So I am hoping to take Further Maths HL as one of my IB choices, since I am really interested in the subject itself, and also achieved an outstanding grade in IGCSE Additional Maths. However, my school states that they have no plans to start a Further Maths class. Should I get a self-study/get a tutor, outside of school? or will it be too risky and a waste of time? I am planning to study Actuarial Science in university, and the course requires Maths HL only. So which option would be better? Further Maths HL outside of school, or Maths HL in school?

I never took HL math, but I know that one of the options covered in HL math is on series, which is what I am currently learning in my math course, so I figured I would ask you lovely HL math students. We are at the moment covering convergence tests, and I am having some difficulty in applying the tests we've learned so far to determine if a sequence converges or diverges. The tests we have covered so far are direct comparison, limit comparison, integral test, ratio test, root test, and alternating series test. I know with the direct comparison test one compares the sequence in question with another one and uses the other one to determine whether it converges or not based …

Hey guys, first post on IB survival. Been thinking about what I want to do my exploration into for my coursework. A topic that has come up a few times is computer science and the logic behind that. I was going to try to make a computer write an essay or create something, subsequently fail and explain using maths why a computer can't speculate or "fill in the blanks" to lack of knowing a better word. However I'm worried that this subject may be too vague and I'm worried that I'm going to go real deep into this to realise that I am writing an essay which is irrelevant to maths. Opinions on this would be appreciated, thanks.

Question 1 How would one create 3-D angles in R3? Question 2 Could there be 3-D trigonometric functions (for the tetrahedron) and how do they relate to 3-D angles? Question 3 Are there simple parallels between 3-D angles and 2-D angles? 3-D trig functions and 2-D trig functions? Question 4 Can we create complex angles (imaginary angles, superangles...etc) that can be mapped onto some number larger than 1 or smaller than -1 using the sine or cosine? Question 5 Can the results of question 4, if any, be extended to 3-D angles and 3-D trig functions?

When to use the calculator?

When doing tests or extra credit exercises for my Math class, I often lose points, or end up losing a lot of time because I do not know when (or sometimes how) to use my calculator. The "how" I still have time to learn! The "when", however, is what gets me every time. Naturally, Paper 1 is with no calculator, so that is easy enough. In Paper 2, however, there are sometimes questions that I later find out I could have used my calculator to find the answer to. I have always been used to working out the answer, and using my calculator to a minimum. So it's a bit of a hit to have to look out for when to actually use it. Once, I wasted 5-7 minutes on a question because of it. …

Okay so I am doing my portfolio and it already is 55 pages and I am afraid it could come close to 100 pages(graphs are about half a page). I know this is unusually long, would my marks be deducted for this ? I know there is no criteria for word count or any restrictions on it, but I am scared.

Hi, I'm currently working on the portfolio for patterns in complex numbers (Type I). I've heard that Autograph would be a good choice to use as my graphing software, so I downloaded it. However, I cannot seem to understand how to use it. The interface looks very straightforward to me, but I'm getting confused. How do I plot complex roots on an Argand diagram, join the roots with line segments and calculate its length? So far I've set up a polar 2D graph and added a unit circle using the equation r=1². I've managed to add in the three roots of z³-1=0 using the "enter co-ordinates" function. How do I add line segments from two points? Or am I doing this completely wr…

So, I know that doing the question bank/past paper questions is really good practice for maths - which I should probably be attempting to do more of. But my issue is that I'm concerned that if I just skim over a lot of questions now and then read the mark schemes, then I'm not really 'saving' any proper examination-style questions for later exam preparation. I know that I should probably be practising anyway (and doing it properly without being too hasty in looking up the mark scheme), but should I, at this half-way point in the course, be aiming to look at questions from different non-IB sources as well? My other issue with doing past paper questions is that our teacher …

I'm stuck in this question i really really need to know how to solve it! The sum, Sn, of the first n terms of a geometric sequence, whose nth term is un, is given by Sn = 7^(n -1) -a^(n)/7^n , where a > 0. (a) Find an expression for un. Un= 7^(n -1) -a^(n)/7^n - 7^(n-1) -a^(n-1) /7^n (b) Find the first term and common ratio of the sequence. ???? © Consider the sum to infinity of the sequence. (i) Determine the values of a such that the sum to infinity exists. ???? (ii) Find the sum to infinity when it exists. ???? Thank you in advance!

It's been bugging me for a while but, why is it when you differentiate the area of a circle: πr2 is the perimeter of a circle: 2πr? How come this pattern is not the same in other shapes like squares? When you differentiate the area square: length* width, you do not get the perimeter 2length + 2width. Any suggestion to why this is? My maths teachers, (and other maths teachers) are baffled as well. Thanks in advance

So, I have to finish a practice report on binomial coefficients within a few days. I managed to get halfway through, but I'm hopelessly stuck on this question: There is a formula connecting any (k + 1) successive coefficients in the nth row of the Pascal Triangle with a coefficient in the (n + k)th row. Find this formula. The math doesn't seem that hard, but I think I'm interpreting the question wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have some questions regarding the logistics of Math hl external assesment. First question is in paper 1, can I exceed the given lines? If I exceed the lines, am I penalized for it? Second question is "are we going to be given scratch papers? If we are given scratch papers, can we use pencil in scratch papers? Third question is can I use ruler while doing all papers? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Hello, I am currently in a path to take Math SL (next year I suppose), and I am taking Pre-Cal right now, my junior year. Does the Math HL course assume that you have already taken Pre-Cal sophomore year or is the subject material different from that of a basic SL course? I am interested in a dual major in Economics and Math so I am trying to figure out what will be in my best interest. My other classes include History HL, Economics HL, English HL, Physics SL, and Spanish SL.

