My Math HL IA(Exploration) is based on time dilation and it explores how it affects human ageing. I am using physics formulae though, so can it actually count as a math exploration? (I don't know, Even though I feel that physics formula are simply mathematical formulae used in real life). In the actual exploration, i will be using lots of algebra, plotting graphs, and using reasoning(based on physics, though). Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

Hey guys, I'll be taking my HL Math exams this upcoming week, and i'm pretty sure I won't be getting my IB diploma because of it. I can breeze through all my other exams. By the way, I have four HLs, which means they're are different requirements if I get a 2 or 3 in an HL. I've been doing some practice with past papers, but if you have any tips/suggestions on how to pass please comment below. Thanks!

Hey guys , I am in a wee-bit of a spot here . I need your help for my Math IA topic . So far I have thought of two topics : Time Dilation ( with Lorentz Transformation ) wherein I thought I would model the relative rate of decay of satellite components from a static/stationary point . The second topic being : investigating why Riemann's zeta function does not produce argument at 1 . Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestion . PS: I am a Math HL student .

I will be in the first graduating class in the IB program at my school. My school just barely got inducted and accepted to the program, so my teachers and I have been learning everything IB along side each other in the past year. My teachers and I are very knowledgeable about the program itself, but like I said this will be our first year so none of my teachers have really experienced it. I aim to study engineering so I naturally want to take math HL. I enjoy maths more than any other class, and I love learning about it. The only problem is since this will be my schools first year it may be challenging. The director of my school doesn't recommend me doing Math HL, but she…

As I said in the title, too few people chose HL to create a class (3 people). The counselor aired the idea of online classes, but I was hoping for physical classes. I got a near full score in a local aptitude test, so I think I could handle it. I guess I'm posting this because I don't know where to go from here. If someone has a similar experience, I'd love to hear it. Sorry if this is in the wrong category.

Hii guys, So I'm just about to exceed the 12 page mark for my Math IA and I still have some more things that I would like to add. I was just wondering, is it possible for us to go above the 12 page mark without being penalized? I didn't see any restriction with the page numbers but they suggested 6-12 pages, so please let me know.

Hi, I came up with an idea for my Mathematics IA, and the idea is about investigating how the temperature of a cup of tea changes over time. I would take the temperature of the room and the initial temperature of the cup of tea, and the temperature again of the cup of tea at a certain time interval. With this data I will predict the temperature at another time interval. Now there is Newton's law of cooling which has a differential equation that I must solve and eventually you can form an exponential decay function, but i was wondering if this topic would be too easy for a Math HL IA. In addition, thus this topic involve too much physics? I will try to stay away from del…

My math teacher requested the class to give him our topics for the IA before the summer break and I said that I would do a mathematical investigation of Apollo 11's flight path and other things using calculus. I chose the topic hastily as everyone else seemed to have a topic but I was so lost. I thought about using the golden ratio in beauty and cosmetics (but that's so overused). Plus, my math teacher really wanted me to go for something great and interesting as my grades were good and he didn't want the IA to bring it down. He's asked the class for a first draft by the beginning of twelfth grade (2 weeks), and said that If we don't deliver, he won't help us with the…

Hello! I am currently studying Topic 6: Calculus from the core of Math HL and I ran into a bit of ambiguity in the syllabus which I don't fully understand. The Syllabus states that under topic 6.1. we are required to know "informal ideas of limit, continuity and convergence" and under the further guidance section it states that we should "include the result lim(x approaches infinity) sinx /x =1." My questions are what exactly should I know and be able to answer about limits? And have there been any questions in past HL examinations in which they ask explicitly to evaluate a certain limit other than the usual asymptotes of rational functions when you are graphing/ske…

Hey everyone! I need to submit my math exploration topic in a few weeks, but I haven't gotten one yet. I was planning on doing something related to geometric patterns of complex numbers, but I'm not sure whether that has enough scope (and I don't even know how to start). Any suggestions for topic with a lot of HL worthy math?

Hello, I recently wanted to start writing my math ia and ee, so for my ia i had chosen the euler's number as a topic. I realised that it is impossible to write an ia on euler's number since there is nothing to prove ( i had no research question, no nothing, i just had found the topic on ibmathresources). So i changed my mind and decided to do an ia with a mathematical induction, so what i am asking is ideas from you for mathematical induction topics. thanks

So, my teacher gave me this past paper with a problem that i'm having difficulties to solve. So, it goes like this: Consider the curve with equation (x^2+y^2)^2 = 4xy^2 (a) Use implicit differentiation to find an expression for dy/dx. (b) Find the equation of the normal to the curve at the point (1, 1). Really need some help, ASAP. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'm halfway through my summer, and when I get back to school, I'll be starting the Maths HL course. I am wondering what topics I need to brush up on before I start the course, to ensure my readiness. Also, my maths teacher told me that it would be a good idea to "practice my algebra". What sorts of exercises/questions do you think I can do to help achieve that? Also, my teacher told me I have to be fluent with my maths working, as in I can't make any silly mistakes while solving problems. How do you think I can become fluent in my working? Practicing until I stop making silly mistakes? Thanks!

I am doing a maths HL IA on proving the Merssene primes and in the end i planned to write about their applications. The problem came when I came across their use in perfect numbers. If anyone is not aware, they are the numbers who are the sum of their proper factors and every even perfect number has only one Merssene prime among its factors. The ultimate problem is that there is no real world application of the perfect numbers so how do I emphasize the importance of the perfect numbers as the only reason that mathematicians still work on them is because they are cool? How is something like that generally approached in the IB?

