I've barely done any ECs for the past 3 years. I know it's ridiculous. I don't know what I was thinking but I can't turn back time and I'm trying to fix the mistake I made. this summer I'm carrying out a "Campaign for a Cleaner Cairo" which is an environmental campaign I founded all by myself. it involves street cleaning and collecting recycling, and raising awareness about the importance of the environment's well-being overall. it's not a complete success because there aren't many willing volunteers. that's the only important/strong activity that I've done. I'll be a senior in a few weeks. What is something I can do that relates to politics (my intended major) that can h…

Hi all, Currently I am in a state of turmoil because I am having a horrible time deciding where to go to college. I live in Nevada and am deating between UC Davis and Boise State University (for by bachelors). After undergrad I plan on going to Med School. Here's the thing- I know that UC Davis would probably better prepare me for Med School. However, I have lots of family in Boise State and it would take the financial burdon away as well as having the support of family as opposed to living by myself in Davis, CA. My grades etc. are good enough to get me into the Honors College at Boise State but I still think Davis would give me better preperation for the future. He…

I'm wondering if it's any different from the American System with grades. I will be taking a gap year (2013 gap year, I'll start university 2014) so I will then send my actually IB scores out to Canada. I'm wondering though, if they'll just let me in with those grades (if I have total accumulated points required. Example: First option is University of British Columbia, 32 pts required for the business program) or will they also take my GPA into account a lot too. I hear Canadian universities also mainly look at the second semester of your junior year and the first semester of your senior year (in this case for me it would be my whole senior year). What are your thoughts/e…

I'm gonna be applying this fall to all my selected colleges. But the problem is I don't know which colleges to apply to. I have been told I should apply to 9 of them: 3 safeties, 3 reaches and 3 matches. But won't that be too much money for applications alone? I did my SAT in the spring of my junior year and got 1460 (really bad I know but I didn't sleep much the last night and hardly studied, was busy with school assessments) I'm studying my ass off for SAT right now and I think I might score around 1800 this time. I don't live in USA, so I don't know my GPA but I'm doing IB and these are the subjects I'm taking: Business HL English A HL Geography HL Spanish B SL Biolo…

Hi everyone! I'm looking into pursuing Neuroscience in the future, so, seeing as I'm applying for university this fall, I'm trying to figure out what universities would serve the best purpose for me. I'm planning on applying for an Ivy League after my undergrad, so I'm trying to focus on schools that would have the best sway for international applications. (I'm in Canada, so I would count as an international applicant to Ivy Leagues) So far, I'm looking into the University of Toronto, because they have a dedicated Neuroscience undergrad, as well as being ranked 10th in the world. McGill is also one of my choices, because they're very well known for their Neuroscience dedi…

I've heard a lot about how tough life sciences are at UofT, and how a large number of students drop out the first year. I was accepted into UofT for the fall semester, and was wondering if doing IB adequately prepares you for what lies ahead, and how the workload compares.

Hey, this question goes to the people who applied or got into USA universities. How much money and time have you spent to get into these unis? Taking into account filling Common app, SAT's and so on. Approximately of course.

Hey guys, I was accepted to a university in America. It's called Northeastern and it's pretty much in the middle of Boston. I need help trying to figure out if I should go because they are expecting a reply by the first of May. Does anybody know anything about Northeastern, is it a good university? P.S. I have other offers too but it would be great if somebody actually visited the campus before or something like that! the internet is failing to give me any good information. I'm only getting the same cheesy stuff over and over again: "northeastern is great" or "if you have the choice then go to northeastern" Thanks for your help guys!!!!! It's appreciated

I'm beginning my preparation for the SATs once again and this time I'm hoping to do everything a little differently than before. My weak part is critical reading so I'm aiming at learning a lot of new vocabulary. Though I want it to be time efficient, not just blind learning by heart. I tried making note cards on my computer (I use Mac and had app Anki before), though I believe there is still a better way. Has anyone had anything like Anki before? Or would you recommend software which would be the most efficient in this interminable learning process? Or any completely different strategies? Thanks a lot!

Hi guys! I have currently finished my first year (well, second if you take into account the pre-IB year) of the IB diploma that I'm doing in Finland. I've recently started thinking about applying into some fancy american universities (or colleges, not sure how you call them there), but then I found out that they could care less about my final exam results when admission is concerned (I'm aware that they give you credit if you do well in your HL subjects, but what I meant is that when they are deciding whether to ADMIT you, they don't take into account the finals results, because they admit you before you graduate from the IB). Now this is a problem, because I haven't be…

I'm thinking about applying to US(even though it's not my priority), I want to know how bad do I need to take subject SAT's? Is it required everywhere, even for International Students? I know I really need SAT and I'm going to take it, but I'm not sure about subject tests. Also, could you help me to pick what to take(if I have to)? I'm studying Lithuanian A1 , English B and Econ as HL's and Russian ab initio, Biology and Maths as SL's. My languages are not available in SAT's and I am not that good at English to take English related SAT's.There's no Economics test and I'm not even considering Biology as an option. I'm pretty good at Maths, but not so good to be in HL(I d…

