Hello all, I'm starting the IB soon and need a calculator for it. I've been considering the HP Prime which as far as I know is banned but under review. Would I be allowed to use it for the course and then borrow a ti 84 for the exam, or would I not/be better off not doing so to familiarise myself with the calculator? I expect that it will be permitted for the exams, but there's always that small chance... Thanks, Joseph

Multiplying two binomials and forming conjectures (induction) (URGENT)

Hey Guys, I have a Math test tomorrow so I need some help REAL quick. When I was practicing binomials, I came there are several questions for finding the general term like (x-1)3((1/x) + x)6 Find the coefficient of x-3 in the expansion. Our teacher told us that we have to expand both of the expressions manually and then multiply them to get the coefficient, but I refuse to believe that because that will take a lot of time and space and increase the probability of numbers as well. If anyone has a shorter way, please share. On to induction, in our book there is this section called "Forming conjectures" in the induction chapter which explains how to find the nth term …

In the HL Math program at my school, rather than the teacher deciding on one option for the class, we each get to select our own. I took AP Calculus BC last year and got a 5 on the exam, but I'm stuck between Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. I was going to pick Calculus, but a friend of mine in Further Math said that Discrete Mathematics was extremely interesting, and my math teacher said that it has applications with technology. If I'm looking to go to a STEM school to work with computers and electronics, would it be more beneficial for me to reinforce the Calculus I already know (and make my life a bit easier this year), or to learn Discrete Mathematics?

Hi, I'm preparing for the Math IB HL and I came through this topic (Shell method to find volumes of revolution of solids when disk/washer method becomes very complex and or fails) which is explained in some books while not in others. Is it really among the official curriculum of the IB HL?. Also is it possible to subscribe to some mailing list to send up updates about what will happen in the future regarding any official inclusions/exclusions of Math IB HL (and also SL in case I'll think about switching). Thanks all

i see similar questions come up quite often: The random variable X follows a poisson distribution. Given that P(X<=1) = 0.2, find the mean of the distribution. <= is less than or equal to. so i try to rearrange and i get to : e^-m (1+m) = 0.2 I dont know what to do next, anyone know ? Thanks! -GOD

I would like to know how to prove the following statement by the principle of mathematical induction, it is the last exercise of the Mathematical Induction chapter of the Haese HL Math 3rd edition book: "The nth root of n! is less or equal to (n+1)/2, given any possitive integer n"

Hi everyone. For my math IA, I have to use some kind of graph making software to make the graph of arctan (x/2) , then rotate it around the x axis. Does anyone know a program that can do this? If not, I guess I'll have to draw it by hand...

Hi! I would just like to ask about opinions on an IA topic I have formulated. I am considering doing my math IA on the topic "Developing a system using Game Theory to analyse and make decisions in fencing." So far I have come up with various ways to tackle this IA but I would like to hear second (and more) opinions. What do you think of the topic? Is it too broad or too narrow and does it have enough content to be a Math HL IA? Thanks! owj

Hi fellow IBers and grads! I'm doing my EE in mathematics. I have a few problems regarding formatting. I did my EE according to the typical math journal format, and I found it more elegant not to double space the text ....my quesiton is: is it alright if we dont use double spacing? Also, the criteria says, it is importnat to remember that it is an essay that is eing written, not a research paper for a journal of advanced mathematics. Can someone help elaborate? I appreciate your help

I am just wondering if i can use hypergeometric distribution in a certain way. Lets say there are 10 balls in a basket: 5 blue, 3 green, 2 red. I am going to pick out 4, and i want to find the probability of picking out 2 reds, 1 green and 1 blue, in any order. So it could be RGRB, or BRRG, etc. Could i find the probability by first finding the probability of getting 2 reds out of 4 picks using hypergeometric distribution, then 1 green out of 4, and then 1 blue out of 4. Then i would add the probabilities together? It would be great if anyone could help me out, thanks!

