There's some confusion at my school, as it's our first year doing it. Is the CAS period from the summer before IB1 to Spring of IB2? or is it from September IB1 to April IB2? Thanks

I have an interest in both of these, but only time for one. Which do you think I should do? Breakdancing seems more..legit, as you go to certain dancing schools to learn. and these two can both count towards Creativity, as I haven't done both before, and action, right? In your opinion, which seems better? Thanks

I had a few ideas of things I'd like to do as well as things I'm going to be doing this year and I was wondering if any of them might count for CAS: - I'm in my school's book club, and we discuss a book each month. Could this count for creativity? - Could hikes with Environmental Club count for active? - I know that activities advocating a religion don't count (such as teaching religious education at my church), but could making the lessons plans for this count for creativity, or is any religious-related activity not allowed? - Learning an instrument - would this be allowed for creativity, if it was outside of school? - If I took a language course at a college over the s…

My friend wanted to tutor me Math and teach me piano so she could get service hours, but my CAS coordinator said we can't...He said the IBO won't allow it, and I've heard of other people doing it in other schools. I'm just wondering if anybody here has done this for service.

Hey guys, I'm conducting a meeting at school tomorrow for the Diploma juniors about the Major Project we have to do next year. I'm going to have some seniors on hand so they can describe what they did for their projects and help give some examples/ideas. But can anyone give some background information on the Major Project that you feel is important to know? I'd like to present some basic facts and background and provide them with a good, understandable introduction to it. Thanks SO much! =D

At my school, we have 20 hours of CAS due on Wednesday of this week. I haven't covered action (the 'A' in CAS) or ethics (#7 of learning outcomes). I haven't started anything yet. Advice please! I've been taking ballet class (4 classes a week) since January. The CAS advisor says I can't use this for action unless I develop some kind of program that I teach to the class or something to that end. Never mind her, is there any way I could write taking ballet class up on the CAS forms to make her accept it for action? As for the ethics, she said I could do an additional 5-hour project on just ethics. Any ideas for this that I could get done before Wednesday? Or a 20 hour proj…

Private Pilot's License

Hey, I started taking lessons to obtain my private pilot's license not too long ago. So far, it is only theoretical (class-room learning), so I was wondering what you guys thought of this. Does it count as creativity or not? My coordinator says "Hmmm I don't know" but then I reminded her of how she allowed people to learn how to play the flute for CAS. Essentially, isn't learning the flute the same as learning how to fly? You are getting an experience and learning a new skill. Any input would be great! Thanks

Is it ok to finish the service hours with one or two things that i do continuously? Or would it be better to do diverse short-term services? I have lots of service hours already (Grade 11) and it will soon be over the expected amount but the problem is that I kinda feel worried that my service wasnt diverse enough because i only did 2 kinds In a way, it sounds better to stick to some things and do them continuously and in a way, it sounds better to venture diverse service activities what do u think is better?

Our CAS coordinator (and I think also the IBO) says that you should write down every single CAS activity you do on your CAS diary. Does somebody actually do that? In our cases, we mostly have too many hours (over hundred, especially those who play instruments) and therefore just don't write some down. It would take ages to keep track of them all (it would not be a diary, but a book) and we probably are too lazy to do that... Are there any other people doing the same thing like we do? Or is it not really allowed at all to not note down your CAS activities? I mean we are at least not falsifying them...

Okay, it's nearing the time for CAS to be handed in and I'm going to try and finish most of it within the next week or so. I just wanted to ask what kind of stuff needs to be put into the folders, as our school hasn't helped out much.. As far as I know, we basically need to do a small-ish report on each project (does that include projects which only give you a few hours, or is it just for the big ones?), get signatures from supervisors and provide some other media related to the projects (so photos, sheet music for musical activities, etc). Do we need to log all of the dates on which we did the activities? And is there anything else I've missed?

I have just finished CAS, however, my IB Coordinator has just informed me that my activity supervisor must be affiliated with an organization. I had a different IBC last year and he told me that does not need to be the case. As an example, I taught piano for free to another student at my school. I documented the hours, however, my current IBC has told me that I can not count the hours because the activity supervisor (her parent) is not affiliated with any organization. But when I asked my previous IBC last year about starting this activity, he said that it would be fine. So I'm wondering, who is right?

