Hey all, so I happen to be taking the Further Mathematics exam in May 2014 (a little under two weeks from this posting) and I was wondering what people thought of the Specimen paper, and how the curves will be. I personally got ~120/150 on Paper 1, and am expecting at most 90/150 on Paper 2. Are these scores even remotely close to a 5~6 level (it's what I'm aiming for)? Also, any thoughts on what the score boundaries might be like? Thanks.

My math isn't really the HL standard yet, and doing the IA is even harder (In short, I'm weak at Math HL) I decided to explore on Tetris, but I'm unsure of what area of Math should I explore. Any ideas? Edit: I went over to this thread http://www.ibsurvival.com/topic/27148-math-hl-ia-an-exploration-of-the-exploration/ but I still don't understand what to do :/ Which part of math does Tetris have?

Hi, I am a little bit confused with how to use vector notation properly. For example, given point A (1, 2, 3) and B (4, 5, 6), then vector AB will obviously be (3, 3, 3). However, one of my friends told me that I have to write vector AB as a column vector. This is because (3, 3, 3) is the notation for a co-ordinate, rather than a vector. Is this true? and will I get marked down in an exam if i write (3, 3, 3) instead of a column vector? Thanks!

Hey, I'm wondering what apps and programs I am allowed to have in my GDC (Texas Ti-84 Plus) during the math examination. The program that I have right now is Polynomial Root Finder and Simultaneous Equation Solver (PolySmlt APP) which i used all the time, but can I use it in the exam? Thanks

Hi guys, I need some advice... I started math HL with the intent of stretching my mind, and becoming a more mature 'math thinker', I thought that I would do decent in this course (5ish), as my math was pretty alright (90-95 avg). However, nearing the end of the first year, I find myself to be struggling in this class, and I just got my recent predicted grade back for the third school term, and I was predicted a 4! I already saw it coming, as I did pretty poorly for my recent tests, but I am at the point where I am starting to worry that I will never raise my score beyond a 5. I need a solid 6 by the fall, because those scores would be sent to universities in the EA/ED ro…

Soooo.... the other day, I remembered that while going through the syllabus we had been told that there would be a few substitutions we would be required to memorize for integration by substitution. However, in the syllabus, we have this: What exactly are 'standard substitutions' that we have to memorize? It's very vague to me. These are the ones our teacher gave us: integral of sqrt(a^2 - x^2) dx => x = asin(theta) integral of sqrt(x^2-a^2) dx => x = asec(theta) integral of sqrt(x^2+a^2) dx => x = atan(theta) (unfortunately, I don't remember how to get theta...) Are there any others we need to know? And I would be grateful if anyone could kick start my…

Hi everyone! I've been doing some probability revision and I stumbled across this one question which I just can't figure out. I've tried it multiple ways but I keep getting the same answer, which would be good, if only that answer was the same as the answer in the book. I thought it might be a mistake on the book's part, our answers are quite similar for part (b), but I'm no where near for part (a). The answers just say "Did you consider finding the complement?" which is a bit annoying because that's what I did. Anyway, I was hoping if someone could please have a look at this question? Thank you!

I just selected my topic for Math IA after fifteen min or so look at the list presented in my book: predicting a solar ellipse sounds to me the most interesting of all. My question is whether it is sophisticated enough for a HL IA ? And is there enough and appropriate level of math that a 11th grader would understand?

This is the question: A factory makes wine glasses. The manager claims that on average 2% of the glasses are imperfect. A random sample of 200 glasses is taken and 8 of these are found to be imperfect. Test the manager’s claim at a 1% level of significance using a one-tailed test. I did this question and I got 0.029160179 as the p-value. However, the mark-scheme says the answer is 0.0493 (using binomial distribution) or 0.0511 (using Poisson distribution). Is my answer wrong? or is the mark scheme wrong? Could you perhaps show the method you used to work out the answer? Thanks in advance!

Okay, I might be completely stupid for asking this, but I'm having a blank. Could anyone explain the following point to me: squareroot(m^2) = |m| Please? m is just any real number, it doesn't specify whether it's positive or negative, and since (-m)^2 is the same as m^2 I'm a bit confused. A minor detail, I know, and I feel a bit silly for asking, but it would really help me understand this proof I'm doing if someone could help me out! Thanks!

Hey guys, just one quick question: Is there a "Final Math HL Formula Booklet - First Examinations in 2014"? I found a few drafts, but if the first examinations are in 2014, there has to be a final version out there, right? I also found quite a few with a big watermark ("DRAFT") on it, but as i want to print out that version, i don't want to use that. Could anyone send me a link? Thanks

So I just attempted paper 1 for 2014 Syllabus Specimen Paper. I'm quite conflicted on what to make of it, I thought it was kind of borderline hard, and asked questions which differed from the usual pattern. Plus there were some questions which were quite different from the previous papers like Question 7 and Question 9. What are your thoughts on this, and if you could please help in solving these questions! Thanks a lot! P.S - Just google the specimen paper, and you'll find it

Hi again everyone! While doing an exam question this morning I got a bit confused regarding the different ways of expressing complex numbers, and I've found different answers when I tried to look it up, so I was hoping someone could help me out! When writing complex numbers in modulus-argument form, is that rcis(theta) or in the exponential form? I've seen a couple of different answers so I'm not actually sure which form I should be using... Thanks!

My main concern is when I am working with binomial, Poisson and normal distribution. Sometimes( only twice out of a lot of problems solved) rounding a number to 3 significant figures might produce an incorrect value on my calculator. Will it be fine if I work with more significant figures during the entire question but give my final answer to 3 significant figures? I know that this is a silly question but my school never covered this and I don't want to lose accuracy marks.

