So I graduated this spring and have decided to apply for universities in Scotland. I'm going to study some sort of chemistry, but I need some guidance to this weird educational system. I'm not at all familiar with the British school system and will probably ask very stupid questinos, but please answer them anyway. In my country you start with doing a 3-year course leading to a bachelor's degree. After that you apply for another 2-year course, giving you a masters degree. But when I look at UCAS, it seems that you apply for one or the other and can apply directly for a master's course, if you wish. How does that work? I'm very confused. What should I apply for? Secondly, m…

Hey guys! I'm making a tough decision here and hope you guys can help me out. I'm thinking of doing 4 HL subjects in May 2011 examination session and was thinking of how the British universities treat applicants with 4 subjects on Higher Level. Do they give you an offer that includes grades from all 4 HLs (e.g. '38 points with 7 6 6 6 at Higher Level subjects') or is it - as they usually write on their websites - normal points criterion with requirements regarding only 3 HL subjects? If so, do they consider only the 3 best ones and leave the worst one out (for example if I had 7 6 6 in English, Maths and Hitory and got a 5 in German the offer '7 6 6 in HLs' would still be…

Right now, Im considering: Business and Management at Glasgow Management in combination with something, at Strathclyde Business Studies at Edinburgh Or Management at St Andrews Opinions on/ Experience of any of these Universities ( or the cities they are located in)? I suppose my goal is to find the most rewarding course, in terms of knowledge-gain, but it's really difficult to judge... Since they all try to portray their own course in the best light possible... Help me clear up some of the fog? Are there any other good business Universities in Scotland I have missed? Enlighten me!

Hi, As a Canadian citizen entering my last year of IB diploma and high school - what requirements do I need to take to apply to the UK for med? Do I need to take some sort of entrance exam (similar to how Americans have the SAT's)? If so, what is it called? And do UK universities consider the entire transcript? Or just your grade 11/12 year? Thanks for your help!

I am interested in applying Experimantal Psychology in Oxford. The thing that is bothering me is I have chinese A1 as a self-taught subject. In other words, my school is unable to give me a predicted grade on this subject... Will this lower the chance of getting an interview chance?

Hi I'm going into my second year next year and i want to study PPE at Oxford My Predicteds are: English A1 HL-6 Spanish A2 SL-6 History HL- 7 Economics HL- 7 Maths SL-7 E Systems -6 There is a TSA test to take and they said most score in the mid-high 60s, I've been practicing the test and so far I've been getting High 80s to low 90s The website says they require 39, so I'm right there but do I have a significant chance? Does EE matter to them at all? And what will they look at apart from my predicteds and Test scores? I was in the American system so I didn't do GCSEs and I had only okay grades the year before due to some health issues. Much appreciated

Hey, I'm interested in doing either PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford or IR (International Relations) at London School of Economics. Is anyone else here interested in them? Does anyone know how many points I should approximately have to be accepted? The LSE website says min. 37 and 6-6-6 from HL, but according to our coordinator this is only for them to consider you, so in reality you need more points. Does anyone know how much more?

I need some help with finding the most prestigious universities that the UK has to offer when it comes to business studies. If you have some opinions or expertise, or perhaps even some experience - I would appreciate your reply I just graduated from the IB with 38 points but with a 5 in HL business & management - A shame, since that is what I intend to study further, and many universities have HL specific requirements I'm currently considering doing a retake just to fix that chink in my armor... But will that be looked down upon, I mean when they see the retake in my admission papers? Also, when they state that 38 is the minimum, like for example Warwick does, does…

Hi. I am interested in studying Government at LSE. I graduated from IB in May 2010 and I received a total of 38 points with 766 at HL (LSE requires 37 points with 666 at HL). However, I had a few "easy" subjects like Math Studies (got a 6 in it), but I hope this won't be a problem since I've heard about other people being accepted to LSE with Math Studies (obviously then to the non-math related courses). I am applying for courses starting in September 2011. What are my chances of getting in? I am planning to study two courses in political science at Stockholm University before this. Could that be a good merit? Then I will have an IB diploma of 38 points with 766 at HL, as…

