  1. Heya, So in the beginning of IB11, my teacher advised us all to do an IA on a topic we actually like and are interested in. I had two main ideas in mind, one was doing an experiment on something related to hurling - a Gaelic sport which I've recently picked up through the wonders of CAS, and the other idea was doing something related to solar power - because I'm big on renewables and my dad used to be a lobbyist for solar power companies. My teacher said no to the hurling idea because he thought it would be too hard to find enough controlled variables, so I went with the solar power topic.
  2. Hello. I've been trying to find a topic and research question for my extended essay but I have been unable to do. I have found an experimental technique in the calorimeter which measures energy content/calories and I want to measure energy contents in different foods but I do not know what I should investigate specifically and expand on this. I don't want it to be as simple as "as x increases, y increases". Testing out different foods and seeing which one(s) have the higher calories is way too simple and I'm basically stuck..Please help!
  3. Hi guys, I've been in DP for about 3 months now and have been taking HL Econ, Chem and Bio. My first Chem test is coming up next week and I am completely screwed. My teacher is a nice guy, but he doesn't teach properly ( first few weeks was just him filling in the workbook that he gave us) , or as well as he could in comparison to the other chem teacher that creates powerpoints, teaching videos etc. I have have found Chem so difficult and will have to go through the whole unit again before my test.. Anyways, I only chose Chem because I thought that Hl chem and bio were subjects that
  4. Hello! So i'm a new year 1 IB student and it has just been 2 months into school and im already thinking of dropping ib...i feel very stress about it and with the online class, i feel like its not helping me. i also just moved to a new school thus i'm more stressed out about the entire situation. i feel like the school im in might not be the suitable community for me as i feel like its too big.. also they're all very smart. apart from that, there are also some small factors that are making me feel not motivated to continue ib. what should i do? should i just change to a new school for year 2 or
  5. Hello. I was wondering wether I should take AI SL or AA SL. I enjoy calculus and algebra more than statistics but I am not that comfortable with non calc. However I am worried that medical unis might not prefer AI SL? Would it be better to take AI SL and get a 7 or AA sl and get a 5/6? Thanks in advance
  6. I am a certificate student and currently taking IB Chemistry HL, Biology SL, English SL and Math SL. I feel like l'm taking all the core subjects in IB but I won't get a diploma since I am a certificate student. I'm planning to study medical science but would certificates for these courses also help getting into competitive universities? I mean I don't regret taking certificate courses but some other full ib kids tell me that my choices are stupid :(
  7. Hey! What do the CalTech Admissions people look for in a candidate? How do I maximise my chances of getting in? Any CalTech Alumni here, I would love your advice.
  8. Hello I'm a new DP 1 student and I started looking for ideas for my EE. I decided to pursue chemistry as my subject and I have a solid topic in mind, but it's not wide enough. I'm going to investigate differents cuts of meat of different ages and I'll compare the values of protein and fats in each. What can I do else? And how can I make this a proper topic? What experiments can I execute? If you're not allowed to help me, just tell me how I can find the experiment needed... Thank you in advance.
  9. my HOTA IA is due next Thursday and. I'm. Struggling. I wanted to do something in regards to the cherokee nation because my great grandmother was a cherokee indian. I came up with the question: "To what extent did the trail of tears affect the women of the cherokee indians" but my teacher told me it was too broad and to focus in on one of the tribes instead. so I came up with the question: "To what extent did the Trail of Tears affect the passing down of traditions in the wolf clan of the cherokee indians?" She said it was alright, but I'm struggling to find information on it and I really don'
  10. I am currently in my first semester of grade 11's and am getting 3's rather than straight 7's in all my subjects. Is it alright if I'm failing most of my subjects for my first semester? I have taken the subjects HL Maths, HL Physics, HL Comp Sci, SL Bus & Man, SL Eng Lang Lit, and SL Spanish B. Will I ever improve or am I also going to fail my IB exams in May of 2020?