Hi guys, I'm currently doing a retake on my Math IA to get me an extra 2 percent on my grade which would get me a 7. Problem being that that means both my IA's have to be at least 18 after moderation, preferably above. At the moment I'm struggling with the type II criteria. I'm working on the IA "Running with Angie and Buddy". For Criteria C for a level 4 and 5 it requires that "The student considers how well the model fits the data." and "The student applies the model to other situations.". For how well the model fits I guess i can comment on its accuracy and limitations, but since there's no hard data to compare to, is there anything else? How can I apply my model to ot…

Hey guys, I have a quite random question. So last week in class we were talking about calculus in my math class and my teacher mentioned that there is a field called fractional calculus (nothing we will cover but it's out there) and it made me wonder... What is one half derivative for example? It doesn't make much sense to me. If you think of derivatives as the slope of the tangent at a certain point, how can you then take half of a slope? And what use is it? I have read about it on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional_calculus but it's still not clear to me. I know this is not a very common toppic but I was just wondering if anyone here knows a little more…

Hi guys! My math IA (type I, teacher said it's about complex numbers) will start September the sixth and I'm a little worried. I've done a practice IA in pre-IB and got 15 points, but that was an SL IA and the teacher was very generous with marks because it was just a practice IA. Are there any tips you could give me so that I could score high (i.e. 17+ )? Are there any common mistakes which I shouldn't make? Any help from an experienced person would be appreciated .

I took IB Math HL Year 1 sophomore year with the plan of taking Year 2 then Further Maths senior year. However i got pretty low grades. aAso we did all the AP Calc material in Year 1 and i took the AP test and did poorly. My guidance counselor says even if I continue with Year 2 this year there is a chance I would have to take HL test after senior year either way. I'm going into the diploma program this (junior) year. I was planning on retaking Year 1 to save all the problems. Is this wise? How bad would it look to universities? (us student)

Hi. We got our first IA tasks in math HL last week, which is "Modelling a functional building" and I have a couple of questions about it. Since i have never done it before and our school isn't very experienced in IB yet, i figured i'd ask for help in here.. 1) Is there a maximum word limit for the task and if yes, what is it? I have about 3000 words already and I think I have barely covered half the task. I'm explaining everything quite thoroughly but I think all I write is quite relevant and without it it would be to superficial or hard to understand. 2) How much do you need to show your calculations? Do you need to show steb-by-step how you substitute, deduce and simpli…

So, we just recently received textbooks (Haese & Harris) for our math HL class, and just flipping through it, I came across what I believe to be a (rather major) inaccuracy with regards to the statement of de Moivre's theorem. The textbook states that Rational being the key word here. However, if we assume that this is true for rational powers then the formula is no longer well-defined. For example, cis(0) = cis(2pi) cis(0)1/2 = cis(2pi)1/2 cis(0/2) = cis(2pi/2) cis(0) = cis(pi) 1 = -1, a contradiction. The books "proof" of de Moivre's theorem for rational powers is as follows: However, this doesn't seem like a valid deduction to make. Sure, it's a useful way of thi…

Hello, I have heard good things about this forum so I decided to check it out:) I have a question about the differences between topics covered in Math HL 1 and 2. Currently, I am a Junior taking Math SL1 but I feel motivated to take both Math HL 1 and 2 my senior year. I am not sure if other IB schools allow double blocking but it basically means you are taking Math HL 1 and 2, separate classes of course. Although this is allowed, few students take this option and from what I hear about Math HL, I don't blame them. But I feel confident and I am upto the task. I have had a consistent 94-95% in SL this year. The thing that worries me though is whether I will be able to mana…

Well, I am taking Math hl now, and I am getting a 75(before scale) this year. I don't like math and I am definitively not a math person but that is also the reason why I didn't put much effort into math this year.... I know we r going to learn calculus next year and I have studied calculus before, so I am wondering whether that would help.. my teacher said, I will need to work harder to get a 4 next year...(I didnt really do my hw this year, which is not... hardworking..) and if I work really really really hard, I might end up like a 6 but of course, I will not have much time to devote in math. So, I am worried. I want to get a 5. I want to get into business and economics…

I'm still 'moderately' new to IB, but have decided that I want to do Maths HL as long as possible. We had our first set of semi-exams a few weeks ago, and we basically did half a Paper 1, and half a Paper 2 for the topics we had done so far. Overall, I was fairly happy with my results because I got an average over 80% and I am using that as proof to myself, and my concerned, non-mathematical parents that I am going to be 'totally fine' in Maths HL for the next 2 years. Basically, my question is how much harder will Maths HL get? Did you experience dramatic improvement in your mark for the Maths HL course as you get through more of it, or did it just start deteriorating b…

I have gotten a pretty solid B for the year and my IAs have been strong, however I feel as though I have not retained a bunch of my knowledge from earlier this year in math. For the past 2-3 weeks we have been doing purely IB practice exams, however some of it seemed so far-fetched from what we have been learning in school I really think that I am screwed. My teacher, despite being a very intelligent man, has difficulties answering many of the later IB problems in the old exams, so I am losing hope in my ability. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for last minute preparations for the exam? Thanks

Hey everyone! So how are all the May 2012 ers feeling?? I'm quite nervous about math, because you never know what you're going to expect! I've done all the past papers since May 2008, all timezones and the option ones do (I'm doing series and DE). Totally hoping for a 7 I've focused most of my previous week on math because its my only exam along with eng paper 1 in first week which you can't really study for anyway. How have the rest of you been preparing? Any good or bad vibes! If we get anything like May 2011 TZ2 paper 2 I will jump to the sky, that paper was so easyyyy.
