Heyy there! My experience in the IB so far's been quite a troubled one: I am still deciding on my subjects - yes, I don't even know how my schools is allowing this... After having studied French B along with Spanish Ab Initio for a while, I have decided to switch to my mother tongue in Group 1, therefore giving up English A SL in favour of Italian A self-taught SL. This implies a major revision to all of my other subjects, as the IB requires each and every student to study English at a certain level, be it A or B. Having chosen to go for Italian A, I must take English B (Higher Level, in the name of fairness). Since I must drop out of one of my language courses, I have …

Hi Everyone! Okay so I have a major Issue I wanted some help with. For the past two years I haven't really put much effort into french ab. initio. The reasons don't matter anymore (though if you must know, four HLs). I somehow, with the help of a dictionary, did my WA and crawled through the IOP relatively well as well (just had problems in the last "General Questions" which I think should not affect the final marks too much ). Now, I need to get a 7 in practically all my subjects because I don't want to take any chances with the EE/TOK marks and need a 41 for my dream school. This brings me to my problem. I need to know enough french to get a 7. I am aware that its mai…

HELP!!!! So I'm studying the Inferno of DANTE for my part 2 oral assessment and I'm trying to answer to the 5 questions. My problem is choosing the 40 lines as with DANTE it would be more natural to analyse and discuss the whole "canto" which is around 130 lines.....do you think it is accepted? or do I have to break the poem up and choose only one third of it? Thank you, it's a bit URGENT!!!!

Hey guys! I've got my French oral coming up in two weeks -- I know, fail on my part preparing well, but I've had a concussion for a month and a half so.. -- and I still don't have a topic. My teacher wants us to find something that relates back to French culture, and something that has two sides to it so we can take an opinion and take a persuasion angle in the exam. I have no. Idea. What. To. Do. If worse comes to worse, I could do France obesity rates and the role of the traditional French diet in why their rates are so much lower than the US, but it's not something that seriously interests me. I'd love to do something with sports (soccer, ice hockey, basketball?), or s…

Is anyone out there taking Latin? I am currently taking it at SL, and I am struggling with it. I really love the language and I do all right in class, but can't seem to do well at translating my homework, completely alone. I'm doing Horace and Catullus as my poetry, Cicero as my prose and Pliny's letters. I am just wondering if anyone has some tips for the translations, or if anyone is in the same boat as me.

Hey guys, I've done one year of French at home with a tutor. My grammar is decent, though I'm only breaching an intermediate skill level at the moment, vocabulary pretty basic, though I'm good at memorising new words... etc. I'll be taking formal French classes at my country's Alliance Française soon as well. I'm quite self-motivated to learn, following several guidebooks, French learning communities on the Internet, Duolingo and all that jazz at the moment. All this accounted for, would I be able to study French at a second language level at an IBDP school? I'm not great at conversational French at the moment, but I have 6 months till I begin the programme. I have plenty…

I've been doing french for the past 5 years and am currently doing the IGCSE course. I am currently working at A/A* grade with little effort (as in i do my homework and ONLY do past papers the night before for exam revision). If i change my study habits for french and put the effort in do you think i'd be possible to do well in sl french (preferably a 6)? Or would it be too difficult? You should also take into consideration that the IB coordinator said that student's from our school who do the IGCSE course struggle in french (the IB school i'm moving to also does IGCSE). Or Would it be easier to get a 6 in Spanish Ab initio?

Hi guys. I'm looking for a Spanish buddy so I can practice talking/writing in Spanish before my exam in May. I'm in the HL class but I'm taking the SL exam. I'm not that good at Spanish but I really want to do well on the exam and not let it be a disaster. So, is anyone willing to be spanish buddies? I prefer to communicate through Gchat for email, whichever works best. Thanks!

Right now I am taking English B and Self Taught Chinese. However, it seems like many universities require English A. I was in English SL initially, and my English teacher said I would likely to get a 4 or 5 (I got 86% as converted mark on my fall term report card), but it always takes me triple time working on an essay to get the same mark as my Canadian friends. In English B, my teacher said I would probably get a 7. However, I have just heard about how difficult Self Taught Chinese would be even for me who finished grade 9 in China. What should I do? Stay in English B and count on my Chinese? Or switch back to English SL?

I recently received my mock exam back and have gotten a 2. Although I feel that I shouldn't be doing B in the first place as many of my peers with the same amount of language experience as I in other schools have been put into abinitio, I can't help but fear afraid for the actual exams. Mandarin is quite a hard language to master, and even with intense work from now on its a bit too late as the exams are approaching. Thoughts?

So I have just started IB and I am aiming for a 6 or 7 in French but I am not sure how to reach that goal. I am so far learning 25 new words/phrases a week along with the present, perfect, imperfect, future and condition tense of four verbs. (This is self appointed) Should I be doing more study for French? Should I be focasing on verbs rather than vocab or vocab rather then verbs? And also should I be doing any practice essays on the topics I am learning and if so how often. Any tips or advice would be amazing! Thank you.

I am currently in year 11 studying Mandarin B at standard level and have to make my choices for diploma next year. I have the choice to continue with Mandarin or to do self-taught German A. I can't decide whether I should stick to Mandarin since i've been learning it for already 4 years or if I should do German self-taught which is my mothertongue language. I'd definitely get better marks at German A compared to Mandarin which i'm alright/not so good at but do you think it would be a shame to give up on Mandarin after so many years? or is it more important to get high marks?

