Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Let's say my research question was set up something like this (not the actual question I want to use and very broad): "To what extent did the (historical economic practice) of (country) influence (country's) modern (economic practices)?" What I'm concerned about is whether examiners will remove marks for partially focusing on events closer to modern times. Would they think that I'm straying from the subject if I analyze modern events in relation to historical ones (or vice versa)? I know that in a philosophical sense, everything that has already happened is history, however I think that goes beyond both the point of a history EE and what the examiners expect fro…

So my idea is to test how efficient cleaning products work (soapy water, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, rubbing alcohol, etc.) by basically growing a few petri dishes of bacteria and then putting each substance on the bacterial growth and analyzing results. What do you guys think? Too simple? Any thoughts or tips at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everybody, My school does not offer an IB Film course but I am interested in writing an EE about Studio Ghibli films and the themes of self-discovery and maturity. I've heard that some people don't recommend doing an EE on a subject that you don't take as a class but I wanted more insight if other people would also not recommend me to do that. I'm also interested on how hard the grading for the a film EE would be in relative to, let's say, a History EE. I would to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much, idontknowanymore

I am very fascinated with escape rooms, and I thought that studying them for an extended essay might be interesting. I want to compare the immersive storytelling experience of an escape room with a second-hand experience, like watching a movie or reading a book, but I'm not sure how to work that into a topic. Could I make that into an English essay? The other idea I had was to talk about the gamification of classrooms with escape rooms, but I think that might be too narrow. Thoughts on either of these topics?

Hey, Im currently in Grade 11 and we've just been introduced to our EE and I've decided I wanted to do mine in Economics even though humanities essays are considered more difficult. I need to make a proposal to my economics teacher by this week since he's very sought after and teaches two subjects so if anyone could let me know whether my idea is suitable it would be much appreciated. Basically, in my essay I wanted to talk about Brexit and the fall of the pound as a result of this and I wanted to link it to either Income of British expats in Abu Dhabi (local context) however i thought that this might've been too specific even though its easy to get primary dat…

I was told, not too long ago, i had to restart my ee, and our first draft is due in a week from now. I was told to do it in physics but i just cannot find any nice questions for it. I am interested in gravity and electricity, but i dont know what i could write about that fit under these topics. Maybe investigating some interesting property, but idk. Does anyone know any interesting topics i could focus on, or if you have exemplar questions that would be highly appreciated. I just feel like im kinda screwed. I am pretty sure I will get an extension but I just feel so stressed right now. ps. my previous topic was on general relativity, but it was too difficult …

Right. So. I have the essay. It's around 3500 words at the moment which is pretty great because I have space for this, but my supervisor told me to completely re-do my introduction. I get why and I have a plan on what to include in it, I just can't come up with a way to start the introduction. So I'm literally stuck on the first sentence of my EE. I'd like to ask if anyone could share the first one or two sentences of their EEs, it'd help lots for some inspiration! If it's of any interest, my research question is "How does the sociocultural context affect the development of mental illness in [novel 1] and [novel 2]?" and I'm focusing on the aspects of family and…

Hello, Thank you for taking time to help me out. So I plan on making an Extended Essay on Economics. I have came up with a research question but I am not sure about how I will go on answering it by providing resources, data, graphs etc. My Research Question is: UAE introduced VAT in the beginning of 2018. It is a very interesting topic that is interesting for me. However, I do not know what kind of resources and evidence would help me. First of all, is the research question good (is it specific enough?) and what are some of the topics I can look at to help me answer my question.

Hi, I'm in a bad place right now where I don't know where to go... I have decided to write my Extended Essay on Psychology but I have had to restart my RQ and proposal 2 times... I've finally decided to write it on Behavior and childhood trauma and if there is any correlation. The issue is, my supervisor is completely useless and he's not pushing me or anything which leads me to become unmotivated to take action because I simply get no guidance what so ever from him. So I just put my EE through turnitin and it came back with 9% similar. Is the fact that this percentage is low compared to the 20% that we're allowed to reach something to take note of because my supervisor is constantly stressing the fact that this is in the end a research essay and the low percentage could mean a lack of evidence and quotations?

So I'm pretty sure that I'm going to do my EE in astronomical spectroscopy, but I'm having trouble coming up with a viable research question (especially as I can't really do an experiment for this, so I want to make sure I have a lot to work with to still get a good grade). I'm thinking of doing something about how we pull information such as the magnetic field strength from where the light originates through astronomical spectroscopy... does anyone have advice on how to narrow down on this, or on what sort of question I should lean towards to work to get a good grade despite the lack of an experiment?

Hi! I have been very confused about collecting data for my bio EE. There isn't much time left either. Hello, I need help deciding what topics to pursue. The topic I really want to do is how do the different isomers of butanol affect the yield of carboxylic acid in primary alcohol oxidation. I am planning to do some reflux experiments with this. Unfortunately, I thought this topic was well researched but it seems perhaps the mechanism has ok research but not the compound. So I am having research problems, but I can probably generate more theory since I essentially will talk about elements of molecular geometry that affect its oxidation. I have abundant ideas of further research topics for this if I down this route (ex. what if I use phenol or what if its the same formula b…

I'm doing a bio ee and I gathered and processed all the data but I'm facing a dilemma, what should I do if there is no correlation/relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable? I'm really scared that I'm going to fail, I'm hoping to get a B but I'd be happy with a C... Can someone that has experienced this give me some advice?? should I fake the data or should I explain why there's no correlation?

I am planning on doing my Extended Essay on philosophy because I am just very interested in the subject but it is not a course offered at my school. This gives me an issue because the subject guide on philosophy for the EE recommends that I read the IB philosophy guide to understand the approach that IB wants me to take but I can't see this page unless I pay a lot of money or am a teacher at a school that does the philosophy program. So could someone who is either an IB philosophy student or teacher please explain to me just in a quick summary the way that IB wants me to "do philosophy". THANKS!

Hello, my name is Martina and I really need someone to help me with the EE, since my supervisor is avoiding me. The subject I chose for the EE is biology. I'd like to come up with an experiment that would allow me to talk about human physiology, but without involving people. Hi, I’m doing my EE in English Lit A1 and I’ve chosen Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons for my text. I’ve seen lots of people recommend against Dan Brown in Lit EEs but I’d like honest opinions after reading my research question: How does Dan Brown show the conflicts between the disciplines of Science and Religion to prove the possibility of their coexistence in the novel Angels & Demons? What I’m trying to get at is that the novel has been criticized for setting science and religion at odds, but actually the author implies that they’re just different ways to look at the same thing ie humans’ need to understand themselves, hence they are not opposite ‘sides’ at…

Hey guys, I am thinking of doing a Bio EE on the topic of gaming and reaction speeds. I would talk about the part of the nervous system responsible for reflexes and such.
