May I know if my research question can be accepted? I want to use calculus to mod out an object suited for 3D printing (in my case, a christmas tree). I am planning to use Geogebra and Blender to make the model, and then list out the equations and integrations... So yeah if that comes out as planned will it be accepted as a HL IA? Please leave some comments or advices >< thanks! ^^

Hello everybody In my math IA I am using methods and theories outside of the the syllabus. For example, I am using polynomial curve fitting by least squares method (statistics) and also the arc length formula of curves (calculus) in particular sections of my IA. I have researched these two topics extensively and I know how to use them; but, I am wondering how one should present new methods/theories in the IA? Should I, for example, give a proof for the arc length formula and perhaps even a generalized deduction of the curve fitting method in my IA? These proofs might be quite long and would most likely make my IA go above 12 pages.

Hey guys, I was curious if there are online versions of textbooks for 2016 IB further maths exams. Anyone knows anything? Also I just noticed the Further maths IA section, does anyone know if we have to write one if we want to take it as a course? My college sort of offers the course but it is kind of very unofficial, so we meet up once a week and discuss some topics and prolems and most of the work is up to us and I would really appreciate any info regarding the topic. Thanks in advance

Hello- I want to calculate the volume of an egg for my math IA, but I'm a little stuck on the calculations. I want to hypothetically cut the egg in half so there are two symmetrical halves, and start by calculating the area of the 2-D shape created. I do not want to calculate the area of two different ellipses, as it would be considered too simple, but how would I start calculating the area with calculus?? Thank you so much!

Hey guys I am a Maths HL student, and recently i came up with an idea to do my Maths IA on, comparing two ways of solving Trig equations. One of the ways of solving Trig equations, is by using the trig identities and the other way is by using the De Moivre's theorem. I was wondering if I could explain these 2 ways and different ways and i could somehow come to a conclusion on which way is better (i.e. by counting number of step required to arrive at the general solution) for what type of trig equation I understand both methods quite well since I watched the Khan Academy Videos on them!! But I was wondering if this sort of idea was fine for a Maths HL IA. Any help woul…

Hello, I am currently preparing my maths IA and I am doing maths HL. I have thought about a topic to do, but recently I heard that for maths HL students we have to write an IA on out of syllabus topic, a much more advanced maths. Is this true? People who have achieved high marks in Maths HL IA can you please tell me the truth? Thank you!

I'm finally starting to come down to what I think my topic for my maths IA will be, but I need a little bit more. I'm looking at moments of inertia, potentially to calculate the moment of inertia felt by the propellers on a quadcopter I'm building. I'm not sure if the mathematics are "higher level" since I still have to learn quite a bit about moments of inertia, so I don't exactly know what mathematics (other than integral calculus) I would be using. So, is this topic a good start? How should I start developing it to get a focused research question for my IA? Thanks for any help!

#2 (2 pts) A window in Prof. Xu' ss office is shown in figure (A) below, y = f ( s ) where f is given by f (s) = 5 sin ((π/32)(s^2 + 16)). Every evening, before she leaves her office, Prof. Xu draws the curtain (see figure (B)) over the window. Every morning she draws the curtain open, starting at time t = 0. If she draws the curtain at the rate of 0.8 ft / sec, find the rate at which the area of the exposed part of the window' s glass is changing when t = 4. not sure where to start, dont need answer needing guiding help thx

Hey Everyone, New to this site, so bear with me! I'm doing my Math HL IA on the Ramsey Theorem (a part of the set theory) and applying it, to prove the Party Problem. What I'm unsure about is the fact that our IA needs to be 'concise and coherent', but the theorem itself is such that it requires description to prove it. Will that maybe reduce my chances of scoring well? Thanks in Advance. xx

IA (HL) (Another) HL Math IA Thread - I need clarification on the very basis of the math IA

