Hey Everyone, I have been assigned to write a WT2, and the text that will be used as a basis for analysis is "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. I chose the fifth question, which is: How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose? Okay, so I know that I can elaborate on that topic, specifically talking about the deviations as the author doesn't really follow the conventions of the genre and doesn't want to make the reader understand what a true war novel would. The teacher told me that I should find another text, a real war novel, and point out the differences to prove my point. He's strong on that, he won…

Hi, I want to study English A Lang&Lit at higher level to get into a very good university to study law. Unfortunately my school doesn't allow Physics HL and English A HL to be combined and I need these two because I'm also interested in studying Engineering. I can go to the English A Lang&Lit standard level class but since my chances for getting into the best universities are a lot higher if I have English A Lang&Lit at HL instead. So If I go to the standard level english class, will I then be able/allowed to self-study the higher level part of the english course? And how hard will it be to self-study only the higher level part since I will have a fairly good…

So, my teacher hasn't properly explained to us what our FOA needs to consist of, other than that it's supposedly an "oral written task". My first FOA is fast approaching (very very fast), and I'm utterly confused. Do I just take a source text and analyse it? I've seen many sample FOA's revolving around staged talk shows etc., but I'm still confused. Google/YouTube doesn't help much either. Could anyone explain to me, in detail, what exactly an FOA is and what I need to do? All I know is that I need to have a source text, choose a topic from either Part 1 or 2, and somehow meet a learning objective. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

My teacher has just instructed us to start brainstorming ideas for our first written task. I've already run my idea, which is the representation of female Goddesses across different cultures, times, and religions, by her and she has approved it. If anyone has any feedback on this I would be grateful. Also, if anyone knows any texts I can use for my analysis, could you please comment them below? Thank you

Hey everyone, I'm taking French A Language and Literature HL and we're finishing up the Written Task 2 - the essay response to one of the six prescribed questions in the Lang Lit Subject Guide. I chose to do the question: How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? and need to translate it. Does anyone have the French language copy of the subject guide with the questions in French? I can't find it online. If so, could you please tell me how they phrase that question? It's question 1 in the Power and privilege section. Thanks!!

Hi I'm writing my first practice written task two and my teacher hasn't really given me much guidance and it's due next week!!!! How exactly do I go about formatting this task as well as how do I incorporate aspects of the text in it.... Studying: A streetcar named desire Question: Which social groups are marginalised, excluded or silenced within the text? I understand the question I just don't really know how I would answer it in an essay format...

Hi everyone! In English, we know that our answers can be based on our own analysis and interpretation as it depends upon our views. But I happened to come across a rather funny paper which my guess is IA. My teacher said that she had got it from OCC. I happened to glance it, it is about to write the guide (though I am taking Lit, still I am curious). Here are the contents (which I remember) "Guide to survive in jungle by XXX" Life in the jungle can be very dangerous as well as exciting. My survival guide will give you advice how to survive in jungle. For that first you need to be stranded in jungle, then only my guide will be useful. (Who in right mind would go and v…

So this question is about Paper 2. When writing a Paper 2 is it safe to assume the examiner has already read the text you are writing about and has studied in detail. The drama texts I am reading are fairly well known but nonetheless should I give lengthy descriptions of the context of the plot or not?

I'm trying to get ideas on what to do my FOA on Topics we have worked with: -Advertising -Political speeches -The new medias/social media -Objectivity in the news/news reporting So it has to be something to do with those topics above. Things I came up with and thought would be cool: 1. Compare anti and pro smoking (or drinking) commercials. 2. How audience influences the language used in a speech. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated

I am having trouble searching online for tips and guides for the Paper 1 and Paper 2 Language and Literature exams and my final exams are coming up soon. As always I came to the IB survival forum at first as I always found guides for the different assessments but to my surprise I did not find a guide for these assessments. So I would like to the members who are more experienced in these tasks to create a guide for these two papers as it would benefit a lot of the members in the present and future who are using this forum. Thanks for all the people who create such guide and give tips, your work is really appreciated.

