Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hi all, quick question about choosing books for the EE. Is it appropriate and acceptable to compare a theme present in two novels written by the same author, or is it preferable to compare novels by different authors instead? Thanks!

Hi guys! I'm planning on doing an EE on English, where I will be studying a book that I know isn't super widely done in past EEs, but was still popular with a lot of resources available online. That's my issue though, there are a considerable amount of websites like Sparknotes that explain a lot of the themes (it is appropriately complex for an EE though, after asking my supervisor), but I'm a bit worried my choice of book may be a bit uncreative as there are a fair amount of sources online covering it already. Of course, I plan to add some flair and originality, but is this a big cause for concern, and is it an issue if the book is already quite extensively studied…

Hey guys its my first time in this forum so just want to say sorry if I am doing this wrong. But for the Extended Essay I want to look at how I can use managerial economics (including costs, revenue, and profit from Theory of the Firm) to help a family business that started few years ago but I'm not too sure what I can focus on in terms of the main IB content so my research question is kinda general. I'm also kind of worried because my supervisor said this kind of topic is great but students rarely do it (only one has done it so far!). Unfortunately, she didn't say anything else... It's also a two man business so I don't know how the business can scale it up but as f…

Hi all, I'm going through the panic phase of IB where EE and IAs started to thrown at our faces. And I have to come up with a EE topic and subject. One of my option is to take it in Econ HL, my supervisor would be a experienced Econ teacher and EE examiner. However, I don't find Econ nearly as interesting. On the other hand, I thought film studies could be fun. Granted I don't take film studies, but I've been working as a professional cinematographer for the past 5 years, so I theory my knowledge would be far beyond than the scope of IB film. My concern would be the different terminology that's used across the fields (as it seems like they really look for this accord…

Hi. I am currently lost in the depths of how I am going to begin my EE. I was told not to change my topic because of how late it is to start over. My topic is demntia and my teacher advised me to take up on the topic of film. I do not know how to go from here with this topic and how the filmic techniques portray dementia. I want to use the films “Still Alice” and “Away from her.” I was wondering if anyone can help me formulate my body #1 and my subtopics.

Hi all! I am planning on doing an Extended Essay on English A, but I am a bit unsure of what is expected of us in the research process. I'm aware that we are supposed to research some literary criticism/critiques from others, but is this all research in an English A EE entails? Should we also read other works by the author, even if they aren't works we said we'll discuss in our research question? Any other advice on what makes effective research in an English A EE would be appreciated.

Hey. This is my first time posting, so hopefully someone can help me out here. I've just got my Extended Essay proposal back from my supervisor, and she flat out rejected it and said that I need to get something else to write about. The topic of my essay is "To what extent did aviation affect the outcome of WW2?". I would like to write about something regarding aviation and/or the second world war, but there is a lot of pre-existing research on the topic, so it's difficult to find something original to do and I also need to find something that presents an argument, which is a bit difficult because history is pretty straight-forward (to me at least). Can someone help me fi…

So I've finished my EE and it's currently in Managebac, but there's a button that says "request EE approval" and I don't know what my turnitin rating is, nothing's showing up on my managebac for that. My TOK teacher didn't explain anything to us she just said to turn it in to Managebac. She has a habit of not explaining things to us until after they're due and since the EE is a big part of IB I really don't want to mess this up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Basically the title. I'm going to present my research question proposal soon and wondered if looking at the character development of Jaime Lannister across the ASOIAF books is an appropriate EE topic. Are we allowed to look at a series of books, or should I narrow the topic down into something that I can explore in a single book?

I need to submit an EE research question proposal in two weeks. I have decided to choose English Literature as the subject to do my EE and finally settled on the book 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel (so a category 1 english EE). I am having trouble choosing a specific question for that book. I feel like it contains a lot of themes that could be great in analysis but I don't know which one to pick. For examples, I am having trouble picking one of these themes in the book: religion, the struggle for survival, the role of morality in the struggle of survival, anthropomorphism, the parallel between the Pi's story with the animals and the humans, the role of despair and doubt…

Hello, My school is starting the process of writing the EE and I am struggling to understand how far the boundaries of certain subjects go. I am thinking of writing a World Studies EE, but my school doesn't offer certain subjects which I feel my topics would need. - Artistic creativity and its link to madness (Art/Psychology) [we don't have psychology] - Data mining in politics (Global Politics/Computer Science) [we don't have comp science] I am afraid of using terminology that doesn't correspond to the topic I choose. Would the last topic be possible without computer science, at least?

Hi all, I'm in the first year of IB and have started thinking about the EE. After I graduate, I want to get a bachelors in Hospitality Management, specifically for hotels. I want my EE to be about hotel/hospitality management, and have explored the different topics a little bit but all result in very vague research questions. Almost everyone in my HL business management class wants to write their EE with our teacher as supervisor but she won't take more than 10, so there is some competition. Do any of you have suggestions about the topic or area that would be interesting enough for my teacher but that would also benefit me in the future? You don't need to formu…

Hey there, My EE is in Swedish B and I have my RQ as 'How does X Hip hop rapper from 1990s respective to X Hip hop rapper from 2010s use 'the sociolect' to clarify messages?' I tried translating it to English but instead of 'the sociolect' I have actually mentioned the sociolect itself and the rappers namnes as well. I decided to use 3 lyrics (as artifacts) of each rappers and I was supposed to analyse the vocabulary/word choices, then compare them. I have a total of 3 books to support me (excluding other internet resources), where one of them is a researcher into this specific sociolect and the other is a researcher of sociolinguists. Hi guys, So I decided on focusing on my EE in Language and Literature. I am a Junior in IB and take Language and Literature as one of my HL's, and in 10th grade, my school opted for the external IB examinations, which I actually scored well at. However, I shifted schools, and my current school does not have as high of a level of IB as my old school did. Now, I've been researching on the tips and pointers to get an A in an english EE, and I had a question. Will it be better if I do my extended essay by comparing two works, or using TWO works with similar ideas to support each other? OR Do I just focus on one work? Hey there, I have just met with my supervisor for the EE and he told me to fix my research question by making it clearer for the examinor to understand what I will be discussing in my essay. Here's my RQ: I tried my best to convey what I want to talk about in the essay but he told me that I need to use better words to clarify this part "work independently in their own context". I want to say that both books are meant for different audiences from different fields (one's for a poet, and the other is for the son of the writer talking about modern problems). What can I write to convey what I want to say in the clearest way possible? Thank you in advance

So my WSEE is on equality and inequality with topics focusing on history and film. Are there any specific rubrics for this, or would I just follow the general WSEE rubric? And I read on a rubric that if I use history, I "must use the skills of the historian such as establishing causation, partiality, reliability of sources etc". How would this apply to the film aspect (film terminology, etc.)?

My subject for the EE is chemistry, and I was wondering how far I can stretch that subject to apply to other subjects. My main idea is that I should study how cottonmouth venom is synthesized into an antivenom. The final topic is due tomorrow. However, there are a lot of problems with this topic. First of all, my TOK teacher (not my subject supervisor) told me that this topic leans too heavily into biology, but he isn’t the best resource on scientific EEs, which he admitted to me personally. Second of all, venom is a toxic chemical. Am I allowed to study this, even though I don’t plan to do am experiment myself? The subject says explicitly that toxic and dangerous chemica…
