Just out of curiousity, has anyone done this before? If so, what activity did you do and were there any problems in documentation after?

This year in my batch all of our CAS reflections need to be sent as my batch comes under the 5 year review...and so my CAS co-ordinator says that everything we do in creativity also needs to benefit someone. We usually have these mass production plays and that counts for a major part of creativity but this year none of that is allowed.. So what are the activities that I can do that comes under creativity and also helps someone else. Im guessing it is supposed to be things like garage sale but I'm not sure. And is anyone else facing the same problem??

Hi, I have Action & Service done and dusted however I only have one activity for Creativity but it isn't going to give me enough hours. Also over the holidays I went to Italy and went Olive Picking/Harvesting. My question is if I could put this as Creativity? I did learn the whole a fair amount regarding olive oil and its production so that's why I am hoping to use it. If I can't then I'm in a bit of a jam... Thanks in advance

Could someone please explain to me what a CAS project is and what it entails? My school failed to mention anything to do with this and I've heard that you have to do it for 18 months, so please clarify what I have to do for it.

I have over 150 hours completed, so that's all OK. However I have just 20 for service... Is there an official IB (not in-school) hours requirement? I have read somewhere that the requirement is just two activities for each activity, and I have four. The IBO have this habit of making information extremely difficult to access unless you are willing to pay a premium, and my CAS coordinate has a habit of inventing restrictions, so I have no idea where I stand. Also, if I am screwed any ideas on decently long service activities I can complete in my final week, as I have no subjects which fall in the final week of exams. Thanks.

Hi, How is CAS recorded and presented to IBO? Is there a standard form that one fills out? For example one person indicated that he painted at home for creativity. How does one justify this?

Hello I have heard that for those students that are finishing the diploma in 2013 that the CAS outline is different. Rather than the 50, 50, 50 it is required that cas goes throughout consistant 18 months. I was just curious about how many hours per week this requires. I have seen other forums but the hours are in relation to the 150 hour requirement. How many hours do you think is recommended per week throughout this 18 month period? Thanks in advance

Hi, For CAS, me & a couple of people are thinking of putting together a play, as in writing the script or monologues & then performing, with the aim to incorporate both creativity & service in the project. The idea was the writing & acting would be the 'Creativity', whilst giving the money raised by ticket sales to a charity we feel strongly about would be the 'Service'. The problem is, I feel like I have no idea where to start. All of us have agreed the play has to have a message or moral as the majority of the seats will be filled up with secondary school kids (aged between 11-16), but we also believe because of the range of ages of our audience, we may…

In our school there is only DP. Every year about 35-40 students start Year 1 and 25-28 start Year 2. Unfortunately, we have to do CAS paperwork - print our description of activity with photos, collect signatures, bring them to CAS coordinator. It is really time and money consuming. Also, our only evidence can be photos(since we have to print the forms). I was surfing IBSurvival when I found this program called ManageBac. I quickly glanced at it and it looked GREAT. I want to convince my CAS coordinator to use it, but before I try to do that I have to find strong arguments and make a research on it. I do not want to convince my school to use, when it turns out to be a pie…

Hi everyone I am currently getting closer and closer to finishing my CAS, but I am a little confused about learning outcome G: Considered the ethical implications of your actions. I am not really sure how this comes back in my CAS activities. One example could be that in one of my group activities we deliberately excluded someone from joining our group by telling her we didn't need anymore people in our group and later we did take in another girl. I know this is mean, but none of us could work with this girl and she never really worked when she was in a group and we didn't want her to profit (and hence get lots of CAS hours) from our hard work. Is this an ethical implic…

I am in IB Year 1 and we just started working on CAS stuff and I get how to get action and service hours, but how can I attain creative hours? I mean I am interested in photography and acting and movie-making, so where could I go with this to get creative hours. And also in terms of action hours, am I supposed to hit the gym, go for runs or take dance classes? I don't know what to do and I really need help! Thanks so much Rithu

I just realized that most schools don't follow the 150 hours quota that IB set up. My school has a requirement of 360hours and a 40 hour cap on an activity, so that's quite a lot. What's yours? And why do schools have differently set amount of CAS hours required?

I am with the Canadian Armed Forces, and this is something I've always wanted to do- I won't quit until I am physically unable to serve. I fought my way here, and I'm fighting on. The military is my future, but I also really want to succeed in IB. Now the problem is that the army is going to be a huge time commitment. I will be away from Friday evening all the way to Sunday night for training every weekend or so. On Thursday nights, I am parading with my unit. In the summer I will receive 6 weeks of continuous training, or be deployed overseas. I'm already concerned about how I'm supposed to do my assignments under these conditions, but I think I will make it. Throw CAS h…

