Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

So I am to write an EE in economics and need help with choosing a good question. So far I have three ideas: I would examine how implementations of Sunday shopping restrictions in Poland affected retail sales/shopping malls in my city. It might not be that hard to find data, as the local statistic bureau is collecting some and there is something interesting to write about as one brand managed to get around the law and now is almost a monopoly when it comes to Sunday shopping. On the other hand, I don't see clearly which part of the syllabus I will use with such an essay, maybe a little bit of market structures and overall level of economic activity... …

Hey guys, So recently, our teacher has took us through the beginning of the EE process and we are sending him topics for approval. I sent him a whole list of potential ideas I have for my essay and he replied that they all have potential and that I should pick one. He also mentions that the more local it is, the more better. Which one of these topics appeal to you the most: - To what extent is the land use efficient for construction of the Section C dam of the Peace River near Fort St. John, BC? - To what extent does the geography of British Columbia's coastline aid in the defense of the nation? - How has the fertility of the Okanagan Valley contr…

Hello, For the EE I used a book which was published in 2008. In the "References" section I correctly wrote it was published in 2008. I have 3 in-text citations referring to this book. For one of them, I correctly wrote (author, 2008, p. number). But for the other two, I accidentally wrote (author, 2010, p. number), although the correct date of the book is 2008. Is this likely to cause me a big issue? Edit: There is no version of this book published in 2010, which shows that I did not mean a different book. I think this also shows that I just confused the dates and made an honest mistake (which I did). I don't think anyone will notice, but even if they do, I don'…

Hello, for my extended essay, I want to write an essay. My subjects will be biology mixed with economics, but focusing on the biology of it. My teachers said we dont have to write a lab and an essay also works. I was thinking of talking about the rapidly increasing rates of cancer in the Middle East, and focus on which cancer treatment is most used in the Middle East. However I can't find a research question that would be specific enough to achieve top grades. I am not asking for anyone to write my research question for me or do the work for me, but could someone help me in focusing my topic and telling me if the topic is even good? thank you in advance

Human spirituality and racism in Harper lee's To kill a mockingbird and in Tony Morrison's The bluest eye? Hi everyone. First time poster here so sorry if I get something wrong! I've thought a lot about what I want to do for my extended essay and finally got it narrowed down to "something about religious themes and/or symbolism in CS Lewis' works". Obviously that's way too vague. My two questions are; 1. Would it be better to write just about the Chronicles of Narnia? On the one hand, books like The Screwtape Letters are too obviously about religion, but on the other hand, I don't want to make it too narrow and not have enough to write about, or seem too focused on his more popular work. 2. How can I make "something about religious themes and/or symbolism" more specific?…

I have chosen English Lit and Language A as my EE subject. I have come up with some topic ideas, but I want to see what you people think of these topics and RQ's: The effect that an epistolary format has on character development in Jerusalem's Lot and Frankenstein. Jerusalem's lot is a short story written by Stephen King. How does Agatha Christie’s use of literary techniques (red herrings, plot twists etc.) in And Then There Were None and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd mislead the readers about the plot? How does the usage of an unreliable narrator in Shutter Island and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd help create a feeling of sus…

Sooo I've been juggling a couple of ideas but my first was to analyse Avatar: The Last Airbender as a EE in Film. That was pretty quickly rejected because of the fact that writing an EE in a course that isn't offered in your school is just a really bad idea... I got really discouraged after something I was so excited to do was rejected flat out. Anyhow, I'm now writing my EE in Lang and Lit and analyzing ads. My research question is something along the lines of: To what extent are traditional gender roles projected in contemporary America through Super Bowl commercials? It has been approved, but I'm not incredibly excited for it, I mean it's cool but what can be…

For my EE, I was considering studying the novel Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood (so a Category 1 Literature essay). I still need to find a research question. I was considering the question : how is masculinity portrayed in Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace? My problem is that I don't know if it's the most appropriate question to pick for the book, and if I should go for another (but keep in mind I wanted to pick an original idea). What do you guys think? This research question or another? Any ideas/suggestions would help!

I'm planning on doing my ee on either physics or chemistry. I have got a topic in mind for both subjects. for chemistry: I'm thinking of talking about honey viscosity and the affect of change in temperature of honey from different countries, but I don't know if this is more of a chemistry extended essay or biology extended essay. If not please help me with some chemistry extended essay examples that are not very common. For physics: I want to do something with cars or projectile motion. If you please have an idea or something that could help me choose my topic please inform me.