Hello, Our English teacher gave us several poems of which we should choose only 2 to compare & contrast them, in order to practice paper 1 in Lit/Lang HL. This is the poem. I really understand the 2nd and 3rd stanzas, but the 1st and the 4th ones are a little bit confusing. 1. Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer utters itself. So, a woman will lift her head from the sieve of her hands and stare at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift. 2. Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth enters our hearts, that small familiar pain; then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth in the distant Latin chanting of a train. 3.…

Hi, I have to do my second FOA soon on Part I (Language in Cultural Context). I was thinking of looking at code switching in popular culture, I have a video of Obama speaking in African American Vernacular English (or Black English - technical term!) at an NAACP conference which I would contrast with an extract of his speech on healthcare (just an extract because the speech is pretty long). I'd analyse the language changes and why he changes the way he talks. It would kind of link to the "Demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and context." objective. Is that an OK idea for an FOA on Part I or is it too much Part II? Thanks!!

Hi fellow IB students, I'm a junior in IB taking IB/AP Lang. & Comp. I really want to do well on my oral (A1?, I'm not sure what my oral is classified as, could anyone clear this up for me?) this June. The one where you have to discuss a selected poem from your assigned poet and an excerpt from a selected novel read in class. Honestly guys, how do you go about preparing/delivering. After they randomly select the poem, what do they ask you (describe the poem?, what's the theme?)- kind of vague-. How should I go about making a really strong organizing thought/statement for each poem/novel/text. And what are the steps I should go about when speaking? I know there really …

Hey Guys! I need some quick help! One of my written tasks is based on Macbeth and I'm completely out of ideas. I want to make it something interesting and engaging but nothing seems to be coming to me. For my previous two written tasks I have done, I did an article and an Advertising Pitch. I'm kind of clueless with this one. I was thinking maybe a Eulogy? Any ideas would be great Thanks so much!

Hello everyone, I have to submit my written tasks in e few hours. Some weeks ago I asked that what I should do when I have taken too many inspirations from sources and not putting reference notes on Written Task 1 (the creative one). There was certainly on who said that I should reference notes and the other one said that I should not because I will hand them in in hard copy. I have decided to put reference notes. However, I asked my teacher to scan it to me for over a week ago and not she said that which websites it can be taken inspiration of and she says that it doesent make sense to put reference notes since it should be creative! I am totally freaking out and cryin…

Hey guys, I am higher level Literature and Language student and I just had my IOC. I feel decent about it... i guess you always think of other things you should have said. Anyway, I am a little bit worried about the length of the IOC. My teacher told me to round it up at the ten minute mark for questions. In total the IOC was about 13 minutes. Is this ok? Or should I have talked longer before questions?

I am going to write a Written Task type 2 on part 4 of the Language and Literature IB. It is going to be about the lyrical ballads by William Wordsworth, with the following question: How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? I am thinking about comparing the interpretation of a person in 2014 to someone in the industrial revolution. I just don't know if I have to pick one of the lyrical ballads, and then which one. And I also have difficulties creating a thesis for this question. I tried to find some other written tasks with the same question, but they don't seem to have a one sentence thesis... Please help me

Hi, I'm currently working on my Written Task 2 and have chosen question two as my question for analysis: If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? I've seen varying examples online in which the student bases his/her answer on either a) one criterion only (eg. focuses specifically on a different TIME/era) or b) answers all criteria (albeit producing much shorter, simpler analysis). The question is vague in the sense that all criteria are separated by "or", so I do not know how the IBO wants me to approach this question or even the best way to do it. I'd appreciate specific feedback or goo…

Hey guys, I'm really worried about Paper 2. The two texts we have taken in class are "A Doll's House" & a collection of Sylvia Plath's poems. The problem is the poems as I don't know how to approach them. We have not been given a lot of advice & tips for Paper 2 in class so I am struggling. My question is, can anyone give just a brief guide or method to follow for Paper 2? & do I write about the poems taken in general or do I choose a certain poem? thanks

