To all English Lang&Lit SL, does anybody have any teacher hand-outs or recommendations about how to structure a Paper 1 Commentary? In the following format maybe if possible: (Just writing what I already know) Introduction: Author, Genre, Theme, Thesis Paragraph 1: Paragraph 2: Paragraph 3: Conclusion: Any advice is dearly appreciated.

Hello Everyone! I'm really having a real problem with my Paper2. The books I'm studying are The Whale Rider and the Poems of Pablo Neruda, none of which appear in any study website . The problem I'm having here is that I never know how to incorporate both the context and the stylistic devices to answer the prompt question. That is my weak point. I consulted my teacher. But she was of no use. She said it's 'skills' and would not advise me further on how to achieve this so-called 'skill' she's talking about. I'm good at analysing literary features and all the devices the author use as well as their effects. However, I don't know how to use it to answer questions like "…

Hey, So we've been asked to come up with our outline for our Written Task 2 over here, and I have no problem with that. My problem is I still don't have a topic! I'm completely lost in terms of formulating the question and what the guidelines are. Help please? The texts we've read are: 1. The River Between by Ngugi wa Thiong'o 2. Assorted poems by Nissim Ezekiel 3. Rasselas Prince of Abyssinia by Samuel Johnson. Please help, and thank you in advance!

Before going onto the easter break, my teacher told me that if i was aiming for 18+ marks on my paper 2, i had to learn quotes and be able to use them in nearly every single paragraph. I have decided to open this thread so that all of us can share our quotes, which we can then gather and learn em. I'm planning to update this thread as i get quotes. Don't be shy to share whatever you have as long as it is related to the topic.

hi my class has read the novel 'a scanner darkly' and now must write a commentary on a chosen 40 line passage in the book. if anyone has ever read the book, what would you suggest as being an appropriate passage that effectively conveys the use of language and effect (in terms of language issues such as register, perspective, meaning rather than what my teacher calls 'lame' i.e. alliteration, metaphor etc.). Thanks a lot

Hi All, Our English teacher has started preparing us for our SL paper 1 (unseen commentary). There seems to be a dispute as to how long we get for the paper. Our teacher has suggested that we get 1.30 PLUS 20 minutes of planning time separate to that 1.30. It seems a little odd to me and my teacher refuses to confirm whether we do or not. Does anyone have any more information about it? Thanks!

Hey, I have never used this before, so I don't know if this topic has occured before. My creative written task is done, but my rationale is 55 words too long. What do I do, I just handed it in to my teacher for official grade. Will it be a fail, because my task itself is not too long... Help!

I now someone'll be irked for my waste of bandwidth, but I just have a simple subjective question out there if anyone is willing: What is considered a good score on the Works in Translation Literary Essay? To clarify, I'm referring to the 1200-1500 analytically essay based upon teacher-developed prompt. Of course it morphs into individual topics of discussion, but it was made clear to me we have to start with the original teacher's prompt. I ask because I'm nervous about my own grade on the essay. My teacher reviewed our papers and gave each of his students and awarded me a measly 10 out of 22 (12 out of 25 including the other criteria). I've edited my paper since then…

Hi, I am doing HL for Lang and Lit and have completed the main text answering one of the six questions for my written task 2. I understand that an outline must also be written, which is a substitute to a rationale. My teacher's instructions were not very clear in terms of how an outline should be written (ib style) and what is in the criteria in the guide seems to be a little vague as well. Can someone tell me more specifically how an outline (meeting the ib requirements) should be written and how it is different from a rationale. Thanks~!

So for my world lit paper, I need to create a topic about Ibsen's Ghosts. I have one, but I'm not sure if its any good. Feedback please? How does Ibsen use the themes, 'Society's Expectations' and 'Deceit and Denial' in his play Ghosts, to develop the characters Mrs. Alving, Pastor Manders, and Engstrand?

