Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Soon it’s time for the to choose subject for EE. I would like to hear your advice. In the future my goal would be to study Business. However, I’m not doing EE on Economics as I think I have enough studying in it with all the IA’s. Psychology is one possible, like doing topic eg ”psychology in business / negotiation” but I’m not sure whether it will benefit me enough, as it’s mostly about theories and studies in Psychology. English would be the last option. I heard it would be easy to get good grade, am I right? I’m good at analyzing stuff, but the question is about what topic I would choose in English. Eventually, are US/UK universities interested in what my EE topi…

Hi, I'm doing an extended essay about a book. I did a lot of researches and I have like 15 sources (including the definitions I searched). Is it "bad" that I researched so much ? Like, it's literature and I read somewhere that it shouldn't be too much sources and there should be more thinking and analysis from the person who is writing an EE in literature. Thank you advance, I'm really nervous

Hi! I wanted to know your opinion about my problem: I'm writing an extended essay in literature and I wrote about smth I read on the internet. Like, I took the main idea but I didn't write the way the person wrote it. Should I still cite the source or can I keep it as it was my idea? Thank you in advance for your answers!

I changed the subject of Extend Essay from math to language A in the September of 2nd IB, how to write reflection in this case. Should i write the first reflection about math, and then explain that i changed it to language A in the 2nd reflection. Or should i write explain it in the first reflection to make sure that the reflection shows how i work out the final job so don´t waste too much words on the first idea . Since my languageA is in Chinese, my math is in English. If i need to write the first reflection about math, should i use English or Chinese?

Hello guys, I just realised that I made a mistake while using a formula for my science EE. I used a formula that proved my hypothesis, but for a slightly different reason than the one I thought and justified. I was not "supposed" to use this formula because it didn't match with my theory. Long story short, the reason why it proved my hypothesis was exactly that it didn't match with the theory. But I thought that it proved my hypothesis for a different reason. So this is clearly a mistake I made. My EE supervisor didn't say anything (I don't know if he noticed it or not). Is this a reason to fail the EE, or will I just lose points for this? I'm hoping that this …

At first I was intending to investigate the effects of vinegar of various kinds on human health, since it is a very open-ended topic I can work with. In accordance to this purpose, I calculated their enthalpy changes of neutralization with 1mol NaOH and conductivity WITHOUT DEALING W/ ANYTHING ON THE PH, following the path of "CH3COONa formed after the reaction affecs the strenght of the acid in X way and therefore changes the blood pH slightly/tremendously in large amounts blah blah blah". I haven't even started and it's due in 2 days lmao so I might add a bit more perspective than just blood. It's safe to procrastinate here, right? However, I'm concerned that it wo…

"In what way did the Stalin-Era communist principles differ from Karl Marx's?" Obviously this is just something I thought of randomly and so the wording isn't what I'd want for the final product, but I was wondering if it was too vague or too specific?

I need to change my RQ a little bit probably... I know it is not good to make an EE of science without doing experiments yourself, but I won't change my mind. My RQ is Why are the physicochemical effects of celestial bodies important to generation of life? I will narrow the life, but I don't know if I should focus on a certain physical or chemical effect, since the information might not be enough. Celestial bodies I think maybe using one astro, or using more and comparing them.(I think Jovial and/or Saturnine systems). Would appreciate some help...

The current topic of my current chemistry extended essay is the optimisation of the voltage produced by a half-cell by changing the temperature and electrolyte of the cell and using that to mathematically model the output voltage produced by the cell as a function of those variables. However, during research I learnt about the existence of the Nernst Equation and realised I was simply investigating that. I also found a few threads online of people who did this topic as an IA instead of an extended essay which leads me to fear my Extended Essay topic is too simple. Could anyone give me advice on whether this would be a suitable extended essay topic. If not, are there…

I'm currently working on 2 different EE topics right now because one seems to be too hard, whereas the other one is too easy. My supervisor is new so is unable to offer any help. The harder topic is on the illegal waste disposal in southern Italy (economics and chemistry) and I wanted to look at how the burning of waste in landfills happens and is harmful/how it contaminates the environment. Then I would talk about the tax Italy has on waste and how does it influence this. The alternative would be to talk about diesel (still chemistry and economics): why does it work better in cars than gasoline, what are the products of its combustion, and why are they harmful. The…

