I am in Spanish SL year one and am just barely scraping by. My problem does not seem to be reading, listening nor writing (though spelling is always an issue), instead I am having trouble speaking. I often talk to myself in spanish and am able to come up with most anything I want to say pretty spontaneously but the second I have to talk to anyone else even if I know them very well I simply can not talk. I think I am just super afraid of messing up, I am okay talking to the teacher because I know she is fluent and I am not but when I try to talk to my classmates I don't because I am afraid they will think I am stupid. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can boost my…

Hello, My french oral is in about a week, I'm planning to talk about French singer, Édith Piaf as seen in La Vie en Rose (La Môme). However, I'm not sure how to go about with this. Suggestions on structuring and how I should prepare? My teacher is away for personal reasons and I have no where else to look!

Hi, I have my French B IOP coming up soon in March, and I have a general topic I would like to present on. The topic is "parkour". However my teacher informed me that the topic might be to broad, and that I have to make it more narrow in scope. What would be plausible examples of a specific theme for my topic? An example would be: the "origins of parkour". Also, are we allowed to have video clips if they enhance the presentation? I would ask my teacher this, but she recently got badly hurt in a car accident and has to be hospitalized for about two weeks. =( =( Thank you very much for your help! =)

Hey, I'm going to be doing my French oral in a few weeks, so I've starting thinking about my topic. What I'm confused about is whether or not it's supposed to be entirely written out and memorized beforehand. It's suggested that we do that, but the oral is also supposed to sound "natural", as if you haven't prepared it! So how would I go about doing this? Any tips? Thanks!

Hi, I'm taking French at higher level in my school, but I'm a little confused. How good do you have to be to be able to get a level 7 in French? I think I'm quite good at French, but I need a 7 to fulfil my university offer. My teachers have predicted me a 7 and I get a 7 in the practice exams, but this is the first year my school has done the IB so I'm not sure how well they're able to assess what level I would be. I'm the only one in the class so I can't compare myself to other students either. I know it's a bit of a difficult thing to answer, how good you have to be at a language, but I really need to know that I'm on the right track or if I need to work harder. Is any…

I wanted to do something within media and culture, and write a newspaper article on the shipwreck of the Titanic from the day after the incident. The reason I'm somewhat unsure about this, is that I'm wondering if I'll miss out on points because it's not based around "IB-themes", like culturalism, education, global issues etc. etc. Does the subject topic of the article matter a lot, or is it enough that I demonstrate my knowledge of writing for this type of media?

When it comes to IB, every little detail counts... What ink color are you supposed to fill in the coversheet for the WT with? Black? Blue?

You've probably seen my other threads about the orals and I am still very confused. My teacher's instructions do not help, and I've read information from here and other websites that conflicts with what my teacher suggests. Could someone describe exactly what the oral entails? What is IB looking for in our orals? I know they want to see the candidates present a topic of the culture of the language they have chosen, and be able to answer questions about such topic, but how does one go about presenting this topic? An simple outline would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having trouble deciding my oral for Spanish B oral in March. I've noticed I am one of the few that are handling historic events of a Spanish-speak country, Spain specifically, while other students are focusing on current events, such as the global warming effect in equator-level countries. As I am one of the few that seem to have difficulty organizing and constructing my analysis, should I change my topic to be more recent to avoid using any time in the oral to describe what happened in history?

I'm about to chose my IB subjects for next year. My school would put on an xtra HL French B class for me They say I am too good in French (father is French, im almost fluent but not so strong in grammar and vocab) to join the others in SL. How hard is the HL? Can the teacher be pretty flexible what to do with me? Do I have to read classical literature only or can it be also modern stuff? How did you experience your French B HL class?

I have my first Spanish oral in two weeks, which my teacher says is amble time to prepare. We have our topics (food of Latin America) and we each get to present for 4 minutes. What is the best way to be able to know the information without memorizing it in Spanish? I cannot think of any other way that feels comfortable enough other than memorization and strict memorization will result in automatic failure. Edit: Sorry, confused topics.

for my iop i am doing about The Great Gatsby and how loss of morality was a consequence of the American Dream. for example, how money was being made in any way possible and the extravagence that occurs as a result. i am trying to specifically explore this from Gatsby's personality and how he represents this issue, for ex. he spends alot of money to impress daisy, but any additional background issue would be appreciated. However, I also need help coming up with a good thesis statement and some guidance on specific examples that deal with this. Thanks

I am on my second year of IB Spanish Ab initio and I have been finding it very difficult. I have got a predicted 3/4 which i was hoping to improve to a 4. I have my finals in a couple of days and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best ways to study for Paper 1s and Paper 2s. If anyone has any helpful website, that would be appreciative as well. Especially regarding the vocab and conjugations because I am lacking skills in those.

