Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I am writing my Extended Essay in English B HL and can't relly on the guidance of my supervisor as I am actually rewriting it and the first time got a D under his guidance. So I am at choosing my research question and thought to match it up with the law, as I plan to study law in university. I have had ideas but am not sure if they have high mark potential. These are some of my ideas: Category 2 Culture - How has the modernization of the English language affected the legal language over time? Category 1 Language - How different is the English legal language from the English common language? These are the only two research que…

Hello All, As you know by the title, I need EE help. Basically, I chose to do a biology EE cause it is my passion. At the beginning of our topic selection, I met with my advisor and told her that I wanted to do something with E.coli. Over the next several meetings I had with her, I decided upon studying how the different pH's of different foods inhibit E.coli growth. Long story short, on the LAST day of school my advisor tells me that I can no longer choose a topic that has to do with bacteria or else I will not score well. Apparently, IBO changed their guidelines that effected my class and when I asked my advisor about it she said: "yea, they can do that and we have…

Hi Guys. I would love your opinion on my extended essay biology experiment, which looks at the negative effects of pesticides on the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. I was going to go to lake michigan and 5 nearby ponds and gather water samples from them. Then I was going to look at whether or not pesticides were in these water samples. I would then conclude whether or not pesticides are contaminating water ecosystems. The experiment is too basic, which is why I would love opinions.

Hello everyone, For my EE, I have decided to make it over the Nuremberg Trials and in History/Group 3, since I love learning about history and have am interested in law as well. My current research question is as follows: "To what extent were the Nuremberg Trials hampered by tensions between the Soviet judges and Western ones?" Basically, I wanted to analyze how the beginnings of Cold War tensions and oddities of the trials, such as how the Soviets themselves participated in the invasion of Poland, may have hindered the proceedings of the trials through the relations between the Soviet prosecutors and judges and those from the US, UK, and France. I am still in t…

Hello, I'm starting the DP in September and one week into it, I have to announce what I'll be doing the EE on. I've already started thinking about it, and I'd either do it on the feasabiliy of interstellar travel within our lifetime (Physics) or on something about mathematical philosophy (not sure exactly what yet but it would be theoretical for sure. However, both subjects would mean I have no data. Does it matter whether I have data or not and are these, more generally, good subjects for an EE? Thank you very much!

Hi everyove, its the middle of the summer and iM SUPOSED TO WRITE MY EXTENDED ESSAY and submit the draft on august 26th. Originaly my research question was Effect of changes of the pH on photosynthesis of aquatic and terrestrial plants or How are terrestrial and aquatic plants impacted by changes of pH, measured by oxygen release during respiration, something in this manner. But as I started writung it, there is really not much to write about for 4000 words! Any ideas? I am already demotivated by this topic... Hey Everyone. I m doing my EE on " The Scarlet Letter". MY exact question is "How does Nathanial Hawthorne's potrayal of the Puritan society expose religious hypocrisy?" I feel like I should change this question or tweak it quite a bit. Also now I'm confused on what exactly I should be writing about too. Is this question okay or should I change it?

Hello, all who have clicked on this post I would like to simply ask you one question about my ee, specifically whether you guys think its tooo simple or not. So, for my extended essay, I've chosen to do physics (o god), and the sub-topic of astrophysics (double o god), I have come up with an idea for my ee, which is Investigating how the Luminosity, Mass and Surface Temperature of Main Sequence stars are interconnected. Is this too simple for an ee, or do you guys believe it has the potential to be a good if not decent ee? Oh, and the essay will be a database EE, (creating an experiment, and fitting data to come with some conclusion) (I won't go over t…

I decided to do my EE during summer and I’m unsure on what to include and need help. My question is “ To what extent has Apples high pricing strategy enabled Samsung to gain market share?” I decided to talk about the 4 Ps and product life cycle and pricing strategies. All of these are related to chapter 4 of the business course which would be marketing. Can I include something from the finance topic? Should mainly look at how much units they sold and what strategies did they use to sell them over the years?

It’s very rough and I really need some help refining it and also advice as to how I should go on from here. Thank you!

Hey, I'm doing my EE in English on a novel. I was wondering if I could use characterisation as a literary technique in the RQ like as a substitute for maybe symbols or any obvious technique or does characterisation even count as a literary device? For instance- How does the AUTHOR use characterisation to of NAME to explore the THEME in the Novel? So would that be allowed??

This is quite a long story but I'm going to make it as short as possible. So when I first got my EE form, I put English Literature as my subject and put my two suggested supervisors who are both familiar with the subject. However, I was given a completely different supervisor who bases her teaching on VA. Though she told me I can focus on any subject like History, English or VA since she majors on them on the first meeting I had with her. Moreover, the DP Coordinator a few months ago, asked what subject my EE was and I said English whilst I had already submitted a VA EE. I don't really know why I did that, I just didn't have a proper RQ at the time and my supervisor …

Hi everyone, I'm currently in the process of writing my EE and am doing a comparative study on two anti-war novels of WWII. My exact question is: "How and to what effect do Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut use black humour to satirise free will within Catch 22 and Slaughterhouse 5?" I'm at the point of finalising most of my research but am very concerned that everything I'm looking at might be completely useless and won't actually help me write the essay when it comes down to it. So, what I am hoping is that someone on here can provide some insight on what to research and think about in order to ensure that the research doesn't prove completely useless and what t…

I am interested in knowing how others structured their science discussion section. In my EE I've conducted an experiment to see how three different factors that all affect the rate of transpiration in trees change the rate when combined. The experiment went smoothly and I'm halfway into finishing my EE but I'm having troubles with writing the discussion part. I know that a lot of this part of the EE has to do with comparing your results with data you can find from other sources and discuss why your data and the other data may differ for example. I've been reading scientific publication online for the past week but I am unable to find studies on the effect of combina…

Hey so I was looking into doing an extended essay on ITGS and My question is "what effects do scientific software's such as PASCO and PHeT have on students" I'm not sure if the question Is a bit too broad or perhaps doesn't make sense at all, should I rephrase it? The question explores how students benefit from using these Simulator/software (for example in their physics IA's) versus ones that don't (one's who manually have to conduct the experiments with uncertainties as well as risks and or just understanding from plane diagrams) Gimmi your thoughts on this :o!