On March 6 I have to submit my two written tasks. I am not worried about WT2 because it is a critical essay and I have put reference in it as well. However for my WT1- the creative one- I have got a lot of inspiration from the internet about personal letters to Daisy (from Great Gatsby) and know I have used the free plagiarism checker online to see how much I got from the internet. I am worried since I do not want to be expelled and when I did the WT1 from last year I did not realize how serious people took when it comes to plagiarism. Now I just want to ask you all if they will scan our WTs' for English. I know they certainly did if for my IAs and EE etc? To what extent …

Hi, I'm starting my 2nd year of IB really soon (I have exams on November) and I'm kind of worried about my Language and Literature course this year. I'm taking English A: Language and Literature, and the first year was fine, but now that I'm going into the literature portion of the course, I don't really know how to prepare for the classes. Does anyone have tips on how to prepare for the literature portion, or what I should do during the semester to do... well? (By the way, we don't know which works we'll be studying yet, so I can't read ahead. ) Thanks in advance!

When you know that you either will be picking Romeo and Juliet, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Great Gatsby. However I know that there will be three extracts from each book. Can you people guess where the teacher will be picking from each book? I am very worried about Romeo and Juliet since the language is sooooooo complex. I will appreciate your help.

I'm not necessarily good at grammar (English is a second language) and so I wouldn't be able to detect it if I did a mistake. This will be gaged through FB likes, Twitter likes, and whatever else kind of social media posts. I really need this A so if you guys could just help by liking the page for my word that would be awesome. Thank you! https://www.facebook.com/itstintinnabulation

Hi all, I'm taking Swedish A: Language and Literature at a higher level and I was wondering what to do with the learning outcomes for WT1 and prescribed questions for WT2. Both the learning outcomes and prescribed questions are published in English and not available in Swedish. In my rationale when referring to the learning outcome, should I translate it to Swedish or use the English version? Similarly with WT2, should I translate the prescribed question I'm doing or use the English version? How did you guys do who take languages where the learning outcomes and prescribed questions are not available in that language? Thanks.

Hello, I have got submit my 2nd Written task 2 by the end of this month, but I don't know how to start. I have already submitted my 1st written task 2 and I have got 14/20 and my teacher said it was not really a good/deep critical response to my prescribed question. Anyways.. Hi, so i'm a first year IB student and our class is approaching our IOP date next week. The work ive chosen to focus on is Life of Pi (The other choice was Persepolis). As for my topic, I was looking to explore the relationship between all 3 religions that Pi followed, and how it helped him in his journey, as many believe you can't follow 3 religions at once. My problem lies in the fact that a criterion of the presentation is to show knowledge and understanding of the work, and i feel as though my topic would take me off on a tangent too often while trying to explain the similarities between each religion. Also, i can't think of an effective way of presenting my IOP othe…

I have my exams around the corner. And, this would be the first exam I'm writing. How much time would you recommend I spend making the structure + planning of the essays? I'd done a diagnostic before. Needless to say, I spent most of the time planning and I ended up not mentioning a lot of key ideas. The book we're having Paper 2 on is 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. Any suggestions on how I might study? Also, any other pointers would be appreciated. Cheers,

Good evening fellow students, I am momentarily debating on what topic / text type to choose for my Written Task 1 since we have to hand in our proposal very soon. I love writing creative texts, such as fictional reports or diaries. I would very much like to write some sort of pastiche. The two topics I have thought about are: (also discussed in class) - Disney movies and racism / maybe sexism - background influencing language usage Now how could I combine the topics I find interesting and the text type I would like to write in? I would be very thankful for a response! Thank you very much, Leonie

Writers often use a character who is alienated from his or her culture or society in order to explore cultural or social values. Examine this idea with reference to at least two works studied. How should I write a commentary relating of mice and men and A Doll's House/Antigone to this question?

Hello folks I need some help with writing my English Written Task (part 3). I decided to write a 'letter of reccomendation' from a director to a producer in which the director promotes a play (originally written by Dario Fo). For my first draft I picked the name of an actual producer and director who have worked together before. The names are Valentine and Shayne Edwards. No offence, but they sound a bit silly. I would like to use some different names, but I can't think of anything. Can anyone maybe help me with this? Thanks.
