This isn't the actual IB exams but.... When I do tests throughout the semester for HL Math, I do really well. I get straight 7s. (tests and exams are based on past IB questions) But every time I do a semester exam, I completely mess up. For semester 1, I messed up on my exam and got a 6(overall semester grade is a 7). And this semester, I messed up as well. I thought I had prepared enough but the questions were ridiculously difficult. I don't understand why this happens. The level of difficulty is just so different. I had never come across questions as difficult as the ones I did on the exam I took today. Will this like be in the actual IB exams? I'm worried that I could …

The fish in a lake have weights that are normally distributed with a mean of 1.3 kg and a standard deviation of 0.2 kg. a) determine the probability that a fish that is caught weighs less than 1.4 kg. I'm not sure how to even approach this problem. I don't know how to use the mean and the standard deviation to be able to gain at least a p value that i can use t do the binomial distribution.

I'm going to be starting Maths HL next year, is there anything that I should know before starting the course? I've heard a lot of people say it's incredibly difficult, but I'd be willing to put the work in for it. Also, how difficult is it to attain 6/7 in this subject? If any current/former students could help out I'd be very grateful !!

Those who are predicted 6s and 7s in math HL. Remember this - if the paper seems really tough, then it is for everybody. Don't worry if you did "okay" on the paper. If its really hard, the grade boundaries tend to be much lower than usual (e.g 77/120 for a 7 in one of the practices I did). So please don't start freaking out that you'll miss your 6 or 7. Just keep calm and grind through the paper. Comb once through the paper solving the super easy qns, then go over again and again, solving the hardest qns. This is almost a message to myself, but it applies to all of you taking HL math in a couple of hours. Oh and just write down all your steps, show logic, you WILL ge…

The exam is coming up in like 9-10 days, I would like to my fellow math HL students: How the f*** do you finish every question in the paper within 2 hours (both p1 and p2)? excuse my bad langauge, but I am really pissed right now. The questions itself isn't that bad, but they are all so long!!! So far, I can finish section A and 1 - 2 questions (out of the usual 4) in section B. This applies for both papers. If I don't find a way to deal with this, I will be losing 60 points automatically for both papers combined! (section B has 60 marks, 60/2 * 2 = 60!!) Any help is appreciated! I really need a 7 in this subject

I read that for the math HL exams, they provide you with a information booklet of all the formulas. I found what I assume to be that information booklet (it says "Mathematics HL, Further Mathematics SL Information Booklet"), but it has so many formulas in it it seems too good to be true. Does IB really provide you with all of those formulas for the exams?

So I recently have gotten my Semester 1 results. I got Maths HL 4 Business HL 6 Economics HL 6 Malay A1 SL 6 English B SL 5 Bio SL 6 33 I'm feeling very down about maths lately. My teacher's extremely strict and really wants us to be independent unlike this another teacher who guide her students very well. I've been working so hard lately, and there has come to a point thaat I start to worry about maths. I intend to do accounting and finance. All my Maths SL friends mostly got 35 above.. I'm so jealous I'm worried if my teacher don't predict me a 5 or 6.. Most unis in UK wants 666 for HL. My maths teacher is very scary and I'm worried she won't predict me at least 5 or …

Hi guys, I'm doing my modeling maths porfolio on the dice game. You can find the task here. page 4. Currently, i'm doing the last two questions. For the second last task: let say, the player pays $30 for each game, and if he wins he will get his money back and the banks has to pay him as well. So if the probability of him winning the game is 15/36, out of 36 games, he can earn 15x30=$450 and the bank has to pay him a certain amount of money for every game he wins. does that sound alright? For the last task: in the case of multiple players involved in the game, is it that the each player rolls their dice once only or for the same number of times? And how do we decide who w…

I will start maths hl in fall. I am currently in the standard maths class. 1) Do you know of standard level students who have done well in HL maths? 2) How much time might I have to commit to doing maths each day/week? 3) How can I better prepare for this course on my own during the summer? Any websites, revision textbooks, or other resources which would be helpful? 4) I am working on SAT 2 maths, how difficult is this compared to what's covered in maths hl? 5) What are some general maths skills or habits which are important for maths hl? Any general tips on how to do well? Thank you!