Okay, so I have to start writing my EE soon and I don't even have a question. I want to do Medicine after IB and so initially my coordinator said do a world studies EE on something medicine related around the world. That would be all good, but every question idea I come up with has nothing to do with global issues or is related to the rest of the world. And I'm guessing being WORLD studies, that's an issue. So then I was gonna do just a bio EE but I really don't want to do an experiment and everything I'm coming up with would be impossible to do an experiment for anyway. But everything I've read says its really hard to get top marks on a science EE without an experi…

Hello everyone. At the moment I am working on my first draft for my Extended Essay, I am doing English A. One worry I have is that my choice in topic is 'well worn'. My chosen novel isn't as overdone as books like 1984 or Lolita for example, but it was very popular on its release in the 1990s. I am also studying one of the novel's central themes, but admittedly I am adding some unique spins and analysis. Would choosing well worn book or topic be a major issue? Thanks for the help!

I'm literally so confused about how to write an english EE (Type/group 1), like how is it different to other english lit assesment items such as the WIT? I know it's more general or something but does that mean I can't focus on a single literary device (e.g symbolism), as that's what I intended to do. My school hasn't given me any real guidance and there's nothing I've been able to find on the internet other than example essays but this is the sort of task where it's hard to use examples to discern what specifically what is expected of you. Any help will be very much appreciated, thanks!

Kind of stressed as we have to submit out proposal in two days so I really need some help. Hello, I am preparing for my extended essay in biology. Reading the extended–essay–for–dummies I spotted: If you are doing a science-based EE, ALWAYS do your own experiment, research EEs will not do well Therefore I started wondering whether measuring pollution in different lakes would be considered an experiment or research.

I am thinking about doing my EE in Computer Science but I am not anywhere close to a topic. I've tried to do research on good topics for Computer science but all the examples seem so very complicated that 1. I'm scared (even though in our normal Computer science classes I have no problems following and completing assignments + all other EE topics in other subjects look threatening too) and 2. I don't want to plagiarise anyone else so everything that I see and could consider I sorta dismiss. So far I've seen various stuff about cryptopathology, data compresion and data structures. Are these the "traditional topics" for Computer science? And does that make them overdon…

Hey everyone, I'm in my first year of DP and I kindly request your advice. My school has set the deadline for our extended essays by the end of summer and hence, I have to come up with a research topic. I'm planning to go into IT after I graduate(hopefully) and I would like to use ITGS as my topic idea for the Extended Essay. However, I have not opted to take ITGS and I am concerned whether I can do an extended essay on it and still get an 'A'. I also take economics SL and I'm very interested in it as well. I was wondering if I can't do the essay on ITGS, could I link both subjects somehow? Thanks, guys.

For my physics EE I decided to look at gravity and stability(my topic) and "how does the loading of a truck affects the shift of the central gravity and how that shift affects the tipping point of a truck if its in a stationary position?"(research question) . For my experiment I've used blocks of different masses that I placed on a aluminium platform using different variation. Where aluminium platform is like a truck platform and the blocks that I used act like loading. So basically I placed them in different ways and looked at the which angle each object will tip over. In my essay I will show how does the central gravity shifts and how it actually affects the tipping poi…

Hello I'm a new DP 1 student and I started looking for ideas for my EE. I decided to pursue chemistry as my subject and I have a solid topic in mind, but it's not wide enough. I'm going to investigate differents cuts of meat of different ages and I'll compare the values of protein and fats in each. What can I do else? And how can I make this a proper topic? What experiments can I execute? If you're not allowed to help me, just tell me how I can find the experiment needed... Thank you in advance.

I have a dilemma, I submitted the wrong file for my EE to the eCoursework portal, is it still possible for it to be replaced? I uploaded the 2nd draft (instead of the final), in which the conclusion and parts of the body are different, also the bibliography is not alphabetical. I would want to avoid losing any unnecessary marks, especially if it's due to some stupid, absent-minded reason such as this. The official upload deadline for the EE is the 15th of March, right? So, i'm hoping this can be resolved. How should I go about this?

Hi IB Survival, TL;DR: Is there a subject I can write about using only internet sources and not get ****ed by IB? For those who want to read (please do): I'm currently in DP1 and we're supposed to have our EE research questions in. I intended on writing mine in biology (lab experiment) and lo and behold, our school is shut down for a month (maybe more) because of the lovely coronavirus. Hello my friends in misfortune who started or already doing or even finished IB. I'm a bit dead now as I've done almost 2 years and 2 months away from the finish. Got good offers from top UK unis, planning on doing film studies, it was all good. Just got a piece of information that the supervisor and coordinator are almost completely sure that my EE would fail. They had a formal meeting with me where they asked me tricky questions like "when was the interview", "how does your interviewee looked like" etc. and got a conclusion that there is a serious concern of academic dishonesty. Hi! I’m currently freaking out over my EE. We are supposed to give in our proposals in 2 days but I don’t know exactly what to talk about. I can do it either in English or in Economics, for both of them I’d like to talk about feminism or how sexism can affect X and Y.