Hi everyone, I recently got my IB Diploma (hurrah!), and unfortunately I narrowly missed out on my first-choice university. While I'm still waiting for them to reply as to whether they'll be saints and still accept me, I'm faced with a slight dilemma. I did my IB at a school in England, but I live in Hong Kong. As a result, I applied to both universities in England and HK. If my first-choice university rejects me, I'm not sure whether I should choose to study in England or HK (I met all my other offers). I applied for Sociology at all of my universities; if my first-choice rejects me, I can choose to study at either the University of Bath, or the University of Hong Kong, …

Fees

Approximately how are the fees for university set out? I know most are different, but what I mean is, are the fees per semester, year, half year, or the full 4 year course/5 year/6 year? For example, Cambridge and Liverpool for their vet course have similar prices, but they do not state if it's for the whole course (for cambridge it's 6 years and liverpool 5), or for just one year, or for one semester. I've tried emailing them, but it's been nearly a week. For example Cambridge charges around 14000 pounds. It'll look like it's per year, but it hasn't been stated on their website. On an average basis, how are the fees charged? Thanks

I've got a conditional offer from the university I want to get into but I didn't fulfil their requirements. They wanted 36 points total (including bonus points) and all subjects to get at least a 5. My results are as below, do you think that I stand a chance if I called them and basically begged them to change their conditions. Do you think admission tutors may change their minds depending on the passion and desire I show? Maths HL 4 Biology HL 5 Chemistry HL 5 English A1 SL 6 Mandarin HL 6 Business and Managament SL 7 TOK C EE B points = 1 Total = 34

Hi there, I was wondering whether anyone else is applying to study Law (LLB) in the UK from the graduating class of 2011. I was looking at the requirements of various universities and although they are achievable, the low rate of entrants scares me. Is there anyone here who has applied to a law program in the UK and had been accepted? Any help/advice would be appreciated A few of the universities I was looking at included: University College London (UCL) Kings College London, Durham, Bristol, London School of Economics and Exeter

I've been on the UCAS website, and looking at the more famous universities around. However, the entry requirements and the details of the course don't exactly mean that it's a good/bad university to go into. For example, Glasgow's requirement is 32, but that doesn't mean it's a bad school. University of British Columbia's min. req. is 24, the passing grade, but that doesn't mean it's a bad uni. Does anyone know some good universities that are famous/known for their psychology course? Thanks, DP

I was planning to go to the UK for uni, and I keep seeing stuff like A-Level grades or GCSE marks. I know that I do not need to do the A level thing, but for GCSE, I know I can apply to do some subjects, but are they needed in the UK? For example, I want to pursue a career in Vet. Sciences. I have finished the IB, and now, do I need to do Biology, Chemistry etc. etc. GCSE test? Or is the IB good enough? Thank you. EDIT: somewhat off-topic: for the US, I MUST do the SAT for any university, right?

Hi, quick question. I arrived at my school last year halfway through the IGCSEs. My school is already phasing it out and doesn't stress it much, partly because it doesn't work so well with IB. I took 6 subjects and got A*A*AABB. Do I have to include this in my UCAS application? Would it be better just to omit it since it might decrease my chances of being accepted to a good uni? Thanks for any help,

I also got offers from Glasgow, Essex, Sheffield and East Anglia. Is Manchester my best choice?? I think the Uni has a good reputation but I have heard the student satisfaction is really low. Hello there, I'm new on IB Survival, so first of all I'd like to say a big Hi to everyone here. As you already know from the topic, this will be about University of British Columbia - my (hopefully) alma mater to be. Is anyone from UBC in here? D'you guys have any tips as for the admission process? I must admit I had been taking my admission to UBC for granted until it turned out I was not even invited to Cambridge (UK) interview, in spite of having predicted grades of 7 in all subjects, individual teaching at a local university and other perks like these. It was then that I started to think that getting to UBC may be not so easy, although a Cambridge student told me I ma…

London School of Economics states as its essential qualifications for the management course 'AS Level (or equivalent) Mathematics'. Does anyone know what is the corresponding level to that in the IB? And if it is a essential qualification do you think a very high grade is required from it in order to gain admission?

