Hey guys. As we all know, we need to do at least 50 hours of Service for us to pass IB (I'm not including Creativity and Action because its irrelevant). I live in Libya, and I'm NOT Libyan, which makes service work extremely difficult. I can't speak fluent enough Libyan to help out anywhere like hospitals and what else. I am a Canadian citizen and its easy for me to go to Mississauga alone and stay with my relatives, so I'm thinking of going there during the winter break and do some volunteer work. If anyone has experience with this IN CANADA then please help me out. I need a place to volunteer IN MISSISSAUGA, preferably a hospital because of my interest in medicine. I'…

For my CAS Project I will create a play but I have no idea what type will it be and what story. Any ideas? It has to be a small scripted play. Ideally it should be anywhere between 30 minutes and 60 minutes. I'm going to the USA in Christmas and so if possible point any bookstores and bookshops where this script is being sold (and props and other things). Thanks for the help.

My first CAS log is due on Monday, however I was not able to start. This is because I am going to volunteer at a local hospital for my hours but the Volunteer Coordinator was not available this week. Would this be a problem?

Currently, I'm getting my creativity hours by practicing jazz music on the piano. My CAS coordinator told us that playing instruments was fine for creativity, as long as it was something new (I only played RCM classical piano until then). I've read that students need to get their hours signed by a supervisor for the activities, but I'm only practicing at home. I'm pretty sure my mom can't be a supervisor. Will these hours spent practicing count even without a signature? My school has a yellow CAS sheet, where we only need to put in our CAS activity name and number of hours spent on it. I don't see anything that needs a supervisor signature. Basically, my question is, do…

Me and 2 friends just started this project for the outcome, consider the ethical implications of your activites, and i need help in planning it. This is what i planned for so far: - create posters - sell tickets and register people, make tournament bracket with people who signed up - organise venue in school - organise for food - actual tournament, which will be on 3 seperate days but can this cover 25 hours?? Also, i will justify for the outcome by saying that i will supervise the younger kids and ensure that it is planned well. Also, i will use the money raised (from selling tickets and food) to give to charity thanks

I am currently in the first semester of IB1, and I have already had 102.6 hours of CAS from 9 different activities with the following details: Creativity 60.69 hours Action 30.83 hours Service 11.08 hours My problem is that I am having too many hours for Creativity. I do not know if I can allocate some my Creativity hours to Service. I have this calendar project where I am HELPING my teacher with his community project. I make the calendar and all proceed will go to charity. I have got 23.2 hours from this activity, which is full of designing, photo editing and making the calendar itself. I want to divide it into 2: 11.6 hr go to C, 11.6 go to S. Can I do that? I am helpin…

So my CAS coordinator is useless. I'm not sure what the role of the CAS coordinator is, but my only interaction with mine is turning in my CAS sheets. I just discovered the CAS Learning Outcomes yesterday. and I'm the first in the group of 15 Diploma candidates to discover these. After completeing all 150 hours, somehow... right, through violin and performances. Are the Learning outcomes new or something? is it really possible my CAS coordinator doesn't know about them? She has us fill out a sheet to document our hours. I think this may be our "journal" as well... i'm just, lost. and really mad. I now have to rework my previous acitvities to fit the outcomes. (I should'…

In the state I live in, it is a requirement that students complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service. Would CAS hours count for this? Also, what is the IB minimum for CAS hours? For my CAS I want to volunteer at a hospital is this okay?

I have to do 20 hours of CAS. I figured that I could write something at home for creativity or I could go to a swimming pool for action. My question is - how can I get supervisor for this? How is anyone supposed to know that I spent exactly seven hours on action? Isn't it enough evidence that I just bring my work and show it to my teacher or a receipt from swimming pool?

I work in a kindergarten as part of CAS. I don't specifically teach the kids, but I help run center time, help the teacher with the activities the kids do, play with them in recess time, and help with their dismissal. I also do activity preparation such as cutting things out, making special ingredients for snack, running errands, etc. What do I count this as?

