IA (HL) How many points would my examiner deduct in math exploration if it exceeds the page limit?

So the thing is, I did my Math exploration. I started off with a VERY specific topic and followed what I like. When I self-evalutated myself, I gave myself high marks in every criterion except "A" (because it is not concise!) The thing is, my Math exploration is 20 pages + 11 page Appendix! So how many points will the teacher deduct if EVERYTHING is fantastic except for concision? Also, do you think I should add a note to my exploration explaining why it is so long? Thanks a lot!!

Hey guys, I'm doing my Math IA and I've bumped into a rock. My topic is Music in Mathematics. What I need is a computer program that can transfer a simple musical note's frequency into a sine (and cosine) curve. I.e. you plug in a note's frequency (for example note A4, frequency 440 Hz)) and it presents you with the note's curve. Any ideas? Has anyone dealt with this before? Anything would be of help. Thank you!

How can I use Wolfram Mathematica in an IA?

I am working on my HL IA rough draft. I was wondering how long the IA is supposed to be. I'm assuming that there is not a word count but I was wondering about the page length. Also, my IA has a lot of text with math thrown in here and there. Is this acceptable? The math is a lot of permutations at the HL level but am I supposed to have a section that only includes math and then leave math out of the background and whatnot? Any help is appreciated.

Hey IBSurvival, i was wondering, how much are you planing to grind math hl problems for the exam and how much of it was necessary, maybe someone could help me out with that, because i wanted to do some problem solving weekends just for MATH HL, maybe Physics as well. + are there any online groups that do something like that? Thanks

Hi everyone, I have some ideas for my math IA, but I'm not sure which ones would work the best. 1)I would really like to explore a topic related to economics/finance, but I'm not quite sure what exactly. Could anyone give me some advice? 2)Would an exploration involving poker be okay? It seems like it has been done before, and I think there is a lot of stuff involving poker on the internet (maybe this is good, but probably not). Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? I really like math, but I just can't think of any good ideas right now... I'm open to a lot, but we haven't covered matrices or probability at all yet, so I might not be the best at these two things …

Hello All, I have to start Brainstorming on a Math Exploration I was assigned for Math HL. I need some help to think of something, it would be cool to do something about the maths in nature like the golden ratio or maybe pi, or other things like the towers of hanoi. It would be nice to do some modeling perhaps, I bought Wolfram Mathematica and maybe that could help. Any ideas are appreciated.

Hello everyone, I am currently starting my EE and have come up with some brief topics that interest me. I just want some feedback, suggestions and recommandations from you guys. So here are the topics: - The effectiveness of the use of geometry and parent functions to model the structure of the seven wonders of the world. - The effectiveness of trigonometric functions to model the sound waves of music. - Analysing, Solving, and Extending on a Mathematic Olympiad problem/or a one of the problems on the Euclid Math Contests (Waterloo Contests). So, what do you guys think? Thanks all

We're soon going to be starting our Math Options topic which is Calculus, our teacher is going to be using his own college/support material and has asked us students to get a proper textbook on options topic. are there any recommendation for any textbook which is good for this options topic? also, are there any good math workbooks of sorts that we could use for Math HL

Hey everyone, I've been struggling with some of the sequences and series work, so far the stuff I've been able to pick up how to use U1 to get U2, r (for geometric progressions) and d (for arithmetic progressions) However I don't understand how you would use other information to get U1 and thus find r/d My example is: For a convergent geometric series U2 = 8/5 and the sum of the series = 10 Show that there are two possible series and give the first term and common ratio in each case (I realize this is in the text book, but I don't understand it, can someone please show me how I would get to an answer?) Thanks in advance Andrew

Hello guys, I am kind of struggling as to how to come up with a topic for my extended essay, which will be on mathematics (BTW, I am not asking anyone to come up with one for me!) I want to know how I can get inspired to choose a topic that'll interest me (Any websites, books, resources?). Also, if I were to come up with a topic that requires me to have an understanding of a certain branch/unit of mathematics (such as probability, statistics, advanced calculus), I would have to learn and research about that before I can come up with a topic within that branch/unit right? Thanks Attached resources/websites would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I'm doing Math HL and my final exams are in May 2014. I'm wondering where you guys practiced questions from. My HL class does not like the book we have and it is certainly not enough in terms of exercises. We've covered past papers, so that is not much of an option either. My question is - how did you prepare for your exams? Do you know of any online websites that provide similar exercises to IB's that I can practice? Thanks!

Our teacher hasn't yeat explained us how to do it, but I don't want to wait for lesson, I just want to do it now so the topic is binomial expansion, in this case products of binomial expansion. (3x + 7)(x^2 - 2x)^4 I tried using pascal and other things with the techniques that I've learnt, but this one just wont come. Please help me

Hello Everyone, I am entering IB next year and am questioning on whether or not HL math is right for me. In grade 9 my mark was 96, in grade 10 I received a 94, and in grade 11 a 96. What do you think, will I do fine in HL? Also, I does anyone have any good resources to prepare me for HL next year? Thank you.

Math HL is rumoured to be one of the hardest subjects in IB. I love math, and got an A* at IGCSE level, but am worried by the prospect of higher level math at IB level. How hard is it in actuality? And what do you need to do in order to get a 6 or 7 in it?

