How's everyone doing on their CAS? What activiities does your school offer (especially for Service) For Service: my school has a Cambodia trip with this ngo called hope international. obviously you have to pay but i went last year and its defenitely a trip that changed my life. we stayed in a little town called pursat, between pnom penh and the famous ankor wat (cant spell) and we help build wells and schools. my whole sense perseption (tok word there) changed, and i see the world in a completely different view - however cliche that sounds. im glad that i did ib,a nd that cas exists. but i know a lot of people out there abo****ely despises cas. tell me your opinions wha…

The answer to this question comes down to one thing - who exactly is it that decides what counts for CAS?? Answer: your CAS Co-ordinator! Not the IBO, not people here, not other schools and other CAS Co-ordinators, not your friends or your teachers... the individual person in charge of CAS at your school. You'd be amazed how much this varies between schools - some schools are happy for you to write online blogs and play videogames, whereas other schools would laugh in your face if you suggested those things as CAS. Some of you may even be laughing now - but if you could get CAS for those things, wouldn't you? So, if you want to be really 100% sure that an a…

Hey everyone, I am taking IB next year, and I'm very interested in video games in general. I've been watching a lot of speedruns recently and must say that I really got interested in getting into the speedrunning scene, thus comes my question: Can one speedrun games on CAS? Say f.ex. if my goal would be to LEARN and then SPEEDRUN a game called Star Wars: Jedi Knight Jedi Academy. Was very surprised that I couldn't find any existing topics about speedrunning games here or by using google. Thanks in advance, ~rspic

Hi, so just like what the title says, can I leave CAS? I know that people who are taking Diploma have to take it but I'm only taking certificate. I thought CAS was gonna be moderate difficulty or something but just now realized its not. You have to do activities and a really big project. I don't think I'm even ready to do those and I get overwhelmed just thinking of trying to finish my CAS activities and project. I'm hoping to just do the senior project. Thanks for any info you guys can give me.

Conversation with my friend: Him: Would some kind of video game count as creative? Me:Look it up. I doubt it. Him: What seriously? That's dumb, video games can be really creative Me: Yes, the VIDEO game is creative, not you when you're playing it. Whoever made the game could have qualified for the hours, but not you. It's not that dumb Him: Lol seriously though, you can create many things in video games. Depending on the game. Some are just applications that you can use as your own sandbox. Help me settle this argument? Cause frankly I'm not sure anymore, but still leaning towards it not qualifying.

The IB website states the 'creativity' component for CAS is "arts, or any other experience that involve creative thinking." Has anyone done this or known people who used YouTube as a platform for "creativity" in the IB? If yes, what kind of videos did you or those you've known post? Is it a good idea?

Hi guys i need a bit of help since I'm new to the whole CAS experience thing. Since COVID-19 I can't really do much activity for my CAS experience, so I was wondering if working out at home counts as an experience. If so, how can I get a supervisor my family isn't counted as one. Can I get a PE teacher as a supervisor by just taking pictures of my smart watch after the workout as proof?

So my CAS project is to start a café within my school. I would essentially be creating a mini business where students and faculty are customers. However, I cannot simply run the business for free, people would have to pay in order for the business to stay running. From the profits, some of it will be used to maintain the café and the rest will be used for various causes. Another factor of the project is to provide work experience to expat students, the majority demographic in the school (in an underdeveloped country where it is uncommon for expat children to be able to find part time jobs). This is part of the service, a service to my school's community, in order for more…

Hi! I’m an IB student who has decided to create a website as a CAS project. With the website, I hope to create posts based off of the experiences of other IB students and how they are dealing with the social distancing period due to Covid-19. Most importantly, I would like to post different ways for people to spend their time, inspired by you or other IB student’s methods. Anything from exercises, book recommendations, art, movie recommendations, recipes, painting/drawings or anything that you have done throughout your experience during the pandemic. Would you be willing to participate by simply sharing any of your hobbies with me? To keep confidentiality and securit…

If I did laboratory work for a project outside school, does that count as action? It lasted 10 hours each weekend for 6 weeks, though I know that CAS is about learning outcomes and not hours anymore. For context, some other people in my school have gotten away with things like food donation drives as action

Hello, fellow IB students! How are you doing during your quarantine time and social distancing? Recently my CAS adviser told me that even if we are at quarantine, it should not be an excuse for not doing Activity and Service in CAS. I know doing Activity and creativity is quite much simple rather than doing Service, since at this state of circumstances I'm not allowed to go outside. So, I wonder if anyone from other IB schools around the world has the same struggle and is trying to find possible Service ideas for CAS. Any ideas and help will be appreciated! Stay safe! 🗿

I'm a first year IB student. I realized that we have do this CAS thing for a total of 150 hours, so I signed up for some activities both in school and out of school. Our CAS coordinator told us to submit all the reflections on the CAS activities on a website called ManageBac and asked us to write a reflection on every 10 hours of activities completed. However, I'm not sure what I should include in my reflections. For example, if I practice guitar at home for 10 hours per week, does that mean I have to do a reflection on what I practiced during those 10 hours per week to qualify for my Creativity hours? Also, is there a certain format we can follow to write our reflections…

Hey So wondering what else I could do in order to do some creativity this year, i thought of creating a blog in which i review at least one book or film per week. Do you think this is a good idea? What kind of things would you be interested in reading in this sort of blog? Please comment, it would be really helpful to see what you guys would want to read in order to create a successful blog.

