Coming up with an appropriate IA topic has been sooo difficult for me... I just find myself to struggle a lot with the whole exploration aspect of it. So far, I decided to do "linear programming". I'm going to talk about mathematical optimization in the beginning .. and gradually getting into the field of linear programming where I would be making my own objective functions and constraints ( how much of Food X and food Y I should eat so the fat, carb. content is to a minimum ...while protein to a max. etc) However, I'm not sure now what specific area of linear programming I should do an in-depth exploration on... Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any he…

IA (HL) Math Exploration - Egyptian Fractions

Hey Guys, Our Math teacher told us to do a mock exploration over the Christmas vacation. Since I only had a day to submit my topic I decided on Egyptian Fractions without doing extensive research. Now that I finally started writing it I realized that the level of math is not up to the mark and I am not sure if I can write even six pages. Since I was absent when my teacher explained the exploration I am still not really sure what it is all about and how to chose a topic. Any help regarding this would be much appreciated. Also we are limited to trigonometry, functions, counting principles, logs and sequences because those are the only topics we have finished in class so far…

Hey, I am currently doing the PreIB, and I'm having lots of trouble understanding math and following in class even though the countless hours of practicing at home. I really want to take HL maths next year but at the moment I have a weak 5 (out of 6) and I feel like I could do so much better. Obviously practicing hasn't really worked out for me, what should I do to become better? p.s. I might have posted this in the wrong subforum, sorry.

Hi guys! Just a little bit of personal background: I started the IBDP at Riga State Gymnasium #1 in Latvia 5 days ago. I'm taking Mathematics HL as my Group 5 subject, and also taking Further Mathematics HL as an additional subject (i.e., not included on the diploma). I love mathematics and have some background in Computer Science, which seems to be quite relevant in the Discrete Mathematics Option, with all the graph algorithms and what not. I also probably know almost all of the Calculus Option thanks to Robert Ghrist's (UPenn) wonderful Single Variable Calculus Coursera course I took this summer. My school does not have an FM teacher, so I'm left (almost) on my own…

Hey guys! I've just started working on my mathematical exploration - I wrote a plan of my work and outlined what I want to do and in what order. The topic is "Graphical interpretation of the complex roots of quadratic and cubic equations". Besides the fact that I'm concerned about the level of mathematics used (I'm afraid that finding the roots graphically and determining a general solution may not be sophisticated enough), now I'm even more worried: I've found out that something similar to my topic was actually a task for the portfolio a few years ago (namely task "Shadow Functions" from 2012/2013, which you can find here). It turned out that my plan is quite similar to …

hey there! I'm doing my IA on complex numbers and it involves complex numbers with a variable x. I was thinking that it would be good to give my results on a real-imaginary plane which would show how the values change when x changes. Does anyone know whether there's a software which could help me do this. I have geogebra but I am only able to illustrate single points with it and that is not too helpful..

hey there! I'm doing my exploration on imaginary exponents and Euler's formula etc. One thing that I'm investigating is that what happens when you change the base number which is raised to the imaginary exponent. for positive numbers it is pretty straight forward as you can express them in terms of e. But when considering negative base numbers it gets a lot trickier. Basically the problem understanding (-1)^i , as you can then multiply it by any positive number raised to imaginary exponent. I still haven't figured out how it work. And the most curios thing about is that it gives a real number! (app. 0,043214). I know getting that from a calculator doesn't prove anything …

Hello, IB Survival People! For some random reason I chose Benford's law as my IA exploration topic because it seemed interesting and sophisticated at first. However, now that I am working on it, and did a draft, I realized that it is easier than expected, and does not meet the "math standards" for a HL IA. I basically explained the probability of the leading digits appearing using a Logarithmic scale, and did some basic proofs using logs. What are some of the ways to increase the difficulty of the math for this topic? Can you suggest some areas of the law that I could explore further into? Do I apply things like central limit theorem? Or integrals to calculate the area …

Hello So, my math teacher is not used to marking HL IAs as I'm the only student that he's taught in awhile. Consequently, he can't help me much with my math IA. We're both unsure that mine is on the level appropriate. I'm using differential equations to set up a model for the spread of Ebola (SEIR model), but I have to use Matlab (computer software) to solve those equations. Still, I explain the logic behind the equations (why the look like they do) and use the Maclaurin series to rewrite a variable. Is this acceptable or should I aim for more HL maths? Sorry for the ramble!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to ask whether anyone has any advice on studying for the Maths HL papers 1 and 2. I´ve been studying by myself but Im somehow starting to feel haunted by the fact that every exercise is different on each topic. I mean, every single example is different, It´s very rare to find two exercises that are alike. Im currently using past exams to study, but Im still kind of struggling with anxiety, math is my only concern. Thanks in advance! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi! I'm currently working on my Math IA (HL), in which I'll be using differential equations. Now, do I have to explain what a derivative is? As in, the gradient of a line as x --> 0 using limits? This should be in the SL syllabus, right? I don't want to include unnecessary stuff ... Thanks for your amazing advice!

Hi guys, I have a problem with choosing a topic for my Maths IA. I don't have much time, and I can't find a suitable topic. I'm interested in architecture and engineering, and it'd be great to write an IA about the applications of maths in those areas. I thought that exploring the shape of the Eiffel Tower or comparing the properties of different types of arches would be interesting, but I can't specify what I would calculate etc. :l Thank you for your help! My ia is about the vicsek fractal, and if new fractals can be made by modifying it. Instead of three squares, it is divided into 4 squares. Anyways my doubt ia that I don't think that there is a high enough level of maths to get a good grade, as the only maths used are calculating the perimeter and area of the fractal, as well as the area and finding its general formula. Also, I use logarithms to find its fractal dimension. What could I include so that I get a better grade in the E criterion?

