Ya hi. This is really effing late. My laptop is having issues so I had to get it fixed. Please don't hate me forever. Anywho I'll just explain to yall the format of the paper then give you some of the normal question formats that will be on the test. Mkay.Ready? Let's go! The Format Yall Ok so the paper 1 is divided into 4 different texts: A, B, C, and D. Each of these texts have their own set of questions and prompts. This paper tests two things: Your ability to respond to text based question and a written response to a text. The texts will be all in the language that you have taken and will be chosen externally. You have no say whatsoever in what they pick. Sorry. Altho…

Just out of interest, I wanted to ask people how many options their school offers their students in terms of Language B's. The most common Language B's being studied on this forum seem to be French, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, German and and Italian. Is anyone out there studying a very random language, or one that is not commonly spoken worldwide? If you are, why did you choose it instead of a more commonly used language? My own school offers French, Hebrew and Arabic as Language B (and a few students have taken Spanish, Italian and Finnish as a 7th subject).

Here are some tips that I think will help with formatting paper 2's for language B. Sorry it's not very well edited. Paper 2 Tips Overarching tips: -Register: Who are you talking to? Should you use “tu” or “vous”? Are you being subjective or objective? -Linguistic elements: Always remember to include a variety of tenses and colloquial language. However, when considering tenses always make sure to stay consistent and match the tense that the prompt requires. -Structure: For structuring, always make sure your paragraphs are cohesive and transitions are solid. As Lower would say “Give their eyes a break”. -Principal ideas: This is very important. So important it needs to…

Greetings humans. The following are some tips I've compiled in order to make your oral a less painful and rather care free process in which you talk with the examiner (which may or may not be your teacher) about a topic that you have chosen (or not). So here we go with the tips... The Format Alright. The oral for language B consists of 9-12 minutes of you purely talking in your chosen foreign language. Whether it be French, Spanish, German, MAndarin, etc. the list goes on and on, the format will mostly be the same. (Unless I'm delusional in which case it isn't). It is also divided into three 3-4 minute chunks. These 'chunks' if you will each have a different component to …

So I’m a desperate student from Hong Kong, currently in my secondary 3 (equivalent to grade 10 in the uk). I have been struggling between the local curriculum and ib lately, as I will have to make my decision within a few months and I am quite concerned about the ib curriculum. Here comes the problem. I aspire to be a doctor in the future, and as local med schools all require a 43-45 for an offer, so I’m also considering uk colleges, like ucl, Cambridge and Oxford, as a back-up plan. I’m a confident Chinese speaker, but not that of English. It’s certain that I would not take the Chinese A+English A diploma, so I am thinking of Chinese A+English B HL (and I’ll be…

Hey! So according to the ammendments for M21 exams, it says that Internal assessment—amended; teachers may share two extracts from the same literary text with students. Can we ask the teacher to show us 2 extracts from one of the texts? Or is it something that the teacher decides upon? Thanks!

I got 2 marks away from a 7 in French SL B-- the lower grade boundary for a 7 is an 83. Does anyone have any experience with remarking of SL French? I don't see hope in the Paper 2 Reading Comp. because it's primarily objective, but I have more optimism for additional points in the Paper 1 written task and oral for their subjectivity. Can anyone say if it's worth requesting a remark?

My current topic is To what extent does the social class we are born into affect us and our future? on The Outsiders. I was thinking it was good for the literature category, but my teacher first said it was okay, then said it was not okay, and she said that the book is not literature. I realized that she doesn't really know how to help me even and I started searching up online, but got even more confused. Is this topic good? Or should I change it?

