Ya hi. This is really effing late. My laptop is having issues so I had to get it fixed. Please don't hate me forever. Anywho I'll just explain to yall the format of the paper then give you some of the normal question formats that will be on the test. Mkay.Ready? Let's go! The Format Yall Ok so the paper 1 is divided into 4 different texts: A, B, C, and D. Each of these texts have their own set of questions and prompts. This paper tests two things: Your ability to respond to text based question and a written response to a text. The texts will be all in the language that you have taken and will be chosen externally. You have no say whatsoever in what they pick. Sorry. Altho…

Just out of interest, I wanted to ask people how many options their school offers their students in terms of Language B's. The most common Language B's being studied on this forum seem to be French, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, German and and Italian. Is anyone out there studying a very random language, or one that is not commonly spoken worldwide? If you are, why did you choose it instead of a more commonly used language? My own school offers French, Hebrew and Arabic as Language B (and a few students have taken Spanish, Italian and Finnish as a 7th subject).

Here are some tips that I think will help with formatting paper 2's for language B. Sorry it's not very well edited. Paper 2 Tips Overarching tips: -Register: Who are you talking to? Should you use “tu” or “vous”? Are you being subjective or objective? -Linguistic elements: Always remember to include a variety of tenses and colloquial language. However, when considering tenses always make sure to stay consistent and match the tense that the prompt requires. -Structure: For structuring, always make sure your paragraphs are cohesive and transitions are solid. As Lower would say “Give their eyes a break”. -Principal ideas: This is very important. So important it needs to…

Greetings humans. The following are some tips I've compiled in order to make your oral a less painful and rather care free process in which you talk with the examiner (which may or may not be your teacher) about a topic that you have chosen (or not). So here we go with the tips... The Format Alright. The oral for language B consists of 9-12 minutes of you purely talking in your chosen foreign language. Whether it be French, Spanish, German, MAndarin, etc. the list goes on and on, the format will mostly be the same. (Unless I'm delusional in which case it isn't). It is also divided into three 3-4 minute chunks. These 'chunks' if you will each have a different component to …

Hi, I am in grade 12 IBDP. I scored grade 3 in French Ab inito in my final grade 11 exams. I didn't expect that because I worked really hard. I haven't touched hindi since 4 years. I am able to read hindi but I don't know if I can write good essays to score high grades. I want to shift to hindi sl because my friends who are bad at language find it so easy. Plus I want to take medicine after 12th, for that I need a high total score. Should I take Hindi SL or continue learning french ab initio? My french tutor is not at all good , I am not comfortable with her teaching styles. PLLLEASSEE HELPPP!!

Hello, I am taking Chinese AB initio right now, and I’ve realized that the amount of work needed for Chinese is way too much for me, I want to switch to Spanish A or B since I am fluent in Spanish, is it possible to switch at the end of DP1 since I already failed my end of year exams for Chinese, even my teacher has suggested that I switch classes so it seems like it’s necessary

Hello, I have my Spanish SL language B oral coming up soon, and I really would like to practice it like if I were in the real exam. Does anyone have any past IB Spanish photos that I can practice on in regard to the 5 main occurring themes, or any photos that may be used to practice on?

Hi, I'm a current IB French SL student in Grade 11 and I have been scoring at the lower end of 6 out of 7. I'm looking for ways to push this 6 into a 7 by following a 30 minutes daily French routine. My main weaknesses are listening and speaking. I was wondering if any of you have advice on what I can and should include in this daily routine to boost my score. Thanks in advance.

so uh my spanish teacher's really really crappy. I only had a semester's worth of spanish and right now I'm finishing up my second semester, she's a native speaker and pretty much expects us to talk, read and write the same way that natives do, completely ignoring the fact that most of us only took a semester's worth of spanish before taking this class. Thing is I had online school last semester, so teaching was p limited and class time was cut. Anyway she's going to be my IB spanish teacher next year, knowing her she'll probs try to teach it as HL, so I wanna get somewhat ahead and prepare for her class. Can someone give me any tips and advice on how I can prepare?