Hi people, I have lots of confusion for this Math IA. So I am in the first class that is going to graduate taking IB in my school and my math teacher has never taught IB..so my question is how many tasks do we need to do for this course. I read some websites and it seemed like to complete your portfolio you need to do TASK I - mathematical investigation and a TASK II - mathematical modeling to complete your internal assessment. is this true?? and we have to do one in the first year and another in the second year? By the way, is the teacher supposed to give us a list of topic to choose from? Because my teacher hasn't. But I have also thought of a topic - a comparison …

My school does not offer Mathematics HL or Physics HL. I am currently taking Economics, English A2 and Spanish A1 HL(English and Spanish HL are compulsory in my school) and Chemistry, Physics and Math SL, but my school has offered me the possibility of studying Physics HL by myself instead of taking the Economics HL IB exam. However, I still don't have the possibility of studying Math HL, and, from what I've heard, Math HL is too hard to study by myself. However, I want to study theoretical physics or possibly even mathematical physics at a good university in the USA, like MIT. Is Math HL a requirement for this? What do you think of studying Physics or Math HL by myself? …

so i got my year 1 test back and i failed miserably (below 40%). I really don't know what to do. I studied so hard for this test over the summer and in the first month of school, but I just cannot seem to get my math grades up. I understand the concepts, but whenever we have a test, I clam up and just forget everything. I have tried to get my anxiety under control but I really don't know what to do anymore. dropping is not an option as I need this subject for university entrance. Maybe my studying techniques are wrong? I really don't know what to do... I'm so frustrated because I tried so hard.

Today I had my first day at IB, and I'm really excited for the two upcoming years, but I'm so uncertain when it comes to choosing if I should do Mathematics SL or HL. All the teachers tell me not to do HL, and they basically told me I'm going to get a bad grade. If I do HL I'm going to have internet courses, becuase I'm the only one taking it from my class. I want to become a lawyer and I know I basically could have Math Studies, but I really like mathematics, and I got an A the first and second semester last year. Hello all , I am a student who is in IB2 and who has recently decided to take up HL Maths due to the fact that I believe I made a very wrong decision by taking SL Maths due to the fact that HL Maths is more or less required everywhere in the UK for engineering. The reason for this very bad decision was mainly due to the fact that I was encouraged to get as much points as possible not focus less on requirements for courses. I have now been told by the HL Mathematics teacher that I will have to sit a test on the 13th of October for Complex and Imaginary numbers and I will be able to join the HL class only and only if I attain something above a 4. May I please have …

So after a summer of studying for my Y1 exam, I felt prepared and confident that I would get at least a 5. My IA topic is 'Exploring the 17 plane crystallographic groups in Alhambra Palace' I visited AlHambra Palace, that is located in Granada Spain last summer, and was really impressed by the complexity of its architectures and wall patterns. And the influence of math in art really struck me. I also really want to major in Architecture so that added to my interest, and Islamic Architecture is a big interest of mine. Alhambra palace has been said to contain all 17 crystallographic groups (wallpaper patterns): which is the classification of two-dimensional patterns, based on the symmetries in the patterns. My aim is to investigate and prove the presence of the 17 crystallogr…

Hello everyone, I am not sure about what the math IA can be like, but can it be a proof for an already established formula. For example, I tried to prove the binomial theorem expansion formula from scratch. Is that a possible topic for IA? would I achieve a high grade if I do prove it in a different way than that already established? I would really appreciate it if you guys replied .. I have mixed feelings right now, as I am not sure if I have done something good or bad.

Hey all! I was hoping that some of you could help me with my HL Math IA, or 'exploration,' as it is now called. I wanted to do my IA over the maths of music, but I've had a really hard time a) finding a topic that might be considered 'sophisticated' enough for HL b) coming up with a rationale/ aim of the investigation. I'm really kind of confused as to how I am supposed to frame my work. Anyway, I think I may have finally found a topic that is interesting, and technically in the HL math syllabus. So I am currently in my summer vacation before my senior year and trying to catch up to what I missed in Math HL last year (Quadratics, functions, Complex numbers, Trigonometry, Vectors, Statistics and probability) I am finding it quite challenging and the questions in the question bank are torture. High five guys! Unfortunately I managed to fail this year's Math HL exam that I took in May. I have already singed up for a retake in Nov session, however some thoughts cannot get off my mind. Namely I scored 2 and my question is if it is possible to get a really high mark or at least above 5 taking my case into consideration? I know I have to study hard ( that's what I'm working on ). We all know if something is within our reach, we strive for achieving the goal. The thing is that I'd like to know if I have any chances of achieving mine. It helps a lot.. I mean mentally, you feel secure and you know what to fight for. Anyway .. please let me know what you think of it.…

I am in Calculus BC as a junior which would technically be Further Math HL 2 right? So does that mean I take the HL test this school year? But this is my school's first year doing IBDP so my calc teacher is focusing more on the AP students for the AP tests rather than the 6 IB students who are in Calc BC while the other 80 students are in Calc AB. So I'm worried that I won't be prepared for the HL test this year? Should I take Calc BC this year and Stats next year and then take the HL test that year or is that risking forgetting a lot of things? Or should i take Calc BC and AP stats this year together?
