I am just asking about geometric sequences in general. We define a geometric sequence as follows, right? a, ar, ar2, ar3, ar4, ar5, ..., arn Is there any limitation on the values of a and r? Or particularly, can a and r be zero? If a and/or r are/is zero, would the sequence be considered a geometric one? Thanks a lot beforehand!

Im not too sure if this is both HL and SL btw, but as I do HL, I prefixed it HL. Okay, so currently we are doing radians and all that, and I have a quiz on it tomorrow. I was looking at my table of sine and cosine values for the 16 point circle, and I discovered a pattern that might make things easier for others doing the same thing Oh btw, the sixteen point circle is: The important thing here is to note the radian measures, they actually help in this case So here's the table and explanation I have (I might have missed some points out, let me know if I have any mistakes). http://www.scribd.com/doc/41721338 Enjoy! edit: scribd killed a lot of the formatting, sorry

Hey guys, I am going to be doing Maths HL next year. I was wondering whether 3D geometry is needed in the syllabus? (if so, please specify which part). Also for those who has done it or is doing it, what is the most difficult chapter in the syllabus and what does it take to do well (getting a 6 or 7) in HL maths? Thanks sooo much!

Hi, really need help with this assignment. It is about using 36 coins to make a square or a triangle. In the square, the coins produce square numbers and in the triangle, the coins make triangular numbers. I have a few questions: i) How would i use technology to develop a more mathematical way to of generating square numbers (1,4,9,16..) and also triangular numbers (1,3,6,10...) ii) What patterns would arise with these answers iii) What would be a formula for these results. Really need help people, thank you.

Hi everyone, I am studying sampling distribution now which is a small part of the statistics maths option. Our teacher gave it early to us so we can do some work beforehand. I think this is good because I already finished a large part of the syllabus during the summer. I was wondering if anyone here in the forum has done the stat option in maths HL and can give me some problems that they encountered or some questions that I can ask myself to facilitate my learning. Thanks alot guys.

The question goes as follows: In a certain town three newspapers are published. 20% of the population read A, 16% read B, 14% read C, 8& read A and B, 5% read A and C, 4% read B and C, and 2% read all 3. A person is selected at random. Use a venn diagram to help determine the probability that the person reads: a.) none of the papers b.) at least one of the papers c.) exactly one of the papers d.) either A or B e.) A given that the person reads at least 1 paper f.) C, given that the person reads either A or B or both. Now I've tried to solve this problem for about an hour now, cant seem to even get the correct answer for a... answers are: a.) 13/20 b.) 7/20 c.) 11/50…

Hello I am currently working on my maths IA and the one this year really makes you think sort of out of the box... the problem is based on dimensions and deviding objects in maximum possible parts I managed to find the general formulas and prove them by induction.. the only problem is that although it does work, everything is based on the assumption that my recursive formula for the 3rd dimension works In 2d i cut the circle and get the recursive of previous number of pieces pbtained + the number of the cut... Can someone give me any clues on how to prove the recursive formula for the third dimension? cause you can sort of "see" it, but really no obvious justification..…

Hey guys, i've been working on this problem for an hour, i simply cannot get it!. Help would be greatly appreciated: The roots A and B of the quadratic equation: x^2-kx+(k+1)=0 are such that A^2+B^2 = 13 Find the possible calues of the real number k. I've got these three equations, but i can't seemto get anywhere withthem: A^2+B^2=13 A+B = k (b/c of the addition of roots rule) AB = k+1 (b/c of the multiplication of roots rule) Cheers to anyone that helps

So we have threads for Science options already, here comes the maths option thread. So for HL, what option are you all doing? Did you actually get to choose your option? My teacher actually chose our option for us, and we did Stats but it's something I'm so grateful for right now. I have to take a Stats course this semester at uni and it's all the IB Stats stuff so it's mostly revision. I'm listening to a lecture on the normal distribution right now actually and it's all coming back to me.