Lets say you are playing poker playing against 2 other people. Everyone gets 2 cards first and your 2 cards are a pair of X's. 5 more cards are going to come in the middle, and I want to find the probability of getting a full house. would you agree that these are the possible combinations of 5 cards?: YYYKM XYYKM YYYKK XYYKK XYYYK Where X is the rank of card that i have a pair of in my hand, Y, K and M is any other rank. from each of those combinations i find the amount of combinations possible. eg: for XYYKM i would do 13C1 x 2C1 x 12C1 x 4C2 x 11C2 x 4C1 x 4C1 = 1,647,360 possible combinations And when i add all of them up, i would get 1,857,…

Hello I'm going to be starting IB in about a month and a half and I'm facing a dilemma on whether I should take Math HL or stick to Math SL. I've taken Bio, Chem and Psychology as my HLs and I'm planning on doing a degree in either Psychology, Biomed or Biotech. Will it be beneficial if I take Math HL or is it okay if I stick to SL? Also, my grades for Math have been average, around 70 - 80%. Please help me make a choice Thank you.

Hi, I know this question has already been asked but there was only one person who responded so I wanted to ask it again. Anyway, I was thinking to do Gambler's Fallacy, I've just written rationale and introduction, however I can not think how to start it later on and somehow I think that this topic is not suitable for HL. So I wanna know what you guys are thinking about that. I am in a rush so I'm waiting your helps. Thanks in advance.

For my IA i want to do about the probabilities of poker. I didn't do the topic in class about combinations and permutations, but i am slowly learning it myself. Just stuck on something: Lets say 3 people are playing poker, and they all get 2 cards each at the start of the game. So there are 46 cards left, 5 of which will come in the middle. knowing that i have a pair in my hand ( a pair of 2 for example), how can i find the probability of the five cards in the middle to have another card of the same rank (e.g. another 2), to make a triple, or even to make 4-of-a-kind. So i would start with 46C5 to find the number of combinations possible for the 5 cards i…

Hello guys, I am trying to find a topic for my internal assessment and since i want to study computer science I was thinking of doing something relevant to CS. One thing that i have in mind is boolean algebra but I am not sure whether this is suitable for a math HL IA topic. Also, except from finding the topic I need to find what exactly i will be investigating and that's the hard part since i need to find something which can be covered in the limited number of pages I can write for my IA. If you can give me your opinion or guide me on how to find a specific topic it would be more than helpful !I have a 7 in Math so I guess I can handle slightly more difficult topics.…

My final grade from this year was a 5. But, I need a 7 and soon. I'm starting a study group online on G+ over the Summer. Possibly an hour a week. I already have a few people signed up from my school but still, the more the merrier. Productively using the last Summer before school ends could make your year. Tell me if you're interested. With the internet, borders really aren't barriers. Cheers!

Hi all, I had a thread about a possible exploration idea, but I scrapped that idea, as I was afraid I might venture too deeply into economics, which is something I do not want to happen since this is a math exploration. I have always wanted to utilize calculus in my IA, and just find rates or something, but I am having so much trouble just looking for a real-life situation that I can use to model a function or anything. I am DESPERATE to have an IA topic by the end of next week, and I am willing to just list down all of my ideas and hopefully someone has a suggestion as to how I can expand on an idea? (I'm not sure if this is really allowed on this forum, so if I am b…

Hey everyone I'm trying to build up a good foundation for Math HL using Khan Academy. I was wondering if anyone knew which topics I should build up or maximise in order to be decently prepared for the course? Specifically I'm wondering if I should master Algebra II as well as Algebra I? Is pre-calculus enough or do I need to touch some topics under differential calculus as well? Do I need to cover some amount of all 8 topics under high school math? I believe the system used in KA is very similar to that of the American high school system, which I'm not at all familiar with. So any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello guys. So I'm just about to finish IB1 and throughout the whole year I had a very bad teacher which demotivated me a lot, hence I was hardly putting effort on it. Now, as the end of year one is approaching, he gave me a predicted 4, which is more or less the average I got in the latest tests/exams. I was wondering if it is worthy to spend my summer working hard on Math to increase my predicted grade which I will get in late November of next year? I am aiming for a 6 or a 7. If during the summer I can become good enough to get 7s in all the tests between September and November and show good effort, will my teacher predict me a grade as high as a 6 or a 7 consideri…

Hello guys, I was just wondering if it is possible for one for improve by 2 grade points by november of this year? I am applying to US universities in the fall, and I need at least a 5, preferably 6, in math HL. The problem is, I am getting a 4. I have been studying and doing many practice problems, and I actually understand concepts, but when tests come, I usually have a freakout because my teacher is really precise about the timing (like if the test is 23 marks, it is 23 minutes, no more, no less), and my mind blanks and I can't seem to do the questions. Also, most of the time, the IB questions are actually really challenging, and I had difficulty applying the concepts…
