Hey there, hope you'll be able to help me clear my mind. I am new to IB and not quite sure what can be considered CAS, of the activities I have been doing lately. So what if I list them up and someone more expert helps me, before I write all reports and then can not submit them? - organization of aglobal concern conference on the theme of migration (could count as C, A or S) - three-days course of wilderness first aid and orientation (Activity) - volounteer working for found-raising organization (cafés, cleaning, farm work) (could count as C, A or S) - writing in the school newspaper on a monthly base (Creativity) - first aid course on weekly base also, I have tw…

Hey! So I was wondering if I could start a blog to record my CAS diaries. Im about to start my second year of IB though, but I wouldnt mind recording all my previous stuff on the blog. I just figured it might make writing my CAS diaries more fun, since I really hate writing mine.

Over the summer I was a teen counselor for a week long 4H camp, which counts towards Creativity, Action, and Service hours. That alone will fulfill a lot of my CAS hours, but I was wondering, do I need to fulfill CAS with a certain number of activities? For example, can all my Creativity hours be from camp, or do I need to get those hours in several different activities? Hope that made sense

Hi, I'm a newbie here that passed the MYP, but I just entered the DP. I am having a lot of trouble finding a suitable CAS Leadership Project. I can't drive yet, and I have been actively searching for ideas, but nothing is helping. I'm hoping to do something that I can do in school, which means that I won't have to go to other places because I can't drive. Any and all ideas would be extremely appreciated.

My question is, if you use managebac to track CAS, you know that we have to satisfy 8 learning outcomes. And that each learning outcome needs to be met 15 times. Do we have to meet each learning outcome 15 times in EVERY outcome? Or can we still pass CAS without satisfying each outcome 15 times?

Hi, I just started doing some volunteer work for CAS. I know I need to provide some kind of proof, so can I just type up a sheet explaining my volunteer work and the number of hours I did and as my supervisor to sign it? Or is there a special form I need to fill out? Or do i just use the 40hours sheet my school has? Thanks!

Hi all, My CAS co-ordinator told my class that CAS counts for 1 of the 3 points which are given on top of the subject scores, however, the IB co-ordinator said that CAS doesn't count for anything besides a pat on the back for achieving... blaa blaa. Anyways, I was just wondering what is the right one? Does CAS count for anything or not. Thank you. Remeber IB: intelligent bull****ters

So I started IB in February this year, so its been about... Half a year since I've started. I've been doing most of my CAS regularly, but I've missed a few reflections. We've been advised to do at least one every month, but there are times when I've done 2 in one month and none in the month after, but then started again the following month. Also, there have been problems with my long-term project which involves visiting an elderly person every week. She's been real sick these past few months so I haven't been able to do anything. i'm getting paranoid about all this as I heard that so many people fail IB because of CAS! Does anyone know what it actually takes to fail…

My school co-ordinator has not explained thoroughly what exactly is required now to satisfy the CAS component. From what I understand, there used to be a 150 hours requirement that all candidates had to complete, however this had been changed a few sessions back. Can somebody tell me what exactly has to be fulfilled to complete CAS?

Alright so. I'll be a junior this fall (Yeah. Yikes.) and though I understand the CAS system fairly well, there is one thing that I do not understand. This summer I am required to write an outline (CAS Proposal) for what I plan on doing to complete all my hours over the next 18 months. The syllabus states that the outline must be in a narrative form, and should answer these four questions for each activity- 1.How is this activity a personal challenge? 2.How will this activity extend you? 3.What personal learning will this activity offer you? 4.Which learning outcomes will you achieve during this activity? Alright so my questions are as follows- What the heck is a narrati…

A language as Creativity

Due to that I'm not continuing my foreign language from earlier school years as an IB subject, I thought about taking it through Creativity instead. However I'm not sure about the practical matters when it comes to taking a language as CAS. For instance, as you need someone to sign what you have done, I guess you couldn't learn it just by yourself through reading and writing and so on. Does anyone have any experience on this? Obviously I want to learn the language as efficient as possible, but it still needs to be counted as CAS (most of it, anyway). Thank you for your help.

I've just finished my first year of IB and I've done quite a lot for CAS, including MUN, volleyball, basketball, an orphanage club, a poster project, and some contribution in other events. During summer I'd teach English and get in a cooking class. But I'm losing track of what I've done, cause I didn't really record anything properly. No reflections or anything...Now it's summer and I gotta reorganize, but I don't really know how to... Any suggestions? How do you guys keep track of what you've done? Do you guys have a blog for it? Or like a scrapbook or something?

Hey all, I'm going to a leadership conference run by the American Legion in Kansas this next week. The conference basically simulates a political environment in which people run for certain governmental roles, etc. There's also a talent show involved, but the program as a whole revolves around the government idea. My question is, how could I sign this up for CAS hours? As far as I can tell it doesn't fit under any of the three descriptors, but I can't just pass this up as an opportunity to get them hours; it's just too enriching.