I currently have English Literature HL as my Language A1, and my first language as B language HL. I was just wondering if there is an amount of prescribed or required hours for the course. Being fluent in the language, the acquired language course is rather pointless for me right now, and I was wondering if I could do it with less lessons than the 4/week I have now. Thanks!

Hello, I'll be starting with my diploma course next week, and I'm changing board from CBSE. I've been studying french for the past 5 years, but what I've realised is that it is not up to the mark. We never focussed on the pronunciation and writing skills. And my vocabulary is also not very good. My school offers French B only at SL. Is it advisable for me to take up French B as I've studied the language before, or should I start all over again with French ab initio? please help! Thanks..

Hi, my question is if you'd think I'd face a disadvantage if I based my written assignment (in English B) on a short-story compared to a novel, play. I mean as long as I produce 500-600 words on the essay and a 150 words rationale it shouldn't be considered an easy escape? What do you think? Regards Shwareb

Hi guys, (this is going to be a long, lengthy post so turn back now if you don't want to be overwhelmed) So I'm a year 11 IGCSE student right now, but that's going to change after my exams in May/June this year... We are making our IB options right now, and I'm stuck with group 2 (and having a major dilemma). If I am studying in Hong Kong (see below), will Chinese B suffice? I'm Chinese so I'm worried about racial prejudice... We had this kind of Q&A session with the current year 12's last week, and apparently only two people in their year group are doing Chinese A...in fact the majority of the first language students in my year group are thinking of dropping to Chine…

So every year since Spanish 3 (I'm in Spanish 5 now) our spanish midterm is to read the 4 spanish texts (A,B,C,D) and answer the questions that follow them. They are usually old IB SL spanish tests and I ALWAYS fail them. I don't think I've ever gotten above a D. I just don't understand how to study for this test! I can't study grammar because it's not even going to be tested, and I can't study vocab because I don't know what vocab to study. How do you study for tests like these?

Hi guys, I was looking for anyone who may want to buddy up for Spanish. I have seen another thread for this, but it was from last December and seems like it had ended as a conversation, plus I think everyone already got a person as a buddy. But I was looking for a buddy where we could informally chat (I say informally but we could always use a mixture of informal and formal tenses), when I said informal I meant not scheduling a time e.g. for Skype, I wouldn't mind conversing via Skype or Facebook but I wouldn't like to have scheduled times just in case i'm not able to fulfil a time last minute. But if we were on Skype at the same time we could always have speaking practic…

I've been experiencing some problems with my school... Basically, they're forcing me into taking two Ab Initio languages (French and Spanish) since me and another classmate of mine were the only ones who showed interest in taking French B. I find it stupid that I am only allowed to take French Ab Initio, because I've studied it for three years and, according to the IB Language guide, that's a sufficient background for B courses. At the end of the day, I'd be easier for me to score higher in my exams, but wouldn't universities think that my subject choice was dictated by laziness rather than my stupid school's organization? Now, my IB coordinator asked me if it'd be pos…

Hi so my practice paper 1 for french is in a few days and it's worth a great deal of my semester mark but I have no idea how to prepare for it... We've done some practice ones in class before but we only did 2 texts max. at a time but I don't know how many texts are supposed to be in Paper 1.. I'm doing really bad in french right now because of how poorly i do on these practice papers so i really need to improve my mark drastically. I have some questions and if you could answer them that'd be great ! 1. How many texts are there? 2. What is the actual format of the paper? 3. Types of questions? 4. Is there just questions for each text all in the same format? If you have…

So for some reason, my school allows fluent students to take Language B, instead of giving them a different language option. We had practice orals last week, and of course the fluent kids scored a near perfect on their interactive oral. Their parents only speak Spanish at home. I just dont see how this is ethical. The schools get a false reputation for language B curriculum, and the students taking the classes while fluent earn an easy grade. The language B is specifically designed for students who don't speak the language, not those who wish to earn an "easy 7". whats your school policy and take on this?

Hola, I'm not a native speaker, but I would like to have a rather dedicated and passionate native speaker, or anyone who is very fluent, to help me out because I've always loved spanish but the writing is sorta killing me in a sense. So all thats left to do is get a spanish buddy, since my teacher is little to no help at all. I do prefer to text because I am not on social media, but I wouldn't mind creating a Skype if necessary. Pretty much any time of the day is good for me. So please if you are willing to be my buddy please PM about it. Además, I would also like to expand my horizon on the spanish culture and I feel that through these interaction it would promote that.…

Hi, I just started IB this year and I'm quite a science /math oriented student so everything language/literature/writing/analysis based gives me hell (especially IB Languages A1-A2) My A1 language is Turkish Lit and my school doesn't offer any other group 2 language than English A2. French/Spanish/German B and ab initio are offered only as the 6th group-elective because of the Turkish educational system's obligations for the schedule, I cannot take french B as a lesson and have to do A2 English with everyone else even if I enter the French IB exam at the end. My other lessons are all time-consuming and challenging: Biology HL (will probably drop to SL next year, if i do i…

Hello everyone, I need advice on taking Spanish ab initio as a complete beginner! I decided not to do Mandarin B for IB only recently, so switched over to the only alternative- Spanish ab initio. The issue is now that I have to pick up this extremely new language. I know the ab initio courses are designed for the complete beginner, but through talking to my friends and reading some other posts, I know that most people who take an ab initio language already have a little experience in it or are proficient in a similar language (like French is to Spanish). My only background in other "similar" languages is the 6 months of French I did in lower Secondary (so basically I ca…