So I'm calculating the length of a road going around the hill and I'm dealing with both elevation and length of the road. Separately it's very simple to calculate, all I do is plot the points, get a progression mean line and use integration to find the distance. The problem comes into play when I have to use both these graphs. I have a vague idea that I have to somehow relate these two graphs onto one single graph but I am clueless I'm not asking anyone to directly answer the question, but just guide me in a way for possible solutions

Hello, I am currently in 10th grade and in the past week we had to get recommendations from our teachers for the IB program next year. I wanted to take HL mathematics as I am currently in Standard High Level. The Highest class at my school is Extended Mathematics. After none of the other students in my class (including me) got an HL recommendation, I was wondering if I should take it HL next year because I heard it was much tougher than SL. This was my first year in the IB and they learned some subjects that I have not learned in my previous country, which got me a 2/8 on my first test. But after I went home and studied and got 8/8 on the following test. Ok so anyways, …

I am an international student just got admission in IB year 1. Getting confused with the subjects to choose. With the little knowledge that I have about IVY colleges, I understand that for engineering, that I too am keen to get into, they prefer students with Physics, Chem and Maths as HL. However in grade 9 and 10, I did not score too well in CBSE, primarily due to the fact that CBSE is more of a rote learning and I somehow I didn't like the pedagogy. Concepts, though were very clear and interesting. Please advise if following subject choice would be ok for me and not suicidal. I am ready to go all out and work very hard in these below mentioned subjects: 1. English SL 2…

So for my extended essay I might want to do something about cubic, which is something that i am capable of doing. I have been thinking a lot of topics for my EE and I will mention numerical stability of cubic function as a small part of my EE. However, I don't really know much about the numerical stability. Do you guys know anything about it? What is the simplest way to calculate it?

Ok just to give you a little bit of background, I'm from Germany but have been going to an International school all my life but this year (10th grade or year 11) I did an exchange year to the UK where I switched from studying the iGCSE's to the GCSE's. I have always been good at maths and it's also been one of my favourite subjects for a while. I was predicted an A* this year and I've also been getting them throughout this year. However during my exams, something happened, Paper 1 was easy but for some reason I messed up Paper 2 not as though I did horribly bad but still I think I won't get my A* because of it, and instead I'll "only" be able to achieve an A. I'm starting…

Hello, fellas. I am a student who is in 12th grade now, and my exam is on November this year. I personally want to apply Mathematics & Statistics major for university. However, as I am applying for UK universities, the subject combination turns out to be a big matter right. I am always worrying will there be any disadvantage from my subject combinations My HLs are Math, Korean Lit, English B SLs are Econs, Physics, Chem The reason that I chose such kinda combo is because I have started studying in Singapore since last year, and I had never studied abroad before. Fortunately, I am doing well on all of my HLs, but I am still worrying if I would get any kind of disadva…

This question is very open ended and vague i know lol, but sometimes i spend a good 30+ minutes wondering how to actually do a question. For e.g. they give you 4 variables to solve and you only have equations to solve 3. But then many minutes later you realise how to kind of extract another equation. But it takes ages to realise you can do that. Any general advice?

I often hear that the gap between SL and HL is very big for maths especially, more than any other subject. Currently, I'm doing HL and getting high 6s but it's going to get a lot harder next year. My problem is that i'm not naturally intelligent when it comes to maths; I don't have this maths 'intuition' that some people seem to have e.g. sometimes i can't comprehend questions when it comes to an actual test. Does HL get a lot harder in the second year than in the first? And is it arguably the hardest HL that takes more time than other subjects? Apparently only 2 people got 7 in maths hl last year, is that normal? Thanks

Hey everyone, Okay so we've been asked to get started on our Math IAs and I was quite interested at first to explore the minimum speed required to run on water but there were some complications so now I have decided to do mine on the Schrödinger equation. Could anyone please help me out in deciding which direction to go with this topic? I just finished 1st year of HL Maths in 9th grade with a grade of 4. (I didn't have the prereqs, but HL maths was the most appropriate level class my school offered to 9th graders). The only realistic option for 10th grade is to finish HL Maths, perhaps getting a 5 this time. The question is what should I take for the IB Diploma (11th and 12th grade)? I could continue keeping my head above water in Further Maths or repeat HL Maths (and probably get a 7 the second time around). Other than this year's 4 in HL Maths grade, I'm probably on track to be a good candidate for a top 20 U.S. university. What Diploma Program course grade would universities look at more favor…

So, I have been taking Mathematics Higher level for the past ~6 months. I always do the homework given, the exam-style questions worksheets, pay attention in class and try to solve all my doubts. However, doesn't matter how much I study and do exercises, every time I get a new worksheet or question, I always have doubts or do something wrong. This has been a problem in my past tests. I do all the questions and solve my doubts, but when I get to do an exam, I sometimes have no idea how to do some questions, get something wrong on them or do some small mistakes that end up making the whole question wrong. This is for like, 70% of the questions on the test. I'm struggling an…

I'm a freshman currently and I'm taking Precalculus Honors. I have an A in the class, so I'm doing pretty ok in the class. I'm planning to take AP Calculus BC next year (sophomore year) and take HL 2 my junior year, then take Further Mathematics my senior year. If any of you guys are taking Further Maths this year or have taken it in the past, what would your advice be? The only thing is, I've honestly never really considered myself to be a mathematical person, and I'm interested in pursuing a career in law in the future. Any comments are welcome! Thanks in advance

On the HL exam, would it be acceptable to use correct methods for certain things which are not described on the syllabus? I'm specifically referring to using matrices to solve certain problems (e.g. determinants for systems of linear equations and cross products of vectors). Using the determinant is really the only way our teacher taught us to do various things but the method is never in the markschemes so I'm afraid I will lose points. Is it acceptable if it's still a correct method that gets the right answer?

Hey, folks! May is just a week away and for us sitting this session, exams are on the 12th and 13th (whoever is TZ2).