Preface: I realize this wall of text is unatractive, so if anyone wants to answer without reading my gratuitous commentary, I've bolded and separated the main questions I'm hoping to have answered, and italicized what I felt was semi-important and clarifying. I realize that these threads might be very common, however I've been having trouble finding what I need. I've looked over several materials for the mathematics internal assessment, official and unofficial, including the guide on this forum, but cannot figure it out for myself. My first question is: What is the goal of the Internal Assessment in Mathematics? At its most basic level, what is the goal? What am I t…

Hi everyone! I have currently started IBDP and am doing Maths HL. Our school is using 'Mathematics for the international student Mathematics HL(core)' by David Martin. However, I think for me the questions here are far too easy and if I look at the past paper the questions are in a higher level. Therefore, I want to know if anyone knows any textbook which has more hard questions than teaching sections, or perhaps which 'only ' has questions. If please anyone know a textbook full of challenging questions, please tell me Thank you very much!

Hi guys! So I have 2 ideas for my Math IA: 1. Tumor growth rate. Hence, it will require mathematical modelling, in particular, topics like calculus and logarithms. I have already researched on a couple of models that are being used. However, my problem comes with this: How do I move ahead? I need an objective to work with for my exploration. With the models that help to calculate the rate of tumor growth in vivo, what can I actually "explore" in order to move ahead with my project? 2. Examining 2 epidemiological (mathematical) models (Reed Frost and SIR) on two real life epidemics (The 2015 Indian Swine flu and the 2015 Ebola Outbreak). I want to know if this is a…

From the exam conduct for 2015 pdf it seems that there is a revised formula booklet for most of the subjects. We are given the revised booklet for prelims and the IB exam this Nov 2015 session. What is the difference between the Published June 2012 booklet and the Edited February 2015 version? Is there any formula removed etc? Thanks.

Heyy guys, so I've just gotten all my teachers to sign my IB choices. I feel really great about it except i am a bit stressed for HL Maths. Right now im in the IGCSE Additional Mathematics course and im getting 6s in general. I've heard the HL Maths course is absolutely insane but I was just wondering how, compared to igcse additional maths, it is? If im getting 6s in this, should I be able to keep these grades? Im not at all expecting to get 7s in HL Maths but I need at least a 6. How much should I study? Again, with my background, how should it go? Thank you so much for any answers!

I'm a Math HL student and I'm not really that strong in this class so I'm finding this exploration quite difficult and I'm struggling really hard. Each time I choose a topic for my math exploration, I'm either told or I find out that it's too simple for the level of a Math HL student. My current topic is the SIR model but I can't find data values for the parameters and I don't know how to make it more 'HL'. I've decided to change my topic and discuss 'The square root of 2'. Would this be too simple?? If it is, what other mathematical concepts can I discuss to make it the level of HL. I've also been thing of something in calculus but I'm not sure what to focus on? PL…

I'm planning on buying either the HL OSC revision guide (the one by the IB), or the Cambridge study guide. I mainly wanna use them to refer to while practicing some questions for the first time. Do they cover everything in the syllabus, or is it way too condensed and useless? And which one should I get? https://osc-ib.com/ib-revision-guides/math/mathematics-hl/133 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1107672155?me=&redirect=true&ref_=olp_product_details

Hi guys! I didn't want to focus my IA on a really common topic, so related to my ITGS EE I came up with the idea of elliptic curve cryptography. Although I can develop this topic a lot in an exploratory basis, I don't know how to set the main aim of the IA (which could be, for example, a demonstration of some theorem or the elaboration of a system, both based on ECC). Any ideas? Thank you a lot!

I'm in Math SL, and for my IA, I'm calculating the rate of blood flow using Poiseuille's equation. The thing is, I'm not in Physics, I'm in Bio, so I need a detailed explanation for the equation - basically a lesson. Please help me, this is due next week, and I've been looking at multiple other topics but all of them were HL, yet this one was acceptable. Please, I'm literally begging, tutor me! I've found some sites that derive the equation, but I find it hard to understand, because the article can't answer my questions.

