Hello, This year I'll be in IB 2 . Last year , I started my IB at the seconde semester , I was studying a differnet curriculum at the first semester. So I missed approximately the first the first 9 units .... and I wasn't concentrating much at the next three units I attended . I want to recap what I have missed , and I'm asking you for a method I should follow to survive (I'm a well performing student). Thank you.

Hi, I'm stuck on this question: Prove by mathematical induction that if y = x^n, then dy/dx= = nx^n-1. You may assume the product rule of differentiation. I don't know where to start, and I don't know how to prove something by induction if it is not a series question. You can also find the question in the HL maths textbook pg 620 review set 20B Q11. For your reference, the product rule is: where y=uv, dy/dx = u(dv/dx) + v(du/dx) Thanks for all of your help!

I'm just curious on what grade and score you got or are hoping to get for Math HL. Also, what was your average tests results and how much time you spend studying on math per week?

Hey, I want to buy my graphing calculator and I just can't choose. I am surfing the net for it, trying too see the differences, but it is quite hard because of all of the unknown concepts, etc. So,I guess that maybe people from IB survival might be able to tell the differences in the human language I am looking at Ti-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver edition and the only thing that is different is Flash ROM and Clock. Flash ROM is very different(480KB &1.5MB). Does it really makes a difference? Also, even though that most of my class will probably have Ti-84/TI-84+, I am looking at those TI-Nspire calculators and they are way better(at least while in statistics), but I …

I am too ****ed and tired for this thing now. Doing it since months and I honestly cant understand this stupid HL. I should have taken those other fake classes like bio.. at least i could have passed by drawing a flower I got a 6 in my Math HL IA including the type I and II portfolio (30/40) Do you think that I can possibly get a 3 in math with: 1. The two amazing portfolios I have 2. A bad paper 1 and a mediocre paper 2 3. Good paper 3 I think that am gonna fail paper 2, thats for sure but i could just pass paper 1 and i think that i can do a satisfactory job in paper 3. GUYS, sorry for bothering you, but WILL I PASS MATH HL with the above possibilities? exam in 4 days…

Ok so i have my IB1 Final Exam coming up in a few days, and ive been studying the math syllabus up to calculus cause thats as far as were gonna be tested, the thing is studying concepts isnt the hard part, its just every time i study a topic extensively do some practice problems and feel ready.... i open the past paper to tackle a problem and its just too much of a mind****! . its like the questions are on a higher plane of thought completely... i know its supposed to be hard - its math higher, your expected to do hard **** and get it right - but every single time i go back and study more i come back to the past paper and i really feel like its a struggle to do the quest…

Can anybody tell me how to find the zeros of a cubic function on a graphing calculator? Example: x^3+3x^2+2x+8 I thought I knew how to do it but the problem I'm having is that my graph of this function does not look like a regular cubic function. It only passes through the x-axis once! Can anybody help me?! Please please please?!?!?!

Hi, I'm currently in Math SL but find it very unstimulating or challenging. I want to self teach myself math HL(my exams are next year, May 2012), is this recommended? I looked at the Core syllabus and I know about 85% of it, and I know about 40% for the series and Differential equations Option. Also, are the internal assessments different by much in Math SL and math HL? Thanks.

Guys - I'm about to start the IB, and am torn between maths SL and HL. I do like maths, a lot, but don't want it to drag my total marks down. i.e. I don't know how epically I'm going to fail. If I worked hard on SL, I'd probably get a 6 or 7. But if I passed HL, I'd receive 2 bonus ranks for uni entry, which is worth more than IB points. Is struggling through 2 years of HL worth the two points? What are the benefits of HL? Thank you ;D

There've been plenty of topics about P3, so I just wonder which options are most often chosen for this exam? Which one you think is the easiest and which the hardest? I'm taking Sets, relations and groups. It was a choice of my math teacher, and, to be honest, I find it rather weird.

