Hi, I am interested in finding convenient and efficient ways to improve my math skills. I was wondering if there are those who are keen on or have participated in online study groups for Math HL and/or Further Maths. Looking for: Discussion over [skype] Possible video/study lesson creation (youtube channel?) Those interested in further maths topics I think it would be great to collaborate on constructing worksheets for both courses using software packages such as Maple. If anyone else is interested in this sort of thing please let me know.

Hi, I was wondering how to simplify this function that is inputted in Wolfram Alpha: http://www.wolframal...29%29%2Fn%29%29 I am trying to get from the inputted function to the 2sin[(x-y)pi/n] form. What steps do I take to get there? EDIT: Nevermind, I got the answer. All I needed to do was use double angle formula lol

So I really don't know if I can handle HL maths. I've been told I'm one of the only kids in my class that would actually be able to do HL maths, but that I would still struggle with it as I wasn't in the highest math class. I got an A* in the IGCSE mocks, and will definitely get an A* in the finals. I find math at IGCSE very easy and seldom study anything. BUT I've been told that even so, IB math is a huge step up. Please keep in mind that I am doing the regular IGCSE Maths course, not the "Additional Maths". So I'm not doing anything like logarithms and calculus. Will I have to know these things prior to math HL? Does it require a lot of presumed knowledge? Please advi…

So, I really need an 7 in Hl math as part of my conditional offer. The hard thing about HL math when I compare it to HL physics or chemistry, is that I can never really secure a 7. I mean in physics or chem, if you study enough and memorize the formulas and stuff you are pretty certain to achieve a high grade, not so for math. I was studying for the past month, doing past papers, reviewing the syllabus, and I always end up with a 6 max. Any tips or suggestions on how are you planning to get a 7 in math? Thanks

I have honestly felt this gloom for a long time whilst partaking in my Maths HL lessons. I just hate it. My sixth form is in the second year of IB and whilst my other subjects are fine with being taught (content, help, homework etc) my Math teacher is the definition of terrible. Rarely gives homework, rushes through the course but claim we're working ahead, doesn't go by the syllabus...I'm mortified. I feel like I have to self-teach myself and for it to be Maths...I can't do that. Even though my initial thought was that I was naturally gifted in Maths I literally feel bad in EVERY lesson. I realised that I have to love the subject and quite frankly it makes me feel …

Currently I am a level 4 in HL Math though improving to be a level 5 soon. However I just wanted to ask whether a 4 in HL Math is as bad as the number says or is it average for HL Math? Also what would be the equivalent for a level 4 in SL Math? Would I get accepted into Canadian universities with a level 4?

Kaaaay so the IBO website says Further Maths is becoming a higher level course in 2012, with first examinations in 2014, but so far I haven't been able to find a lot of information about the course. I'm a huuuuge math nerd, took math and additional math in my IGCSEs with 99 in both, and I start IB this fall Also, I don't want to take 7 subjects, and I'm taking 2 sciences, so I've been looking for a way to take further math without math HL- is that allowed? Don't bother telling me I'm going to drown or that IGCSE is nothing compared to IB; I already know. Thanks so much for helpingg

Hi, Since I've recently switched to my 3rd math teacher in the course of my IB (!), my entire class is lagging behind quite a bit on the option. I've started looking through some past papers and its going surprisingly well so far, but anyway: I've come across a question from the 2008 paper: Now my teacher was nice enough to let me take a look at the mark scheme which is along the lines of: ∛(n+1)-n=n(∛(1+1/n3)-1) =n(1+1/3n3-1/9n6+5/81n9-...-1) First question is how they got to this last part? Going on from here, they used v=1/n2 as the "auxillary series". Could someone please explain what this means and what exactly its used for? I still have problems with some o…

This week is the second mock session of my IB diploma and well...maths. I used to be great at maths but since recently I've been doing worse and worse. I obviously want to do better (a 6 is what I am aiming for in 2013) but I have no clue where to start studying. Our teacher has no plan for teaching us and simply walks into class, starts a new topic without even saying what it is and then we are supposed to do exercises..The books we use are the 'Cambridge Mathematics for the IB Diploma' ones by Hugh Neil and Douglas Quadling. I hate them since I cannot understand ANY of the explanations given. In fact, they confuse me more. So badly organized, like my teacher. How should…

So I was doing my math IA, and I had some problems with solving the equations (3x3 systems of equations). If my friend explained how to solve them and so we use the same algebraic method, could this be considered as plagiarism? Because everything else is different, only these methods are the same, but comeon, there are not, like, million methods to solve them... What do you guys think? I am freaking about this right now, as I don't know what to do, I really don't want to plagiarise anything whatsoever. Cheers.

Topics about non euclidean geometry in math exploration?

So I have to do this math exploration, where I do research and find out something. I'm interested in the non-euclidean geometry and would like to write about that. However, I don't know exactly how to link that to a research question and actually come up with results. The exploration should be about 5-6 pages and I currently go to 11th grade. Can anybody come up with topics related to non-euclidean geometry, where a lot of mathematics is applied and I can investigate something? Thank you. Just some basic ideas, maybe?