Heya Not sure where to put this, but there's a small publishing company which aims to publish unsolicited manuscripts. Unfortunately, due to personal problems, they are unable to do so and will soon be looking for volunteers. Their problem is that they're not sure where to find the volunteers. I suggested that some of you guys might be interested because it counts a lot towards Service (volunteering), Action (most likely reading manuscripts, poetry, etc) and IB students would be most reliable because, let's face it, all IBers need as many hours as possible. In terms of evidence, you could use stuff like e-mails or the company will send you a letter thanking you for your s…

Hey people! So I have been in this program that is geared towards exposing public school to theater. I had to apply for the porgram and I got in! So we get assigned a mentor and he takes us to 6 Broadway plays, one each month. After we Broadway play we have a 2 hour discussion and then we write a journal enrty, which we have to submit to the program. It's called Theater Development Funds (TDF) Open Doors program. Here's a link for more information, its not a long article: My link Do you guys think this counts as CAS hours? I think it does but the teacher that comes with us to the meetings and plays says that it doesn't. Whenever I ask her why,she just says that it doesn…

Hey guys, I currently lack of action activities (the "A" in CAS). The only activity I do for action is going to the gym every week. But I'm asked to write regular journal on the activity. I have no idea what I should write, since I do exactly the same things everytime I go to the gym, while I can't write 10 identical journal entries! Any suggestion? Also, can anybody help me come up with any other activity that belongs to the Action part in CAS? I can't join any team in school, since I pathetically suck at every sport and nobody wants me to join the teams . Thanks you guy a lot

This has been frustrating me ever since term started ending. I want to take up new CAS activities (join an orchestra) but I like my other activities and don't want to drop them. Or rather, some have been progressing really well and I think dropping them would be a waste. The thing is if i take everything i like up, i won't be able to cope. I know i wont have problems meeting the required hours, i do all of my CAS activities because they are very rewarding and interesting. all of them How many activities do you guys usually take on at the same time? Need advice on how to choose my CAS activities!

Okay, so I have tons of creative and service hours but I have zero action hours. I understand the point of service and creativity and I understand how they can be combined and stuff but what does action mean exactly? If I don't do sports what can I do? i.e. If I run a poetry program (which I do as creativity and service b/c it's free and i'm helping kids get better with their creative side) what can I add as action? Would action be me performing the poems? Bringing them to writing conventions? Just showing up to the meetings and talking and writing? So if anybody could please help me out by telling me what action means according to the baove activity and what it means i…

Do you like CAS? 1 2 3 4 5

Personally, I despise CAS . First and foremost, it's insane to require 150 (or, I've heard, even more than that for some schools!) hours of CAS activities on top of all the more serious/important aspects of IB, such as the extended essay, exams, or internal assessments. Also, I oppose CAS to some extent on a matter of principle... I got involved in IB because I wanted a good academic challenge, and these CAS activities have nothing to do with that. The one and only kind thing I have to say about CAS is the fact that it provided some good material to write college application essays.

So my CAS Portfolio is due tomorrow and I'm still unsure of how to put it all together or what to write in the essay. I can't find a good guide on how to do this, so I'm asking you guys. I have all of the self-evaluation forms, the final summary, and the page with all the signatures on it done, but I still need the essay (which I'm not sure how to do). Is there anything else I need for it?

So, at our school, the CAS forms consist of Form A (which is just the activity/supervisor/hours) Form B (proposal) Form C (Daily log of learning outcomes) Form D1 and D2 (which is basically the reflection after the activity is completed). The main issue I have is Form C, which is a daily account of what we did/what we learned etc. I'm in the Student Council and I have a meeting twice every week. My CAS coordinator said I could just log every week for that activity, but almost a year would have gone by and I have done absolutely zero daily logs. So i was wondering if that will actually affect my CAS journal? I mean, what does the IB look at? and do ALL Cas journals go to …

Alrighty, so my CAS reflective essay is due next Monday, but I'm a bit unsure of what to write! Our coordinator barely accepts anything as CAS. Also, from the way he explains things, I don't really know what I'm supposed to do. For example, he says the creativity hours can be earned through using an art to better the community, or by planning other CAS activities (I've heard that some kids in other schools don't need to have it related to the community; I know some people who got hours for practising an instrument, but our coordinator won't allow this). Thing is, when I tried to log the hours that I spent doing marching band, he refused them because it's a school activity (even though I didn't get a grade for it). He also tried explaining to me that any given CAS p…

I know that IB wants the CAS hours to be spread out equaly between service comunity and action, 50/50/50, but, I heard that also it has to be equal between the years (75 in year 1 and 75 in year 2) and between the semesters, and that if its not, you might not get your diploma. Is this true?

Hey so I moved to Canada from the UK late in the year and have now only been told whilst in Grade 11 that I need to complete the 150 hours with very little guidance. Hi, I am sure all of us stuggle with the CAS hours and our school requires us to do an international service project. We have been doing things like Operation Smile dinners and such. However currently with the budget cuts, there is little to no funding available for IB anymore in my school. How do you all manage with the money that has to go into the service projects? Does everyone always dig in their pockets and donate money? Does anyone have any ideas? It is difficult for our school to do fundraisers just for IB because we are constantly battling with AP. The AP group will always bring up that we are becoming "an elite" group and therefore many ideas do not pass. Thank…

Well, my CAS coordinator is annoyed with me because I was meant to hand in my log about six weeks ago but haven't yet done it. The CAS itself is not so bad; I have over 50 hours in about 5 months and a pretty definite 5 hours coming in per week. What do you have to do at CAS? Do you have to search your own work or does the school help you? And how difficult is it to find something? I think, if I go abroad to do my IB it will be more difficult to find something. Because my English wouldn't be as well as the English from the other students and everything is new there.

I don't know if it has been asked yet, I've seen a lot of ~Help me get Action~ topics, but not many of service. I'm already up till 25 hours, and I'm organizing a pretty big concert with 15 bands including 4 pretty famous Indonesian bands with sponsors and things like that to raise money for the people that can't send their children to school here. Our max hour cap is 20, so that will bring me up to 45 hours... our needed is 50, so I need 5 more. I don't really like to teach anyone anything, 'cause frantically, I'm not good at it. (First time I used frantically ) I'm already in Habitat for Humanity, but like I said, max is 20 hours Any ideas please?
