In general, Applications and Interpretation covers a broad range of materials, but Analysis and Approaches covers a narrower range in greater depth. Below lists the main topics in each course, by color code from 2014-2020 syllabus Studies, SL and HL (including Further HL). New topics are italicized. HL includes all SL topics of the same course. Common topics in all new Math courses: Algebra: scientific notation, arithmetic/geometric progression, compound interest, annual depreciation, exponents/logarithms Functions: lines, graph of a function, domain/range, definition of inverse, identifying extremas, intercepts, symmetry, zeros, asymptotes Geometry/Tr…

Yup cabso is right...you are truly good at this.!!......I also had a question for you...Becuase I moved a few American schools... and i was never good at maths..actually is the subject i hate coz im really bad at it...but i was wondering if you could still get your IB diploma if you take the lowest Math class.which is Math SL I bet...even tough it was even more confusing with the amercan formula that had a bigger varitey of levels including calculus...and all of that....

I haven't seen any IA tips around so I guess I would share some tips gathered from my Mathematics HL teacher's suggestions, some IBSurvival members' suggestions, my own knowledge and my own experiences. Cover Page Unless this is set by your school, I recommend that your cover page includes: • School Name (e.g. Sekolah Tiara Bangsa – ACS) • School Crest, if available • Subject & Level (e.g. Mathematics HL) • Portfolio Type (e.g. Portfolio Type I) • Portfolio Title (e.g. Patterns Within Systems of Linear Equations) • Candidate Name (e.g. Desy Kristianti) • Candidate Number (e.g. 001863-002) • Examination Session (e.g. May 2012) Header and Footer I recommend that your H…

Here is some advice that you might want to follow right before and during the Math examination. Although most of these things are common sense, I think that putting it all down in words helps. So, 1) Ensure that you have atleast 2 working pens, a ruler, an eraser, two working pencils and your GDC put into your bag the night before the exam. - The last thing you want to do is forget something small and go around begging people for it/ going home to get it right before the exam. 2) Change the batteries of your GDC the night before the Paper 2 exam. - I know this is kind of extreme but after having used the GDC for so much exam practice [hopefully], the batteries might be ru…

Hello people! I have seen Biology, Chemistry and Physics help threads; I figured I would create one for Mathematics too. I'm willing to help any Mathematics student with their problems or doubts. I am sure there would also be some other helpers, so if you have any Math question just post here unless they are questions regarding IA tasks. Questions regarding IA tasks must be posted in the correct IA threads and not here. Questions from textbooks, worksheets or even past year papers may be asked here no matter whether they are for Math HL, SL or even Studies. Please also include which Math level you are taking so the solution and explanation would be suitable with the exten…

IBS has a system set up which allows you to enter in various bits of code and have them appear as mathematical symbols called Tex tags. For instance, rather than writing x^3, you can write . This is a quick guide explaining how to make this work for some of the more common Maths symbols you need for the IB. It may also come in handy as a way to copy/paste in as graphics for IAs, where relevant. For a more comprehensive overview, please take a look at this site: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Mathematics Additional Links (kindly suggested by Chrypton) Detexify - This site contains a white drawing area where you can draw a math symbol that you don't know the LaTeX c…

The growing number of posts, where solutions to internal assessment tasks are given, has unfortunately led me to create a specific rule for this forum. Do not post mathematical solutions to questions about Internal Assessment tasks. IB rules clearly state that students are not allowed to gain direct help, whether oral or written, in writing their mathematics IA tasks. Thus, even if a student is desperate in proving a statement or finding the correct method to problems, you may not give the answer to him. You may, however, give an answer of general nature (without actual calculation) that will direct a student to the methods required to find a solution. For examp…

Hi, I am in need for more ideas about my Maths IA (Maths A&I SL). I investigate the relationship between sleeping hours and working hours. I already performed chi-square test, regression analysis and I created box n' whisker plot, but my teacher thinks that it requires further analysis. Thank you in advance!!! 😊

Hi everyone. I'm having a little trouble with my Math IA., I would like to do the topic "The Mathematics behind Medical Testing", where I would speak about false positives / false negatives and the probability of getting them. However, I don't know where to get data from. Am I supposed to make up a hypothetical situation / disease and then make fake numbers for it ? Is that even allowed..? I would be using conditional probability to find the probability of a student testing positive for the XYZ disease, actually having the disease. I would be using the conditional probability formula, but I'm finding that the math is very limited (there's not much to do).…