Hey guys, Still not started my IB had a few questions about math portfolios in general. 1) Do you get topics in class and then work on them at home? 2) Are portfolios like the investigations in the MYP/Similar course? 3) How do you submit portfolios? Handwritten or as a soft copy? and how do you type up all the math? I also want to do a Math EE so that last question is pretty important thanks

In HL paper 3, we are allowed to use the calculator Therefore I wrote down the process of solving the problem using calculator, including the tool used, parameters and explanation But my teachers says it is not the same way as the MS therefore did not reward me marks. I am 100% sure that my answers are accurate, as my answers match the ones on MS I wonder, do we have to do the exactly same way as the MS (I chose stat, usually they have those calculations which can be simply done using Z-intevals) As on the MS #8 states that correct methods other than the one given on MS should also be awarded. thx

The question is as follows from Chapter 4E Question 5 in the HL book: The speed V, of a chemical reaction is given by V=(V0)(20.1t) where t is the temperature in oC. Find the temperature at which the speed is three times as fast as it was at 0oC. I'm just having trouble starting off. I'm fine with the method for logarithms and such. How would you tackle this question and ones like this (where the original value is a variable) and please provide method so I can logically think these through on examinations.

My first question in your school who decides to do the portfolio. For example does the teacher gives you the two portfolios and the class decides which one to do or he decides on his own. Also I found out that there are portfolios for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 So in total we can have a choice of 4 right. Or we have two only. I mean if he we did the Type II from 2011-2012. So are we going to do it from 2012-2013 or we can do it from the same one. Thanks

Hello everyone, I am doing the second portfolio and I was almost finished (or so I thought) when I noticed a pattern. When I plotted the distance between A and B in a run as a function of the time running, I found that there seemed to be a pattern... I have an equation in the form y=ax^2+bx+c, where I already have the value of c (Original distance between the two?) I am not looking for answers or anything the like, but merely wondering if anyone had done if and if so, if they could give me a hint as to which direction I should pursue... Thanks beforehand

I'm currently in the Pre-diploma year and am trying to get into the Math higher course, which my school has a tendency not to give most of the time. Therefore i am wondering if someone has some helpful comments or maybe som links to youtube or anything that could help with getting ahead in mathematics so the school might consider giving it to me. ( I have heard from the IB coordinator at my school that they do give the course if a student can pass a certain entrance test) So does anyone for example have any links to a summary of how sigma and matrices are used?

For whatever reason, I thought that I could do the majority of my Type II portfolio in one night. This ended up being unsuccessful - I finished, but after proofreading thoroughly this morning, I realized I made an arithmetic error in one of the tasks, and I did not have time to interpret the accuracy or consider the fit of my model. Looking at the rubric, I'm predicting a horrific score of 11/20. What would an 11/20 approximate to on the IB scale (1-7)? Would this score prevent me from achieving a 7 on the IB exam regardless of my performance on the second portfolio?

Hey, I'm in my second year IB Math HL. I find the course relatively challenging and require lots of self-studying. However, even though I did lots of questions on the textbook, whenever there is a test, I usually dont get the mark that I want(7). It's really disappointing to me cause I only can get a 6. I feel the problem is the difficulty of the questions in the Math HL textbook is way easier compared to the questions on the test. Any suggestion that how I can improve my grade from a 6 to 7. Right now in our math class, we're learning about Integration. Thank You!

My first post I just did two of the IB Math exams at HL and quite frankly they were not so bad. However I was wondering if it is possible to get 100% on portfolios because I have to have a back up in case the exams weren't as good as I thought/think. I've got 36/40 in total for both portfolios. But I don't know if my Math HL teacher was being lenient or not! Do any of you guys know if you can actually got a really high score or even 100% after being marked by IBO? They always seem quite happy to downgrade but never really upgrade. :/ Thanks

An employee is driving his car back and forth to his job using the same road. Hey guys. So i'm in IB math hl and we had to decide our options. Majority of the class took Stats and prob. I wanted to do discrete mathematics but my teacher said she's not gonna let any one do any option but stats or series & d.e. So i was hoping that you guys could give me a clear idea of what all the options are like. Perhaps share what option you are doing and how you are finding it. Personally, i find stats really crappy. Anyway, tell me what you all think. Also is it possible for someone to do an option themselves if the teacher is not ready to teach it?

So, we are given 9 tasks and are supposed to do them by answering them in an essay-ish text. In other words, we shouldn't write "Task 1", then copy the task and answer it, then "task 2", but it all should be coherent, flowing and linked to each other. And I'm having problems in the introduction already...I don't really know how to formulate the intro. The first task is this: The sequence of numbers{a_n} is defined by a_1=1*1!, a_2=2*2!, a_3=3*3!, ... Find the nth term of the sequence. My intro looks kind of like "We are given a sequence of numbers {a_n) which is defined by blablabla and as wee can see, the nth tern is a_n=n*n!" But I am just not satisfied with it, …

Hello , Well I'm currently in Math HL we're doing 3D Planes and lines in space, with questions like x, y, z, finding acute angles, whether they're perpendicular/parallel/coplanar etc... This is still my first year of IB and so far the hardest topic I've come across, I'm finding it really hard to understand (the 2D planes with just x and y are okay, mainly 3D I find difficult). So my question is, in your experienced opinions, is this chapter one of the hardest? Or is it the horrible truth that if I'm struggling with this /simple/ chapter I've got a very bleak future in Math HL? Also I get pretty confuse when I look at the Admission Requirements for most Universities the…

I am starting IBDP next year and I am taking Mathematics on the Higher Level. My Maths background is quite strong, but I do not think that it is strong enough for Higher Level. I want to prepare for it during the summer,so I want to ask you - what should I revise, what should be known before entering this course, actually anything that would help me to prepare for it would be appreciated. Thank you.