Hello! I read online that when you cite an online source for the EE, you ought to write the date when you last accessed this source. I wrote my EE in Chemistry, and I used some online sources, but since the referencing style I used was APA6, I did not write the date when I accessed my sources. I only followed the structure of APA6. That is, I wrote in-text citations like (author, year, p. number) for printed sources, followed by a reference in the end as: Author. (Date). Name of book (edition). City, state: publisher. Now, for online sources I wrote the in text citations as: (author, year), and in the references section I wrote the reference as: Author. (Date). …

Hey, I don't have a lot of time and I'm desperately searching for my EE topic. I've been thinking about applications of continued fractions or looking for the best way to define pi number by probability. I dunno what to do with the first topic to show my personal engagement and I'm not sure whether the second idea isn't too simple and should be used rather to write an IA. Hi everyone, I am struggling to find sources for my EE, they are either too expensive or unreliable. Especially when I am trying to find sheet music for a song. For example, I am trying to find a full version of "I'm Forest...Forest Gump" sheet music by Alan Silvestir but all I could find is sheet music for piano only. If I want full versions of every instrument(just like when you do an analysis on a classical score), where can I find them. Free ones would be great! Thank you guys

Hello! For my Physics EE, I referenced every theory I used etc, but I also referenced the formulas. For example, I would write Newton's second law, and then I'd reference a book where this formula can be found, followed by an exact page. I did that for every formula pretty much. Is this a problem? I know that in some cases referencing even the basic formulas is not necessary to do, but my question is, will it be a problem that I did this? Thanks in advance!

I have a few more days until I have to decide on my Extended essay topic. I am torn between choosing Business (HL) or English (SL), but I'm not sure if I can do my extended essay for an SL class. I most likely want to study Business or marketing in university; however, I just thought about a really interesting idea for an extended essay that only applies to my English Lang&Lit subject. I know it'll be better for me to pick Business as that is the direction I want to go towards to in the future, but I feel like I will be way more interested in writing my extended essay in English.

Hello! I read somewhere in this group that ManageBac has a plagiarism checker of some sort. My school is using ManageBac, but other than that I doubt that they will use any plagiarism checker to scan our EE, which worries me. I really want my EE (and ToK Essay and IAs) to be scanned before turned in to the IB. This is why I would like some further information on ManageBac's plagiarism checker. Does my school have to purchase it seperately? (because if so, I doubt it will). Hello! For my EE, I used a picture, but the website where I found it says "all rights reserved". My question is, can I still use the picture as long as I reference it, and provide the link of the website where I found it, along with acknowledging the author? I am aware of the "fair use" law, but I don't live in the US. I live in Hungary, and I'm from Greece. Will I still be covered by this law? Or by a similar one? I have no intent of "harming" the owner of the photograph, I don't present it as my own, and I'm using it for academic purposes. Is it fine that I used the picture, since I acknowledged that it's not my work? I have already submitted the EE, so dele…

Hello everyone, I'm currently writing my chemistry EE and in the middle of lowering my word count. However, I had an urgent question that really confused me. I have a large table outlining all of my experimental variables that's quite long (686 words)-- would this contribute towards my word count? I know the IB says that tables aren't included in the word count, but then I also came across a section in the IB guide that states "tables with significant words should be included as part of the word count." So, does anyone know for certain whether or not my variable table counts towards the word count? A fast response would be very much appreciated. Thank …

Hello! For my EE, I included a picture, but I'm not sure if I cited it properly. I'm using APA format. I got the picture from an online website, namely an online article which contained this image. Officially, for APA format I need to write the image's CREATOR'S name. But what I did in my references section, was to reference the website as I would normally reference a website, and I wrote [Digital Image] afterwards to show that from the said website, I got the said image. In the in-text citation I used the citation that I would use to reference the website itself. So, (author name, year). Would that be fine? I mean, referencing the website from where I r…