A friend of mine and I were discussing CAS...specifically how terrible our coordinator is. She doesn't explain anything, let alone help us in the first place. All we know is that we need to have 150 hours, and that's it. Naturally, we got into panic mode. Here's my case: I completed my action and creativity hours, but still have a few left for service. I'm hearing stuff like you need one activity with all three elements, and one activity that's for 18 months...I've never heard this before. Can someone please clarify what are the requirements? For example, in order to pass CAS, you need...1 activity blah, 2 activities blah, 150 hours, etc. Clarification would be much appre…

Just wondering if anyone had any unique ideas for things to do for CAS? Like I don't know...ikebana, cooking class, etc. And what about for action? Piano, hockey, volleyball, and so on are all good too, but I'm trying to think outside the box! Also, can we get a parent to sign for things we have done, because I thought it had to be someone outside your family? Thanks

School magazine = CAS hours

Hey, fellas. I need some help coming up with ideas for content in our new school magazine. Ideas so far have been teacher/former student interviews, what makes our IB better than other IB schools in the area, etc. Ant help would be appreciated. The reason this thread is in the CAS section is because I (and other people who want to contribute) would get CAS hours for it; I therefore need ideas that could translate to spending time creating said content.

Hi, So I've just joined IB and we just met with our CAS head. It seems tough with all the heavy schedule etc. But what I want to know is that can I count modeling as part of Action? I've done some part time modeling and i've walked the ramp a few times (local fashion shows etc) and i've done lots of photoshoots as well. So i'm just wondering can i count it for CAS? After all its a lot work. Oh and I get paid for it...Is that a problem?

Hello, I proposed two Action activities to my CAS coordinator, Track & Field and weight-training, and she was okay with Track & Field, but weight-training was apparently a problem to her. I proposed to workout 4 hours a week, 2 hours at school, and 2 hours at my residence. The problem is that at school, my personal coach is not always in the gym, but there is always some other coach supervising. Basically, what I do is ask my coach for a weekly workout and much of the training is carried out on my own. Still my personal coach checks like once a week to see my general progress. I don't understand how this could be a problem, since there is always an adult supervisin…

So I was informed back in August by my CAS coordinator that students need to have a CAS project in addition to their normal CAS hours. I am part of my school's first graduating IB class and everything is very unorganized and I have no idea what the requirements are for the CAS project. I am a senior right now and I have many other things on my plate right now such as college apps, IA's, etc. Many of my previous CAS activities included working with children, such as: volunteering with disabled children in art classes and assisting them with painting, playing with them, etc (30 hours); volunteering after school at the elementary school across the street and taking care of t…

So, my class of IB is very lucky to have a very undemanding CAS coordinator. A lot of activities that did not count for the last generation of IB(different coordinator) counts for us, so I believe I will easily collect minimum(150) hours needed and much more. I was just wondering, does it really adds any weight to university applications e.g. do they really care if you have 100 or 250 hours after year 1? I most probably will send my application after Year 1, so is it worth trying to collect a lot of hours (250)? What do you think?

Hello everyone! So one of my many CAS projects consisted in creating a dance for my school's talent show! HAHAHAHAH what makes it reaaaallllyyyy hilarious and strange is that people at my school said that they couldn't imagine me an IB diploma student without any art related IB classes doing such a project! This is because my IB subjects for the diploma are the following: Chemistry - HL Physics - HL English A2 - HL Spanish A1 -HL Economics - SL Math - SL Also, I feel reaally akward when dancing at parties in this country (Ecuador) because the music they mainly play is reggaeton which according to the people at the parties, should be danced in a reaally suggestive way. So…

Hi guys. I'm quite new in IB (I've started this September) and few days ago I had an introduction to CAS. I tought, that learning new language (in my case - French) would count as creativity and, except new abilities, i'd gain some more CAS hours through it. My CAS coordinator told me that, if I want to link language with CAS, it has to be (directly quoting her words) "oriental one, or a language from different culture". Poland and France are from different cultural regions (FR is Roman and PL is Slavic), FR is definetly not 'oriental'. What do you think, should I fight for this case, or just let go and pick up Japaneese or sth? xx, Olga

My CAS teacher seems to know nothing about it. She is usually changing the rules of the game very often. She asks us to do odd stuff and manipulating our reports, like changing the dates of the reports, or avoiding to write any date at all ! She say IB is constantly telling her new ways to work, which makes me go mad. We used to have a record of the hours we worked on each aspect. She said we had to complete at least 50 hours on each, so we added up a total of 150 at the end. It was so nice since I had 2.5 years to complete it. It was like 1 hour a week. But now she says it was changed, she says that now it's not about the hours, but about the projects. She wants we to co…

I just wanted to make sure that playing an instrument (or singing) counts as creativity. I'm in IB2 and basically all my creativity hours are from playing the guitar, piano or singing and now my CAS coordinator (who at the beginning of IB1 said that playing an instrument was indeed creativity) started complaining about how playing an instrument should count as action and not creativity, as only performing with the instrument is creativity. However, I won't be able to perform anywhere this year (due to my stage fright and lack of opportunities to do so), and I haven't performed with e.g. guitar which I haven't been playing for a while. So, is my coordinator just being stup…