I just finished my Pre-Ib year and thinking over my future. I think I've made my choices for Ib which are the following; Higher Level Mathematics Chemistry English A1 Swedish A2 Standard Level Biology Philosophy The choice I'm really insecure about is math. I'm not really too sure about my direction in terms of possible career paths. I really just picked subjects that would serve as a proper foundation for future studies and that I like, to some extent. I scored pretty much all 7's this year with the exception of Swedish, History and Math where I got 6's. The math grade is mostly due the fact that I had to teach myself everything over the year (worthless teacher). Anyways…

I find with this option, it's split into 3 parts: 1. graph theory (like Prims, etc) 2. maths counting like Euclidein theory, etc. 3. proofs. Basically, I get very stuck on how to approach the proofs. How do you guys approach it, so you not want proof you need to work with, etc? Also, what do you guys think is the best way to revise for this exam - just question after question? Thank you!

wow..... this investigation that i received today is due in 1 1/2 weeks from now and yet i don't have any clues on how to even start this thing. The investigation is about analyzing the relationship between certain probability distributions and the first part of it asks you to build a model. So its about two players playing Tennis and they play for 10 points- and one person wins about twice as many points as the other person. OK HERE COMES THE PART WHICH I'M COMPLETELY LOST. The instruction tells you to find an appropriate model for the distribution of X, the number of points won by the player who wins twice as many points. So what do you think about this??? what would b…

Hello, I have my Math HL exams in 5 weeks (and all other exams too naturally). Anyway, I am practicing right now and I just encountered this problem that I cannot solve. Looking at the answer, I understand the concept but not the actual working. I'd be very thankful if anyone could look at it and possibly offer an intermediate step. I attached problem & answer. So, first you assume the claim works also for n=k. Yes. Then, to prove it for n=k+1, they take the expression for k from the assumption and differentiate it again. I get that, too. But I don't understand the working of the differentiation [from 2nd line of d^(k+1)y/ dx(k+1)on]. Do they use the product rule? Sti…

Hi, So I noticed there are loads of threads about the common Maths levels but none about Further Maths, so I wanted to make this thread where we can exchange experiences, maybe help each other out if we're stuck and generally just talk about Further Maths... For starters, am I the only non-Asian person to be taking this course? Yes, yes, I know that comment is prejudiced but my observations so far corroborate my impression... Also, at my school (if we wish to take Further Maths), Further Maths is a self-study and not a normal subject like any other with a teacher(which is why I have 7 subjects). I have a guidance teacher who helps me out if I have problems understanding a…

I'm currently in 11th grade. Last year, when my math teacher was conferencing with us concerning which math we were going to take in IB, she was basically letting us choose between SL and Studies. She said that HL was too challenging for all but 2 of our students (they both skipped a few math courses and had taken some of the advanced classes). I wasn't too thrilled about this. This year, I've learned almost nothing in the SL class and I have over 100% in it. Last week, the teacher asked me if I would be willing to move up to the HL class during my senior year. I of course accepted the offer. However, I have a few questions about this... Will I still be able to get HL cre…

I realized a few days ago I need to take HL math in order to have a shot at getting into a course I want to get into. The problem is that I am currently taking SL math (a stupid decision made because of pure laziness). My question is whether switching depends on the school or does the IB program have rules about this? I'm really stressed out about whether my school will let me switch classes. I'm in the middle of IB1 and haven't done any IA's but the HL class has. I'm currently on winter break so won't be able to ask for another week.

Hi I think our IB HL Math class is behind compared to other schools when it comes to the portfolios. Our teacher gave us a practice question to do before she hands us the real ones. It deals with induction quite a bit, which I have a lot of trouble with. I remember the rules of induction are: 1. Assume P(n) is true. 2. Show P(1) is true 3. Assume P(k) is true. 4. Show P(k+1) is true. Usually the most trouble I have is with the step #4. I can never figure out to show the last step as being true. So I was wondering if anyone has any other tips or helpful methods they use in trying to prove something by induction? Thanks.
