Hello! I need to take two SAT II test in order to fulfill my admission requirements for some universities, I was wondering if I could take French SAT II with my knowledge from French Ab. I began to take French since 9th grade in school, besides that I am taking personal classes since 10th grade. I took French A2 and I felt pretty well actually, I want to take the B1 on May. Do you think I will be able to take test? If not, which ones do you recommend? I can´t take SAT II Spanish since it´s my first language

Hey guys! I am working on my written assignment in English B higher level and some inconsistency between my 2 teachers and guide emerged. They say that the rationale has limit to 250 words, whereas the syllabus says only about 150 words.. What is your opinion about the problem? What's more, the guide states that the WA should be handwritten, but aren't we supposed to upload it via IB online page and write it electronically? Please let me know what it looks like in your school.

Hello there, Next year im going to be starting the IB. For my Lang B I've chosen german SL. Right now im just so confused because the teacher I have this year makes it sounds realllyyyyyyyyyyy hard whereas my teacher who I had last year even asked me if I wanted to do HL. Something im kind of nervous about is the grammar (duhh, it's german). I would just like if someone could explain about how good they expect you to be in B SL? Like do they expect you to know declensions and stuff like that or how good are we supposed to be? Thank you so much!

Hello IB Survival, Before you start questioning the legitimacy of this post based upon my signature, French 17C (the course I'm taking, the prerequisite for French SL) is offered at my school as the French ab initio syllabus minus IAs and stuff (IB extensions). In other words, I am learning the same content as the ab initio students with dilution here and there. Is it possible that someone with knowledge of the French language help me edit this horrendous paper I've scrapped together? It's due tomorrow and I know I'll fail if it remains unedited... I was sick the day the teacher was supposed to edit it and now he is refusing to help me! By the way, I was shuffled all…

Hello all! I was wondering if taking Spanish B without studying it in school before would be a good decision, and if it is possible? I've studied Spanish at home etc for 2 years and I understand a lot of the language but I'm not fluent, but I don't really have any 'proof' (like grades) from it, but is that necessary to have? Thanks. And by that I mean Spanish SL.

I'm doing a little better in french due to some help from the wonderful people on here. I do have a severe vocabulary problem, however. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to learn lots of vocab, verbs and their conjugations without just writing each word 5-10 times. Thanks!

Okay so I am planning on doing IB French B SL next year, 2016. I am very passionate about french as a language and I have been studying for Roughly 3-4 years. I wouldn't say I am bad at it, but i also wouldn't say i am fluent, not even the slightest. What are some requirements you should have to do French SL? How could I prepare for this? Thanks

So as the title suggests I am currently taking French B and am horrible at it to say the least. I can barely manage to write 100 words for our practice written assignments and even then I struggle with conjugations and repeat myself because of my extremely limited vocabulary. I've tried learning the grammar with my teacher as well as on my own but I find it really complicated and once I get it, I forget it eventually. It's also hard for me to practice since I have no exposure to the language outside class and watching movies and videos in French leaves me confused. I am hoping to score a 6 but it just seems less and less achievable with every test I get back. My questio…

The IB study guide says we need to know how to structure particular text types. I haven't learned how to do some of them, and was wondering if anyone could tell me how it should be structured/formatted? Sorry I just don't know how to do a lot lol • Article • Brochure, leaflet, flyer, pamphlet, advertisement • Essay • Interview • Introduction to debate, speech, talk, presentation • News report • Official report • Review • Set of instructions, guidelines • Written correspondence Thanks!

Hi At the moment I am on exchange in Japan, in the holidays before I begin IB. Next year I am planning to do SL Japanese and I was wondering about the kind of stimulus that you receive for your individual oral and any tips about in general. Also if anyone has some topics/grammar things to work on that will be important in SL Jap, while I am in Japan please let me know P.S. If anyone knows any places for Jap SL past papers that would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys, I need help from one of you, I have to ask three questions to a Third Culture Kid. To those of you who do not know what a Third Culture Kid, or TCK: “A third culture kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture." Quote from tckid.com, (full reference at the end of the post) Here are my three questions, the answers do no have to be long, it all depends on you, and of course, I will reference you, and the forum in my work. 1- What do you think you have learned from being a TCK? 2-What do you think makes you different from others? 3- As a TCK, you have a broader understanding of the…

Hello! so next year I will be starting the IB program. I feel pretty good about it except for one subject; German. Im doing german Language B SL. I actually really started liking german last year as I had an absolutely amazing teacher (who I don't have this year and i won't have her for the IB either), the thing is, I SUCK AT GRAMMAR. Like in any language. I never really learnt it. As everyone knows german has the easiest grammar everrr *cough*. No, but jokes aside, I love doing oral presentations and I'm good at writing and reading and stuff like that. For example my last two tests (where we have one grammar part and one writing part) I've gotten 18/20 points on the wr…

So I recently got my predicted grades and my teacher awarded a 5 to me in French. To be honest, I know I'm pretty good at French and I know I can score a 6 or maybe higher. My question is, is scoring a level 7 in French difficult for a level 6/5 student? How did you prepare for your French exam and have you ever dealt with a teacher like mine?