  11. "To what extent was the cold war responsible for the separation between North Korea and South Korea?" is this too broad? please someone help how i should phrase my research question. I really do have interest and a lot of knowledge in this area (the Korean War) & (The Cold War)
  12. Hey, I'm from Kazakhstan and currently in the 11th grade (first DP year) and I started to worry about getting in university just at the beginning of this academic year. I'm interested particularly in Japanese and Korean universities because of the culture of this nations, but.. last year I had GPA ~3.2 and generally can not boast of really high academic achievements. I picked Math, Comp. Science HL and Physics SL and aiming to be a programmer (maybe in software development). Also, I want to know what are the chances of getting full scholarships in both countries. I have spent enough time
  13. Hi, I am an 8th grader and I have been planning to go into the IB program once I am a junior. At the high school I am going to go, you are required to be in the Pre-IB/ Scholars program to register into the actual IBDP. A lot of my friends have told me not to and that I will have no social life if I do this. However, I knew someone who did the IBDP while playing basketball and working. I would like to know if it is really as burdening as people make it sound. (I know it is different for everyone depending on personal choices) I would also like to know what subjects would be best for me to take
  14. I'm doing my 11th grade right now and I've changed syllabus from a national syllabus to the IB. I'm clueless about the expectations, nature of IB and almost everything regarding it. My current school that I've moved into, by itself is new and not very experienced, hence lack in providing the students with clear guidance. The performance of the previous 3 batches was not satisfactory as well. The students in the school are not very willing to provide me with apt guidance as they are very busy themselves. I understand that it is a lot to ask for but I'd be very, very, VERY grateful if someone wh
  15. So my TOK teacher informed us that we're not permitted to submit the TOK presentation in a form of a video, only a PowerPoint presentation is accepted by the IB. I was a bit conflicted by this new information so I asked the librarian and he said that we're allowed, as long as we present ourselves throughout the video occasionally. And then for a confirmation, I inquired the IB Coordinator and she said we're not allowed to use a video as our final presentation. So should I follow what my IB Coordinator said or should I just do what's easier for me and make a video?
  16. Hi I have to do a supervised writing on women at point zero by Nawal El Saadawi and I have 0 idea wha the prompt will be. Any advice on what to do in order to prepare and how to ace the supervised writing ?
  17. Hello! I am starting my first year of pre-IB in two weeks or so (the fourth of September) and I’m quite anxious about it. I’ve been doing a lot of math sheets and reading material that the school has suggested all pre-IB students do. I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice for me, or any advice specifically for pre-IB students. Basically, anything you’ve done in pre-IB that was stupid that (hopefully) I can avoid. Thanks!
  18. Hello everyone, I am currently in my fifth week of IB Year 1 and I have gotten settled with my new teachers and classes. I have set a goal for myself to get at least 40 points in the IB, but I do know that it will be tough and will require the right mentality (I'm working on it!). So, I wanted to come here and ask if any of you more experienced IB students had some advice or helpful tips for any of my subjects: IB Math HL IB Physics HL IB Economics HL IB Computer Science SL IB German B SL IB English Language and Literature SL Any help (inc
  19. Hi! So my math sl ia is due sometime soon, and I can't seem to get started with it. This is the fifth time I've changed my topic, so I've wasted quite a lot of time. I finally decided to do my math sl ia on this topic: Modelling the development of swimming performance in the Asian Games.I'm planning to focus on the gold medal winning times in the women's 50 and 100 freestyle. However, I'm not sure on what mathematical concepts and processes I'm supposed to use to model it. I've read a lot of literature on it, but I still don't quite grasp the concept of how to model it. I've tried a
  20. So I'm considering dropping Chem HL down to either Chem SL, Art SL, or Film SL (Online). I'm thinking of studying computer science but I found out that I don't actually need Chem for the universities I'm planning on applying too. I would say that I'm more creative than technical (Math and etc) but I love technology (interested in VR and design aspect of tech). I'm starting to struggle in Chem HL because my teacher isn't good but I have tried self studying but I don't think I can maintain good grades if I continue. (Also my math and physics teacher isn't good as well so I have to stud
  21. Hi I'm taking ib physics and ib chemistry sl at my school next year both at once. Any advice and I mean anything at all. Also is there any way to prepare for it over the summer because I'm scared. Anybody whos taken them before please help me, whats the toughest part about each course. How can i overcome it?
  22. Hello, I'm kinda freaking out as I am a perfectionist who wishes to find the best way to organize my way through IB (I'm starting it in August). My HL's (Math, Physics, Psych) and my SL's (Lang & Lit, Mandarin, Econ). What supplies should I buy to best prepare for these such as binders and notebooks. (I'm already buying an accordion folder btw) Also advice for any of these topics is very much appreciated. (ex. homework load, amount of worksheets handed out, how hard the class is in general) + general tips on CAS and my EE would be amazing Thanks in advance !
  23. Hey! So I was both happy and unhappy with some of my exam grades for my mocks. I was unhappy mostly with my biology and math mock exam grades, my first exam is Math, on May 2. I was wondering, is it possible to highly improve on the real exams then mocks? I am applying in Australia so only my real exam grades matter. Has anyone really improved on their real exams compared to their mocks?
  24. Hi! I am writing my EE in biology and I would really appreciate getting some advice from people who have done it in the past. What was hard for you in the process? How did you solve it? Is there anything that you think would have been helpfull to know earlier in the process? General advice and so on would be really helpfull for me both regarding the writing of the essay and the lab. Thank you
  25. I've taken Biology, Chemistry and Business management HL along with English Maths and French (ab) SL. I study IB in India and I would like to know about my options. Medical is the first thing to come to mind but that would require Physics and I do not want to take it up. I am planning to study in India because my dad doesn't want me to study abroad for god knows why and I was wondering what course I could take in Indian colleges I am aware that abroad universities do not require Physics for studying medicine
