It was a benefit for a volunteer fire department, but there was a lot of action involved (I was on frontline infantry) and creativity in recreating period correct things for camp. Which do you think I should put it under? And do you think I can count time spent in camp (living a period correct existence) along with time spent in battle?

My school has this thing that we cannot do CAS for something that we already know/ have done before, like I can't take tennis for action since I already play it. So I am doing Teakwondo for my Action. Since I am learning a new skill as well as doing the kicks and stances, which falls under exercise, so can I get hours for both Creativity and Action or not? Master Oz.

I'm pretty excited to volunteer this summer! What are your plans? I was wondering how volunteering goes in Europe because the job market has always been tight. In Canada, getting a volunteer job is a piece o' cake. It's free workforce which employers tend to get advantage of. I'm going to a seniors' house 9-10 hours a day.

In my school, the candidates of 2010, have been told that we are to follow an entirely different CAS system for our IB. Instead of having to complete 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service of no more than 50 hours for one activity, we have to have enough activities (at least one long term) that have to cover all the criteras of CAS. This means that as long as you do a long term and it constitutes all the sides of CAS, it can be one activity only. For example, say you are part of the Student council. You "creatively" create posters to advertise a marathon fundraiser (Creativity), you organise the marathon (Service) and you take part in the marathon (Action), and tha…

I found an interesting photography project that I wanted to do, and it just happens to also be a perfect activity for CAS. Its something called project 365 where you take a picture every single day for a year as a kind of visual journal of sorts. I was also planning on doing another photography project with taking portraits of friends and people and comparing them to see how different they are and if there is any certain reason why. Anyway, would this count? Do I get cas hours if I am doing it completely independently and there is no one to moderate or to keep track of what I am doing?

Which area of CAS, does meditation (specifically speaking, Vipassana) fall in? Action - Sitting continuous for hours in the same postition, without any movement of hands or legs. Creativity - Learning new things from experience of Awareness, and slow mental transformation Service - serving the soul and not getting any material return in turn.

So, I'm finally getting around to slowly chisling off my CAS hours. I've already got 40 out of the way, but I just recently colored in an anime poster that my friend drew for our anime club's annual Valentine's Day party. It took me all of an hour to do, it was rather simple. But as I started to fill out a CAS form for it, I found myself wondering if I should count it as a CAS hour at all. The project just doesn't seem fitting for the questions: "Explain what you hoped to accomplish through this project" - ...to...color inside the lines? "What difficulties did you encounter, and how did you overcome them?" - One of my red markers dried out. So I got another one. "Wh…

Hello Recently, I worked for several weeks at a campaign office for a local candidate during the Canadian federal election. I went door to door, delivering pamphlets and asking residents for support, and in doing so shared ideas and discussed federal policy. Now, I asked my CAS coordinator if this qualifies as hours for CAS, and he was pretty sure that it didn't as I was working for a political party and not a group which is non-partisan. However, I still feel that by getting involved in the community and discussing issues, I was fulfilling the goal of CAS which is to create students who are active in the community and interact well with other people. The only thing I fou…

Our student counselor mentioned more than once a 1-year project and a 6-month project and a 1-week project, but I've never seen anything like that in the IBO. Are those stuff my school wants or are the IB requirements?

In school I always perform in the school plays, and last year I completed all of my Creativity hours with the play. I'm doing alright with Service, but for Action I have basically nothing because I have a condition that makes it dangerous for me to participate in sports. My questions is, for the upcoming school play we will be doing a lot of dancing, so would I be able to count that for Action? Not just the dancing, but the whole production as well. Drama can take a lot of physical work actually lol.

I am an EMT (paramedic, for anyone who is not familiar with the abbreviation) and I spent my first IB year saturdays and now my friday nights training and studying, and that has taken a lot of my CAS opportunities for gaining extra hours. Since I did my service in a hospital I could only stay two hours per week, and now I am really worried about gaining my 150 required hours. However I consider that working as an EMT covers at least the A and S in CAS and maybe the teacher should take this into account. What do you think, should I tell her to consider this as CAS?