How do I prepare for Mathematics HL?

Hey guys, my holidays have started and there's a lot of time left till school starts this September, and I want to be at a level where I am able to do Mathematics HL by then. I've done IGCSE Mathematics Extended with an A* and regularly score perfectly in school tests, but I've been told that it's not a good indication of how well I'd be able to cope with the IB Mathematics HL. So while I have time to prepare, I want to make sure I have the foundation required to be able to do the course. What can I do to prepare, and are there any resources I can make use of? Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I'm taking HL Math because I need it for what I want to study and let me just say a few things: 1. My teacher is horrible. 2. I have always been able to never study for Math and still got solid As. I used to be in an advanced math program when I was younger. Now, Math HL is really hard but I was managing to get by until we got to derivatives (mostly 5s). Now I'm averaging a 3/7 on my last two tests (one was 2/7, the other was 4/7). I understand all the material when we do it in class but the tests are on a whole new level and I get really blocked. When I do manage to understand the material, I lose half my points thanks to methodology. Question is... will I ever im…

Hi Guys, Almost a month remaining and I have absolutely no Idea how to tackle Paper 3 - Calculus Option. I get confused by the type of questions that appear on the paper and sometimes just don't understand them, especially those involving series and tests. I have the Cambridge Option 9 Textbook for Calculus. I just don't know what else to do? Is there any specific source that I could check or see, or something like that which will help me better? Thanks Guys!

Hey guys, I'm generally great with math, understanding it and performing well in my exams. I only ever lose points from carelessness I guess, and usually expect perfect scores. I also got an A* in my IGCSEs. The problem is, a lot of people say that you'd have to have done IGCSE Further Mathematics well to know if you're at the level required for Mathematics HL. Neither my school nor any in the area (as far as I'm aware of) offered this subject, and I'm not familiar with it at all. So my question is, as someone who's only done IGCSE Mathematics (and is good at it), how can I be sure if I can cope with the level of difficulty taught in IB Mathematics HL?

Hi everyone! I've gotten really stuck while trying to do question 7 below. It's actually not the calculus specifically that I'm not getting (the differentiation I found quite easy) but this question is asking me to find the angle between two lines. I know I could do this using vectors, so I tried doing that - but then in trying to find the vectors of the lines I got massively confused, and even when just trying to figure out the equations of lines I ended up with a massive monster of an equation which doesn't really help. So, long story short - could anyone please have a look at this question 7(b)? Any ideas on where to start (or just generally how to solve it) would be…

Hi, I desperately need some help on my HL math IA. I have got a topic, which is great-circle distance, and I don't know what to do next. I have two four-pages long papers on my hands that explain the theory and model of the calculation of great-circle distance, and I think the application of the theory could be calculating the distance between two places on earth, however I am not certain whether I should consider earth as a perfect circle or ellipse in my math IA. I hope I will get insightful advices, thank you.

I took a math EE and I already submitted it to my coordinator about a month ago. For some reason I decided to read it again and I found 2 mistakes. I wrote km^7 instead of km^2 and There was an equation where I had to factor out pi/2 from 3 terms but forgot to multiply one of them with it in the previous equation. I am really worried because I am evaluating the arch length of an ellipse. This is beyond that options and further maths. I have read in the criteria that we should not try to tackle mathematics we can not understand. I am worried that it may seem like that to the examiner because of the second mistake. Hi, I am about to take my subject combinations..i am in the MYP Program and getting 7s in both physics and chemistry but only 6 in math. I heard that HL Math is a killer and takes away most of your time and that it is very difficult to get a good score in...and from my school most of the students are getting 4s and 5s and only one of them managed to pull out a 6. I want to take engineering in the U.S. and after looking at some unis, most of them doesn't need hl math. Hey guys, I really need help with discerning a specific IA topic. I'm worried about the fact that the syllabus has limited me to topics that are exclusive to the HL syllabus... and also about the fact that our class hasn't covered big topics like Vectors (skipped Topic 4 entirely) and Topic 6. I still have a variety of options, but I was wondering if you guys could help me narrow down my topic. My ideas thus far are: 1. I´m currently doing my IA about the growth of Factorials. I´m was very passionate about my investigation until I handed a preview to my teacher. I have just shown the development of the factorials and that there is not a term that defines the growth (such as geometric or arithmetic) but I don´t know the application, and meaning, of what I´ve found nor a good conclusion. I started to question the mathematical complexity in it, as it´s quite simple and I believe that it needs to be more complex. I´m aware factorials are used in combinations and permutations, but I don´t have an "aim" for the factorials in those terms. Does anyone have suggestions on what I can focus my find…

Hi, so i was wondering whether HL math is significantly harder than a levels math? As some people say that the a levels math are somewhat similar to the SL math in IB. If so why do they get considered the same as HL math? I'm planning to take engineering courses so i may have to take HL Math. However it is not my strongest point and therefore thinking of moving into a levels. Thanks!

Hi again! I'm (still) doing complex numbers revision and while that isn't going too badly altogether, I noticed something in the answers to the calculations in polar form: sometimes (seemingly for no reason) 2pi has been subtracted from the argument, whereas sometimes it hasn't been. This seems like a really small and insignificant question, but if complex numbers is one of the topics I can do reasonably well, then I don't want to lose marks on little things like this, so my question is: is there any particular reason why 2pi is subtracted only sometimes? There really isn't anything that I can see to tell the difference between questions! Thank you!