Hi, I'm doing Chemistry for EE and right now i've been looking to do something food-chem related. I've talked to my supervisor to discuss some ideas, but they've all been rejected as they are more for IA rather than EE. What can I add to an RQ to give it the extra depth it needs? My original idea for a foodchem question was: How does ____ ( physical property, eg. grind size ) of _____ (any food, eg. ginger, coffee beans) influence the amount of _____(compound in food, eg. Gingerol, Caffeine) that can be extracted from it? I also thought of something like how the coating of effervesence tablets affect the rate at which it dissolves. As you can see, my topic…

My teacher says I need to include a specific piece of economic theory in the question. Problem is, my essay focusses on several aspects of economic theory. My essay is structured basically as: 1. Allocative efficiency 2. Productive efficiency 3. Labour market 4. Effect on taxicab drivers 5. Indirect tax implemented by the government There's no way I can synthesise all of those things into one aspect of economic theory, because... it's lots of aspects of economic theory? Is that OK?

Hi, my first post here i'm sorry for any mistakes.... So, I decided to write my EE in English B and my supervisor said she only supervises essays in culture so i thought I'd write an EE on some interesting phenomenon in the western part of the US - it's obviously anglophone and i'm also interested in western US. My current ideas are: reasons of decline in UFO belief/sightings in the US since the 1990 (like, X-files no longer aired, the Internet, new trends etc) - my teacher said it's too "useless" for an EE (like, it's not too scientific), but it approaches some cultural phenomenon, so i'm not giving up on it yet why is there decline in western movies prod…

Dear IB survival community, I am currently planning my Economics EE. I chose to investigate the market structure of my local coffee shop industry. I think this is a topic which allows for lots of primary research, however, I definitely want to include some relevant secondary sources in my essay as well. My supervisor has told me to look into economic books that deal with market structure analysis. Does anyone have any suggestions for that matter? Or any other useful tips or resources I could use for my essay?

Hey guys, I'm writing my ee in economics and the research question is: To what extent has the "Amazon effect"created an impact on high street retail department stores in the UK? The issue is I'm not sure what area to specify into. Whether it be looking into the unemployment-aspect of it to go into macro Econ or the price wars and price competition. There is also the option to look into the land value and real estate value as these department stores are shutting down so more land is available for other business to take up. When I was picking my EE topic I wanted to write about MMO games. Both my mentor and teacher said that it's too vague so then I narrowed it down to League of Legends. After explaining to them that I did not know what subject area this would be under, my teacher said that it should be Group 1 Category 3 for Literature. I was reading the guidelines and I don't understand how a video game would fit in this subject area. My question is "How are gender stereotypes demonstrated in League of Legends?" Would this question fit in group 1 category 3? If so, how do I write about this? I was told to compare the game with another game but I wasn't sure how that would apply to the…

The EE question I came up with was "To what extent is the market for airplane travel from Lisbon to Porto a contestable market?". Contestable markets is an economic theory invented in the early 1980s, that differs from the classical ones, and suggests that an oligopolistic or monopolistic market will provide at the productively efficient price, not the maximising MC = MR, because of the constant threat of new entrants taking way their market share. Airlines generally are an example, but it depends on the barriers to entry. This topic seems very interesting, and I have a lot of sources, but "Contestable markets" is not a topic in IB economics. I'm writing a history EE about Quebec and I'd say about 1/3rd of my sources are entirely in French. There were one or two that I could find actual English translations for, but otherwise, a significant amount of my citations are not in English. Could this create a problem for me? I know that French is one of the three "accepted" IB languages (I think the others are English and Spanish), but I'm worried that my sources could be considered "wrong" if a majority of examiners could not read them. Hi, I'm planning to write my EE based on my English B subject. I'm actually having quite a hard time forming a solid question, but I've thought of a couple of topics. - the book "No Longer Human" by Dazai Osamu. I could talk about how the author showcases the struggle of the main character, a social outcast, trying to fit in the society, before he decided to commit suicide. -"Animal Farm/1984" by George Orwell and how it reflects the modern society/government. Since I'm living in Thailand I'd mainly focus on the Thai politics. -How mental illness was portrayed by the show "13 reasons why," and what impact it may have on the viewers. …

Hi! I am just about to have to submit a proposal for an EE. I was wondering would this work for an essay and is it too narrow? How did the increased availability of sexual education in Thailand work to decrease their overall population? I don’t know if this relationship is too implied. I was also thinking about comparing the availability of sexual education in Thailand vs. the U.S. or some other country. Would that work better? Honestly I am just confused on what determines if an EE topic will work or not.

A month away from the end of Year 1, and it's been two (maybe three?) weeks since we were asked to start thinking on our extended essay topics. I want to write an essay on the high fantasy genre. I've been researching about it for some time now, and I have somewhat of a topic ready (I think): "How and why does George R. R. The "How" and "Why" are pretty clear in my mind, and I've been writing down any points related to them. For now, I really only want to know your honest thoughts about this topic. Does it still feel too broad or too narrow, or too vague? Is "twist" not th…
