How long does it take to become fluent? Are the internal and external exams demanding/hard? Is the language fun to learn? Thanks.

Hey guys, So I was just wondering what the difference is between doing French B HL and French B SL. Is there, say, more content to cover, more things to do, any additional IAs, or are you just marked more harshly in the papers or something? I have no clue about this, so sorry if my questions are stupid! Thanks in advance!

Hey guys! i have my chinese written task in school, and how my teacher has formatted it is just really weird. she give us 3 articles and we have to write a written task on them also we have to write them in school under 4 hours. i'm just really confuse now, could anyone tell me what is expected of a Mandarin B written task or rather how it differs from English A1.2? Because there is no mandarian B textbook on this, i am just lost, all the info we get is just from the teacher and there isnt even guidance on this essay. as for english, we sort of have a course companion, which does help actually in some ways. help would be very much appreciated.

Well! We are preparing ourselves to work on the second written task in our class and its based on literature. But I am having a problem on selecting a topic. Could anyone please suggest me with a topic? The literary works we have read so far are: 1. 1984 by George Orwell 2. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov 3. Some short stories by Edgar Allan Poe Thank-you!

Im doing Arabic SL B and I have my interactive oral coming soon, i was told that i do not need to prepare anything or study anything at all for this IA and that all i need to do is have a normal conversation in "proper" Arabic on an unseen topic. Is that how it really is? I'm not quite sure since this is the schools first year to offer IB and the teachers are quite inexperienced. Thanks alott

How do you remember irregular conjugations?
by Guest Loco Mo Mo- 4 replies
- 1.5k views
Almost every rule has its irregular verbs that don't follow the same pattern. I've managed to learn the main rules for past, present and future tenses. However, I'm struggling to find an effective way to remember all the damn exceptions. For example, for the future tense, verbs like aller, avoir, devoir, envoyer, être..., have irregular stems. How do you remember all such stems and irregulars? Thanks

Hey guys! Right now I am in pre-IB and have gone through French I to III...However I strongly dislike it and I don't want to take French or Spanish (the only classes offered at my school). I recently discovered there might be a possibility to take a different language (for me it would be Japanese). I am not completely sure though. I was going to ask after Spring Break...I would like to know if anyone has ever done something like study at a community college and taken the IB exam? Or do you have to take an actual IB class?

We are starting on our written tasks based on part 2 of the English A course, and I have no ideas for what to write about. I really want to write something more creative, but am not sure if it would fit to any of the topics (propaganda, journalism, advertisement, media etc.). For my FOA I talked about the way culture affects ads, and vice versa. I could maybe build on that. I don't know. Do you have any ideas to share? :-)

As you all know, there has been a change in the language B syllabus which starts first examinations in 2013, In my school, the language B that we study is only examined in the nov session. That means although I started IB in August 2011 (and I am graduating in 2013) I will be doing my language B exams in nov 2012. So do I have to follow the new syllabus or the old one?? Our teacher says that we have to follow the new syllabus because we graduated in 2013, although our language B exams are in nov 2012. I am confused. Does any one have any idea which syllabus we are to follow???

Hey guys! I will put this in the most simplest way possible: my german teacher does not teach us. I keep telling him that I dont feel comfortable/prepared about taking the test in 2 MONTHS, but he keeps telling me that Ill do fine. He says because i got 3rd in the National german examination Ill do fine..:/ Can you guys tell me a way I can put my hands on some old IB german test, or some good online review guides? Something that I could study?I know 2 months is not a lot of time before IB/AP exams, but I will try the best I can along with my other 7 APs and IBs.. Thanks!

Would anyone be able to help me here? Our Spanish teacher left this year (in IB2) without giving us any documents on what we need to learn. The school is scrambling to get something sorted for us, but the only teacher in the school who knows Spanish doesn't know the IB Syllabus and is having difficulty finding it. Would anyone have any advice/ be able to link the syllabus? He was the sort of teacher who we didn't do much with, but trusted his plan in his head... We don't even know what the internals are for Spanish

So, my friend has a problem. She's taking Spanish Ab initio, but the teacher keeps giving her 2s an telling her that a pass is only from 55%. This seems ridiculous to me, and I looked at grade boundaries and they seem to be standard IB grade boundaries (meaning she's averaging a 4/5, not barely a 2). Anyone know something I don't about the boundaries or does the teacher simply seriously dislike her (she predicted her a 2, by the way)?

Individual Oral- do's and don'ts?

Next week I'll have my individual oral in French which I'm pretty nervous about since the fluency of my language isn't ... good lol. I've written a whole script I'll try to memorize till then so I won't have to get stuck on formulations and such when having it. So to my actual question. Any do's and don'ts for the individual oral? Tips of what to do and such?

Hi IBSurvival-ers, I wanted to ask about what is required as part of the mandarin B SL curriculum. For some reason, we're learning things like 古文 and interpreting things quoted by 孔子 we've read 5 pretty difficult works within half a year, such as 《边城》,《雷雨》and 《月牙儿》. This seems ridiculously hard, and I'm starting to wonder if our class had somehow been automatically made harder despite it being a Mandarin B, SL class, which should be easy. I'm currently studying in China, and I've learnt chinese in china for almost 6 years, and can speak and write well enough to cope within a Chinese enviroment, and I'm having major difficulties with keeping up as I can hardly scrape a C- …

I recorded my oral assessment for mandarin B SL recently and while I think my individual portion for the first 4 minutes was ok (I am Chinese but my pronunciation and vocabulary is really awful) my question and answer session with my teacher was horrible. We went back and forth for only about two minutes with me too nervous to do more than very short answers and he finally just ended the assessment at 6 minutes. I'm completely nerve wracked because it's so far from the 10 minute requirement. Is this as bad as I think it is or am I just overreacting?

