I have a questiong about planes intersecting. I have two questions from earlier exams that I don't really understand how to solve. The questions I am wondering about are question 11(a), (b) and © on the M11/5/MATHL/HP2/ENG/TZ1/XX paper, and question 7(b) on the M09/5/MATHL/HP2/ENG/TZ1/XX paper. The questions are about lines intersecting at either points or lines when there is a variable (a) in the plane equation. Example 7(a): Plane 1: x+y+2z=2 Plane 2: 2x-y+3z=2 Plane 3: 5x-y+az=5 Find the value of a for which the planes do not meet at a unique point. When I look at the markscheme for help they seem to be using matrices, but since I am a May 2014 student I have no…

Hi! I'm having trouble with an integration problem. 2π × integral between 0 and 6 of (0.02x^3-0.39x^2+1.77x+0.18) × (sqrt(0.0036x^4-0.0936x^3+0.8208x^2-2.7612x+4.1329)) dx Does anyone know how to solve it or have any suggestions? Thanks heaps!

Hey Everyone! Since some time I've been wondering whether first-order differential equations are required from us on Math HL exam this May. I came across past exam questions which either explicitly stated "solve differential equation..." or required it in the method, such as the one which I attached to this post. I looked through the new syllabus and solving differential equations is not stated there in the "calculus" section. Moreover, in my Math book (Pearson HL Mathematics) the chapter "16.9 Differential equations" is marked as "optional". However, my Math teacher said that we may get such questions on our exam. I must say that I didn't really practice solving th…

So for my hw...i have the question boats a position is given by x(t)=3-t, y(t)=2t-4 where the distance units are kilometers and the time units are hours. boats B's position is x(t)=4-3t, y(t)=3-2t then i found part a and b...then for part c it asks "what is the angle between the paths of the boats?'' but now i am stuck...i plugged it into the cosine equation cosx=(AdotB)/(A)(B) (() is absolute value) but then i got 83~~~....then i checked the answer and it was 97~~ and i saw if i subtract 180 form 83 you get the answer..but why??? or am i just doing it wrong??? then i need to find what time the boats are closest to each other HELP!!!

Hey guys, I have to choose a topic for my IA soon, and I was just wondering how "hard" does the topic have to be. Because I saw some topics like fractals and centroids, but not sure how to choose? Any advice would be helpful.

Hello, I am stuck on this problem right here: Find the first and second derivative of: x(t) = KC/(C + e-rt), where K, C and r are constants. Any idea on how you would do this? Is there some trick that I need to learn to be able to do this, or am I just looking at it the wrong way. Thanks in advance, Atham EDIT: Apparently the second deriv. simplifies down to -rt = ln C. I am not so sure though.

Hello I have been looking for topics for my Maths IA, and I plan on doing it during the Easter holidays to get it over with. I want to study medicine, and thus I wanted to choose a topic that would somehow be part of that, to show personal engagement. I looked at disease spread and found the SIR model. It involves calculus, but I am afraid that it is not indepth enough. What I was looking to do is to try to show how I derived the SIR model, then to use real data and try to create a model and compare with the real life data (although I am not sure where I could find the data for a particular disease). I also wanted to include herd immunity and how changing certain fa…

Hey guys! We've recently started studying the option, and I have some troubles understanding how to find the order of the element in a group. Soo here's the question: The binary operator * is defined for a, b being real numbers by a * b = a + b – ab. The domain of * is now reduced to S = {0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and the arithmetic is carried out modulo 7. Determine the order of each element in S. Could anyone shed some light on this? Thanks! Edit: I think I've got it, but just in case? Is the first order-element the element itself, or when the operation is applied only once? I'm going with the first (the element), but if anyone could clarify...

