How's everyone doing on their CAS? What activiities does your school offer (especially for Service) For Service: my school has a Cambodia trip with this ngo called hope international. obviously you have to pay but i went last year and its defenitely a trip that changed my life. we stayed in a little town called pursat, between pnom penh and the famous ankor wat (cant spell) and we help build wells and schools. my whole sense perseption (tok word there) changed, and i see the world in a completely different view - however cliche that sounds. im glad that i did ib,a nd that cas exists. but i know a lot of people out there abo****ely despises cas. tell me your opinions wha…
The answer to this question comes down to one thing - who exactly is it that decides what counts for CAS??
Answer: your CAS Co-ordinator!
Not the IBO, not people here, not other schools and other CAS Co-ordinators, not your friends or your teachers... the individual person in charge of CAS at your school. You'd be amazed how much this varies between schools - some schools are happy for you to write online blogs and play videogames, whereas other schools would laugh in your face if you suggested those things as CAS. Some of you may even be laughing now - but if you could get CAS for those things, wouldn't you?
So, if you want to be really 100% sure that an a…

Hey guys, My school is terrible at explaining the way CAS works, and I'll be starting IB this year (in summer at the moment). I have heard that in order to "fulfill" CAS, you basically have to tick off objectives, which are given by the school and vary by institution? Can someone give me a basic explanation on how CAS works, and how not to fail it? Sorry for being a noob, Thanks!
So wondering what else I could do in order to do some creativity this year, i thought of creating a blog in which i review at least one book or film per week. Do you think this is a good idea? What kind of things would you be interested in reading in this sort of blog? Please comment, it would be really helpful to see what you guys would want to read in order to create a successful blog.
I asked my CAS coordinator if it were possible to learn how to create web pages for creativity and she said it was fine. So I started looking for websites where I could learn it or books so i could teach the basics myself. Does anyone know any good places for learning HTML and such? Just need the basic tools so i can create a website at the end for a small side project. EDIT: Does anyone know Sams Teach Yourself HTML and CSS in 24 Hours? Apparently it is quite good for beginners.
I plan on teaching my friends Japanese as my service. But my school said that I can't have friends as my target community, and that it's because the IB said so. However, I checked the CAS guide and couldn't find this information. Can anybody confirm if doing service for your friends is not an appropriate service?
I have done the following CAS activities:}
Organising a bake sale with a classmate and gave the money to a charity (Creativity?, Service)
Developing a revision app with a friend (Creativity, Service)
Kick Boxing (activity)
I will attend the European Youth Parliament where we will do some activities, have a debate and get a certificate for participation (no idea)
Does going to the gym count?
During IB Forum my physics class and i travelled around the country collecting soil and sending to a radioactivity factory or something like that. We wanted to check how radioactive our s…
Hello everyone! I have been offered a part-time position at a library, with about 8-10 hours a week. I would absolutely love to work there and it is a good way to earn some money on the side. Also, I think it would be good experience for me as I have not had a paid job before. The problem is that I am very involved with other extra-curricular activities and as I am in my first year of the IB Diploma Program , I want to be able to focus on my studies and get high marks. Since I can't do it all, either the job goes or some extra-curricular activities. Therefore, I am thinking of declining the job offer unless it can count for CAS hours or if it is beneficial for m…
I did an activity (Creating art for hospice patients), but I'm not exactly sure what to put it under? Anyone have any idea? I think it might go under ethics but I'm not sure. What kind of activities go under ethics anyways?
Hello, I'm Katinka, and my lifelong dream has been to get in to Cambridge Medical School. Any ideas, tips or tricks, which I could keep in mind for when I take the IB course?
Any CAS ideas, which you would recommended I take?
Thank you for the help!
hi, im currently in MYP5 and a bit confused about cas. i would like it if someone could explain it with examples, and support it with their own experiences. i could google it, but i want to go deeper than the surface definition. thanks <3
I'm starting the IB in a month and preparing all I can. I've been wondering if working for FFF would count as Service? By that I don't mean strikes and not going to school:). I mean serious work on preparing projects, such as mediating communication between the country where I'm going to study and my native country, or working on design projects for the organisation (I'm going to do Visual Arts HL).