Next year I really want to take IB mandarin B SL but I'm not sure if I'll be able to because i've heard it's really hard. I don't have a chinese background but I've been studying it for 3 years. We haven't learnt much though because my teachers are quite bad. My other option is spanish ab initio but I'd really like to take mandarin because I really like the language. If I get a tutor and start working on my mandarin now do you think I'll be able to take it next year (school year starts Feb)? How many characters do you need to know? And has anyone with a non-chinese background ever done well at it? I'd love for any IB students to share your experience

I'm pretty fluent in Chinese, I can hold daily conversations with my parents and Chinese teacher, but my writing and reading skills are like a third grader's. This is the first year IB Mandarin B SL is offered at my school, and my Chinese teacher doesn't know what's going on. What am I supposed to do? Please explain the internal assessment, the exam, and any other requirements!

Hi there, I've got my Mandarin B SL exam this year . I think mandarin is my worst subject by far. Can you please help me by answering some Qs about the paper 1 (writing paper)? 1) For the last section of the paper where you have to read a passage and then write a short letter/email/poster etc on it (and you are supposed to include 10 points or something from the passage), how many points do you usually make? I can only get around 6... 2) For that same section, is it okay if we just copy massive chunks from the original text? I can't put it in my own words... mainly because I don't know what it's saying. But I am able to identify pretty well the bits that I need to put …

My teacher is NOT IB certified, so we have no access to any form of a syllabus, past tests, what people usually do well or badly on, ANYTHING!!! Hi, So, as most of you already understand, as a Language A2's IB student we need to create a written task, about particular literary works, which could effectively generate new ideas and convey critical responses in helping the student to explore the materials assigned even further. After deliberate consideration, i've decided to create an online forum or online discussion as my written task. Since i believe, a forum is a perfect place to generate diversities and selection of ideas regarding to my topic, seen from several perspectives or point of views. I used the movie adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and Steven Spielberg's "Amistad (1997), which have strong…

My teacher has told me that writting a pastiche is difficult since you are asked to imitate the writing style of the original writer. I have decided to create a short story instead, with a clear relevence with a poem studied in class. So, I as wondering if you knew what the average score is for short stories? I'm not imitating anyone... but to know how "harshly" they grade a short story based on previous grades, that would really help me feel confident with what I'm doing Thanks.

Hey guys, my second written task is due soon and I have just been told yesterday that it has to be from a different "area of communication". First I thought about writing a speech, but that did not work out. I was thinking about writing something about Child Soldiers, either an Opinion Column/Editorial (What exactly is the difference?) by a reporter who maybe traveled there, or a Manifesto by a group that uses children as soldiers. My problem is, that I don´t know how to write these kind of things, as up until now, I have only been writing things like poetry or "really" creative stuff. Can anyone help me by giving me an idea how these things have to be structured? And …

Hey guys, I'm doing my French oral on the law that France recently tried to pass that would make the denial of the Armenian genocide illegal. This has had repercussions, with both Turkey and Armenia, as they've now pulled it back for a bit. So I have a few points, but those mainly have to be minor, as most of the presentation is going to be based on what opinions I give her. My 'problematique' is "Est-ce que les gens devraient avoir le droit de croire ce qu'ils veulent?" Practically just means "do people have the right to believe anything they want?", even if it borders on hate crimes and/or incredulous ideas (Pro-WBC, Holocaust denials) or is France correct in making thi…

I got my Frech Oral presentation in early March, but I haven't really decided on a topic yet, let alone practice speaking about it. If I were to speak about a French Film, what is it that I'm supposed to talk about and what questions will probably be asked? And is there any specific kind of film that is recommended for a French Oral presentation? (I'm thinking about talking about Paris 36 or Lucky Luke, the 2009 film). Les Choristes have been done too many times, I think. Thanks for the help in advance

Hello, Did anyone do the topic "popular novels" in the English A2 "culture and media" option? It's in the guide, but our teacher is very reluctant to do it with us, because apparently there is very little material available. But I would really like to write the written task on this topic. Do you think that would be possible? Has anyone done that? I would be very grateful for any information about discussing this topic in class/ materials that can be used as a base for some discussion. I am writing my English A2 HL Written Tasks now. One of them will be Professional communication / Police statement - Global issues / immigration, prejudice discrimination. Do you think the form of a police statement can show the understanding of the option? How? The second thing is, do you know what may be the formal requirements for a police statement? Is it written by a police officer or by a witness/person involved? We never actually analyzed one.

Hi, so I have a question (obviously ) I'm going to go to IB next next year, and I need 3 higher level subjects, I already know I want to take german higher and art higher, however, I need a third one, but none of all my other subjects allow me to pick it higher. See, my father is german, so I obviously speak german fluently (that's because I've been to a german school) and my mom is italian, but I cannot speak fluently, so the question is: Are you allowed to take a language B higher that is SELF TAUGHT (my school doesn't offer italian) ? Do you need a tutor (is it compulsory)? Does the school pay this tutor (it's an international-IB school) And finally, do you think i…