Hello everyone, So I have finally started to revise for my Maths HL papers today and I found something really weird. On the Maths HL paper 1 examination of Nov of 2003 there is a question - Q 13 - That asks you to solve the following: Consider the equation (1+ 2k)x2 -10x + k -2 = 0, where k belongs to all real numbers. Find the set of values of k for which the equation has real roots. Now here is the answer given by the IB: _____ Can anyone please attempt this question and tell me what they get because what I got for the answer is not the same for what the mark scheme says, however, my answer does fit the set of values so the discriminant is equal or greater than …

I'm working my way through the Imaginary Numbers unit, and there were a few questions I was having trouble with. Since there are a few of them, I thought I might make a topic to get a little help from you guys about them. Thanks for the help, everyone! a) If z and w are complex numbers such that |z+w|=|z-w|, prove that abs(argz-argw)=π/2. When working on this question, I was able to prove that argz=arctan(a) and argw=arctan(-1/a). To prove the argument difference, I made the geometric observation that the reciprocal represents a reflection about y=0 and the multiplication by -1 represents a reflection about y=x; thus, geometrically, the transposed angle will differ from t…

For my Maths HL IA, I have chosen to investigate world records - specifically swimming times. I will obviously plot a graph, find it's function & asymptotes & then work out the sequence (it gets closer to 0, but never reaches it) But I'm not sure what other mathematical or other aspects I can explore to develop this further as it seems pretty simple... TOO simple in fact :/ Any help will be much appreciated!

Hei, I'm currently an exchange student in Finland. I took the pre-IB and IB1 at my home school back in Mexico, but now I jave decided I will start the IB all over again from IB1 after my exchange year is over, and with all this free time I have right now I think it would be pretty smart to start studying in advance some topics, or reading some books, I actually purchased the Pearsons Baccalaureate 2012 study guide, and have already started the first chapter. Plus, I still need to pass the entrance exam in April, which comprehends English, Finnish and Maths, as far as I know, so I need to start studying maths anyway. I was taking math studies, so this will be a big leap, …

I'm interested in taking Further Maths HL first examinations 2014. I'm fairly confident in my mathematical abilities, and plan to pursue a post-secondary education based around mathematics. I've been talking to my IB coordinator and he knows absolutely nothing about Maths or Further Maths, as he is a humanities teacher. There's not enough interest to create an entire class for it, and he won't let me take Further as a self-study as there's liability issues if I get a 3 or something on exams. In his eyes this isn't this problem for languages. I've seen some people talk about self-study mathematics on this forum, and I wonder how its possible. I know its half way through th…

I am unsure of which maths course to select for the IBDP (contemplating between SL and HL. I am currently in the Standard maths course in my final year of the MYP. Yet, I am finding the maths taught in this course very straightforward and I am expected to achieve a 7. I am interested in pursuing a career in a science-related field, so I guess HL maths is fairly necessary. To take into consideration - my other confirmed HL course is Physics HL and the third could be English or Art HL. I know that both these courses are already fairly demanding, I am willing to change my third HL depending on the maths course I end up choosing. So essentially, I would like to know, for a…

Hey, I plan on retaking several exams in IB, and maths HL is one of them. I need to get 6 from maths, and the question is, should I redo my IA tasks, because previously I got 26/40, it means a weak grade 5 from IA. What do you think? Should I redo IA, or just focus on learning/consolidating maths in order to get better results in exam? Are 26pts from IA good enough to get 6 in maths (I know it's possible, but won't it be a serious hindrance?). Doing Internal assessment tasks for the second time would take some time which could be spent on learning, and I think I still won't get higher than 32pts. So, what do you think?

Hi guys! I am soon going to get my assignment for HL math IA type II - mathematical modelling. I've been looking at some of the previous portfolio titles, and found myself quite confused as to what is this IA all about. They seem to require you to make up parameters and identify variables and stuff. Besides, I don't seem to quite understand what does the IBO mean by a "mathematical model". Is it an equation? Is it a couple of equations? Just what is it? Basically the question that I am asking here, is what is this type II IA all about, what is expected of me and what the hell is a "mathematical model"? Thank you in advance!

Hey guys! As you probably know, we (first examinations 2014) are doomed to come up with a topic for our mathematical investigation (or IA or sth like that) on our own, which (I believe) is quite hard, especially as the topic should rather be pure mathematics. Any maths magazines, books, websites where some ideas for research can be found? Of course I won't be trying to prove Riemann hypothesis but I bet no one is going to come up with 2+2 style problems either. Could you also clear up for me the idea of this entire mathematical investigation? Maybe I am wrong and it should be rather applied maths (like creating a model or sth)? Our teacher didn't give us much information …

Hi everybody, I'm on IB1 and I just did my Mathhl test (about complex numbers, sequences, logarithm and stuff like that) I think it went really bad for me, there were 8 questions and I have only finished 4 questions. I'm wondering if IB survival got any tips for me to survive mathhl in the future, cause I was really good in class but then the test just basically kicked me in the butt. IMO the test was really hard comparing to stuff I practiced on. People on IB2 MATHHL, were you guys in the same position? Thanks!