Hi! I am a fairly new IB student. I finished Pre-IB last year, and am in second month of Grade 11 IB. We just got Managebac accounts and have been encouraged to start logging CAS, but I'm not sure how. I can find the section that needs to be filled out for different activities, but I don't know how to tag things. I volunteer twice a week, and instead of having to log each session individually --annoying my supervisor constantly with repeated notifications-- I was wondering if there was a way to log something as an ongoing activity instead...? There's probably a really simple solution, but I appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm quite confused with something our CAS coordinator recently told us about. He said we need to complete a month long project to pass CAS and that it NEEDS to be done during the second year. I've tried searching on google to see if this is actually something that needs to be done or he's just making this up to make us do more CAS hours. But i've found nothing. Did you have to do this? I hope you can answer with your own experiences

So for my CAS project, my friend and I are creating a Pen Pal program with our Diploma and Middle Years Program (we are mainly focusing on DP). We originally had a school in Italy lined up to work with us, but they ended up flaking last minute. If anyone is interested in being a Pen Pal, or if you know kids at your school who may be interested please respond. The only requirement is that your school is outside of the US and Canada. Thanks a bunch

I am on my vacation right now and planning my CAS project with my friend, but not really sure which one I should do. One of the ideas that I came up with is organizing a group of people to pick up trash and clean the streets, or maybe other places such as parks and beaches. We will be doing this for about a month and there will be 5-6 people who would join this project. Would this be appropriate for my CAS project?? If not, I want you guys to give me some good ideas.

I am on vacation during the summer in Europe and I haven't come up with a CAS project yet. (I'm not sure if we are supposed to have one but I think it would be good to do it anyway). Is doing a travel vlog with my family considered a "Creative" CAS project? I'm not sure it would be approved.

Hi, I saw somewhere that someone had done cycling for CAS. However, an important question I had is how do you get a supervisor to verify you are doing activities when you are riding a bike locally and alone? I see a lot of activity examples in which people go out and do mountain biking or workout, and I wonder how exactly they get a supervisor for this when they do this by themselves? And as far as I know, parents cannot be supervisors.

Hi everyone! I have been focusing a lot on my CAS experiences to try to get them out of the way from the second year apart for two/three that I normally do. I have done tons of creativity, service and activity. According to Mange Bac, I have 100% of my CAS done and I have not uploaded some of my reflections on the site yet. The experiences I plan to keep are only Service and Activity, there would be no creativity. I did a service trip with my school and there we did so much stuff about creativity I think it would be more than enough. So I was wondering if I had to keep doing creativity until the second year, or if I can do only Activity and Service as m…

I've been dwelling on this question for a while. Why does CAS exist, like what does it actually do for us. They say it was implemented in order for IB students to maintain a balanced lifestyle and I respect the motive, but this has not been the case for me or anyone I know that has taken IB. The fact that we have to reflect, meet deadlines and provide evidence for every single activity only adds on to the stress already provided from our normal school life. CAS merely stresses one out more, rather than alleviate the constant stress and pressure of school. The principles of CAS would be far more effective if they were not a necessity in passing IB, but rather a 'highl…

So I'm taking my driver's license this year and my CAS coordinator said that if I take lessons at a driving school I can get CAS for it (creativity). There are several driving schools where I live, but the one I'm looking at is eco-friendly and the cars don't harm the environment while driving them. If I choose this school could that count as 'global engagement' as a learning outcome since I'm being aware of the climate change and its effects on earth and trying to do something to not worsen the situation?

I'm currently doing several CAS experiences but I'm looking for something that will meet the "global engagement" learning outcome. Is there anything you can do that count as creativity and "global engagement"? For example, writing a research paper on a global issue? Is that acceptable, would it count for CAS and meet this learning outcome?

So I began my IB career in August 2018, and will do my exams in May 2020. I've honestly completely procrastinated the CAS thinking I could do numerous hours recorded (5 hours per C A S) a week. Seemingly, this is not the case. So I wonder: From today until May 2020, how many hours can I complete for CAS? I'm fine working over holidays too etc!