Hi there. So I'm taking Mandarin at SL for my Language B course, and I was wondering if anyone could provide for me past experiences on the oral assessment that comes along during IBY2? All I know is that 1) we will be given the prompt one day before the examination date to research and prepare a five minute speech, and 2) we will have four opportunities throughout the whole year to be scored on before sending the final version to the IBO for moderation. My question is, do any of you guys have tips/ advice on scoring well on this assessment? Thanks a lot.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am seriously struggling with Spanish ab initio. All my other subjects I'm either a 6 or 7, but with Spanish I am struggling to maintain a 4. Has anyone got some advice on how to improve. Part of the reason is we have a really crap teacher, and though my class has tried, we are still going to have here next year. If anyone has any tips on improving my grade it would be greatly appreciated. What Im doing now is obviously not working.

So, at the moment, I'm a Junior in IB. My freshman year, our school finally got a new language. Now our students could break away from the drab, dull, cookie cutter languages like Spanish and French and take Chinese. Since I pretty much despise both of the former languages, I finally convinced my parents to let me take Chinese, but since I'm totally getting off topic here, lets get down to the point. My question is, can/how can I Standard Level in Chinese? I DID go to china for over a month for an intensive language trip with a school from another town and was granted the option of skipping a year and going into Chinese 4 as an Independent Studies student (seeing as, obv…

So I was just wondering whether I should do Chinese B SL or Chinese A2 SL, I can probably even handle A1 without much difficulty but I just don't want put in the time for it. And what are the internal assessments requirment for each of these? Thanks

My french IOP is in a few days, I'm not really sure where to start? I know that the bit I need to prepare should be between 3 and 4 minutes long, I also know that my topic should be linked to the francophone culture/lifestyle/history. What type of topics did you pick? Just to have an idea.. Any guidelines or tips would be MUCH appreciated!

Well I'm looking to expand my french vocabulary and everyone says that reading is the best way to do this. I was wondering if anyone had an ideas for books, magazines, websites, comic books and any other things that I could read to help diversify my vocabulary. I am reading Le Petit Prince at the moment, but don't restrict your ideas to that sort of medium, any ideas are appreciated.

i have never studied any french before , and for next semester i have to take french regular, and chinese b as my second language . so i was wondering since i have to take french regular anyways, why not just make it french ib? i don't know if it's really hard for a beginner, even though the course is suppose to start from the begining but i'm sure it'll still move at a fast pace. and i would get a way higher mark in chinese, but the downside is i wouldn't learn anything from it since i already speak perfect chinese. so did anybody took french ab initio with no background at all? i really need your advice! thank you! and also my friend said that it starts easy, but as i…

Hey everyone. =P So, as my group two subject, I'm currently taking SL Spanish B, since my school offers only SL Spanish B and SL French B. At the end of last year, when I was deciding my classes, a couple of friends and I tried to convince our IB coordinator to allow us to take either HL Spanish A2 or HL Spanish B, but he said no, since our school "has always had a good pass rate offering only SL foreign language B." Then, earlier this year I tried asking him if I could self-study HL Italian A2, since I'm fairly competent in Italian (on my own; no formal learning), and he said no again, because he had never heard of self-studying a group two language. I'm considering aski…

So, my class do Italian ab initio, and I know we're meant to do oral internal assessments counting for 30% of the final grade. Our problem: last year, our teacher kept putting them off saying "No, no! You're not ready!" Now, we have a new teacher and we're panicking even more than last year because we haven't done the orals. So, I'm asking if the orals have to be done in the first year or the second year, or whenever. Thank you! (PS- sorry if there's already a post for this. If there is, delete this)

I was wondering how difficult IB chinese is and if its manageable to do it self-taught if one has some knowledge in chinese? I have the 4th level of the new HSK test and used to be able to read about 1000 characters, but because in IB i dont have enough time to study much for chinese i have probably forgotten quiet alot. So i was wondering how difficult Chinese Abinitio and B are. If anybody knows, please reply it would be very helpful.

I am an instructor of IB foreign language Korean. As you know in ib language B, paper 2 has different requirements according to the languages, say, Japanese language requires more than 300 characters or so and Spanish requires more than 700 letters to write in their essays. In the IB exams for the Korean test paper 2, it states 'write more than 800 letters in Korean’. However, I am not sure if this means that they are requiring to write more than 800 LETTERS OR 800 WORDS. Could someone please let me know if this means to write more than 800 letters or 800 words in Korean for the paper 2 essay? Thank you!

Hi everyone So basically tomorrow morning I have a very important test, I have to write a comparative commentary in 2.5 hours The problem of the matter is, I am not very good at writing comparative commentaries, and this test is one of the two things my teacher is going to look at when entering me into the exams. (HL/SL) (The other one being a written task, but this one is more important) Almost everyone in my class is going for higher level, as it creates more opportunities in the future. If I fail tomorrows test, I will probably have to wait a year before participating in the exams (as English is the only IB subject offered at my school, and because I failed the year, m…
