Hello, Has anyone done Further maths hl before and actually got a decent score? If you are to do it, is it only offered on pamoja online? Do you have to do it with maths hl as well? If u can pass further maths with for instance a 4, would it be considered better than a 6/7 in hl maths?

So I've been trying to find a topic for my IA but my teacher keeps recommending me to find something new because he says my problems are too unoriginal and seem taken out of textbooks or stuff like that. The thing is seeing the examples and the marks they got it doesn't seem like you have to be completely original to get good marks, so I'm a bit confused. Originally I wanted to do something with a torus, examining the universe being a torus shape and stuff, but I did realize that perhaps that was too overdone so I tried to find other ideas. For example, say I found the distances between several points on the earth using spherical geometry, and then after I have …

Hi! I'm starting the IB program next year and going to take 4 HL's (Bio, Chem, English, Economics), but I'm not sure if I should change Economics for Math HL... I've always been in the advanced math class, though I never liked math, and was forced by my parents to be at this level. Lately I've realized my math is pretty bad, and I'm pretty slow to understand things, compared to all of my math classmates. It's not that I don't know how every equation works or how graphs work and all, in fact I'm pretty good at solving equations and doing these formulas. It's just that i don't understand math in general. We just got "deeper" into solving trig formulas, equati…

Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this question. So far what i have done is to say 1/x+ d = 1/y So (1+xd)/x = 1/y and that (1+2xd)/x = 1/z z=x/(1+2xd) So it means that I can use the pythagoras theorem to solve it, but i don't know which one is longest? and also there are too many variables involved?

So, for example, find the median of the probability density function f(x) = 2e^(-x^2) for 0<x<2 (it should be bigger than and equal and smaller than and equal.) (I don't know how to type it) I really don't know how to use the calculator to do this. I am using Ti-84.

I have to make a final decision about my math course. I wrote SL on my registration form, but I'm considering switching to HL. My school only offers it online through Pamoja, and I'm wondering what an online course is like. Is it done at the same time each day like a regular class? Is it a live video with a teacher or does the site have written information/pre-recorded videos? How do tests/assignments/exams work? Some other Math HL questions: I've done a lot of reading online, and students say that HL math is very difficult. I want to take it, but I also don't want to get a very low grade. Is there anything I can do over the summer to prepare for the course? …

Are mathematics HL and further mathematics two different courses or is further mathematics just an extension of the HL? That is, if I take both at the final exam, do they count as one or as two of the required 6 subjects? Thank you

I am currently in my first year of IB Math HL in America. I have an A in the class, and received an A on the final exam we take at the end of each semester. I love math, but I am aware that the IB Math HL test is difficult. In order to go to a college/university for what I want to study, they are usually looking for a 6 IB Math HL, or 5 IB Math SL. (Sounds weird I know) I want to know whether I should take the SL test at the end of the two years of HL, or if I should try to get a 6 on the HL test? Any advice is helpful!!

So my Math IA got selected by the IB for moderation and I was just talking to my math teacher about it today. Right now it's 14 pages exact and I can't reduce it any further, and my teacher said that's fine as long as it's less than 14. I do however have 3 pages of appendices of the Matlab code that I used in my IA; the graphs and important stuff are in the body, but I thought to include the code in the appendix to show that I've modified it. However, my teacher said that appendices aren't allowed in a maths IA and I also read on Reddit someone saying that's the case. It doesn't say in the guide that appendices aren't allowed. In fact, is says the important stuff shouldn'…

Hello, I have recently done my maths IA on modeling rainfall. After I had finished it, I was looking at other examples of maths IA and I noticed that one of the samples offered by the IB did the same topic as me and also used the same methods for modeling it . The data and explanations in my IA are different, however, they are quite similar IA's. Is that a problem? or as it'a my own work i shouldn't worry? Thank you

I am really struggling to come up with an idea that will allow me to write 12 pages on and would appreciate if somebody could give me some ideas and explain the main AIM that we have to reach at the end of the exploration. Thanks

Im currently in pre ib grade 10 and planning to go into Math HL next year and there's a math competition that I'm doing tomorrow. I was looking at past contests and doing them for practice, but i find them kinda hard which makes me rethink my decision to do math HL. So for the people that are in Math HL, please take a look at the questions and tell me whether you find them easy or not. http://www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/past_contests/2015/2015CayleyContest.pdf Ones at the beginning are easy but take a look at the last few. Will I be able to get better at the kind of questions in math HL? I'm in the IB prep math class and I'm not struggling at all and i have a 95 av…

Hi Everybody, I wanted to ask whether one is allowed to bring TWO calculators to the IB Exams (only those permitting calculator use goes without saying), the reason being that for the first part of the course I was using a Texas Instrument handheld device and changed to a HP device for the second part, meaning there are operations I am MUCH more comfortable with using one and others I would much rather use the other for. Obviously, I would never be using both at the same time () so it would be like having one, only one that I am entirely familiar with. Thank you! Rebs

Hey, I am in my second year for IB DP and most things were quite alright, not good but alright, except for maths. When I first joined the DP program, the IB coordinator was keen to let me study English HL but my dad didn't like that. He suggested I try for the Maths HL entrance exam and try out for Maths instead. Amazingly, I never used such a high tech calculator before and my strong point was in algebra, that's all. I kind of blanked a few craps during that entrance exam. I was doubtful if I could ever study maths well. I joined a maths program called "Kumon" (google it ^^) for 10 years and spent 4-5 years just working on the same level for maths. Simply to say, I liter…

Haven't started my IA because I just can't find a topic to explore! Is it necessary that the exploration is based on some application/real world/nature? Or can it be something abstract? Hi, I am trying to come up with a topic for HL math. I wanted to do something on calculating the area of revolution of irregular shapes. At first I was thinking to get the area of revolution of different water bottles I have at home (since I am a coffee person, I have a lot of starbucks thermos). I thought it was a good start, but I need an extension (the actual exploration) and I need help in coming up with this. I wanted to do the surface area of the thermos through the revolution, but that would end up being too similar to the IA from a student in the previous year and I know my teacher would make me come up with another idea or do it again. Hi guys, I was thinking of researching the perfect shot in the game of cricket. I am thinking of using momentum and angles to do the exploration. Differentiation and integration can help me model the required data. However, is the topic HL-level and if so, there will be a lot of physics involved. Can I use a topic that is physics-oriented. Also, as a backup, I want to explore the math-Econ relationship, but I found ideas that were either too simplistic or too complex. Suggestions about either topic are really appreciated.
