Oh....Really...Just wondering if anyone could possible help me out with this math essay porfolio thing...My teacher just sorta gave it to us and didn't really explain what to do so basically we're all on our own, trying to figure out what to do. Plus this is only our second year having IB at our school...Anyways I don't really understand what to do for the math research paper. I believe it is type one, but i don't know what that means. I don't want any previous essays, i don't think that's fair, but can anyone just sorta explain it to me? Any help would be much appreciated!!!! Thanks!!!!

Before Half-term, which is in just over 2 weeks time, I have a Maths HL test on Trig1, Quadratics and Functions. At this stage, 1 month and 2 weeks in IB1 should we have covered these topics or are we slightly behind? And also what is the best way to prepare? To plough through the questions in my book and have a look at some past paper questions involving that or maybe question banks? Any minor help will be greatly appreciated. I know this might sound a bit vague but I'd like to know some things before my test.

Hey guys I can't seem to find any Maths HL past papers in French. Maybe I'm not looking properly. The reason for me wanting to see a Maths HL past paper in french is to see if the standard is the same. Is it harder to get a 7 in subjects if they're in English because the number of people taking the IB in English is far higher hence the markschemes are much higher. Is this incorrect? Is it worth looking into?

Hi! I've got the following problem: I do Mathematics Studies SL (I actually was on Standard for the first IB year, but because of bad results I went on Studies - I did not Standard so I was not quite motivated - and I do regret this laziness of mine). However, things changed and I am now keen on going to LSE or some other university with courses that focus on economics and political philosophy or sociology. The problem is that they are really not likely to take me with Mathematics at Studies. My question is: Is there ANY way to have a Mathematics HL 'crash course' or any equivalent? (A levels, anything...) I am not really keen on spending two years just for the Mathematic…

I am starting my IB next year and not exactly sure yet if I should take mathematics in HL or SL. Does anybody know where I could get a list of what I am required to know before starting the HL course? i would be very grateful if somebody sent me a link or something. Thank you

Ok, I'm a big math person, which is probably why I ditched IB math so long ago and just took up individual studies which go way further than any IB math class can offer, but I just can't help but wonder what Math HL is...I mean I had to take IB Calculus, which would be Math SL i guess, becuase i need an IB math, but I really dont get what the class is about. All I heard is that it's not much math into it, mainly theories, and not enough calculus. Anyone in it mind sharing some specific details? i.e. is it Calculus at a higher level? or simply a branch of the history of math?

Hello I just got my first IA called "Investigating ratios of areas and volumes". Although the math looks fairly easy I'm sure it takes a lot more to score decently on it. Can anyone give some random tips about how to maximize marks and what not?

Hi, I'm trying to do the portfolio type 2- flow rate but i'm doing pretty bad and have no idea, what's the difference between the original dataa and the rate of change. Could anyone help me? I would appreciate if someone who already did it could e.g. send it, or at least explain. Thanks

Hey, I'm currently doing my portfolio on the ratios of areas A and B and I've gotten stuck at questions 3 and 4 where they ask you to prove the general formula and find if there are any general formulae for volumes of revolution..Anybody know how to find this? Thanks for your help!

There are 10 seats in a row in a waiting room. There are six people in the room. (a) In how many different ways can they be seated? (b) In the group of six people, there are three sisters who must sit next to each other. In how many different ways can the group be seated? [6] Part A is easy and is solved with 10P6. But part B is the one I'm having a problem with.. our teacher never discussed permutations in class. For part B, the markscheme says this: Total number of ways = 8 x 3! x 7 x 6 x 5 = 10 080 If someone can either explain the total number of ways when some elements are restricted/repeated that'd be great, or if someone can point me out to a good study guide…

for the final maths SL exam (in just over 1 week or watever) do we have to memorize the 68.3-95.4-99.7 rule or can we just know it as the 68-95-99.7 rule, how much accuracy do we need to know this to cuz its not in the data booklet thanks

Is there any rule that states when I should find the 'unbiased' estimate vs. 'biased'? And what is that n/n-1 thing crammed right before the formula? :X

I just realized that my teacher gave me the wrong marking scheme to study with over the weekend. we just finished a second (or third?) round of mocks, and I wanted to go through the most recent for next week. But, oh-behold, he (the teacher) gave me the wrong scheme. I have one for TZ1 and not TZ0. I've already tried looking for it online, but there are a lot of junk sites. If you have an electronic copy, or know where to find one, please post a reply here. Don't forget, the scheme needed is for N08/MATHL/HP2/ENG/TZ0/XX Thanks for any help.

This is from May 2008 paper 1: The random variable T has the probability density function f (t) = pi/4 (cos(pi*t/2)), -1 < t < 1 Find (a) P(T = 0) The answer is zero on the markscheme - the working shows that they've integrated with the limits 0 and 0 to get this... but why? Would you get zero if the question was P(T = 1) ? Is it only because you're trying to find a very specific value/pdf in a cdf function that the probability of getting that very specific number is near to nothing/zero?? Any help would be appreciated!

Hey everyone! Next year I am taking IB Math HL and I'm not really sure what to expect ... I heard its quite the challenege, and people that have gotten high 90's in honors classes are now getting 70's. What makes this class so hard?? This really scared me because I like math - when I'm good at it! This year I took Intermediate Algebra and trigonometry honors, which was an honors course for trig algebra II and some precalc. I received an overall average of 99 this year, but what will happen to me next year? Any input is greatly appreciated =)

These are the portfolio questions 1. Factorize the expression P(n)=n^x-n for x = 2,3,4,5. Determine if the expression is always divisible by the corresponding x. If divisible use mathematical induction to prove your result by showing whether P(k+1)-P(k) is always divisible by x. Using appropriate technology, explore more cases and make a conjecture for when n^x - n is divisible by x. 2. Explain how to obtain the entries in Pascal's triangle...State the relationship between the expression P(k+1)-P(k) and Pascal's traingle. Reconsider your conjecture. Write an expression for the xth row of the Pascal's Triangle. You will have noticed that (x r) = k, k is a natural number. D…

Hi guys, I am sure somebody has done this portfolio and I really badly need help with it. I need to know how to model an equation. I know it is exponential decay but how do you create that equation. and How do you conjecture a model for 12 sided dice with each die showing a 12 is removed everytime they roll and the orignal number of dice are 100. PLEASE HELP I APPREICATE ANY INPUT THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hey Guys, Do you think it'd be possible or how hard do you think it'd be two move up from Maths SL to Maths HL in the second Term (started the IB in September '07) assuming my school would still let me? The HL courses are currently doing Vectors. The thing is, Maths SL is just far too easy for me (always get at least 95% in the topic tests they give us) and my maths teacher said I should be capable for HL easily. I would really like to do straight Economics at a good British university which I would technically need HL for, that's why I'm thinking about moving up. The reason why I didn't take HL in the first place was that I really liked Physics and as I'm German I didn't…

Hey guys, sorry to get off topic but I have a big problem. I recently heard that Further Maths SL is considered more difficult than Maths HL, is this true? How is it possible that a SL course can be harder than an HL course with less classtime? And how can you possibly learn more in the SL class (as I have heard) with so much less class time? Is this just a myth? Thanks

I was wondering if any1 knows the specific difference in standards between A Level Maths and HL MATHS This is because though i have to do HL math for entrance into the economics program i wish to do,i really don't need the extra knowledge of a HL course and i was wondering if any1 knows how much extra work a HL course does as opposed to A Level Maths.Because i would rather do SL Math and save myself from all the brain teasing problems of HL math......