I'm a May 2010 candidate taking Spanish Ab Initio. I'm the only one at my school who takes this subject, and I basically I have to follow the syllabus on my own, since my teacher is not familiar with the IB-program. Consequently, I don't know if I should work harder or less. What have you done for Spanish Ab Initio so far? I have, in broad strokes, taught myself the regular verbs in every tense: present, perfect, imperfect, conditional, etc. Now I can just pump my head full of regular verbs and I'll know them in each tense. ^^ Soon I will start with common irregular verbs in each tense. Meanwhile, I learn new words and try to read, etc

Hi fellow procrastinators! I'm currently a junior and I am having second thoughts on taking HL French. Right now, I'm losing confidence in doing well because I've been seeing some discussions that say a number of people around the world that take HL French are somewhat fluent. As someone that is quite "average" at French, I'm curious on how difficult it is exactly to pass HL French. So far my skill level has been hard to evaluate because my teacher focuses on the immersion experience, so more talking, and less grammar and vocab. The farthest that i have gotten in grammar was "Passé composé" from 9th grade. To give you a better sense of my experience in cl…

Hiya everyone! New around here. My family is moving abroad (my parent's home country) and I'll be taking the IB from September. My parents speak the language; I don't apart from a few phrases, greetings, etc. However, I'm a little worried as I have chosen to do HL Language B for this language. During lockdown, I have been going through the Duolingo course for the language, have an online tutor for three times a week from next week and we'll be moving to the country about 2 months before I start - will this be enough to get me up to scratch so that I'm able to take HL Language B - what kind of fluency is expected when you start? It's worth pointing out …

Hello, there! This is my first post here ever. So, I'm going to hand in the subjects option form two days later. But I have trouble making choices on English. I want to know the differences between English A SL and English B HL apart from the difficulties and quantity of assignments. Do both English A HL and SL focus on literature itself, whereas B focuses on the application of the language and cultures? Thanks!

I've taken spanish since 7th grade (and I am in 11th grade now doing the IB Diploma program). I have always had amazing teachers, and I try to practice outside of class with my friends but I am no where near fluent. My grades are good, but I fear that I am not prepared for the test. I have looked into travelling to Spain for a couple weeks to immerse myself in the language... but I have not found a good program.

This is the first time to use a forum, so if I am posting at a wrong category, tell me. I got A for my IGCSE english language last year. (still cannot believe- I was expecting B for it) I chose English A SL for my IB, but I thought English B HL would be a better choice for me... so I visited the IB coordinator, but every time she rejected because of my IGCSE score. She told me that there is a policy in IB that a student that got a high score (over B? over A?) cannot change to English B even though it is HL; but all the other teachers said that there is no such policy like that. Also, I heard that other student in the school that scored well for their IGCSE eng c…

Hello, I am starting my IB program this year and I was wondering, in order to take Language B (either SL or HL) do I have to know this language beforehand? I will be attending school in Sweden, however, I am not from there nor have I spent more than a month there. I am planning on taking Spanish HL (I have been studying Spanish for four years) and I really want to learn Swedish. So is it possible to learn a language without having an experience in target language? Thanks in advance!💘

I just came out of the examination room for my Individual Oral Assessment in Mandarin B SL and I don't feel confident that I'll even get a level 4 for it. I was very under prepared and included a lot of filler words like "um" and couldn't answer the discussion questions well. Even though it's only 20% of the overall grade itself, I'm quite concerned that it may pull me down if if I actually were to score a really bad grade. Mandarin is one of my weakest subjects, and I'm paranoid that it would pull my total IB grade down as well. I don't know what to do

Hi all, I'm taking German B SL because my school requires German as language B. My grammar is fine, but I find myself struggling due to lack of vocabulary. My teacher expects my understanding to be much better than it is, which is not helping much, and my textbook (Cambridge, second edition) does not have any vocabulary pages. Anyone here knows where I could find a good vocabulary list that is appropriate for SL? Thanks!!

