Hey guys, So I'm doing English A: Lit/Lang SL. So far I've done a written task in Part 2 (Language and Mass Communication), Part 3 (Literature - Texts and Contexts) and Part 4 (Literature - Critical Study). I've gone over the specification, and it seems I don't have to do more tasks according to this quote from the specification: "Students complete at least three written tasks... The content of each task must relate to a different part of the course. Therefore, at least one task must relate to part 1 or part 2, and at least one task must be based on a literary text from part 3 or part 4." But, this site: http://www.englishal...itten-tasks.htm seems to say that I have to d…

Hi, everyone! This September I'm starting IB Diploma programme and now I have to choose IB courses. I'm thinking about English A: Language and literature HL, because I like reading and writing but I'm not sure whether my English is good enough for English A course... I guess, it's for native speakers only, isn't it? Also, I would like to know what is the differences between English B HL and English A: Language and Literature HL? Because either way, I'm going to take one of these...

Here is the case, my school has a wired time table in which you would not be able to do any 3rd language if you don't choose English as your A1 language, during the DP time. I wanted to do the English A1(probably Language&Literature) because I really wanted to do Spanish Arbi.. Then again, I am not sure if I am capable of achieving a decent score on any English A1 course. I took TOEFL ibt with out any preparation 1 year ago, and it turned out to be a 91 out of 100. I had the dean of English department interviewed me.She asked me to read a monologue of Macbeth, interpret it and tell her the meaning behind, during the interview. She did not agree on the point that…

I did my oral commentary and discussion two days ago, and I still feel horrible about it. My analysis was pretty solid, but I stuttered the whole time, and it honestly sounded as though I had no idea what I was talking about. Worst of all, in my introduction, I forgot to say whether I would be using a linear or conceptual approach, and towards the end, I ran out of time and started rushing a lot, which made me miss a few important things. But the discussion was TRAGIC. On the first question, I kind of zoned out and forgot what my teacher said, so the first minute was almost completely silent except for the occasional desperate attempt to say something. There were a millio…

As part of the new course, there is a written task for the HL students: It is a critical response, answering one of 6 questions: Eg. Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text? A text we studied that i would like to analyse is Heart of Darkness, since the natives are excluded. I just don't know how to structure the essay, never done one before. Isn't there any model answer ? or similar structure essay available?

Hey guys I have recently switched my Language B (which I sucked in very much) to my second mother tongue German A L&L, however, to my surprise, I noticed that the language part of the syllabus was 100% overlapping with my English L&L course content, thus there was literally no need to revise anything from the so dreaded amount of workload I expected to catch up and work through so hardly. The stuff we cover in my German A course are just pretty much a revision of what we were doing in my English A course, thus I was even thinking of translating my Written Tasks into German and submitting them(which I ofc did NOT do). So can I ask you fellow 2013 pals who are study…

"It's a task of creative writing of 500–600 words plus a 150-word rationale, based on one of the literary texts read." It doesn't say anywhere specific but... What text types are allowed Are there any other except those? ---> article, blog, diary entry, brochure, leaflet, flyer, pamphlet, advertisement, interview (direct, reported), introduction to debate, speech, talk, presentation, news report, official report, proposal, review, set of instructions, guidelines, written correspondence.

i have to write a descriptive 400-500 word paragraph that describes a character or a setting, i'm having a hard time with thinking of ideas, i know i should find something inspiring but nothings clicking right now.. i was going to do the persepective of someone sitting in a train describing someoneelse, but my teacher used that as an example. we have to us stylistic elements, such as rhetorical devices, figurative language and sentence structure some other ideas i have are -a person with their friends sitting and watching from the outside the actions and behaviorisms of them(seeing it as a whole rather than being assimilated and absorbed in the action. - a students eloquen…

Hi! It seems some of the extremely helpful posts by Sandwich and another girl for the same were removed or relocated, could someone please direct me to those or alteast help me!? My basic problem is comprehending what a critical commentary for the unseen passage/poetry means? As in what do you write about, what do you analyse? I've seen some people give advice saying that you need to talk about what the writer is trying to put across based on the tone, I can't write 4 sides on only that can I? please link me to some files or some such resources that you know for sure are helpful at this late hour, even the files on IBS are fine. Thank you! So far I've scored a 6 and my ba…

For those who have exams in 2013, the syllabus has changed. I don't see this mentioned a lot in the discussions of this subforum. That's why the purpose of this topic is to discuss the changes that come with the new syllabus. For example, we, 2013 exam students, have to do a written assignment that consists of interactive orals, reflective statements, and an essay. These are all based on works studied in part 1. One reflective statement and one essay is to be submitted for external assessment. Of course I'm not very sure how this works in other IB schools, but we have already done two sets of interactive orals and 2 reflective statements, but I still am not very clear on …

I'm a sophomore, in the midst of IB course selections. One of my current problems i'm struggling over is as to whether I should take English Lit or Lang and Lit (both SL). Here's a bit about my current situation: I'm in an advanced English course, and earning fairly good results. My teacher says that I have a natural talent for English, and she's pushing me to take Lit. However, here's the catch: English, specifically literary analyzation, is not one of my interests. In addition, the current course i'm taking is VERY analysis based, and analyzes A LOT of literature (poems, prose, the whole lot). IB alumni from my school have said that the class i'm in right now is very si…

Hey everybody, Please can anybody help me to write an epic minimum 100 lines long and 10 words per line? Also it should also make use of Anglo-Saxom literary features such as kennings, alliterative meter, caesura and diction that reflects the setting and lifestyle of the people in the poem? The main theme is that the hero comes to fight the monster, also it should describe why they fight and who is going to win and eventually in the end the hero takes over the monster and wins.

Hi. For my English language and literature course we have to produce a written task for part 2. I understand that you have to choose some topic about 'mass media and communication' and to write about it in the form of an article, opinion column, etc. I have also been told that I need to have a certain text for reference during the task. Can anyone give me ideas on what I can base my written task one? I am totally confused....

Hello. So I'm starting my written task next week and I am undecided whether to make a comic strip or lyrics. I am really keen on making the comic strip because for me it's different from the norm and it is nothing like an essay (My teacher told us that in no way we are allowed to do essays.). However, we're only going to get 2 weeks to finish out written tasks and rationale. If I do lyrics, I might not be able to convey the message as clearly as I can with the comic strip. I'm doing my written task as a comparison between the role of Djimon Honsou in the Tempest and Amistad. Any advice?
