Someone told me that you can apply to either Oxford or Cambridge, never to both, at undergrad level. Is there a reason for this? Moreover, will they find out if you apply to both now that your other UCAS universities are not revealed to universities you've applied to? Also, how do you decide which college to apply to? Which are the best for law? They all seem super! Thanks! Erudite.

Hey! I do 4 HLs and 2 SLs for my diploma and am doing 2 extra HL subjects after school as certificates. Keeping in mind that they don't count in my diploma score, and the fact that my 2 extras are Theatre and Dance HL, do you think it would make a lick of a difference to a top UK university (for a law application) that I'm doing them? Thanks everyone!

Okay, I was just wondering whether universities that state a required total point score at higher are flexible with this? For example, one uni I'm interested in applying to says they want a certain amount at higher and a general overall score requirement: I have exceeded the overall point requirement by one, but am one below the higher point requirement (but my teacher is considering boosting my prediction as I was 0.8% below the next grade! :/) As I have achieved one of their requirements, will I (potentially) be offered a place to study there or flat-out rejected for not having achieved both requirements? Sorry if there are existing threads dealing with this issue, I …

I'm in a bit of a fix. I've finally decided on a course for university - medical chemistry and/or pharmaceutical science/chemistry. Here's my problem: Logically, my chemistry teacher should right my reference for UCAS, but I feel like she doesn't know my potential well enough, and she doesn't know the UCAS system well enough either. I should probably mention - I missed about a term of school this year due to personal issues. On the other hand, my English teacher comes from London, is very familiar with the UCAS reference system and has taught me for four years (including right now), and I'm doing my EE with her - as opposed to my chemistry teacher (who I've lost two terms…

Hey guys! I have an offer at university of Edinburgh for 34 points, however I'm afraid I'm going to miss it by one point (worst case scenario.) I was wondering if anyone knew the university's policy on this? Is it possible for me to still get in? I've heard from other students that they might be nicer because they want international students, especially from countries outside of EU because we pay full tuition. I don't know how true this is. What do you guys think?

Hey everyone! According to the St. Andrews scholarship website, applicants for the Scholarship in Honour of Their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (wow that's lengthy) should have been informed today of the status of their application. I know that there is only one recipient of the scholarship out of every applicant from all over the world ... however I thought that unsuccessful applicants would have received a friendly email letting them know. Has anyone heard anything from St. Andrews about this award? Or is anyone on here perhaps the lucky recipient?! If so .... congratulations!!! Thanks

I think I've pretty much narrowed down my choices to exeter and durham or exeter and bath. This is for civil engineering. The main question is between durham and bath, but I can use exeter as an indirect route to help in my decision. I prefer durham to exeter because of the collegiate system. So if I compare Bath and Exeter and I find that I prefer Exeter, then it's simple because my to firm choices will be Exeter and Durham - if i meet the grade for durham, the I'll go for durham; if not, then exeter. Some complication will arise if I prefer Bath (even between these two, I can't decide which one I prefer). In which case, I will have to look at by how much I prefer Bath o…

I'm looking at applying to some of the UK's top unis, and was wondering if it make that much of a boost to your application? Will it be a deciding factor to whether or not I'm accepted? Is it worth going through all that extra responsibility, time and effort?

I've got a few questions about architecture in UK. 1. How to prove that I'm interested in architecture, if I've decided not to take visual arts as a school subject? 2. Does a second foreign language strengthen an application? (for any course, not only architecture) 3. What is considered to be valuable in a portfolio? How to make a succesful portfolio? What do you know about portfolios? (In Poland , for example, realism of drawing is required, and good composition, perspective, construction, wide knowledge of geometry, understanding space, and in the end being original) 4. Does HL Math make an application stronger? And Physics?