Hello, My Japanese teacher does not teach and I would like to study on my own for the IB exam that I will have on this language in 4 months. I cannot find resources anywhere; does anyone have access to the kanji lists, any kind of recommended vocab list, and any practice / past exams that they would be willing to send me? Thanks

I previously posted about this but I really hated Spanish ab and my teacher wasn't good. I was considering switching to English B but that also required switching from English A to Hebrew A (Hebrew is my first language and English is my second). After talking to many teachers about it I ended up going for it, it went really well too and I had a good time. Until my IB coordinator (and English A teacher) told me today that they decided I can't keep doing it due to my English being too good (we had an assessment at the start of the year and apparently I scored among the highest across the entire school). Now I'm kinda stuck though, not only did I miss about 7 or so classes i…

My English B HL IO is next week, so I was trying to prepare for the third part of the oral (questions about the theme), however I struggled with brainstorming questions for the social organizations theme, so I was wondering what are some possible questions that I might be asked about the theme of social organizations, and thank you so much

I am deciding between French SL, Japanese Ab Initio or Italian Ab Initio for the ib. FRENCH SL? I have been doing French for around 4 years at school and have been doing pretty well, except this past year (with online lessons) I have fallen behind (especially in listening and speaking) compared to some of my classmates (the ones who are continuing french in ib) so I feel a little uncertain on continuing, but I do not really want to just 'drop' everything I learned, so I might do extra french for fun (I'm not sure if I will have time to do this though). JAPANESE AB INITIO? I have barely started Japanese, but I am interested in the languag…

I've started my first year of IB in September and for the most part everything's been going great, my current courses are: English A HL, Spanish ab SL, Anthropology HL, Computer Science HL, Math AI SL and Visual Arts HL. I'm pretty satisfied with most of them besides Spanish, I enjoy most of my classes to some extent but Spanish is starting to get more and more insufferable to attend. I really like language acquisition and it's a topic I'm passionate about but because of the methods they use to teach it here it's just becoming more annoying and I feel like I'm not learning anything. I would normally just switch to a different course (I did that from Biology to Computer Sc…

So according to some, having language pen-pals can count for creativity hours. How? Basically, what you have to do is find someone who is doing IB somewhere else (outside of your country of residence), and talk to them in a language that you are not fluent in. In this case, us IB students can use our language B to fit that criteria. The only requirement is that you conduct your email entirely in that foreign language, and that person will reply to you in their foreign language (one in which you can understand of course). The emails should be set about once or twice a week for about 15 minutes, depending on how free you are. However, you'll notice that if this is continue…

Title says it all. If I learn the ab initio language I'm studying to a point beyond what is taught at the IB through self-study, can I apply this learned knowledge to the written assessment (e.g. using more complicated grammar structures, words not in the course, etc.)? Specifically for the externally assessed final IB examinations.

We have TOK formative once every two week and these formatives have direct correlation with our predicted grades. This week, there are both midterm exams and the TOK essay deadline. TOK deadline on Thursday, Exam ends on Friday. The exams also impact our predicted grade for IB. We have argued many times and we asked for an extension (two day extension) so that we can focus on the exam first, however, they disagreed and said they gave us class time. The "class time" they gave to my class was 45min only, and when we have exams we don't have the normal class schedule, which means that there are no TOK class during the week of exams. Can you finish an essay in …

Despite having over a year's experience with the language by this September, I'm taking Mandarin ab initio through Pamoja next year. To those who have finished it - what HSK or CEFR level would you say it got you to? I can already pass HSK 3 and would like to know if the course could bring me any further. While it's already set in stone and I know it will be good to strengthen my foundations, it's still a question of interest.

Hi all, I have two main questions. The first is 1) if we happen to want to redo the oral, will we have the opportunity to do that? My teacher has never answered this question explicitly. The second is about idiomatic expressions. I am in Spanish B SL, and while I did notice that idiomatic expressions are listed under the mark band for the highest number of points on the rubric, my teacher didn't stress idiomatic expressions in class AT ALL. I'm not sure what experience people have here with learning idiomatic expressions, but I'm not a native speaker and we didn't cover this topic in class. I was planning to throw in one or two I learned online throughout the pr…

Hii, I need to choose a topic for my EE. I was thinking about doing English B category 2 (culture and society) but I'm not quite sure on what specific to do. I brainstormed some ideas: doing a research focusing on Disney movies or cartoons and the impact they have on kids' views and values analyze the problems in a specific kid movie something related to traveling and moving around (and therefore the effect on the person) something about societies and the impact on individuals' identity Could someone give me some tips?? I'm struggling a lot on finding a specific research topic 😕 (In case it might help, I'm very interested in sociology …