Hi everyone, this is my first time writing in IBSurvival. I'm currently in second year of IB, taking the November 2015 exam. I did my HL maths exploration on geometry, specifically on various properties of ellipse and applying it to real life situation, but I just got my first draft for my maths exploration back, and I got 10/20................................................... even though I used really complex and rigorous mathematics. My teacher told me I didn't get mark because I didn't explain my maths clearly but more importantly, I didn't get any mark for personal engagement, and I was ofc like what the heck.......................... and he said if I can't co…

Hey guys, so in my school we started the options book finally (Very late. I know.) and I've been able to do a lot of these questions without any problem but these 2 questions in this book are really annoying. I tried to solve them multiple times and I still cant figure it out. I asked my math teacher if he could solve it and after he tried it a few times, he failed and said that there was probably a printing error but i don't think it is. Both these questions look like that have a proper answer but i just dont know how to get to it. Can someone please help me? The questions are on page 29 chapter 1 - Limits of sequences and functions in the Cambridge Mathematics Higher le…

So my teacher screwed me over by not giving me proper corrections and my math exploration ended up being too simple and quite bad. I am pretty certain that I am going to fail it, and at worse I will get an 7 on it (at best around 12). Could I still get a 5 in my final grade? My grades have been a consistent 5/4-5/6 in practice exams.

Hi, I am almost done with my final draft for the Math HL IA. It's just, I still haven't really used any sources. My project is on scrabble. It aims to find the probability of getting a bingo at the start of a game. I assume I should reference Scrabble as a game in my sources for the entire project, but honestly other than that, everything is my original idea. When I put the project through plagiarism checkers like turn-it-in and Viper it turns up some things (<4%) that are just random excerpts from sentences. Should I find quotes and sources that fit in my project or is it okay to not have a bibliography if all ideas are original?

Hi everyone, I am currently in my first year of IB and I took HL because my teacher recommended HL course to me, looking at my grade and attitude in class during GCSE course. However, for all of my tests so far (Unit tests), I am failing to get the marks that I want. I got 60 % for my first test, but the marks dropped all the way to 50 % and 30 % for the next two. I have done my mid year exam recently and I don't think I did a great job on that as well because I could not do three big marker questions. I was really disappointed on how I did because this time, I did more revision, including past papers and revision questions that my teacher gave us. I am consideri…

Greetings, I know I am a little too late for this but I spent the last few weeks researching and looking for topics for my Exploration, and I eventually settled on "Finding the Surface Area of an Egg". I showed it to my teacher and he told me that he is unsure about the topic and is afraid that I might be accused of plagiarism because I got the equation I am planning to use from here: http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/407310/how-can-i-find-the-surface-area-of-a-normal-chicken-egg. I have my mock paper 2 for maths tomorrow (and i know the paper we are going to be tested on is from M14TZ1 lol). I looked at some past papers and GDC seemed really useful to calculate sums. So to save time can I skip expanding some of the first numbers of a series and type everything in the calculator straight away? Do i need to mention that "I used GDC" to get a (M1) point?

Hi there, I really need some help on developing my IA. I'm currently investigating flexagons but I cannot proceed beyond investigating its physical properties (finding hidden faces and how to get them). The thing is, I don't know what calculations I can do in my investigation. I was thinking that maybe it can be connected to some problem out of the geometry field but I don't know what. So far, it looks like having mostly research on paper. rather than an investigation. Any ideas? Please help, thanks.

Hi, I am currently in term 2 of IB year 1. I am doing pretty well in all my subjects scoring 6's and 7's. However there is HL Maths which I am struggling in A LOT. My school had early entry GCSE's offers, so I had finished my maths GCSE's last year in January - 6 months earlier than the usual lot. I scored a 95% and got an A*. Before finalising my IB choices, I went on a college major hunt and juggled between 1. Computer Science and 2.Biochemistry. I am interested in going into medical field but with a technological approach. Hence I am still not sure which would be the ideal major especially in terms of the job market. To make sure that I have my options open, I …

(b) The function f is defined by f (x) = x2 + 4 cos x for 0 < x < π. (i) By considering the graphs of y = x and y = 2 sin x, show that f (x) has only one stationary point, and explain why this stationary point is between pi/2 and π. (ii) Find f ″(x) and hence prove that the stationary point is a minimum. (iii) Find the coordinates of the point of inflection on the graph of y = f (x). (iv) Sketch the graph of y = f (x), clearly labelling the stationary point and the point of inflection. I have found the answer, but im not sure whether its right.

Soo here is the question: A girl chooses 2 letters at random from these 7: A, D, E, K, O,Q, S. What is the probability that one is a vowel and the other is the letter D? I tried writing all the combinations, and then said that there are 7 which have both D and a vowel, out of possible 42, which gives 1/6, but this is not in agreement with the given solution (1/14). Any help will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
