I'm writing up my written task one however, I wasn't given any clear guidance with the rationale for my piece. This is the first written task I've done. How do I write it? What do I include? Are there any specific pieces of information that I need to include? Thank you!

I have to turn in my WT1 first draft in two weeks and I want to write about language and power, and perhaps write a blog / editorial. The problem is, I'm not very sure whether the topic I've chosen corresponds to the marking criterias. I want to write about the influence and status of English in China, but as English is not one of China's official languages, there isn't a very big conflict around this particular topic. Most of my classmates seem to be writing about different variants of English and their status in the world. So I'm wondering if any of you guys know whether my topic is okay for WT1?

Hello! I am going to write my first written task 2 very soon and was hoping I could get some advice. I have decided to write about Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which is one of the works we have studied and the one I liked the most. I am thinking about doing question 3) How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Here I could discuss how the social group of Kambili (the main character), which is rich and catholic, compares to the social group of her Grandfather and Aunt, which is more focused on the old Gods of Nigeria and are not very rich. Do you think this is a good idea? Am I on the right track?

Hey, I have to decide my subjects in a few months. For english, I had originally decided to take SL language and literature, as I haven't studied literature at gcse level. However, after looking through the IB options booklet, I realized that Lang and Lit is 70% exam, where as Lit is only 45%. Which is easier?? English is not something I really enjoy and I'm just looking for an easy way out. Pls recommend appropriate. Thanks

Hey! I was looking for tips for the IOC (internal oral commentary) because we are going to do ours in a few weeks ( ) and I realized there are no threads with advice for it! I was wondering if someone could give me some tips on how to structure the IOC, and how much time I should aim to spend talking about the stylistic and literary devices in the 40-line passage itself.

Just a short introduction: I am: 10th grader, German, living in England, going to do the IB next year. *Note: LangLit = abbreviation for 'Language and Literature' Lit = abbreviation for 'Literature' I already have an exact idea of all the courses I want to do in the IB (HL: Maths, Physics, English A course and SL: German A LangLit, Chemistry, Economics). The only uncertainties I have are relating to the choice of my language course choices. I am 100% sure that I will do the 'German A Language and Literature' as this is the only German course my school offers (Please don't understand me wrongly, I do appreciate the fact that they actually give us this opportunit…

So, I'm an IB Junior and I have to start working on my English IOP for The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien today. I wasn't sure where to start, so I asked my teacher and she said to start with a thesis. However, I'm awful at writing these. I've already decided on a topic and picked out a bunch of quotes/passages that I want to talk about, but I don't know how to form this into and organized presentation. The topic (or thread) I've chosen is the relationship between courage and pride in the novel. For example, one of the passages I want to use is when Norman Bowker is describing all the medals he received, but how he didn't receive the silver star. "And his [bowker'…

Hey guys, I've got my first FOA coming up this Monday and i'll be doing mine about the song 'Freedom of Speech' by Immortal technique (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCYbZZTEwiM) I'm a bit nervous since this is my first FOA that i've ever done. I've been told by my teacher not to do a 'line-by-line' analysis of the song but I should rather focus mainly on the main ideas and also to draw multiple conclusions from the themes that I find in the song. The activity that i'm planning to do is to by re-enact an interview and when I say something sensitive, the interviewer would take out a double meaning of that sentence and say something with a different meaning which I had inte…

Hi guys, writing my first written assignment soon, However, first, I have to write a rationale. As this is my first time, I'm freaking out. The topics that are available for me are "What I am" by Eminem, "Ice Ice baby" by Vanilla ice, the telephone conversation by Wole Soyinka, River of blood speech by Enoch Powell. I am leaning towards Eminem's "What I am" but I don't know what I should write about. Having seen examples from the forum, many people have opted to write diaries based on poems or works of literature. However, I don't see an applicable written task that I can write based on this. Please give in any suggestions or comments or just help me to the extent of yo…

So, i need advice on how to write an open letter. my written task is to write an open letter to Russian president putin regarding the violence in Russia against the gay community, and to ask him to remove these laws. it is an open letter, so it means it is written to the specific person but also intended for publication. it is cultural because it refers to the traditional values clashing with the more liberal values about gay people. it is supposed to be persuasive, however it must also be diplomatic. could you please help me in terms of knowing what type of language to use, and some key points for my body paragraphs?

So, I personally think I have the worst English teacher in the world. Our class "doesn't have time" to do four WT1's, we weren't given a syllabus, we have no idea what themes we are doing and it appears to take the teacher (not the class) a week to go over things most teachers would cover in a day. Most of the class spends the lessons with nothing to do, because there is not nearly enough work set. In any case, enough ranting: We have been "set" a WT1, where the teacher has given us a very specific topic and subject (Hamlet's wedding speech to Ophelia). From what I understood from the OSC course guide (the only material I have been able to find) the subject and topic of …

We're going to start reading The Great Gatsby. Our teacher has given us a research project, each two classmates have a different topic to research and they must teach the class about it. Each group will be given five minutes. The topic she's chosen center around what was happening when The Great Gatsby was written (context). She has the chosen "The 19th Amendment" for me and my classmate. Here's what she's written on the assignment: During your presentation, be sure to point out the information you consider most vital. This information will be on a quiz. Work must be MLA cited. The nineteenth amendment was made effective in 1920. Trace the history of the women's suffrage…

Hello everyone. I'm doing my EE in group 3 of Lang and Lit, which focuses more on media and it's effect rather than a thematic analysis of a book, perhaps. I was wondering if anyone has done this before, and if you could please give me some tips or good references. If you could refer me to where I can read good past papers, that would be amazing. Thank you all. Have a great summer!

Hey guys! By this friday, i hopefully need to have though of the topic of my IOP! Very Scary! I am thinking of doing mine on Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, and thinking that it wont be one of the creative options (yeah im boring ) but like an explanation or something on the reversal of gender roles and what Esquivel is saying through that. Im thinking of perhaps focusing on the reversed gender roles of the females rather than talking about it from both sides (we need to make our topic specific apparently) and talk about not just characterization but also the structure of the book etc. What have you guys done in the past/are planning on doing/or can suggest i…

HEYY, I am doing my FOA on the poem 'Morning Song' By Sylvia Plath. This is our first FOA and is based on part 1 of the course (Language in cultural context). The learning outcome I have chosen is: “How does the audience and purpose affect the structure and content of ‘Morning Song’ by Sylvia Plath?” Our teacher gave us a few guiding questions: Guiding questions a. How can language be gender-biased? b. How does language reinforce stereotypes or culturally received ideas about what different genders do, and don't do, think and don't think? c. Does language reflect our world, or does it create it? Is English really a non-sexist language because it has n…

I just moved to Iran a few months ago. Before moving here I was in a Spanish speaking country so I had Spanish Language and Literature classes, now in my school here they only offer English and Persian Lit, so my IB Coordinator told me to take up self-taught Spanish Lit. Doing this means RE-DOING basically everything in IB2 (the second year) so I was wondering whether I could take self-taught language and literature instead of just Literature? (L+L is easier to me than just Lit) I'm SL by the way.