Hello, I'm half way through my first year in the DP and I'm still struggling to find an interesting topic for EE on English. I wanted to take a look at The Great Gatsby, The Yellow Wallpaper or The Lord of the Flies but my sister recommended me not to do so because these texts are studied throughout the years of IB and the markers would expect an exceptional outcome towards the essay; essentially making it a little difficult for me to ace. I'm currently reading about Burmese Days by George Orwell, it talks a lot about gender, race, culture, imperialism and etc. but I'm not too sure if I'll be sticking to this one. Hey! I wrote my EE in Physics, and I counted the words to be 3989, so that's what I wrote it is. But honestly, there is a high chance that I miscounted something, cause the word count gets confusing with whether I should include certain formulas, in-text formulas, headings, equation numberings, sub-headings, footones, in-text citations etc etc (you get the point.). I tried to be as correct as possible with this, but many of my teachers gave me contradicting information, and the internet didn't help that much either. So it's more than likely that I actually have a different word count than 3989, I'd say something ranging from 3950 to 4020. Will there be severe consequ…

Hi, I want to write my extended essay for English B, and my topic is about the book and the film "Gone with the wind", I choose it because I love this book and I read it for several times. I have a research question: To what extent does Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell show the theme of racism in US culture? But I'm not sure this is good enough or not to discuss and since I'm not from the US, I don't really know the American culture. I also want to talk about the sexism, do you think talk about sexism is better than racism? OR DO I NEED TO CHANGE TO A BETTER RESEARCH QUESTION? please help me to value, thank u and love u guys!

Hey! I used APA format for my EE, but I realised I made a small mistake. When you use APA format, you need to provide the year of publication. But for one source (out of the about 15 I used) I accidentally put in a wrong date. It said that the article was last modified in 2018, so I put 2018 as a date. But I found out that this is not supposed to be the date of publication, and therefore I should have put (n.d.). What's the severest consequence that may follow after this? Should I worry? Thanks!

I have no idea what subject I want to do my extended essay in but, I have a question. My friend recommended that I go the history route with it; however I have no idea how to do that. Here’s my question: "To what extent was the use of human cadavers in automotive research, from 1960 to 1980, successful in improving the safety of vehicles?" I did submit this question to my history teacher to get his opinion and he said it wouldn’t work for history. I’m not really interested in anything else so someone please help me figure this out!

Hey! So I just submitted my physics EE, and I found out about the general concept of plagiarism and I'm kind of freaking out. So what happened is, I have a completely original topic for my EE, which I have done completely on my own. BUT, some parts of it coincide with an existing EE (which has a completely different, yet similar RQ). To be more specific, I have 6 sections, and only the 5th and 6th ones share some similarities. Now, since it is physics, the similarities is just using and explaining the theory. However, I have explained the theory in a relatively different context (as my RQ was different). But still, it being the same theory, there are inevitably a number o…

Hi there, first time posting here. I'm writing a history EE (on primatologist Jane Goodall) and my plan is to do a few pages of exposition and then get into analysis. First, I was going to give a general overview of Goodall's life and stuff, and then get into my question (how did Goodall's individuality contribute to her success). Does that make sense? Does it go against some prescribed structure?

So, I was doing an extended essay in Chemistry, but that didn't work out. Now I switched to English. I want to analyze two dystopian novels, and although I love 1984 I'm nervous that so many people write about it every year. I was thinking about using Oryx and Crake, by Margret Atwood, and 1984 (even though I'm hesitant I've already read it). My supervisor said it would be fine to use such a 'classic' as long as I can focus my essay on something interesting, and not as obvious. As for the actual essay I was thinking about comparing the romance in the two books, or just the relationships between men and much younger girls, maybe I could compare this? I was also thinking c…

Hello, My EE is due tomorrow (exams May 2019). Unfortunately, I do not know if there is a specific way to format the cover page for a history essay-- my supervisor was unclear! I know that I need the research question, word count, and say the fact that it's a history essay, but past that, I'm unsure if there is anything else I need to include.