Hey all! So I attended a talk with some college counsellors yesterday and while this lecture really stuck to US University applications, they really emphasised the importance of a balanced profile between academics, ECs and sports. I have the academics and ECs down and I used to be in the school handball team until last year, but I took a step back since I have so much other stuff going on now that I'm in the IB. I mean I run and exercise to keep fit but that's obvi not like being in a team sport. Can my Indian classical dance training count as an equivalent to a Sport? It definitely takes up a lot of energy and time and stamina! Please let me know because I can always re…

Hi all, Asking a question on behalf of a student who is currently in IB1 in Singapore and will be required to do 2 year compulsory military service upon completion of IB Diploma. What is the normal procedure for this kind of situation? I understand UK universities do not take deferrals of more than one year. Should the student wait until receiving final IB grades and apply then with 1 year deferred entry? Do UCAS make any sort of exceptions for these compulsory service situations? Any information on similar situations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have received my conditional offers for civil engineering and it's almost time to select my two firm choices. My insurance university will be Exeter which wants a 5 in Science HL, 5 in Maths HL and a 34 overall. The thing is, for the other unis, the conditions are slightly high and I am afraid I won't be able to make it. Bath wants a 6 in HL maths, 5 in SL Eng and 36 overall; Edinburgh and Durham (for general engineering) want 38 and 666 in HL subjects and Edinburgh wants an additional 4 in English. Glasgow wants a 34 with a 666 at HL. For the Scottish unis, they are offering me point of entry two and I believe (though I'm not sure) that I should be able to go down…

So the choices I applied to for law were Warwick (38), Reading (37), Southampton (36), Exeter (36), York (36). I got my offers through of a surprising 35 from Reading, 36 with 18 at HL for Southampton, 36 from Exeter, and an interview at York, which hasn't been done yet. Haven't heard from Warwick at all. Now, Warwick has been my top choice and I loved it when I visited. However, Southampton cut in at a close second for me upon visiting, however I recently attended the post offer day. Everyone seemed so happy there, and I really liked the place, the facilities, and the staff I met. I also have an extra convenience with Southampton as it's fairly close to home (about half …

What are some of the university courses from the top UK universities that I can take if I wish to pursue a career in product design/industrial design? From the top of my head I can think of related courses such as mechanical/electrical engineering and possibly architecture. Fine art seems to have less in the design aspect of things. The reason I ask this is because most top universities do not offer product design as a course. What I hope to do is perhaps take an engineering or architecture course as an undergrad then decide which field I wish to specialise in. I could then perhaps find a design course as a grad. Is this plausible and a good option? What are your thought…

Any help would be appreciated! I have some questions regarding extra-curricular activities in applying to top UK universities: 1) Is is true that UK universities will only care about extra-curricular activities related to the subject in which you are applying to? Does this include work experience? 2) If I am applying for an arts subject, would admissions care about leadership roles such as student council president, head boy etc? 3) Does it matter if I happen to be excellent at a sport? Would it improve my chances of receiving an offer if I am part of a sports team? Or a sport which I am excellent at in which I intend to pursue at the university (not talking about a sc…

So I got my second university reply yesterday, the first being a typical southampton law offer of 36 with 18 at HL, but my offer from Reading wasn't quite what I expected. It says on the website they ask for 37 points, and I applied above that, and got back an offer for 35 points! Not complaining, but I've been trying to analyse their thinking, and at the moment am inclined to think that they would like me to choose them as my insurance as opposed to all the 36 point choices I have and so made a lower offer to tempt me. I was wondering if it was common for universities to make a surprising or odd move with the offers. Another example would be my friend who shot for Cambri…

Hello all, Just sort of scamming around at different universities and the same question keeps popping up into my head.... How on earth do international students pay for the costs? Looking at colleges like Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, Warwick, St. Andrews., all of them are around 40k a year in Dollars... So how can I pay for that? It says loans and stuff are from the government if your from the EU but for international students you have to pay upfront?? Someone please tell me I am an idiot and that there is a way...

I have just received my IB scores yesterday, a score of 39... I applied to Economic History(not as competitive as other courses apparently..) at LSE, which requires a minimum score of 37, with 6,6,6 for HL subjects.. Though my total score has exceeded this minimum requirement by 2 points, I got 5,6,7 for my HL subjects.. (the 5 is for HL music...) Am I completely hopeless since I missed 1 mark for the HL subjects? Or does it really depends? Really want to get into LSE...