Hi everyone! I am an IB senior and was just finishing up the first draft of my extended essay. My topic is based around models on forecasting the stock market, specifically comparing two models and their effectiveness in terms of accuracy on forecasting the stock market. However, I was running into a few issues when trying to sort out my calculations. As I was working through my calculations I realized that a few of my data crunching calcs needed to be done in R/Rstudio. I was wondering if R is permitted to be used in Math EE's as long as there are significant physical calculations for the methods used in R. Any assistance would be great!

Hey! I was wondering if anyone has done a Maths IA (exploration) connected with sport and calculations around it, can be both HL or SL. I have to write an essay in Maths (for a competition) which is somehow similar to IA (but it's not really about IA), so that's why it doesn't have any specified level of Maths required. I was thinking of calculating something with skiing (or figure skating) cause I'm interested in that and I think I could find some Maths in it. However, I'm not sure how to tackle the topic (I'm in Y1 so we haven't started our IAs yet) and what it could possibly be about. If anyone has done an IA (or another Maths essay) in any of these topics, …

Hello there, I have two questions one is that how much do IB expect from us to write in EE math, since it is really difficult to write up to 3500. second one is that how do plagiarism really works. In math we cannot really change a proof of a theory, so if I took it from a source does it really counts as plagiarism or rephrasing it and citing it counts.

Hello I take maths SL and my homework for the winter break was to come up with a topic for the IA. I'm considering f/stops in photography which has something to do with geometric sequences and some mathematical explanation why these stop numbers make sense. It seems good enough, I guess, but my concern is that it's not very authentic. May I have your opinions, please? Hadassah

I am about to finish writing my Math IA, but since I did a lot of research, I made the font quite small and made the margins and spacing shorter so that I could fit my research into the 6~12 page restriction. Isnt it ok to make your font, spacing and margins however small/big you want it, as long as the page number is between 6~12? There is no set rule, would I get marked down if I cram too many words for my IA?

Today I got to know that my school has dropped math HL because lack of teachers and they say that students don’t get above 4 in math HL while most just switch to SL, leaving 1-2 students for math HL (our IB batches are quite small, like 15 students in a batch). So my school is against math HL and our coordinator was telling us that engineering/compsci unis accept math SL (giving a scholarship on merit too) anyway so what’s the point of taking math HL. Is she right? Should I take math SL or should I talk to my head about making an exception for me and letting me take HL? I’ve performed well in GCSE math and additional math (yeah yeah IB is different but I mean that my math…

I am in grade 11 right now and am taking math SL. I am really struggling. In the winter mock exams we had, I got a 2/7 for P1 and a 2/7 for P2. My recent in-class test was not that much better either (3 but 1 point from a 2). I am worried that I might not pass with SL math at all. Should I move down or is it too late? Do you guys think I will get better grades if I work more / get more tutoring?

Hello, I am an 8th grade student who has recently been accepted into the Pre-IBDP program. I will go to Colonel By Secondary School in Ottawa next year. So we don't have a lot of course choices next year. For math, however, I can choose either MPM1DE (which is the accelerated pre-ib math course that leads to either HL or SL Math in grade 11) or MPM1D (which is the regular academic course in math which leads to SL Applications & Interpretation Math in grade 11). I want to be able to take HL Math in grade 11, but I hear it is an advanced course that consists of two years while SL Applications & Interpretation Math take only one year. Can you give me an explanation o…

I'm going to be a senior in high school and I need help deciding what math class to take as a senior. During my junior year, I took IB Math SL 1 and got a B-. Next year, I can either go on to IB Math SL II or take IB Math Studies SL (my school teacher math studies as a one year course). I plan on majoring in business management. I feel like I could easily get a 6/7 in Math Studies while I would get a lower grade in SL Math. The two main colleges I'm looking at are Virginia Tech and The University of Virginia. If I'm planning on majoring in business, should I take IB Math SL or IB Math Studies?

