Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

How original should the research question be? So, I came up with an idea and decided to carry on with it but then I came across an old essay which is quite similar. Is it fine if I take the same question but change the company (the question is about) and a few other things like one part of it (while the other one will be similar)? The EE was on Business Management btw.

Hi, I'm doing my EE work on mold growth rates in bread, more specifically on the effect salt has on them. I'm proposing that an exponential function could model the growth rates. I used Logger Pro to do curve fits for all my data sets, and I got curves with root mean square errors of 1.729 , 1.730 and 0.3291. I'm wondering if I can use those values somehow to support my theory of exponential growth. Thanks in advance.

I''m having a bit of trouble with thinking of possible research questions for my architecture EE. So far I have two possible ones, and even now I'm not sure if they are worded correctly, (1) "To what extent was Frank Lloyd Wright's use of his natural sources around him the inspiration of his designs?" and (2) "To what extent were other architecture's works reflected upon by Frank Lloyd Wright's builds?"

It is the first of December of my first year and I have still not even picked any material to analyze for my EE, as each one of my ideas gets rejected to the point that I am out of options. I have selected Perfume, A Clockwork Orange, Berserk, The Hobbit and some others, and each one just does not sit right with my supervisor. She instead gave me two books to work on, A Pearl by Steinbeck and The Old Man And The Sea by Hemingway, which... really haven't been able to interest me enough to analyze. Besides, they are simply not the genre that I am interested in. I have recently asked my supervisor about the option to analyze Carrie by Stephen King, but she gave me a vague an…

I know that the essay is suppose to be Intro Thesis statement argument 1 argument 2 argument 3 (continue till you are happy with the number of arguments) conclusion However, my question is mainly centered around the body part, how should they be formatted? Should it be in terms of for example, Lets say I'm arguing that causes and effects of the Mexican-American war (I'm not doing this but just an example) Would for example I follow this way for each argument? Point: Evidence: Explain (briefly): Evidence (again): Explai…

My EE RQ is due soon and my question so far is "To what extent did WWII lead to the decolonization of India?" But I've been told that's not specific enough. Can someone help making it more specific? I thought of "To what extent did WWII lead to the British Decolonization of India by 1947?" But I dont know.

Hey guys I'm doing a history EE on the south african apartheid, my question is already approved and I have some points to talk about I just want to know if they are good/if I forgot anything import To what extent was Nelson Mandela responsible for the transition from apartheid to democracy in South Africa by 1995? Although Nelson Mandela served a profound impact in the process of transitioning apartheid to democracy, other factors played an equal if not more profound role in the transition. Other Factors I'll talk about: During the 1980 sustained protests, gorilla attacks, International pressure and economic decline we can the aparth…

Hi, toward the end of my junior year I was told to pick an extended essay topic. I picked a random topic because they didn't tell us that we needed to do that until the last minute as usual. It's the beginning of my senior year and now that I actually have to write about the topic I'm so bored and would like to write about something else under the same subject but I'm not sure if it's too late to change it. I'm afraid to ask because my school gaslights the IB students and pretty much gives us no support. We weren't told anything about IB until our junior year and now we're all struggling. Edit: I was able to change my topic

Hey, I´m currently starting my DP2 year and I really need to start working on my EE. I´m doing my EE in English language and literature. The topic of my EE currently is "Represantation of societal problems in rap music" this means that my EE falls in the category 3. I´ve been trying really hard to find a sample EE in this category, but I just can´t find any . If anyone has written their EE in this category or written an EE about song text analysis I would be super thankful if you could share it with me, because right now I honestly have absolutly no clue what I´m supposed to do.

I would like to write my EE about architecture. However I don't want to do that in visual arts but in a different subject such as Geography for example. A question I have thought of is "To what extend does the structure and shape of a construction influence the renewable heat requirement of a building?" Is it possible to formulate a similar question so it fits the criteria for an EE in Geography? Do you have any general suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I would like to write my extended essay about architecture, but as we don't have helpful visual arts teacher at our school I would actually like to write about it in a different subject such as Geography or English B. I have already thought of a research question (not finished though). It was "To what extend does the structure and shape of a construction influence the renewable heat requirement of a building?" Can someone please tell me how I could use this kind of topic in an IB subject.

Hey guys, I need advise or opinions on my Physics EE plan. I’m considering about investigating the effect of drag force and Magnus effect on a projectile motion of a tennis ball. Is this a advisable EE topic, or is it too simple for an EE? I was worried if this fits more on an IA rather than an EE. Thanks a lot!

So I'm doing a math EE and I my topic is stress on students and their coping habits. My problem is with the topic of my EE, I'm concerned about it because with the evidence and data that I've collected for my research, I'm not able to actually calculate any math with it. So I've come to the conclusion that I need to change the topic entirely to allow me to do some actually math in my data. I remember reading somewhere that math EE's can revolve around statistics and so my research that I've collected are mainly just statistics on student stress but I cannot do any actual math with it because they are stand alone statistics. So the advice that I'm looking for is whether …

I'm struggling to understand the "categories" section of the extended essay guide. As far as I understand, if you're writing your essay in language A1 you have to study either ONLY works originally written in your own language OR compare at least one work written in your own language with another work translated from another language. Is this correct?? I'm worried for two reasons here. My topic is the significance of a particular trait in fairy tale characters, and I'm comparing a broad range of fairy tales from different countries, focusing only on their treatment of that particular trait. But it's not really context-focused at all. Firstly, is it okay that I'm not study…

Hi everyone, I currently have my English A (language and literature) EE introduction 520 words long. However, in the EE course companion, the recommended word count is maximum of 450 words for intro, so my supervisor wants me to delete some parts of it. But I have seen on the Internet that people had more than 600 words and it wasn't a big deal, however, it was years ago, so I'm not sure whether it holds today. Could anyone help please? Is it necessary to have the maximum of 450 words for EE introduction or is it ok to have more?