Hi guys! I'm a Grade 10, and I'll be going to the DP next year. I'm currently taking Language A Mandarin and Language B Spanish, but even though I am Taiwanese, I have never studied in Taiwan, therefore, my mandarin level is lower than the other 2 Chinese students in my class. My parents want me to keep taking Mandarin A but I'm afraid that if I keep taking it in DP, my score will be really low and I can't convince them to let me drop it.. So do you guys have any advice? :(

Hey! I've just started IBY1 and until the end of September, I can make changes to my subjects. So I'm wondering if I should take English B HL instead of English A HL (which I'm taking now). I've always been quite good at English however it's not my native language and that's why I'm afraid if I can handle English A HL. I'm most stressed about the interpretations and analyses of the texts during the final exams. I'm quite good at writing but I'm not sure about analyzing. I'm also already taking 3 other HL subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Geography) and I want to make it easier for me and have the best results possible and since I'm not planning on studying a…

Hi guys, I will be starting the IB in a month and give my exams in 2021. I was confused whether to take French SL or Spanish abinitio. I have previously taken french for my igcse. The HL subjects i had planned were Math AA, Physics and Chem and my SL's as Spanish abinitio, eco and lit lang. Could someone help out with differences of taking each subject and the difficulty levels. My school unfortunately doesn’t allow me to take french abinitio. I would prefer the subject in which it is easier to score. Thank You.

Hi, Next year, I will be going into my IB years. I am not good at french and I was wondering what I can do to prepare for IB French B SL. This year, I was quite confused with a lot of the lessons and assessments so I wanted to know the steps I can take to be on the right track for next year. I am in Ontario, Canada (might be easier to answer my question with a bit of context). Appreciate all the help, Neil

My Chinese teacher has permitted me to study a year of Chinese over the summer, and this will put me into IB Chinese B SL. The course progression of foreign languages goes like this: freshman year -- Chinese 100, sophomore year -- Chinese 200, junior year -- IB Chinese B SL (300), and senior year -- IB Chinese B SL (400), and then we take the IB Chinese B SL test in our senior year. Since I will be studying over the summer, I will be taking IB Chinese B SL a year earlier and have the chance to study IB Chinese B HL (500) if I find myself truly loving the subject and language. I learn languages fast, but I have never done it in two months before. However, I am not a n…

I know I will lose marks in the format criterion but since my format was so incorrect can they even cut marks under Language and Content which are the other two criteria even though they were completely upto the mark?

I was told to go through past papers and find vocabulary that I do not know. However, just going through one paper nearly took a whole day. I feel this is inefficient. So, how do you get a 7 in your Language B papers? Is it simply a matter of memorising vocabulary to do with the Core Topics and an option and then knowing some advanced grammatical constructions? Should we know some more general verbs and adjectives ? Any tips on getting a 7 for Language B will be greatly appreciated. I am asking for SL German B.

I live in Canada and I’ve been in late french immersion for four years now, and the majority of my classes like science, history, etc. were taught in French. I’m going into the IB next year I wanted to know how difficult it would be for me to get like a 5, 6, 7. In my regular French classes I’ve always gotten around 95% but my province doesn’t have a very difficult grading system.

Now, I only have the paper 1 and paper 2 left. Is it still technically possible for me to get a level 5 overall. P.S. Its a life and death situation.

Therefore, I just wanted to ask you guys how I should start studying French (e.g. do you recommend me to learn through language-learning platforms, through textbooks, videos, etc and if so, if you can, name specific resources). The IB Language B guide book states that for the SL External Written assessment there includes a "100-word rationale" and 300-400 word text. It also states that if you go over or under the word limit 1 mark will be deducted from criterion A and the assignment will be graded using the first "400 words and rationale". There is no word range written for the rationale besides just 100 words. Does this mean that the rationale has to be under, over, or exactly 100 words? Thanks!

I understand that with words of quantity like 'beaucoup de', the 'de' stays the same. But I'm confused as to when I should write just 'de' or 'du/de la/de l'/des', if I have a phrase like "[noun] de/du/de la/de l'/des [noun]". For example: Le chat des enfants. Le chat de l' enfant. versus Mon mode de vie. Une épidémie d' obésité.