Hey fellow Survivors, I wish to study medicine in Europe, however, i am unaccustomed to what they require. Here are the Subjects that i have applied for the coming exam (November, I'm Aussie): HL Geography HL Music HL Chemistry SL Maths SL English SL Chinese With these subjects, what UK University can i get into? Hey guys, Right now i'm thinking about college in the UK specifically Cambridge. Currently I am in an IB program here in the States class of 2015. My question to everyone is, do I have a realistic shot at getting an offer... not an interview an offer. Because I have lived in the Dominican Republic for 2 years, El Salvador for 8 months, Bolivia for 6 months and soon Peru for 2 months, I am fluent in both English and Spanish. I would not consider myself naturally genius in math or science, however in politics, and international topics I can hold my own. For me I am willing to do whatever it takes. Right now before I begin IB (which is Junior and Senior year) I am taking 2 …

Do they base on what they see the few months before the exam or on what they saw when you started IB? Do they take into account improvements. Forexample if I was pulling 5's at a subject the 1st IB yr and then 7's the second IB yr would teacher give me a 6 to even it out? Or a 7?

So usually what happens is that you give the universities you want to apply to to your IB coordinator, who sends them off with your predicted grades. However, IB results for this timezone comes out earlier than when you would apply for universities in Europe if I'm not mistaken, so does anyone know exactly how this works? Thanks and much love

Hi all! I'm planning to apply for International relations in UK as a EU citizen from Sweden. St Andrews and LSE are both on top of my list, while Edinburgh is my safety choice. As I am not aware of many other unis with a good International Relations programme, I was just going to see if anyone of you have any suggestions or comments. Preferably Scottish unis due to the tuition fees. As for predicted grades, all my teachers haven't given me one yet, but I'm guessing that the total is going to be around 41-43. All advice is welcome

You know how for the UCAS personal statement, it is advisable for you to just apply to one degree so that they know that this is really what you want? The thing is, I can't decide what to apply for and I have more or less 'narrowed down' (sort of) to engineering. However, the engineering is VERY varied (sports engineering, engineering with architecture, mechanical engineering with product design, and possibly renewable energy if I can find a course) and I am not sure if I can write a personal statement that links them all together. What should I do?

One thing i don't understand about the universities is that 1. they accept you based on your predicted grades? what if you get a bad grade in final exam which is likely the case so then do the universities reject your application? 2. If your application gets rejected because you've scored low on predicted grades but then you get a better final grade, can you apply again over the summer although the deadline has been exceeded? How does the system work in UK? I'm very much concerned because my grades are fairly low and now that i have started working really hard, i have a feeling that i will get a better final score (when all IAs etc pump up my grades). So I am applying to 5 mechanical engineering courses in the UK, all of which requiring a 36 with 6 in maths and physics. The problem I have is that, you guessed it, I currently have a 35 overall and a 5 in maths...the crucial subject. Now I have looked around and pretty much all the universities (excluding the really "bad ones") want the above mentioned score. I will be, however, most likely applying with my score on Monday and just hope for he best. Are UK unis really that strict or can they be lenient when it comes to things like these? I think my PS was quite good and hope that I came across as determined. I applied to these unis in order of preference: Bath, UCL, B…

Hi. I'm an international ('overseas') student and I wanna study in the UK. But unfortunately I can't takes loans or large financial aids, and I can only rely on scholarships, which usually cover a small percentage of tuition fees, or want to to have very very high grades. I was just wondering is there actually a way that an international student could afford tuition fees, without having to work so hard (to pay them)? Something like a loan, or a great discount on the fees? PS: my grade are pretty high and I think I could somehow show that I won't be a lazy student in the university!!

So, basically, I'm predicted 38/38. I don't believe I'll get close; our school has a trend of predicting ~5 points above the actual score. Personally, I'd be tempted to let it be, however I've heard that universities often look at predicted 45s with an extra grain of salt. So, should I ask my IBC to drop the predicted score a bit? If I did so, I'd probably ask him to drop my Chem score one (as it's irrelevant to the degree) and maybe my French score one as well; they're both the subjects I see myself as most likely to lose marks at. Then again, I do have a proven academic track record, with a 7 in anticipated History SL and awards in independent external examinations. Tho…