Hi, as per recommendation by my EE mentor, I was researching for my EE and I ended up procrastinating So I decided to do some useful procrastination and research universities to finalize what I am going to do with my life after IB and I'm very confused about tuition, cost of living, etc. in universities. I'm thinking of Rotman Commerce, Schulich, or Western/AEO (Western pre-Ivey status thing :$)I've been reading their sites, but, as expected, they are not very straightforward (or so I think...) and I have no idea how much it will cost. I've been getting figures from $5000 to $30 000 per year in undergrad, which is very broad and overall unhelpful I was also wondering…

Hey, I got accepted into Life Sciences at U of T quite a while ago, but as the IB results day nears, I'm starting to question the conditions that they sent via courier. It's very vague and just says: Maintain your grades, especially in required courses and achieve the IB diploma. 1. The website says we need a minimum 28 for a PROVISIONAL offer of admission. In addition to the "achieve the IB diploma" line, does that mean that a 28 is no longer necessary? For a friend that was accepted into engineering, they actually stated that he cannot dip below 28, which is a lot more specific, but they don't put that on the Life Sciences offers which is odd. I'm not in danger of that,…

Hey guys, I'm currently doing the IB diploma programme in Finland, and I've just finished my first year. I was thinking of applying to an ivy league college, since they are pretty much the only colleges that offer sufficient financial aid (my family wouldn't be able to pay for pretty much any kind of education). The problem that I am facing in applying to these colleges, is that I am pretty much at the end of the priority list: I'm and international applicant, I'm doing the IB (as I understand American colleges prefer the American high school program, even though it might be less challenging in some areas), I'm not a representative of any kind of a minority and I requir…

Hi everyone, Whenever I look at university admission websites, they say you need to have a total of x points to get into the program. Which is fine, but my question is - does that mean as long as my final total is 36, for example, I'm in? Like I'm a poor math student, but I excel in courses like biology, history and chemistry. And the worst case scenario is getting a 3 or 4 in math, but can I still get into a Life Sci program here? Thanks guys, I'm just super worried.

I'm an Australian so my teachers/people in general don't know much about uni entry in the USA. Here, the only thing that counts is your final ENTER score, which for me would be my final IB grade. I know in the USA they place a lot more emphasis on obviously SATs and also your high school transcript and extracurricular activities. Also, even though I was born and have always lived in Australia, I'm an American citizen as well, this means I have the same chances for financial aid as Americans right?

Hey, so this summer I was planning to either participate in a research camp in Ottawa, Canada.. which count for high school credits.......... or enroll in a first year university course that counts for uni credit (prolly take bio, chem, math, or eng)... which one would be better on the resume when i apply to US university? Also, is volunteering abroad a good idea? Please share your ideas! Thank you very much i can also take university course in september to december. but i think that wouldn't help much towards uni application because early US application ends in november.

I'm pretty dead set on going to Waterloo for Engineering (though I do have some other schools on my list just in case) but I've never understood how their acceptances work. I'm in grade 11 right now and in about 6 months university applications will start. I know that the course that I want to take requires 5 specific courses and 1 other 12U course. But is that all the university looks at when they're accepting? I'm almost certain I won't be accepted early with my Grade 11 marks because they aren't exactly amazing. However, university applications are due before the end of 1st semester every year so I'm wondering how they choose applicants since I wouldn't have taken all …

I've read both on this forum and throughout the web about scholarships but none are able to give me a number. So, on the Waterloo website, I read that they strongly recommend that applicants participate in their math and computing contests. But does anybody know how much weight is given to the actual scores? The reason I ask is because I did the Canadian Computing Competition (senior) back in February and I did absolutely horribly. Like 3/75. I could partially blame it on technical difficulties (the computer I did it on had tons of quirks and the new online marking system also had some problems) but I'd say it was mainly due to stress (it happens). (Actually, I looked over the problems afterwards and realized that they were not that bad) Also, do they only look at the most recent…

I think it's my main field of intrest. I already know Java, but I'm just not sure that I find it entirely "fun." I seem to love the application of the pure sciences like chemistry and physics a lot more, but I want to incorporate computers into it as well. What would be a good career plan for that? Which schools would be good picks in the U.S? I live on the east coast, so I'm thinking Georgia Tech is my best bet.

Hey guys, since there are a few U of T applicants around I thought I'd ask a question that I've had for some time now just in case anyone can help. There seems to be an issue in the U of T portal (and specifically the "required documents" section). I am attaching an image of it so that you get the problem. Ok so initially when I first applied this section only said that I must arrange with the IBO to release my results electronically to the U of T. I told the IBO to send them my results (you actually have to fill in a form and send it to them by post), two or three weeks later the portal showed that they have received them by adding the "International Baccalaureate F…

I'm in Grade 11 IB (aka Year 1) in an Ontario public school and my question is, if I'm getting 70s on my report card, is university going to give me higher marks? I know that the general perception is that your marks decrease by 5-15% as you transition from high school to uni but that I think only applies to the Academic (ie regular high school) program. IB is significantly harder than Academic in my school atleast. My coordinator says that IB is harder than anything you will ever do in your future, but he's probably biased. I've heard that IB is just as hard as first year but then university gets harder. I've hard from separate sources that first-year uni is the hardest …