Hello all, I was wondering as to whether any one had any ideas for a form of 'action'- I am awfully uncoordinated, I couldn't play for a team (oh, I tried- but it went dreadfully)...hence, I wondering if there is anything aside from engaging in some form of physical activity that could count for action. Each time I speak to my coordinator she merely suggests playing a sport Thank- you, Pathos

I was talking to my CAS advisor about how I could get some more Action hours since my school wants us to have 50 hours in each category. I already have all of the Creative hours I need from theatre/drama and all of the Service hours I need from a number of various activities, but I don't play any sports so I'm having trouble getting Action hours! I asked her if activities like rock climbing, bike riding, weight lifting, etc. would count as Action hours, and after talking with our school's IB Coordinator she determined that these hours would only count if they were geared towards bettering the world in some way, such as doing a walk-a-thon to benefit cancer research or…

Hey, So, I need to find ways to get some more creativity. I have some for guitar playing, but it's just not enough. Sooo.. Anyone have any ideas for activities that aren't 'artsy' in the traditional sense (I don't like painting, drawing etc. It's just not me)? Something that might be offered as a weekend camp sort of thing would be great. I've looked at first aid courses, but I can't seem to find any offered near me. Anyone?

Hello fellow sufferers, Yesterday I started to think of a good activity part for my CAS and found skateboarding. As to learn to skateboard. I also sent an email to my coordinator to ask if it is ok ? She replied that no because the public wont benefit from it... But to be honest I know 3 guys who do gym for activity and cannot find any benefit for the society from it. How could i make her understand that this is the equivalent to or even better than the gym? I myself think that this learning more benefital to me than going to gym... Thank in advance for your advice.

I participated on an international work camp a few weeks ago. This, if anything, is an excellent way of getting those precious CAS hours. Here's how it works (or at least worked with my school) So I listed myself as a volunteer through an agency (I would post a link here but the agency is Finnish so it would probably help only small minority of you guys )- The fee for this was about 120 €. Then I was sent on a voluntary work camp in Germany (yeah, I was on an international work camp in Germany, laugh it up...). I went on this gorgeous little island called the Sylt. My work consisted mainly of getting rid of harmful plants, putting up fences, digging, etc. Now, how is the …

So I've left CAS to the last minute. The due date for all evalutations and the essay etc is in 8 days. And I have 18 service hours to do. I talked to my coordinator..who didn't suggest anything realistic. I'm going to do some beach cleanups but that'll only get a few hours, won't even get me down to 10 probably. My supervisor for things like this will probably be my dad. Any other ideas? I just want easy things that I can do by myself, like beach cleanups.

Hi there, ;] There's a problem that bugs me all the time: action hours. Throughout the previous year this section was the one containing the smallest amount of hours (while creativity and service had more than enough). So, I'm asking for your help here. What kind of good and recognised activities are known to earn plenty of cas hours every month? Just brainstorm them randomly. ;]

I am starting the IB in September '09 and I recently inquired about the IB to a friend of mine. She said that the IB CAS system had changed for newcomers that, instead of the hours system, it has now installed a 'quality over quantity' system which I'm not sure is correct?! If so, could someone please explain this to me?!

Hey everyone. OK, so my school is requiring us to turn in 15 hours of CAS by next month. I am a junior (11th grade) by the way. Anyways, I have done NOTHING in the way of creativity, action, or service. I'm going to talk to the coordinator tomorrow, but I need some questions answered. -We are fostering some stray kittens right now and are trying to find homes for them. We build robots and try to make them go through mazes and stuff in the class. It is a week long class, 12 total hours. Hi guys, Does anyone want to get CAS hours, testimonials and certificates ? I am looking for people who would like to be in the main committee in charge of organizing the "Asian Pacific Wheelchair Basketball League". There are 2 types of volunteers I would like to look for : 1. Main committee members : students who are living in Singapore (because the event will take place in Singapore) 2. Communicators of international teams : students from any country which can help contacting their country's Wheelchair basketball association and get them involved in this League. The event will take place in September, in Singapore. So guys, anyone interested ?

After reading around on this forum and several other websites, I've found that I believe that my school is too harsh about the criteria for CAS. Our adviser tells us that CAS cannot benefit ourselves in any way whatsoever, so it is basically all service, and you have to fit helping people into the creativity and action. Our sports, drama, and band/colorguard each get a maximum of 20 hours over the two years (for each one). For mine, I used community theater shows for creativity, tutoring elementary students for service, and basically...nothing for action. I did a charity walk via National Honor Society, but so far that's all I have. I know they redid the CAS requirements…

So here's the thing, in my school I practice soccer, volleyball and basketball but as I only practice but refuse to play matches, they say it does not count as CAS (only people in the team can use matches as CAS, but not practice)... But the thing is, if I do a sport outside school, can it be considered action hours? I've been practicing parkour (with an stablished group that has someone in charge, not just random friends fooling around) so I wanted to know if I could use that for extra CAS hours
