Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hi people. I'm writing my extended essay in music, comparing classical counterpoint with counterpoint we find in pop music. Any tips on what the examiners are looking for in an EE in music? I don't have much to compare with and my music teacher has only supervised one. Thanks

Fibonacci sequence and Phi, cuz they are intricately related. My Theory of Knowledge teacher has taken it upon himself to become the unofficial IB coordinator at my school. He says that my question is flawed. (He said at the beginning of the summer that it was okay. But I had to talk to my Advisor.) Well, I looked it over with my advisor. He didn't give me much help. SO I proceeded to research and such. Aaand... I have about three pages of virtually nothing; background information and the like. Then my advisor left me during the summer. I didn't know this. I should have probably kept better track of him. But he left. And I have a new math teacher and mentor that like... h…

Ok so i'm looking for my EE topic, and i have absolutely no ideas. I was thinking that i wanted to do something with brave new world, but i have quickly found that it is one of the most overused topics. I would still like to do something with it, but only if i could find an original topic. Besides that, i also was thinking about something by Virginia Woolf, since i very much liked Mrs. Dalloway and the stream of consciousness technique. Otherwise, I am completely open to suggestions. Anything would be helpful! Okayy so i thought about it some more and i think i want to do something about the theme of death, or fear of death. I was thinking i could use Mrs. Dalloway and H…

English A1 EE question

Do you think it is very wrong/inconsistent to compare two works that are entirely different in everything but the topic i've chosen?? I was thinking of doing Ian McEwan's Amsterdam as a single work (I had several topics there) but then I thought if the work isn't way too short/unknown for that, or the subject too narrow. So now I'm thinking of comparing the role of Molly Lane (Amsterdam) and Clarisse McClellan (Fahrenheit 451) on the plot/ the actions of the main characters. The thing is, both novels are way too different, the first being contemporary & satirical, the other futuristic, dystopic & philosophical. Do you think it is an advantage - attempting to find …

I was going through my guiding papers for EE and was wondering about a certain thing. When you write you EE in literature (whether group 1 or 2) - do you need to mention/discuss the method? Also, evaluation of discussion, implication and such - are they needed? In my papers, it says so but while I do understand why you need it in sciences and certain social sciences, I don't understand how you add evaluation and implication for a literature analysis. Also, my only method was basically close-reading of the novel. I read the novel first, then read a bunch of essays and articles by critics and then re-read my novel very closely and analysed.

Hi guys i am new to this forum and am currently finishing year 1 and starting year 2. Right now my EE research is basically about projectile motion but in the presence of air resistance. I was thinking of a research question such as "Model of projectile motion in the presence of air resistance" Maybe finding the behaviour of a projectile in air or the flight path and come up with an equation to determine the position or range if you only have certain information available. But all of this done with drag force taken into consideration. I was also thinking of something similar like "The relationship between speed of projectile and drag force". Could the second topic be l…

English EE on 1984

Hello! Newbie here! Anyways, I'm planning on doing my EE in English A1 on the novel "1984" by George Orwell and I haven't got a research question yet! *panics* I mean I know I want to focus on the theme and/or the characterisation in the book but I don't know specifically what my research question/topic should be...so anyone...help? I mean "1984" is kind of hard because it's so philosphical and political and so and so and since it's supposed to be about literary appreciation I don't really know how to do it without being too philosophical/political and I'm scared I wont do the whole appreciation thing because I'd be too distracted. So...help? If you do I will actually lo…

Does your school require you to do EE Presentations? This was actually my first all-nighter. And get this, I actually didn't even finish my presentation that night. My friend from Calgary was online so I spoke to him all night haha. Anyways, we had from 9-12 to do our presentations. I was only halfway through in the morning so I brought my laptop in and worked on my presentation in the IB Room until 10:30. Since I was so high on coffee, I figured the best thing to do is to present before I crash. So, at 10:31 I presented. I got my mark back... 94% HAHAHAHA. That's better than those suckers who did their EE over the summer. One girl worked on her presentation 2 weeks befo…

How can I write a 4000 word essay on Harry Potter?
by Guest AbbieOnFire- 7 replies

Oh, hi! So I need to have an EE topic and a super-visor by monday... and I'm still a on the fence on what to write about. I'm thinking of either ITGS [ The negative effects Video Gaming has on people and society as a whole ] or English--- something, anything to do with Harry Potter. Since I managed to write up an arguement on how Aunt Petunia could be a witch ranking up to 8200 words over the course of one weekend, I feel confident that a Harry Potter EE would be easy enough. Trouble is, I don't know what the IB would want in a HP EE. =\ Help?

Hey, is anyone doing the history extended essay? does anyone know the prefered word count for each parts of the essay? oh, forgot to mention, my teacher told me that the parts of the essay I have to include are: intro summary of evidence evaluation analysis conclusion My teacher also needs me to do an abstract for my essay. I heard that the format of the extended essay is pretty much like the History internal assessment. so, concerning the plan of investigation, is it just the abstract then?

i know this gets asked quite a lot, but i can't help it - need to hear the opinion of experienced EE writers. my topic is: Government control and acts of rebellion in dystopic novels with specific reference to Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and George Orwell's 1984. Do you think the scope is too broad? Also, I know Orwell gets done quite a lot, so... could that really lower my chances of getting a good grade? And generally, is the question posed well, in an IB manner? Thanks to anyone who bothers and helps me ease the stress

I've been writing an Extended Essay in Physics, and have been working with the local Defence Research Establishment on a 2.1 um Ho:YAG laser. We've been determining how the thermal effects in the laser affect its beam. The only problem: I didn't have any idea on what the result was going to be. How the heck am I supposed to write a thesis? (which I only found out due to this guideline). And the deadline is on Wednesday. But do I really need one? Or have I misinterperated the definition of thesis?

OK, so I'm doing a Math EE, and my teacher has never mentored before since our old math god teacher left last year. I chose game theory early on and I was really set on researching it with all my heart, but then i talked to my teacher for a while and he seemed to be discouraging me a lot because it has to be extremely math based and my topic was totally off. So now I guess i have to completely switch topics, not even game theory at all. I was hoping to do something marrying calc and stat but I can't seem to think of anything off the top of my head right now. Ill continue my hunt, but i was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions. *EDIT* Alright well i was playing ar…

Biology EE and Professional Reports

Hi all, I've been working on a lot of research for an EE in Biology and I've essentially gotten up to writing out my introduction for it. Strangely, the structure for a Bio EE that I had in mind seemed an awful lot like the structure used in the types of professional papers that you see on, say, PubMed. Is this basically the structure that the IB is asking for you to utilize in the essay?