Conversation with my friend: Him: Would some kind of video game count as creative? Me:Look it up. I doubt it. Him: What seriously? That's dumb, video games can be really creative Me: Yes, the VIDEO game is creative, not you when you're playing it. Whoever made the game could have qualified for the hours, but not you. It's not that dumb Him: Lol seriously though, you can create many things in video games. Depending on the game. Some are just applications that you can use as your own sandbox. Help me settle this argument? Cause frankly I'm not sure anymore, but still leaning towards it not qualifying.
the title already suggests quite well what my question is. I am planning to start the IBDP next year. So basically, I participate in several math competitions. I spend a lot of time preparing and I get decent results on a national level as well. So it would be quite a pity if that wouldn't count... Yes, I know, I'm going to ask my CAS coordinator, but maybe there is somebody here who has similar experience or advice. Do I really have to look for "classical ones" like tutoring/creating a blog?
Thanks in advance, if you help me!
I am taking IB next year, and I'm very interested in video games in general.
I've been watching a lot of speedruns recently and must say that I really got interested in getting into the speedrunning scene, thus comes my question:
Can one speedrun games on CAS? Say f.ex. if my goal would be to LEARN and then SPEEDRUN a game called Star Wars: Jedi Knight Jedi Academy.
Was very surprised that I couldn't find any existing topics about speedrunning games here or by using google.
Thanks in advance,
Hi, so just like what the title says, can I leave CAS? I know that people who are taking Diploma have to take it but I'm only taking certificate. I thought CAS was gonna be moderate difficulty or something but just now realized its not. You have to do activities and a really big project. I don't think I'm even ready to do those and I get overwhelmed just thinking of trying to finish my CAS activities and project. I'm hoping to just do the senior project. Thanks for any info you guys can give me.
The IB website states the 'creativity' component for CAS is "arts, or any other experience that involve creative thinking."
Has anyone done this or known people who used YouTube as a platform for "creativity" in the IB? If yes, what kind of videos did you or those you've known post? Is it a good idea?
Hi guys i need a bit of help since I'm new to the whole CAS experience thing. Since COVID-19 I can't really do much activity for my CAS experience, so I was wondering if working out at home counts as an experience. If so, how can I get a supervisor my family isn't counted as one. Can I get a PE teacher as a supervisor by just taking pictures of my smart watch after the workout as proof?
So my CAS project is to start a café within my school. I would essentially be creating a mini business where students and faculty are customers. However, I cannot simply run the business for free, people would have to pay in order for the business to stay running. From the profits, some of it will be used to maintain the café and the rest will be used for various causes. Another factor of the project is to provide work experience to expat students, the majority demographic in the school (in an underdeveloped country where it is uncommon for expat children to be able to find part time jobs). This is part of the service, a service to my school's community, in order for more…
Hi! I’m an IB student who has decided to create a website as a CAS project. With the website, I hope to create posts based off of the experiences of other IB students and how they are dealing with the social distancing period due to Covid-19. Most importantly, I would like to post different ways for people to spend their time, inspired by you or other IB student’s methods. Anything from exercises, book recommendations, art, movie recommendations, recipes, painting/drawings or anything that you have done throughout your experience during the pandemic. Would you be willing to participate by simply sharing any of your hobbies with me?
To keep confidentiality and securit…
Hey guys, I had a quick question -- I have recently heard that students cannot have any gaps in their CAS timeline. In other words, I heard that we are expected to have at least one ongoing CAS experience throughout all of Grade 11 and 12. Is this true?
2020-2021 CAS Guide for Juniors
Meet the Authors
Annessa- Hi, I’m Annessa, a class of 2020 IB senior. I enjoy spending time with my friends and generally having fun. I hope this guide is helpful and clears some confusion regarding CAS.
Colton- Hi guys! I’m a class of 2020 senior and IB candidate. Some fun little things to note about me: I love the outdoors, to shop, and to read, so that is where most of my CAS time is directed. I hope that in reading some of our suggestions you will be able to learn a little!