I was thinking of giving my written task a little twist and writing on Things Fall Apart in regards to question 4, Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text, focusing on how the colonizers in the novel are being marginalized and how that may be unfair to white readers. Do you guys have any ideas on what to include? Thanks

guys im quite confused as to how the reflective statement should look like...i know we are supposed to write it after the class discussion but does that mean we need to write it during the class? if so it means that it's supposed to be handwritten? apparently that's what my teacher thinks but since it's worth three marks and is sent to ib shouldn't it look more official? :/

Hi, I am currently finalizing my Critical Response (Written Task 2) for my HL language class. I answered one of the six questions and I wondered if my response also has to show an understanding of the learning outcomes of the Part the text is chosen. Maybe you know from your teacher or you can tell me from the criteria?! Thanks in advance :-) ____________________ The following criteria apply to the criticial response that HL students write on one of the six prescribed questions. Criterion A - Outline - 2 marks For the critical response, students are asked to write a brief outline of the task that includes the following: The prescribed question to which the task refers Th…

Hello, fellow IBers! I have been taking the IB diploma for half a year now, and so far the only thing we have handed in is our first Written Task. We have been doing a lot of reading, so far we have read 3 out of the 6 literary works we are supposed to have read within these two years. Is this unusual? My teacher said it was difficult to grade us on the half-year report card because the only thing she had to look at was our Written Task 1.

Hi guys, I know that IB recently renamed the paper for English to Written Assignment and that it has a word count range of 1,200-1,600. However, one of the lead staff for my school told me that I must include my Reflective Statement that my Written Assignment is based on.. Is there a specific word count for this Reflective Statement that I must follow? Does this reflective statement go with the Written Assignment- adding more word count to it? Thank you, Valentina

English A L&L SL Hi, we have our WT and FOA due in a couple of weeks. I have decided to write about Language and Power. I was thinking of analyzing a speech for my WT and write in form of a article, and later presenting it to the class for the FOA. I am considering either analyzing Obamas victory speech in the 2012 elections or possibly making up what could have been Romneys victory speech if he would have won. I would like to know what you thing, i welcome all type of critic, positive or negative. I would like to know which topic you think fits the WT criteria/approach the best. How should i approach the topic and how i can improve? I thank you in beforehand.

Hello. Is there a major difference between English HL, and SL? I'm asking because I'm considering. I went to an "Enriched English" class during 9th grade, ended up with a B-. Didn't like the teacher very much, and found the topics quite... meh. Odysseus, for example. I don't think I had a lot of determination, and such. However, I went to GCSE level in 10th grade, and was the top student with an A+. My teacher recommended I go to IB. However, 9th grade has scarred me. If IB is boring, I don't think I could handle it, as well as group projects. I DREAD group projects. I love reading, though. I would just hope it would be interesting. Sorry for the long explanation. Is th…

Hey guys, I'm desperate I have an English exam tomorrow where I have to compare and contrast two texts and I'm not really good at it. Do you guys have some helpful tips? Maybe regarding the structure of the essay? I don't really care about using sophisticated words and fancy phrases, I just want a simple structured, not confusing essay. That's good enough for me. So, just any tips you can think of? Thank you.

Is this compulsory? because for my topic, it's more focused on the book and there's nothing much to analyse from the movie.

So my teacher is partly evil and decided it would be fun to swap around our written tasks so we are doing written Task 2 for grade 11 as our first written task, if that makes sense. Anyway I have to choose a topic involving media in some way, we have read 1984 if this helps... I am not good at Media studies so I have no ideas!! These are the prescribed questions we are given: How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? Hello guys, This morning I received my recommendation for my IB package. Unfortunately, I got a standard B for English and it's really disappointing. I tried to persuade my teacher to give me chance to try English A lit and lang. Finally, he gave me 3 months to try on this subject and he said that if next year if I got less than 4 for the first assessment, I would have to drop this subject to English B. Now I have to try my best to overcome this obstacle but I struggle to find useful guides which can help me to boost my grade. Can you guys please give some online sources that help students improve their writing? Thank you.

So were taking 1984 in my English SL class, and we are required to do an IA on it. We haven't really analyzed it deeply, so we only know about the things that are obvious in the book. Our IA should be creative, like a letter to Big Brother or posters, and it should be about 900-1200 words long. Any ideas? What did you guys do for your IAs?

I have a few questions. 1) I am in English A SL and we've been given the "Written Task 1" for next week. Can someone explain the details of it to me, or link me to a source? As far as I understand, we have to choose one of the poems we studied (by W. Owen) and write about the language he uses. We need 800-1000 words, I have no idea how I can manage that... Apparently it shouldn't be an essay, but can be e.g. a newspaper article. What are some other examples/ideas? I'd also appreciate if someone told me where I could find a sample paper. 2) We're being given only a week to do this, so is it like a practice one, will we have to do another Written Task 1? Also, will the IA c…

I didn't find anything difficult in the beginning of the course but as time goes on I find it more and more difficult.