This may sound like a silly question, but is there any restriction on use of GDC during paper 3, depending on the topic? Because I'm doing topic 9, but it doesn't seem like a topic that really requires much calculator use, so far I've only encountered one past paper question where a GDC might be useful. Will they penalize if I use my GDC to solve specific questions or is it like in Paper 2, where I would need to sketch the graph in order to receive marks for my answer? Thanks Ayelet

Hey all, I'm one of the 2011 may exam takers! Anyways, I wanted to ask you all how to go about revision for the Stats and Probability option topic (paper 3 overall). My issue is that I can manage paper 1 and paper 2 (despite my reluctance to use my calculator, usually what brings me down >_>) but when it comes to paper 3, I turn into a mess. I've been practicing stats questions (literally grinding) and I'm probably naturally bad at Stats and Prob in general but I just CAN'T get many questions in paper 3 right!! Without time limit, it takes me an hour just to get through question 1. So I'd really appreciate it if you all could give me any tips for paper 3, maybe som…

At the moment I have this one little problem that is currently screwing my grade up in HL maths. I am hopeless with accuracy. Let me explain. I am pretty good at maths. Even with the huge syllabus, I find most of it easy to remember and understand. With Paper 2 practices, I average about 90% usually and this is not a problem as long as I have my calculator. It is when I don't have my calculator things get bad. I just got my exam back that I did end of last year and I got 59% on it. However, every single mark I lost on it but 2 was due to stupid little error like saying 2+4=8 or 32=6. In fact there was only 2 question on the whole exam which I got full marks for, and ever…

Hi So, i have a maths IA that is due this wednesday, and my classmates and me are struggling to do this. This is my second IA that i have done, and the one i did previously is incredibly difficult. I scored a 3 in it, and i am not planning for another one. So i need help with this one really bad. Firstly, the format of the IA is very confusing. This is what i think i do, 1) Aim, what is the aim about and how i will be doing it. 2)The parameters and variables 3) Screen shots of the tables and graph i have made and showing how i went about doing it. 4)Showing how i had derived a formula using that 5) Showing it using another situation 6) How this can be improved. So, it mi…

I'm not sure how to do proofs for these questions. 1. lim x to 3 ((x^2+x-12)/(x-3)) = 7 2. lim x to a ( c ) = c 3. lim x to 0 (x^3) = 0 4. lim x to 9- (4th root of 9-x) = 0 5. lim x to 3 (x^2+x-4) = 8 *yes for number 4 it is supposed to be 9- (or 9 coming from the left) Thank you!!

Recently, I got 45 percent in my first math test for math HL, and I'm just wondering if I keep getting around the 50-60 percentage area, will I get at least a 3 for the subject. I am worrying a lot about failing Math HL and then not getting the IB Diploma. Also, does the grade (1-7) depend on discussion in class, because I never get involved, or is it just IA and EA's.

I can't find anything related to this particular IA anywhere on the web. This portfolio is related to analyzing tide forecasts and coming up with sinusoidal functions. I'm stuck on the first part. We are provided with low and high tide data for four days, and we need to estimate a sinusoidal function of the form: f(t) = sin(B1t) + (B2t) I don't understand how I am supposed to make a function of that form. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

This is regarding a HL maths portfolio. I am currently doing patterns in linear equations and I was wondering if a contents page should be included. Now people here may say that you don't HAVE to in order to score well. However, regarding achieving a 20/20, should you include a contents page? If so, any tips on how the format of the page should be?

Okay so the big problem follows: Last year when I was starting the IB programme I had some family situations that were stopping me from staying on track in maths in school. They all got resolved 1 month ago, but the problem is that I am now left with 2 months to pass Mathematics HL in the May exams. Failure is not an option of course. I would like to ask all of you to help me make a plan of studying so I can make at least a good 4 on this exam (5 would be of course great). Every suggestion, tip or hint would be GREATLY appreciated

When Adam and Ben play against each other in tournaments outside the club, their point-winning probabilities remain the same (2/3 and 1/3 respectively), but the rules now require that players win by 2 points and therefore, that games may in theory be infinitely long Show that although Adam's point odds agains Ben are 2:1, his game odds are almost 6:1. Be sure to consider separately the cases of non-deuce and deuce games This question is a toughie anyone out there willing to contribute some of their imput on this question Thanks in advance

The question is... Find a unit vector which is perpendicular to both of the vectors 4i+2j-3k and 2i-3j+k. Originally i had thought you would transfer them into vector notation, and use something like the scalar product as a means of finding the perpendicular to both. I'm confused though the answer at the bottom of the page says the correct answer is [1/(9√5)]*(7i+10j+16k) Does anyone know how to arrive at this answer?

Right now I'm in IB Math SL. They didn't offer HL this year, but next year they are offering it. I'm really interested in math and I'm probably going to major in it in college, so I think it would be advantageous to do HL. I talked to my math teacher and he said I could probably switch. Basically, I'd be with the first-year IB students but be doing primarily independent study. Now, I'm not worried about whether I'd be able to handle the additional workload or whatever, math is my strongest subject and I already have a good background in calculus so I shouldn't have any trouble in that regard. But... first, would IB even be okay with switching after a full year in SL? Seco…