Hei fellas, After a long hiatus doing other stuff, I'm trying to do self-taught German to go to University in Luxembourg, and I would like to use the IB methods even though I won't take the examinations (I did the IB long ago). I bought this second hand book online Deutsch im Einsatz, but I realised that it does not include any CD or link to the audio files, which are supposed to be played or shared by the teacher in an "elevated version". I was wondering if any of you happens to have these files or knows where I could get them for free? Best,

Hey! So according to the ammendments for M21 exams, it says that Internal assessment—amended; teachers may share two extracts from the same literary text with students. Can we ask the teacher to show us 2 extracts from one of the texts? Or is it something that the teacher decides upon? Thanks!

I got 2 marks away from a 7 in French SL B-- the lower grade boundary for a 7 is an 83. Does anyone have any experience with remarking of SL French? I don't see hope in the Paper 2 Reading Comp. because it's primarily objective, but I have more optimism for additional points in the Paper 1 written task and oral for their subjectivity. Can anyone say if it's worth requesting a remark?

My current topic is To what extent does the social class we are born into affect us and our future? on The Outsiders. I was thinking it was good for the literature category, but my teacher first said it was okay, then said it was not okay, and she said that the book is not literature. I realized that she doesn't really know how to help me even and I started searching up online, but got even more confused. Is this topic good? Or should I change it?

I'm a May 2010 candidate taking Spanish Ab Initio. I'm the only one at my school who takes this subject, and I basically I have to follow the syllabus on my own, since my teacher is not familiar with the IB-program. Consequently, I don't know if I should work harder or less. What have you done for Spanish Ab Initio so far? I have, in broad strokes, taught myself the regular verbs in every tense: present, perfect, imperfect, conditional, etc. Now I can just pump my head full of regular verbs and I'll know them in each tense. ^^ Soon I will start with common irregular verbs in each tense. Meanwhile, I learn new words and try to read, etc

Hi fellow procrastinators! I'm currently a junior and I am having second thoughts on taking HL French. Right now, I'm losing confidence in doing well because I've been seeing some discussions that say a number of people around the world that take HL French are somewhat fluent. As someone that is quite "average" at French, I'm curious on how difficult it is exactly to pass HL French. So far my skill level has been hard to evaluate because my teacher focuses on the immersion experience, so more talking, and less grammar and vocab. The farthest that i have gotten in grammar was "Passé composé" from 9th grade. To give you a better sense of my experience in cl…

Hiya everyone! New around here. My family is moving abroad (my parent's home country) and I'll be taking the IB from September. My parents speak the language; I don't apart from a few phrases, greetings, etc. However, I'm a little worried as I have chosen to do HL Language B for this language. During lockdown, I have been going through the Duolingo course for the language, have an online tutor for three times a week from next week and we'll be moving to the country about 2 months before I start - will this be enough to get me up to scratch so that I'm able to take HL Language B - what kind of fluency is expected when you start? It's worth pointing out …

Hello, there! This is my first post here ever. So, I'm going to hand in the subjects option form two days later. But I have trouble making choices on English. Do both English A HL and SL focus on literature itself, whereas B focuses on the application of the language and cultures? Thanks!

I've taken spanish since 7th grade (and I am in 11th grade now doing the IB Diploma program). I have always had amazing teachers, and I try to practice outside of class with my friends but I am no where near fluent. My grades are good, but I fear that I am not prepared for the test. I have looked into travelling to Spain for a couple weeks to immerse myself in the language... but I have not found a good program.

This is the first time to use a forum, so if I am posting at a wrong category, tell me. I got A for my IGCSE english language last year. (still cannot believe- I was expecting B for it) I chose English A SL for my IB, but I thought English B HL would be a better choice for me... so I visited the IB coordinator, but every time she rejected because of my IGCSE score. She told me that there is a policy in IB that a student that got a high score (over B? over A?) cannot change to English B even though it is HL; but all the other teachers said that there is no such policy like that. Also, I heard that other student in the school that scored well for their IGCSE eng c…