What is CAS?
If I did laboratory work for a project outside school, does that count as action? It lasted 10 hours each weekend for 6 weeks, though I know that CAS is about learning outcomes and not hours anymore. For context, some other people in my school have gotten away with things like food donation drives as action
Hello, fellow IB students! How are you doing during your quarantine time and social distancing?
Recently my CAS adviser told me that even if we are at quarantine, it should not be an excuse for not doing Activity and Service in CAS. I know doing Activity and creativity is quite much simple rather than doing Service, since at this state of circumstances I'm not allowed to go outside. So, I wonder if anyone from other IB schools around the world has the same struggle and is trying to find possible Service ideas for CAS.
Any ideas and help will be appreciated! Stay safe! 🗿
I'm a first year IB student. I realized that we have do this CAS thing for a total of 150 hours, so I signed up for some activities both in school and out of school. Our CAS coordinator told us to submit all the reflections on the CAS activities on a website called ManageBac and asked us to write a reflection on every 10 hours of activities completed. However, I'm not sure what I should include in my reflections. For example, if I practice guitar at home for 10 hours per week, does that mean I have to do a reflection on what I practiced during those 10 hours per week to qualify for my Creativity hours? Also, is there a certain format we can follow to write our reflections…
I am a fairly new IB student. I finished Pre-IB last year, and am in second month of Grade 11 IB. We just got Managebac accounts and have been encouraged to start logging CAS, but I'm not sure how. I can find the section that needs to be filled out for different activities, but I don't know how to tag things. I volunteer twice a week, and instead of having to log each session individually --annoying my supervisor constantly with repeated notifications-- I was wondering if there was a way to log something as an ongoing activity instead...?
There's probably a really simple solution, but I appreciate any help you can offer.
I'm quite confused with something our CAS coordinator recently told us about. He said we need to complete a month long project to pass CAS and that it NEEDS to be done during the second year. I've tried searching on google to see if this is actually something that needs to be done or he's just making this up to make us do more CAS hours. But i've found nothing. Did you have to do this?
I hope you can answer with your own experiences
So for my CAS project, my friend and I are creating a Pen Pal program with our Diploma and Middle Years Program (we are mainly focusing on DP). We originally had a school in Italy lined up to work with us, but they ended up flaking last minute. If anyone is interested in being a Pen Pal, or if you know kids at your school who may be interested please respond. The only requirement is that your school is outside of the US and Canada.
Thanks a bunch
I’m starting IBY1 next year and I’ve started thinking of some CAS ideas. Does anyone know if playing an instrument (as a self-taught, I’m not going to attend any extra classes) can count for CAS?
Thank you for the answers :)
I am starting IB next year and as a typical student I am thinking what to do for my CAS. I really love reading and I was wondering if I could start writing a book blog. I don't really understand CAS yet, so I don't know if it could work. How could I cover the activity part?
I am an eleventh grader and just wanted to ask about what all should I include in my CAS reflection for an activity like learning how to play the electric guitar. I am very confused and any guidance would be very helpful!
I am about to begin my IB next week and I Just wanted to know. I make art youtube videos, which means my face is not in the video. I know that Youtube videos counts as cas and I make the art videos, to teach people how I do my arts. But will it count as cas even though gave around 5 views only? And will they accept it even though I don't put my face in it?
The type of video my make:
I am on my vacation right now and planning my CAS project with my friend, but not really sure which one I should do. One of the ideas that I came up with is organizing a group of people to pick up trash and clean the streets, or maybe other places such as parks and beaches. We will be doing this for about a month and there will be 5-6 people who would join this project. Would this be appropriate for my CAS project??
If not, I want you guys to give me some good ideas.
I am on vacation during the summer in Europe and I haven't come up with a CAS project yet. (I'm not sure if we are supposed to have one but I think it would be good to do it anyway). Is doing a travel vlog with my family considered a "Creative" CAS project? I'm not sure it would be approved.