I asked my IB coordinator about this, and as I'm fluent in Swedish (on an A2 level, but I still make some grammatical errors occasionally, but my pronunciation is completely perfect) she recommended me taking either Swedish A SL or Swedish B HL. My initial reaction was taking Swedish A SL, but now I'm contemplating whether that would actually be a wise choice. My mother is a Swedish teacher and when I show her past papers of Swedish B HL, she frowns and says that it's very basic material, meaning that it's probably something I would be able to get an easy 7 in, because the grammatical errors I make are extremely minor and in oral conversations I never make them and can co…

Was wondering if someone could go over the rules regarding Accord avec Participe Passe. Pretty sure this is what I know so far: If you're using Etre -> don't make the agreement. If you're using Avoir, there are two cases with the direct object and indirect object but I don't really remember. Could someone help me out? There are also additional cases with Combien de, quelle, etc... Thanks!

Hey! So next year i'm starting the IB and I would really like to do well in it. For Lang B i'm taking Language B german SL. I'm from the lowest group of students who are allowed to take german Lang B. Only about 20% from a grade at our school usually take german (usually the people who are native speakers or really good), but I rly rly hate french and I find german so interesting. This year I want to improve A LOT and i've gotten a teacher that's... eh... just fine I guess, she seems rly demotivated so... How are some tips on how to get reallyyyy good at a foreign language? Fyi i've read german for 3 years (this is now my 4th) Thank you so much! //Alex

Hi everyone, With final November exams rapidly approaching I've been counting up points and trying to work out which subjects need the most work. This is a relatively easy process for Maths/Physics/Chem and even History, but I'm not fluent in German so it's exceptionally tough to see my papers the way a marker would as I might be able to do in other subjects. The high grade boundaries for Language B scare me - although my German teacher is brilliant, I'm slightly concerned that I might have been overmarked and I'd like to know where I sit definitively. The IB claim to not expect fluency at SL - but I really have no clue what that means relative to my own writing. Coul…

Hello! So my school doesn't offer the language B course I want to take (swedish language B SL) and apparently you're not allowed to self-teach language B courses. I know a teacher from another school close to mine, she doesnr teach IB but she does teach EB. I was wondering, would she be allowed to "teach" me swedish language B (wouldnt be hard for her as I am basically fluent in swedish). Anyways, would that work if she could teach me even if she's not in my IB school?? Thank you so much for answers! //Alex

Hello! So, I am swedish, living outside of Sweden. I have a question about the languages.. My school only teaches english, french and german. I've decided that for my language A it would be smarter to actually have a real teacher so i want to go with english Lang A. Then I really wanted to choose swedish Lang B (as i am not very good at german nor french), but apparently the IB doesn't let student self-teach themselves in language B. I was wondering, as a teacher, would that have to be like a real teacher or could like my mom or someone be my teacher? I realise that i will probably have to end up taking german anyways but I wanted to ask you guys if there is some kind of …

Hi everyone, In Language B SL Paper 2, a limit is given on how much you should write. (In German it's 250-400 words) Is there a penalty for exceeding 400 words? It's remarkably easy to do when you get carried away in the flow, and after writing a long piece of work I suspect it'd be tough to cut down under exam conditions. Do the markers count words? Will they realise? And if they do, does a significant penalty apply?

I have been studying Chinese for a couple of years now, leading me to pick Chinese B SL as my group 2 subject. After a month into this course I am finding it a little challenging. So just for note would it hamper the way universities look at me if I was to drop from B SL to AB initio or will that not matter. And is AB initio really that easy for someone who has been studying the language for a few years? Or is this just an exaggeration. Any previous experience and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

So we just did our first critique. Mine was a standard "I don't like it here are my 3 reasons to conclude I don't like it because 3 reasons [shortened down to a sentence each]". My teacher said that it was not following her exemplars, which were real French critiques on films/books pulled from some magazine. I am confused: on the IB exam, are we supposed to be like real-life critiques and sound as pompous and obnoxious as possible? EDIT: didn't mean to spam post...realized I couldn't delete the post after I posted all 3 of em. Oh well.

Hello! So, for my IB im planning on choosing HL Maths and HL physics I then thought i would choose as my third HL chemistry, realising how hard that would be i decided that i should maybe choose HL Economics instead. Right now I have a subject called social studies (history, geography, and economics), we're doing economics right now and I've just realised that i tbh don't even find econ that interesting... So, a few days ago I sat in german enjoying the lesson (as I really like german, and is probably one of the few people that actually do) and thought that I maybe should choose HL german instead.. So I've been working on my EE in English B Literature and I read my books on an e-book reader(Kindle). Because pages aren't shown on kindle, only locations and percentages( for example LOC 456 - 4%) my question is whether can I write the location numbers instead of page numbers, when I want to cite a quote from the book? Or should I just buy the books and look for the pages?

Basically: I studied German at my middle school and freshman year, now I'm in the pre-IB and have to pick a second language. This school does not offer AB initio nor do they offer German. I've spoken to my coordinator and she says that I have two choices; study AB initio (as in, start studying a new language) during my pre-IB year (for example, Mandarin, or continue with German during the pre-IB), but then I would have to study either Swedish or English at Language B, or I could go straight into sophomore Spanish or French, study my heart out for a year and then go into language B for French or Spanish. I'm a native Swedish speaker and got an A- in Swedish my freshman y…
