vasumalhotra
I'm entering my junior year next year. I really want to take Math SL as I feel I would have much better success but my coordinator told me that he cannot let me take SL because I'm already in Calculus. Is that true? Can he force me to take HL even if me and my parents don't want me to? Reply
Emmi
You can't be forced into a class (except in rare cases, which don't apply to you). Get your parents behind it, and your principal if you need to. 1 Reply
Thrashmaster
My school just told us that they're forcing us into certain math classes, and in my case, math HL. They say it is the school district's policy. If you make a big enough deal out of it, you can probably get away with it. But can they force you? Well, probably. flinquinnster
Well, if your IBC refuses to enrol you into a class/exam for a particular subject, they can 'force' you to take a certain subject in order for you to participate in the IB. However, I think that with sufficient support from parents/other teachers you would probably be able to argue against that. But I admit that I don't know very much about the US education system, some districts work in weird ways. Reply
Outofmydesire
Well, your counselor has the right to guide you in the best way but in the end is it your decision. Reply
familyjewels
well... my school forced me to take History SL (apparently it's because of the government education system in my country... or whatever that's called made every school teach us at least one history course)... Also, they forced me to take Spanish HL Literature... and I wanted that course in SL. Edited June 13, 2014 by familyjewels Reply
IEAFBC812
In my School we're forced to do a certain subject-combination, because the IB Diploma has to be translatable into the German Abitur...These restrictions are made up by the education ministry of Lower Saxony. John Hoose
That shouldn't be allowed... Co-ordinators need to ensure you have the requisite number of high subjects and languages, (if you are doing the diploma not the certificates) , so they shouldn't really be allowed to force you to take Math HL. If you are taking it though, good luck because it is by far the most challenging subject I have. (Practice Practice Practice) Reply