Hello everyone! I am having problems with choosing the topic for my Math HL exploration. I am interested in architecture. Hello, I am doing math HL and i am not really finding it hard. I scored well on the last couple tests (86%,91%,100%,93%), in sequences, complex numbers, differentiation and logs (in this order). As a result, I am thinking about doing further maths. However, the further math examination only occurs in may/june, so I will only have about 6months to learn the entire syllabus. Further on, my school does not teach further math so I will have to teach myself. I have done well at mathematics in the past, and scored well in my math igcse(a*,a*) and i also got a silver medal in a a national math competition/olympiad. So, what do you guys think about doing this? Thank you very mu…

Guys, kind of in a situation at the moment. The Nov 2015 (my session) exams are only 6 weeks from now and we're still kind of trying to finish our Calculus Option coverage. We're almost done, up to Maclaurin and Taylor series topic so only two more to go. But I still feel it doesn't leave us a whole lot of time to revise and familiarize ourselves with the questions and stuff. So does anyone with experience have any advice for me? I would really appreciate it. Also what would be the best approach at studying for P3 right now? Many thanks!

Like do I need to say exactly what I typed into the boxes, or do I just need to generally outline it? Please answer quickly, I have a draft due in a few days! Thank you!!

I have no idea where to start this IB HL maths problem. It's from the probability section of the curriculum. If anyone can help me tonight before I leave for school tomorrow that would be amazing! P(A or B)' = Ø, P(A/B') = 1/3, P(A) = 6/7, find P(B). All I need is some guidance to start the problem because I've done many other problems like this where you use the information booklet but the Ø is throwing me off. Thanks

Greetings IB Maths Community! So considering the removal of the Matrices Topic from the Maths HL from 2014 onwards, does this mean that one cannot use matrix methods for other question types in the exams anymore? (Would a matrix method be included in the markscheme and/or the examiner mark the matrix method?) This is primarily concerned with using the matrix method for: - Vector Cross Product [to shave off working times] - Solutions of Linear Equations (Three Equations with Three Unknowns) [---> Honestly, the row reduction method is such a pain (unless, mayhaps someone can create a reliable 'row reduction solution method'?)] Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone.. I will be a highschool junior in about 4 days and there is one class that I am really confused about and scared of: HL math. I was wondering if you guys could give me advice on whether taking HL math is something i should pursue. Heres a little about me. I think that I am a good student (had a 4.0 in freshman year and 3.87 in my sophomore year.) In grade 9 I was placed in advanced geometry and scored a 94. In grade 10 I was placed in accelerated advanced algebra two (notorious for being difficult in our school) and scored an average of 86. On top of IB HL math, Im also taking HL Physics, Chemistry, and Business. Chemistry adheres to my mind…

Hey, I'm a senior in HL and need help with my IA. Right now we are developing our ideas, and I am thinking about musical tones and timbre. I found a great powerpoint that explains the math behind this (http://faculty.tru.ca/rtaylor/music_seminar.pdf) that involves second derivatives and trigonometry, but I have trouble figuring out the notation behind all of this (pg. 22 and beyond is what I'm talking about). For example, I don't know what u(x,t) means. If anyone can help me clarify things, that would be great.

After thinking for hours on what topic I should choose for my IA, I finally came across "finding the surface area and volume of a torus." This topic is actually very interesting to me, as it involves combining different methods of integration. After doing the work, however, I felt that it may have been a little too easy and it may be an SL level topic. I have thought of also adding in a section where I try to maximize volume based on surface area constraints and vice versa, but I don't know if it is too far off the original purpose. Can anybody help me decide whether it is possible to so this solely on SA and volume, or would it be better to add the optimization, or yet c…

Ok so after continuous research and pondering for over the past month, I think i have a topic! But I also want to know if this topic makes sense and weather it would qualify for a "hard enough" topic. I want to experiment and see if there is a fixed ratio that compares the centripetal force of a curved road (to all those who have taken physics might know this), to the length of the curve of the road. I want to do this and see if i can figure out a "Golden ratio" of a sort for that. So any comments? think it will work? I have to had this topic in in 2 weeks (not the full ia)....soooo ya... Also any other IA topics ideas would be great...im kinda still looking but have sea…
