the kanji that come up on the pap…

I've always been decent at Spanish, but this year it's been kick my a**. Much of what we have been doing is taking practice Paper 1s, which are almost completely reading comprehension based. Does anyone have any tips or ideas that will help me to do better on these and just Spanish SL in general?

Hi, this is my first post here! I just wanted to ask if complete beginners will be highly disadvantaged taking ab initio subjects. This might appear to be a little bit odd (considering the fact that the subject was designed for beginners) but it is to my knowledge that many ab initio students have prior knowledge of the language (eg. taking them at IGCSE level). With the bell curve system in place, can newbies like me still manage at least a 6 for the subject (assuming a fair bit of hard work, of course)? Thanks for the help!

Hi, I was wondering if the IB SL Mandarin Language B exam allows you to write in both traditional and simplified characters? As in writing some words in traditional and some words in simplified on the same question/paragraph/essay or whatever. Thanks!

I'm currently a sophomore and in the middle of selecting my IB choices for next year. My dilemma lies in group 2. I don't know whether to choose French B or Vietnamese A1 (standard level either way). I'm a Viet, but to be honest my Vietnamese really isn't that great. I can easily write literary commentaries in English, but I struggle to do the same in my mother tongue. This is really a big problem cuz Viet is only available at A1, which focuses heavily on literature analyses and all that. I know Vietnamese A1 has a really high percentage of students getting 7s, but I highly doubt I belong to that category. I've been studying French as a second language for 4-5 years now, …

Hey guys as there is not really a place to ask questions about stuff you don't understand in both languages, I thought it could be discussed here and I could help as a native speaker. I can help with Grammar and sentence structure, however as I am doing German A Lit and French A Lang and Lit, I don't really know how the B curriculum or ab initio curriculum works...

hi, I've got a question. I recently needed motivation for learning french. I don't understand movies (and I don't have to) which was the best way to learn english in my case, I also don't like french music so I started to listen to french versions of disney songs (great method!) And trying to understand some lyrics I came across this: more precisely, the first word. Can anyone tell me what 'dites' means here? I assume it's a form of 'dire' of course but it doesn't suit anything I've learned till now. I'd say it's imperatif but it shouldn't be written that way in this case...

Okay so I'm currently doing IB French B HL and I'm getting straight As (or 7 if you want what it is equivalent to in IB talk) for both my oral and writing, but I seem to have a huge problem in my paper 1 (comprehension) . It's not like I'm failing it but I could do way better (i.e. get a 7). My problem with it is that I always seem to overestimate what they want in the questions and so I give a huge and complex answer that no one would have thought of, and I think that I don't always understand the question and their answers (especially the ones where they tell you to provide a question or title to a particular part of the test). Does anyone have any tips or suggestion…

Hey, I have my mock for Japanese B Papers 1 and 2 tomorrow. As far as I'm aware, the Criteria Breakdown is as follows: A/10 = Language/grammar. B/10 = Message. C/5 = Format/Text Type. I can create a grammar mnemonic that will allow me to jot down a lot of grammar structures before my exam, and thus in theory obtain a lot of marks for my criteria A. However, my fatal flaw with Japanese is the darned kanji. Thing is, I remember them vaguely but they shroud themselves in just enough ambiguity that I am unconfident to write them in the paper!! Therefore only kinda simple kanji or regular kanji get written by me. Don't get me wrong, I do use a decent range, but not much, and e…

Do you draft your paper 2 responses for your language? I have finished my exams for my language already and scored decently well (6). In discussion with someone, I found it surprising that they drafted their paper 2 responses before rewriting them. Don't get me wrong, I didn't just start writing stuff all over the page. I thought it through, made a rough plan, then made a detailed plan (with a few words and sentences), I brainstormed for a while and took my time writing it. But I didn't write it out twice....

Hey guys. right now I'm in the middle of doing research for my Group 2 English EE paper. i was wondering if anyone here knows a link where i can get my hands on some old english ee exemplars. i am quite familiar with what the standard is for first language EE but I'm not sure about how its supposed to be written for second language since i heard that expectations are slightly lower. do i need to focus more on the literary aspects and if so how much depth is expected of it. I just want to get a feel of how it ought to be. if anyone is willing to share his/her past English EE I'd really appreciate it too. Thanks in advance

How hard is Chinese SL? i heard that the syllabus got changed slightly last year and its supposed to be harder now than it was before ;/ i plan on doing it anticipated (in year 11 rather than year 12), but im worried that the essay topic and content may be too dense. I'm studying in melbourne, aus and here we've got VCE as our diploma.. ive done the VCE 3&4 exams and they are alright, is chinese SL much harder than this?

Do you guys know of any material I could use to study some French on my own? I know that French needs interaction but I just want to learn/teach myself some grammar and vocabulary. Thanks. Edit: Okay guys. So maybe I didn't make myself sound too clear... I missed a lot of school and I want to teach myself French. As much as I have tried to consult my French teacher for advice she never returns emails/messages and the only way I would be able to contact her would be in person (which is not possible in my current situation). Hi I am doing Self Taught Korean B (Language B) and I looked at the syllabus and was unsure of the exact internals I will have to go through. Could someone who has experience or knowledge with the aspect please give me a brief outline of the internals I will have to produce for Korean B (or just language B, as I understand all language B's have one syllabus) self taught? My knowledge is limited to knowing that there is an oral component. Thank you.

So the last exam is approaching quickly, which for me is French ab initio. But I sort of avoided studying french all this time because I usually just do okay. But I'm sort of freaking out because I know sometimes I just get really lost on Paper 1. Any suggestions for how to revise for Paper 1 and Paper 2? Since paper 1 tends to have a lot of stuff you haven't seen I know it's harder to prep for, my teacher just suggests going over all the vocab we've ever done on any topic. But I feel like that's such a crazy amount because there's a lot of stuff I sort of got by without really doing in depth and since we don't have a real textbook (just this useless thing which is more …

Hi everybody. I've got a mock of an individual oral coming up - the new kind where you get a photo related to one of your options and, after 15 minutes of prep, you have to talk about it for 3 - 4 minutes and then discuss it with the examiner/teacher for 5 - 6 minutes. I've got the Skills and Practice book which I've yet to read that my teacher recommended, but what I'd really like is some good ol' IB Survival advice! Maybe I'm just totally incompetent, but I couldn't find anything related to the new orals... So, in summary... HELP! -- Ahmed.

Hi, My French B exam is this Tuesday. I was just wondering can someone explain the jist of connecteur logique to me? For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about it, connecteur logique is that part you see on Paper 1 where the word is replaced with a [X] or a number like [1] or [2]. Often, the word bank given to you has words like contre, mais, avant de, jamais, apres que, etc. Is there a way to easily answer this section? Tips, suggestions? Anything is appreciated!

As you all know, French B exams are creeping up (22nd), so I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get a level 7. I know that in order to do well in paper 1, past exams are a must. Another useful tip for paper 1 is to know the linking words and some common vocabulary that comes up over and over on exams (again see past exams) For paper 2, I guess the main thing is knowing the formats. Does anyone have a list of the formats and what they involve? Here are a few: Formal Letter Informal Letter Brochure Tract (flyer) Newspaper article Discours Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want that level 7 but have not been given very much guidance as to how to a…