Hello! I am a year 12 IB student and I am starting to think about which colleges to apply to. In January, I received my first set of predicted grades which are: HL: Economics - 5 Chinese B - 7 Psychology - 5 SL: Environmental Systems - 7 English A1 - 5 Maths SL - 5 TOK/EE - AA My teachers told me that they were kind of being hard on me so I reckon these grades will improve to something like this (at least!) HL: Economics - 6 Chinese B - 7 Psychology - 6 SL: Environmental Systems - 7 English A1 - 5 Maths SL - 5 TOK/EE - AA I know UCL is one of the most toughest universities to get in, and the competition is way up ... there. Heii everyone, I'm applying to the UK for uni, and one of my five choices was the University of East Anglia, as I've heard they have a great Development Studies programme, as well as a reputable language department (I'm applying to study International Development and beginners' Spanish). I have a friend in the university who likes it a lot, so I was fairly confident about choosing it as one of my options, but recently a teacher told me that it has a reputation for "breeding left-wingers." I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing, but would anyone be able to shed some more light on the university and the general atmosphere? Thank yoooou Kiaa

I heard that the calculus courses that 1st year students take in UK universities are extremely HARD even to ex-IB math HL students, and many even find it hard to pass, so they end up trying to catch up over the holidays and summer. cuz the IB sylluabus is very narrow when it comes to calculs when compared to other programmes like the A-levels. Good day. I am currently an incoming IB Year 2 student where our schoolyear starts Aug.24. After my IB, I am very interested to apply in UK universities. I am aware that the UCAS Applications in the choices of my universities start September 15 to October 15. I have also read Aboo's thread about UCAS Applications which helped alot. However, I am not very sure whether I should start applying in 2009 or 2010 since I am a May 2010 candidate. I prefer applying through UCAS in September 2010 since then, the results of my externals will be available which will narrow my choices down. Please help me in deciding whether its better this year or next. Thank you.

Heyy everyone, I'm applying to the UK, but I'm very confused: I've been following the UCAS registration, but I don't understand the system. I'm an international student, taking IB (of course) and I graduate in 2010. So in the UK system, do i have to choose specific courses from different universities? I've researched a few universities that I would like to study at, so are you not supposed to apply only to one university? (As they do it in America etc..) And if you can, how do you do it? Because UCAS only guides you through choosing 5 courses from various colleges? I basically want to know how the system works. If anyone who understands how to apply to the UK, i would re…

The following only applies to IB students applying to the UK (which is why it doesn't make sense to others). UK My school's college counselor emailed me this website today, http://www.ucas.com/resultsandnextsteps/adjustment/facts . I thought I'd share it here since I've never heard of the scheme, and no one else I've spoken to has either. So it's not that well-known. The process is not the same as Clearing, since that's for students that don't achieve their offers. Basically it's about applying to other UK universities if you exceed your Conditional Firm offer when you get your IB results. Each year some applicants pass their exams with better results than expected. You c…

My dilemma is this: I have 3 universities to choose between. Aberdeen, Leeds and Nottingham. The choice is between Leeds and Nottingham, and they are so close that I can't decide. So what I was thinking of doing was putting Nottingham for my firm and Leeds for my insurance choice, even though they are both asking for the same amount of points (34). I honestly have no idea what I'm going to get in my exams, I'm assuming more than 34 but you never know. My reasoning behind this is that since Nottingham is ranked higher and is more prestigious, if they don't offer me a place because I don't meet the entry standards then Leeds will, as they are not so highly regarded.
