So, I've been taking Mandarin for two years. Unfortunately due to staffing issues, we didn't have a Chinese teacher. Currently, I only know about half a year's worth of Chinese. Currently I am taking supplementary classes outisde of school to help me learn Chinese. For my IB cohort everyone taking Chinese is going to be placed in Ab initio. My question for anyone that took Mandarin Ab initio is that if you reccomend any form of outside classes to at least help get by in that class? Or would I be fine without it?

Help! I'm in first year IB, I'm failing spanish ab initio. I'm getting level 1s and 2s, and the other person in my class is doing a lot better than me. What do you suggest I do? If I work really hard from now till the exams, is it possible to get my grade up to a 5 or a 6? Is it possible with ab initio? I feel like I know no spanish at all. Thanks.

In Mandarin B SL, do you have to know fluent Chinese? Does the whole class learn in Chinese, like the teacher teaches in Chinese and everyone talks in Chinese in the class? I'm a bit worried because my speaking skills aren't so great.. Any advice on how the class is? Also, to those taking the same class, how long have you guys been studying Mandarin? Is it hard or easy for you?

I study Japanese, and I have been taking Japanese for 5 years now, but I still feel like I haven't found a method that works for me, for revising kanji, grammar, writing and speaking. quizlet works well for me, but it doesn't work as well as I think I could revise if I had another method. What ways do you all use to revise and learn your languages and grammar structures? thankyou

Hey Everyone, I was wondering whether there are any people who are fluent in Spanish (or are very good a it) who would be willing to read and comment on a practice written assignment I've done for Spanish ab initio? For ab initio we have to write a comparison between a cultural aspect of our own culture and a Spanish speaking culture. I don't need you to critique the content just the grammar. Just so you know, the actual written assignment will done in class under exam conditions, and we are not allowed to bring in any of our own notes or practice essays. This practice one I've done is not going to be formally assessed and will not count towards my mark or anything, so i …

English notice: I'm a relatively new member, so I was not sure where to put this. If an administrator or moderator thinks this is inappropriate or in the wrong section, I sincerely apologise. Basically, my school teaches Spanish. Unfortunately, I am quite bad at it, partially because we don't actually practise constructing sentences or producing new thought and conversation in Spanish. So most people don't really understand how to use the language, including myself. So I decided that there would certainly be people here who took Spanish as a language, or perhaps were already fluent in it. So, after a quick glance around, I decided I'd post this thread. After this note, it…

I'm having a hard time trying to choose between Ab Initio Japanese and Ab Initio French. The thing is that I already learned Japanese for a while and got a E certificate in J.Test, but the IB course will start from the very beginning. I don't really want to waste time in my Ab Initio class and so I'm thinking French is my other option. However I know there are a number of students in my year who have studied French before and I'm a little nervous about not catching up with them at first. I would be more than greatful if anybody can tell me what Japanese level a student is supposed to have at the end of the Ab Initio course. Is it any higher than N1? Thanks a lot for the h…

I am wondering how the SAT language subject tests compare in difficulty to SL language B exams, specifically SL German B and SAT II German. I was thinking of taking the German test in order to place out of a language requirement in uni, and the score I would need to receive is 650 or more. Thus, what is 650 roughly equivalent to? 6? 7? Also any tips for revision for the tests are greatly appreciated, I went through IB German with none, and even though it went decently I reckon a little revision would not hurt, just in case I actually end up studying German again...

Okay, so in my French AB Initio paper 2, I forgot to put 'de' before the infinitive when I was conjugating for recent pass. I've made this mistake around thrice in my answer. How many marks do you think will be cut for this out of 18? The remainder of the answer is fine, I think. I wrote around 200 words. (Minimum required is 100).

Okay, so I have my French Ab Initio exam on Monday and I was wondering, how hard it is to get a 6 in it? According to my calculations, I need at least a 30/40 in Paper 1 and an 18/25 in Paper 2. Does anybody have any notes they're willing to share or any tips which might help?

Does anyone know how many marks they take off if you do not reach the 250 minimum word count? In reality, how much will this affect one's score? Counted my words halfway through and was stupid and forgot to again before I handed the exam in. Great. Hoping that I had enough. ---On a side note, I am new to this website so if this post is in the wrong spot, my sincere apologies, forgive me.