Does this sound like a good idea for a 25 hour group project. we have to speak to our CAS adviser about a plan. so far, i thought of these ways to make up the hours: - Making posters and stuff for people who want to participate - buy prizes - make draft of people (single tournament) and organise the tournament (venue, date etc..) - the actual tournament itself what are other ideas i can use thanks

Hey people, I have just started my second year and also just started filling in my CAS forms. 1. Is there any prescribed CAS form? Like, all IB students across the world have to fill in the same form? 2. Is there any particular format of filling the form in? Please help, I have filled in 2 forms for 2 activities, and have the gut feeling that I'm doing it wrong. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Work hard party harder!

so my school is going to go to Sukabumi (a suburb around here) in December 2010 for CAS. we will build a kindergarten there. and it is going to cost around 5600 USD overall. we will also go to Cambodia in March and give donation. however we need to collect 1120 USD by 1st October and the fund raising projects that we are doing will not result in money so quickly. we are doing the Walk-a-thon in 4th week of October and so the money will be handed in in November. we are also making a calendar out of children pictures but it will be finished in middle November, and so we will start selling it in November onwards. we are doing some small projects too but they do not result in…

Hello, Been a while since I participated in the forums (thank you, IB) so I may have posted in the wrong place, and if that's the case I'm sorry, move it to the right place, or let it die. I'm stuck on my CAS hours- I've got 118 'approved' hours, but none completed. My tutor says that a lot don't count because they're mainly for my friends and family so I plan to spend 25 hours working in a charity shop and 25 hours doing something else. The 25 hours where I want to do something else are annoying me because I know what I want to do, I just can't figure out what I'm going to do. I want it to be something environmental because I'm an avid horticulturalist and my religion in…

I have joined : 1) MUN 2) HW help 3) Running clup 4) Volley ball club 5) Rounders 6) Indoor cricket 7) Table tennis, i want to work in a restaurant near my house, and they are ok with it. The thing is we have to write a proposal and i dont know why i am joining it, well i do, and as per me it doesnt go under service, it goes under creativity and action.(i have never worked in a restaurant before so its something new and it will build my confidence). So was wondering if u guys could suggest some reason why its service or some reasons why its creative and involves action.. thx

Hello, me again! I've had a couple of ideas, both of which are going to go ahead (thankfully!) and I thought you guys, if you're stuck for hours or inspiration, might like to hear them: 1: My CAS co-ordinator sent me an e-mail, and it seem the Media & Film departments at my college have decided to start a cinema club! Before summer, I offered to write a script that we could film at college (based on a book I love) and she said that as long as she has the script by the end of the summer, it would be considered for filming. She showed it to the people who'll be in charge of the club in September and... THEY LIKE IT! They want to film it! It took me 6 hours to write the…

Watching Movies for CAS 1 2
by Guest thoughts13- 23 replies

The CAS supervisor at my school had blatantly said that anything can be counted as CAS as long as we can convince her. Our school also has a 30 hour limit meaning that only 30 hours of school related extracurricular activities can count for CAS this is for both years, and for all categories. What I want to do is to convince my CAS supervisor that watching movies in school does not fall under school related activities No we're not going to critique the movies, but I suppose that I could do that for journal entries I'm just looking for suggestions, and arguments that will convince my CAS supervisor to exempt this activity from those 30 hours. If it helps at all, I am also t…

After reading the different threads I've seen that most people have been assigned a CAS project by their coordinator. I'm shocked as it sounds like a major project and requirement and we were never told by our coordinator to partake in such a thing. Is this required for all IB students or just for your particular schools? All our teacher had required of us to do was 150 hours of Action, Creativity, and Service.

My IB coordinator told me all that I had to do was 150 hours, which to be fair was correct. However, she didn't tell my class that the program has changed it's CAS requirements, one of which is a project lasting 18 months, until a week before my junior year ended. You can see my problem. I had planned on doing the 150 hours this year, but now I have no idea what to do, because this new system confuses me immensely. I would appreciate any and all help I can get at this point.