In my school I have to do 150 hours of CAS. But my CAS coordinator insist us on making sure that we have at least 6 activities to fill in the 150 hours. We can have single activities, as in pure creativity, or action, or service, but we also need to have activities where we mix the three (CAS) together, so we have to have an activity where there is C & S, and C & A, and A & S. Does your school do that too?

Can you do two activities, like photography (creativity) and walking (action) at the same time. Two days a week, I walk home from school which takes me about 40 minutes. I run every other day and I'm in pretty good shape, so I don't consider walking as working out, although it gives me 80 extra minutes of action every week. If I take pictures while I'm walking, does that count as 80 minutes of creativity as well? Or do I have to divide both by two?

Our CAS coordinator is one of the people who goes to the confrences and teaches other teachers the new CAS " syllabus" if you will. Well when she was there the group came up with the idea of having a student union. We would be like mentors to the rising juniors that have to deal with the new guidelines of CAS. Once that it done then we will be responsible for making our school or internationally involved. For example, since our school is not just an IB school and we have two other programs there we would work on getting the whole school -all programs -involved in the domestic community and the international. Well I was wondering if anyone else has this at their school fro…

I am new to IB and I really don't have a clue what this CAS thing is about! Do I have to distribute my 150 hours evenly between Creativity, Action and Service? Or can I just spend 150 hours on for example service alone? Oh and any tips on the sort of thing I can do?

My teacher won't let me do any sport activity for Action hours in CAS, she says everything has to be a combination of either creativity and service or action and service. But I was reading other topics and some of you guys mentioned that just by going to the gym you gained hours, is this permitted even if it doesn't involve a service?

So my CAS hours are all due April 1. And I haven't finished any of the reflections. I'm done all my hours, but in the CAS package it says that a 600 word reflection must be completed for EVERY 10 hours of each activity/project? What if you play piano and you have 300+ hours of practicing piano..which is basically the same thing every time (except when you learn a new piece). Or what if you play sports and each practice is the same routine...warm ups, drills, practice? Do they really expect a detailed reflection after every 10 hours if they're all essentially the same? Also, I joined the local gym last April. I work out about 1-2 hours each week there. Does this count as a…

Is it important to have a wide variety of different activities that gives smaller amounts of hours than 2 or 3 activities that give a larger amount of hours? Right now, I have 2 activities but I have my year 1's hours met and at this pace I can finish my year 2 hours no problem. Should I try to get a more variety of activities or just stick with the 2 I have?

I wonder how important CAS, how much do they look into it? i sweden i don't think they could care less, so explain it to me how important is it? My problem is i do some very time consumming things that do not fall into CAS according to our CAS cordinator. I vice-president of the school council (yeah i should have been president, but those feministic ******* wanted a girl...) and i can't count this as CAS even though i organize a lot of cool things and basically do something that learns me much about leadership and how to take structure up things... so can i still somehow include this when aplying?? and how much CAS hours are you guys doing? i could have a lot o…

I just recently thought of this "activity" I might pursue. My friends and I gather every Sunday to play some baseball so I began to think if I were to incorporate some sort "raising awareness" thing into the game I should be able to count towards my CAS hours. Right now, I've pretty much decided that for every homerun I hit I, my parents, and others will donate a certain amount of money to the local children's hospital. I'm still contemplating whether or not to go door to door to ask for donations because these games aren't official ones as I do not belong to a local team. Anyways...am I just crazy or perhaps I'm onto something here..?

Three of my friends and I took up the challenge of making the high school yearbook as one of our C.A.S projects this year, and so far we've got it surprisingly under control (or I'm just taking it way too easy, the other three are panicking at how little time we have left to get everything done; we have until the end of March). The only problem is that it's a little too short, despite how much school-related content we've already crammed in there. So does anyone have any suggestions? Even something they could borrow from their own high school yearbook, or any yearbook? Just an idea for something we could do as a random page, like a page of poems or quotes (though we did …

Hi everyone! We are two IBDP students and we have created a CAS website as our Creativity activity. The website is: ibcas.webs.com In the website, we are planning to compare and contrast the CAS activities of our school with the whole world. Therefore we need IB Students from all around the world to send us their comments on and photos of their CAS activities. If you want to participate, please send your CAS materials to this email: It is fine if you just send us some photos, comments etc.; but it would be better if you could also write your school's name or your country's name, as we aim compa…
