Is there any list that tells us about which theory we need to know how to prove for the final exam? Some of these theory are quite complex and require memorization. ...Or do we just have to memorize them all?

Hey, guys. So my second term just ended. I got a 6 in Math SL without studying at all. However in the first term, i got a 3 in Math HL. I mean it just destroyed me inside out. After that i'd decided to take SL and never look back. But then I was told by a lot of people that UK universitites require math HL and that a 5 in HL is tons better than a 7 in SL. What i would like to know is, how difficult is it really to get a 5 or even a 6? Cheers!

Hi everyone! I've been working my way through the Cambridge Maths HL Textbook (by Fannon, Kadelburg, Woolley & Ward) for some revision, and while doing the complex numbers I encountered a couple of difficulties in answering the questions in exercise 15E. These are the ones concerning the sums and products of roots of real polynomial equations! In particular it's the questions asking me to show or prove something that I'm getting stuck on; my answers are always slightly different to what the textbook says is correct. I was hoping someone else could provide me with a second opinion, as I'm the only year 2 HL maths student at my school so I can't ask any of my friends!…

I've been really good at Maths until I started doing the IB. I'm really clueless as to how I should go about it. I'm a couple of months into the program but I'm not doing well in my tests. I need help. Can somebody please tell me all the necessary things to do in order to pick up my grades? Also, if you know any websites that have helpful videos explaining topics, websites for past papers and practice questions. I feel like the questions we do in class are pretty simple but when I look at the question paper they're so twisted! Please give me tips as to how I should be preparing for the tests and what kind of practice I should do everything? I have a progression test in …

Hey guys, This is my first time posting, so sorry for any mistakes in advance, if there are any, that is. In my school we have been given no choice for our options and are forced to do Statistics and Probability. The issue is that I hate Statistics and Probability with a passion and wanted to chose a more helpful topic for university like the Series and differential equations option. I would have no problem teaching this option to myself, I just don't understand the need of restricting the option, it's also odd since they're called OPTIONS. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate the feedback and explanations and if anyone else has this issue please let me know, I'd like to st…

Hi Guys. I desperately need help I'm writing my math exploration and my topic is the 'coastline paradox'. This is simply saying that if the scale that we use to measure the parameter of a territory, the parameter would goes to the infinite, due to the fractal shape made by the natural event'. What I did was using one country to show this paradox. I calculate one exponential formula as the trendline for this country's parameter. However, I don't know why I should do next. I'm in math HL and this especially means I have to demonstrate my math skills. Can anyone help me what I can do next to make my horrible math exploration better?

Hi all, My question is quite easy. I know the syllabus for 2014 has been changed for Math HL (I am already studying it), but I want to know whether it is harder or easier than the previous years. Also, why would matrices be removed from the syllabus? Aren't they used for calculating vector products?

Hello! My school runs Maths HL Further classes every Sunday for four hours, and they're optional for all Maths HL students. I think maybe 5-6 students in my Maths HL class have signed up for Maths Further as well. I have attended all the classes for Maths HL Further since I started the IB because I've always found it to be interesting. But that's just it, I never took the class super seriously because it was fun for me. But now that we're in Winter Break of IB2, my IB Coordinator seriously asked me if I wanted to sit the Maths HL Further exam anyway since I had attended all the classes and have studied most of the material. If I manage to get at least a 5, I could potenti…

My friend is doing his AI on proof of the binomial theorem and I am doing it proof of Leibniz's rule for the nth derivative of a product. Can someone tell me if we are not allowed to have both these topics in the same class. My concern is that we both have to use sigma notation identities, induction and some combination identities. The induction steps are different but similar and might even be considered as the same for the last few steps. I am worried that we might be braking some academic honesty rules. You can see the proof below http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~benchow/BinomialTheorem.pdf 109-HW06ans.pdf

Hello, I have attempted to solve the following question. Using integration by substitution, by taking u=sin(X), i get the same answer but without the (1/2) multiplied by the integrated function. I do realize that the book used u=2sin(x), but does it really matter if i take the coefficient of the term i am using to substitute or not? Thanks in advance, Fiz

I learnt today that I have to give my Math Portfolio idea in two days time (completely out of the blue) and I have no idea how to proceed. Like probably everyone else in the world, I have no clue how to get around picking a idea... Right now, my thoughts are towards studying the efficiency of traffic patterns (road patterns? Traffic management?), but I don't know if it is good enough. The school profs are also caught out by the rule change for 2014, so they are also quite uncertain. Any advice? I don't necessarily need to follow my current topic, but I need to get something good quick. I checked around online for ideas, but quite a lot of them either point to very simple …