Hello everyone! As a part of my math ia, I am analysing the pharmacokinetic profile of a drug. A part of the pharmacokinetic profile involves finding the area under the curve of the medication's concentration - time graph. I think this area is meant to represent the total exposure of the drug to the paitent's body. This is what it says online as well. In other words, it would be the total amount of drug absorbed by the body. However, I'm not quite sure how this works, as the units used for the y axis (miligrams of the drug in each litre of drug - mg/L) are completely different from the x axis (time in hours or minutes). Multiplying these units would give you (mg*hr)/…

I'm from class 2021 (which means that I'll start DP next school year) and I had just recently learned that there are going to be changes in the math curriculum going into effect starting next year. So I heard that maths will be divided into 2 different subjects, Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretations. With these new changes and my subject selection coming soon, there are a few questions I would like to ask: 1. What are the differences between the two 2. How do they compare to the current Math curriculum (Studies, SL, HL) in terms of difficulty/workload 3. And finally, if I'm planning to study Economics in the UK which one should I …

Hey guys, I'm in a pretty stressful situation as I can't decide whether to change my current SL Math to HL Math, and we're already getting to the point where it is too late to change. My situation: Currently taking HL Bio, Chem, Eng A Lang/Lit, Danish B and SL Math, and History. As I can only have two sciences, my only option is to switch to HL math (which is already quite a bit ahead of SL) to push myself out of those ridiculously l…

So I'm currently a freshman (9th Grade) taking Algebra II/Trig, and was wondering which math class to take next year (10th Grade). The choice is between SL or HL math. I have gotten pretty different information from various sources. Hello! Just putting it out there that I’m new to this site, so please forgive me if I haven’t done this correctly or anything. I’m planning on starting my IB maths IA exploration for my HL class these holidays, and I was wondering whether anyone has any ideas for good topics? I’m interested in algebra, calculus and geometry. I do have some ideas for topics, and I’m leaning towards: Fractals - I’m not sure if this is a good topic or not, as after hours of scrolling through threads on here many people have said that it is too complicated? I had originally planned to perhaps figure out some formulas regarding some of the simpler fractal designs like…

Hi Guys, Now that Year 1 has ended, its almost time for me to get serious about colleges and that stuff. This year, I maintained a steady 5 in HL Math throughout the year, but I was thinking about dropping to SL, where it is more likely that I will get a 7 or at least a 6. I want to do Computer Sciences and Engineering in college, preferably in the U.S. Would it be better for me to switch to SL since that might bump me up to a total of 35 points (without EE and ToK), or should I stay in HL since that might look better on my transcript and my predicted grades? Thanks, Maharaja Stylo

I'll be beginning the first year of the diploma program in September and I'm worried. Generally, I'm confident that if I put in 100% effort into my work I'll do fine in every subject that I've chosen, however I'm not so sure about math. This year (Gr. 10), I put in very minimal effort and I got a 68 in my general math class, which was around 22 points under the average. While I plan to put in an astronomical amount of effort into 11th and 12th grade, I'm still afraid that my best won't be enough. I really want to prepare myself during the summer. So far, I've bought the Pre-IB Math prep book by the OSC. For the most part, I just want to make sure that I know the mat…

Hello all! I'd just like to discuss something that I think is important to me and in also everyone else who does Maths Studies. Why do people think Studies is bad? It's not. They say it's an easy course for the 'less-able' students, but this isn't the case. I'd just like to clarify that the Maths Studies course is simply only more statistic-based, without the calculus and etc side of mathematics. It's for people that don't necessarily need complex Maths such as Physics, Mathematics, Economics maybe, etc.. For other things, it's not needed, such as art-careers. Also, it is worth noting that taking Maths Studies is a good opportunity to get a high score and in turn you can …

I'm reviewing for my Calc III course and I came across a problem that's stumped me and I can't easily find any example of on the web. Given point A (0, 2, 2) and B (2, 2, 2), find the set of all points P such that vector AP is perpendicular to vector BP. My first reaction was thinking this was easy, and I just set up an equation with one unknown P, where I let the dot product = 0 (as the vectors should be perpendicular). This gives me a quadratic equation and thus two values for P. However, I'm afraid this is wrong as my options for the surface (I also have to write the surface's equation) are plane/line/sphere/cone/parabaloid/hyperboloid. Thanks.