I would like your opinion on the following textbook, if you have used it before: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pearson-Baccalaureate-Mathematics-Diploma-International/dp/0435074962 For maths HL students, are there any textbooks or combination of textbooks which helped you succeed in the course? Any recommendation on other resources on the internet would also be great. Thank you!

I'm getting particularly stuck on a convergence question from an option topic (series and differential equations - still old syllabus pre-2014). If anybody can shed light on how line 2 becomes 3, that would be much appreciated. I don't get how the cube root becomes that infinite series! The question should also be attached as well. Ah, Maths HL. This option topic/paper 3 makes me regret it all...

Start Math HL at second Year

Hey IBSurvivaler , I have a serious problem: I just started into the final round of IB, and I began thinking about applying to university. I have 4 HL right now: Eco, B&M, English B and Chem, however, as I found out, the universities where I planned to apply require Maths HL if I want to go for Economics! I'm not that bad in Math (between 6 and 7), but I did it in SL for the last year. Do you think it is possible to start Math HL now and finish it with an appropriate grade (5 or higher) if I throw myself into it?? I would drop Chem HL then!! Greetings, George

Hi! I'm working on my Math Exploration. I've done about half of it so far- I found an equation for the Tower of Hanoi solution and then proved it. However, I need to "explore further" on recurrence relations. I'm kind of stuck right now; I don't know what I can investigate in recurrence relations. Could you give me suggestions on what to do? Thanks!

I'm just in the process of finishing up my final draft for my IA type II portfolio for November, and I'm facing a bit of an issue. The other day, I googled the portfolio just to find out how others had gone about it to get a second perspective, and I found one that started the process very similar to the way I've done mine. Of course, it moved on to like writing up a program for verification and things, which I didn't. But the first three, "simple steps" and the general formula are rather similar. Now I'm worried that because this work is already on the internet, the examiners may think I plagiarised. While I do NOT want to start the portfolio again, and my final is due t…

Hey! So I had a question about my Math Exploration for my HL class. I'm doing it on the Tower of Hanoi. I've mainly talked about recursion to solve the problem of the Tower of Hanoi. I've also used mathematical induction to prove my thesis. Another concept I used was the transformation of graphs to find an expression I was looking for. Do you think that this is too simplistic for a Math HL Exploration (in terms of the mathematics used)? Thanks!

Hi.. we had to send our IAs by the time we entered IB2.. The thing is we didnt really have much guidance when doing this exploration and all i had was only samples.. i felt really lost and it was one of the hardest thing i had to do.. and now weve already sent it and i feel that it is not fair as we dont have any mocks, first draft and something like that.. im really afraid if im not doing it correctly, also, the rubrics are extremely general compared to last years.. im so worried.. should i ask for the teachers to check? and re-done?

Hello everyone. I wanted a bit of help. I have been doing a lot of research about the Math Exploration on the internet and here on IBsurvival. I was planning to do my exploration on the Fibonacci series and its relationship with the Golden ratio and the Pascal's Triangle. I read a lot of relationships but I'm clueless as to what to do in the exploration. A lot of data is there on the internet, how can I explore? I would love it if someone could help! Thank you!

Hi Everybody I'm sure a lot of members and I wish for a list of important calculus "tricks" to use in the exam. These can range from the thought process one should go through when seeing a calculus question, important "shortcuts" we should be able to identify, common questions in the papers, etc. Everyone (especially you budding math geniuses), please do contribute! Hopefully we can create a good resource for students to refer to.

My school offers Further Mathematics as a Self-Taught subject. I intend to pursue a Math degree in college, for which I need both Math HL and Further Math HL. I''m already taking Math HL. It's hard, but manageable. Do you recommend that I take Further Math as Self-Taught too. Is it at all possible, especially with the work-load the IB already sets?

Hi, I was wondering about which book I should choose for my Math HL Calculus option? My exam is May 2014, so it's the new curriculum. So far I think I want to buy the Cambridge book, since the book from Oxford University Press that we currently use for Math Hl Core is horrible when it comes to mistakes, even though it's good in the way it explains math. What are your opinions about Oxford and Cambridge University Press, which one's the best?

Hi, I was going to this problem : Find the set of values of x for which |0.1x 2 − 2 x + 3| < log10 x And in the markschme it says "Attempting to solve 0.1x 2 − 2 x + 3 = log10 x numerically or graphically. x = 1.52, 1.79 x = 17.6, 19.1 (1.52 < x < 1.79) ∪ (17.6 < x < 19.1) " I want to know how i can solve in graphically? Hello, I've got a question concerning paper 2. The point is that I don't know what I am actually supposed to write while using GDC. 1. whenever I use GDC and write the outcome (or graph or whatever) in the paper, am I supposed to write something like "from GDC" or is it unnecessary? My teacher always told us to write it but I didn't notice any similar comments in marks schemes. 2. One thing is that I don't want to waste time but the other - I don't know what is the minimum I should write to achieve a point, for instance: let there be a binomial distribution X~Bin(7,0.25) when I am supposed to find P(X=<2), should I elaborate that this is equal to P(X=0)+P(X=1)+P(X=2) a…