So my supervisor and I talked over my last EE topic idea, and we've arisen with more doubts, so now I'm desperately trying to piece together a new idea before summer break starts and I won't be able to discuss it with my supervisor anymore. (I'm planning to get most of my first draft done over the summer.) Now I'm thinking of doing the use of symbolism and motifs in the portrayal of the theme of individuality vs. societal expectations in the first 3-4 novels of the Anne of Green Gable series. (So Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, and then Anne of Windy Poplars if I still need more material.) I'm worried that I've fallen into the vortex of doing a …

I had a physics EE topic in mind of the effect of heat on buoyancy of various liquids. Is this a topic worthy of an extended essay? I also had another topic in mind but my teacher said it was more appropriate for the Physics IA, which was, comparing the value of g obtained using a bifilar pendulum with the value of g obtained using a simple pendulum.

Hello, For long story short, I'm currently trying to come up with an EE question. I really would like to do something on the feminist movement in the 60s, but I don't really know how to formulate a question. For some extra context, I was maybe going to try to focus specifically on the reproductive rights aspect of the feminist movement (ex. increased access to birth control, abortion, etc.) but I don't know if focusing on an aspect like that would make my essay too narrow? If anyone could help that would be really appreciated because as I'm standing now i'm stuck at a roadblock.

So I am on my analysis for the Bio EE and I'm stuck. I did yeast fermentation but the problem is the yeast fermented fructose faster than glucose. From research, it seems glucose should be faster than fructose. Of course, this could have been due to uncertainty or lab error but I'm not sure how to explain either phenomenon. How could they be fermented differently if they're both monosaccharides? Thanks!

Hey so im facing a little bit of a problem, i wanted to do my EE on the effects of different over counter antacids (stomach acid nullifiers) on the effectiveness of the enzyme pepsin in digestion of egg whites (the idea was that antacids will alter the PH of the simulated stomach acid resulting in decreased enzyme effective) but the more I reaserch on this the more lost I am. Do you guys think this idea is feasible/logical? if not is there any other variable I could use instead of antacids to investigate pepsin effectivity in digestion? any help would be greatly appreciated?

The research question I have chosen for my Extended Essay is "Do common commercial pesticides stunt the germination and growth time of Phaseolus vulgaris (the common bean)?" I am planning on buying 5-10 bean seeds and testing different pesticides on each sample, and then measuring the rate of germination and the time it takes for the bean to grow stalks (having another sample with no pesticides as a control group, of course). My teacher didn't gave me a solid comment but just said it was good for a whole time until now and he changed his mind and he is like lt is too simple. So is there any way or ideas I can make it a little complicated which eventually give me more things to write? My EE research question: To what extent does changing the surface temperature of an object affect static friction? I have already did a primary data-collection. (the experiment. So preferably changes that I can use the data I collected will be good.) Please help me. . . .

hi there, I am a pre-ib student, I start ib1 in a couple months but want to get a good grasp on the course before I even start. I have picked all my subjects but one thing that irks me is the ee (extended essay). I am looking into different topics at the moment and I found one that could be really interesting, however I am looking to get more opinions and advice on my topic. I am looking into doing a phycology ee and my main focus would be based around, "Is the bond between a mother and a child solely based on psychological need or comfort?" Essentially, do infants only bond with their mothers for food or for comfort. Harlow's monkey experiments are going to be…

Finding good sources for the actual structure of the Economics Extended Essay is incredibly difficult and I'm getting a lot of conflicting info. Some sites say that you should include an "evaluation" section and a "Economic Theory" Section, the IB itself specifically says not to? Does anybody know where I could get an outline specifically for economics that is up-to-date, and not too broad like the general one from the IB? Thanks!

so, for my EE I'm doing something along the lines of "do modern fictional/fantasy stories follow Joseph Campbell's the heroes Journey" and I'm slightly struggling with the structure. I'm not sure whether I should summarize my two book series first, or whether I should write anything before hand in the main body. I'm also unsure of whether to keep on cycling between both books and talking about how they fit / don't fit in the narrative archetype or not. I'm genuinely not even sure if it's even a good topic to write about as I can't for the life of me think of a good way to start the writing itself. Thanks in advance for any replies!

I'm planning to explore anaerobic digestion and the production of methane from different compositions of organic food waste. I could create a small biodigester and use different feedstocks for each experiement. I was also thinking if I could get a methane gas analyzer, I could track the volume/ concentration of methane over time and do something regarding the kinetics of anaerobic digestion. The composition of the waste could be determined by CHNSO contents or % ratio of carbohydrate, protein, lipid. Is the essay viable?

it's already mid-august, and i haven't gotten much done (if anything) for my history ee. i am focusing on the vietnam war; my question is "to what extent was the ho chi minh trail a significant factor to the victory of north vietnam" i've been looking up articles and such for debates and different perspectives, but maybe i haven't been searching hard enough because there is practically nothing that satisfies my question, which has started to make me more and more anxious about completing the ee. i can't get a hold of my supervisor to help me narrow down my question and guide my question a little more.