Hi guys! So I will be starting the IB program next year, and Mandarin is my World Language. However, I have been in the class for two years in the Pre-Ib class. My lao shi is very nice, but we are moving very slow. Recently, the IB students took the Mandarin SL Exam and they said that they felt like they all failed I don't want this to be me next year! What can I do to prepare? Also, they said they could barely read the prompt and questions... is the exam really that hard I was thinking that going over all of the vocab during summer break and watching Chinese dramas would help. Anymore suggestions? Thank you for all of your help guys!!!

Hey guys! I have my end of years (not the finals) in like a week.. I have some real struggle with biology and chemistry HL. I have predicted my english B HL exam to be done with no problems whatsoever. However I realized today that I have barely been studying any english outside school (except all Ib homework which is in english), to be honest I don't really know what the exam will look like and whether they will be difficult.. For my mocks, all I ever really did to study for paper 1 was play videogames and eat cheetos. I'm predicted a 4 despite only understanding close to 5% of the vocab words (and by vocab I mean complicated words LOL) in every paper 1 I take, mostly because my paper 2 keeps pulling my grades up, but honestly I don't want to leave that up to chance if I can afford not to. Would any of you fellas know how to study for it? Or would any of you happen to have a list of the most used vocab words in paper 1 or something to that effect to help me and others study for it?

Hi guys! I'm taking Japanese B SL Paper 1 and 2 exams in May, and I'm kind of freaking out because (long story short, my teacher is kind of incompetent) no one at my school seems to be able to tell me a lot of details, so I was hoping people here might be able to help 1. I've been hearing about a list of kanji/vocabulary necessary for the IB exams, does anyone know where I can get that? 3. So my French class is primarily an AP course, with a few IB'ers (including myself) in it hoping to land an ok score on the HL exam. My teacher is pretty spacey and doesn't really know what's going on, and DEFINITELY has not given us any IB test prep-she only let us know about the IA like a week beforehand! Is there anywhere I can access any practice questions with markschemes, or really anything that will prepare me for the test beyond just knowing how to speak the language? Thanks!

Hello everybody, I want to write my extended essay in English. I live in Majorca and this is where Robert Graves lived. I want to compare his view of Mallorca and the view of his sons through their books. My tutor worries that maybe I should include another focus point apart from this. The three of them wrote books about their lives in Majorca and I thought it would be interesting. What do you think? Thank You

I'm doing Eng Lang & Lit HL (using Persepolis & The Pickup)... one thing I'm not entirely sure on is the 'context'. Do we need to write a separate paragraph on the texts history (as context normally mean background), or by context they simply mean we have to integrate our understanding of the book into the analysis?

Hi guys, Do you guys know of any particular way to prepare for the Spanish SL exam? I know by doing past papers which I plan on doing.. Any thoughts/advice on how to prepare?? I really want to score at least a 5. Thank you:)

Ok so during all my MYP years, every time I had like a french writing test, we were always given the topic we had to write about and so everyone just wrote something at home, memorised it and copied that down during the text. It was awesome. I loved french and life. BUT, now I have a french writing next week (thursday) and am like completely screwed coz this formula won't work. We are only being told that it's on the 1st unit, "Social relationships: moi et mes proches". So does anyone have any idea about how I should face this? Thanks

Hey everyone So my question is about the language B written assignment. Does the teacher or the student have to choose the text type? I know it has to be chosen from the paper 2 text types. The syllabus says : "Students produce a piece of creative writing that may be chosen from the recommended text types listed for paper 2 in this section." So I can't figure out whether it is the student or the teacher that chooses this text type. Thank you very much to anyone who can answer this question!

Hi, my Korean B individual oral has to be sent really soon and I haven't started recording yet. The option I chose was leisure and I was going to use a picture of Park Ji-Sung running or being tackled and falling to the groung. Do you think this will be appropriate? Hi guys, Does anyone know what the word/character count for Korean B SL is? (Korean is probably in characters) I'm assuming that there is a conversion factor between Korean and English like there is for Japanese and Chinese. My teachers are having difficulty finding out, so I was wondering if anyone here knew. Eg. 300-400 words english = _____ characters/words Korean? I would really appreciate any form of help. Cheers!