Just one quick question... Does anyone know if (and if yes, how many) changes have been made to the Math HL Syllabus since 2005? I know that there was one in 2011 or so. Was that the only one? Because I honestly cant imagine that the IBO constantly changes the syllabus. Thanks

Hi. I'm doing my math portfolio on some exponential and logistic models of population growth, yet the one difficulty that I've been facing is that I can't get hold of some proper CONSECUTIVE population statistics. By consecutive I mean statistics of a city for e.g. 2066,2007,2008,2009... and not 2006,2011,2012... Currently I have access to some worthless statistics that are not for consecutive years and I'd appreciate it if anyone could introduce a source that would have proper records of any major city in the world. Thank you.

Ok, so I'm gonna apply to IB next year, but I have no idea if I'm gonna do Maths on HL or SL, because my school doesn't offer HL. They only offer an internet course. Does anybody have any experience with these internet courses, and if so, are they harder to "participate in" than regular classes. Because if my school offered Maths HL with a teacher actually present in the same room as me I would easily pick this, but now I don't know. Any thoughts?

I'm working on the new investigation for the 2014 exams term and I I'm having some trouble figuring out if my IA topic is math-centric enough. It's on the applications of the RSA algorithm and its construction, but I'm sort of worried it would fall more under a Comp.Sci topic. Is there a sort of guideline to assess really how much "math" you need to put into your Math IA?

I was reading around the internet about the math hl ia, and i saw that there were some changes that were made in the academic year 2013-2014, i asked my teachers but they were as clueless as me about it (school's first year of IB), and as such they arent much help when it comes to help regarding the internal assessment or exploration itself. With regards to my topic in mind (after trolling through various ibsurvival threads), i was thinking of doing something related to time travel or something about basketball, are these topics fine and if i were to select what angle would i approach them from? thanks in advance all help is appreciated. Hey guys, In my math HL course, we were given a real life problem about trigonometry. It is about two people that are looking to buy land and are given a map of it. They have to see whether the map is accurate or not and have to divide the land in half so that they can get a certain area of land. The specific background information and question to this problem will be attached. I tried solving this for literally hours and couldn't find a solution at all. Any help to solve this will be greatly appreciated! 03.09.02 Fifi and Christian Buy Some Land.pdf

Hi Guys! I chose to do my exploration on the "torricellis trumpet". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel's_Horn) I will be looking at how the surface area is calculated, how the volume is calculated and how the volume is finite but the surface area is infinite. I will also look at the painters problem and the limitations of the shape as a whole. But the problem is that the math used in this is very limited and is basically covered fully in the syllabus (so i don't get to do something out of the syllabus really) Also, There are so many resources on the internet explaining everything about it that it would be hard to show that my work is original I would appreciate any a…

Hello, I am currently taking Math HL in my final year, and lets just say i am not doing so well. I have always been the best student in my math class since i was a child, scoring A+ Since i have started with the Ib program, i have no idea why my score is not progressing more that a 5. Whats killing me that i have 7's in almost all other subjects except for math, and math is my most important subject to get a high mark in. Do you have any tips for maths HL? what did you do to get a higher mark? How do you study math? Any tips you have? Answering the questions above would help me greatly, i need your help. Thank you.

Hi. I would like to know whether my IA topic for the HL Math exploration meets the rigour of math criteria. I would like to do an exploration of the mathematics behind voting, and I will examine these: 1. Voter Profiles: Vectors on a plane to describe number of votes 2. Linear Transformations: Shifting of voters without changing the voting population 3. Evaluation of the three main voting systems (Plurality, Plurality with Run offs and Borda Count) through the fairness criteria (Majority, Condorcet, Monotonicity ) Thank you

Hello can someone who has done / is doing the calculus (previously called series and differential equations) option please help me with this question: Here's my opinion: there is no limit. I think this is the case because I cannot simplify the original expression and I assume that for all values of B (within its domain) this function would be periodic and hence has no limit. I've graphed this for different values of B and my initial thoughts seem to be correct. However I have no idea how to prove this, and l'Hôpital's rule isn't helping... My Topic is Real Life Applications of First Order Differential Equations - That's some part of Option 9, but I've added some Applications of Linear Differential Equations as well. My Teacher says the difficulty isn't HL Exploration Level yet, I'm not sure how to go with it, I've put basic applications - from population growth, to heating and cooling, mixing solutions and even electric circuits and half life and decay. Also, could you suggest any other application that I have missed out on? Especially concerning Linear/Bernoulli Differential Equations? Thanks!
