Suppose I had enough time in the exam (p2) to respond to 3 essay questions instead of two, would the examiner read all of them and choose the best two? Our biology teacher suggested doing this in order to maximise marks and I just wanted to double check if that's allowed.

Hey, my question might be pretty straightforward but it has caused some problems doing the past papers in Bio. Is cytokinesis a part of mitosis according to syllabus? Its very confusing because some books state that it is and some that it is not. While the newer textbooks say that cytokinesis occurs AFTER the cytokinesis and it is not a part of mitosis when I did the past papers (2010 or 2009 I think) there was such a question in Papers 1 and according to the answer it actually is part of mitosis. Could anyone shine some light on the topic?

I've just started the IB diploma programme and am wondering if I have made the right decision in taking SL biology over ESS. I take HL Maths, English (Lit) and Econs, and have very very very little intention of doing anything science related in future. With the "heavy" workload, SL Biology seems almost stupid to take, especially on its own since Chemistry is like the core of all sciences. However, I don't know a lot about ESS either, and how it is assessed/what the work is like, whereas I did Biology for my GCSEs (and did quite well). All I know about ESS is that it's seen as the Math Studies of the Sciences, thus seen as a "soft" subject option, and is all about the env…

I'm just working on a lab report at the moment where I have to calculate the t-test values for a set of data... I'm looking at the lengths of the internode and leaf in the Wandering Jew plant. One set has been grown in sunlight and the other has been grown in the shade. I manually calculated it the first time and got: Internodes: -27.0879671 Leaf length: -25.25046944 But then I tried again in Excel and got a different value of... Internodes: 4.97254E-48 Leaf length: 2.26466E-44 Would anyone be able to help me with interpreting these results because I've just about given up...... Thanks in advance!

Well, my entire class is doing Human Nutrition and Health and Ecology and Conservation, but I just found it too boring to do Ecology again.. So the teacher let me pick an option since I have a high average. However, I realized later that nobody really takes that option and there isn't much available online. I found some information and made notes from it, but any additional help would be really useful. Is there anyone except me taking this option at all?

I usually don't ask this type of question but do I have to answer DBQs in full sentences or are bullet point style sentences without linking words okay? I'm just wondering because of the tiny space that they give you to write.

Hi everyone, I'm going to do my extended essay in biology and I need some help. I would like to do something with fish, because I want to do experiment with animals and conditions which I have don't give me the possibilites to work with e.g. rats... However I don't actually know what can I investigate or what factors can influence their behaviours, growth, etc. Do you have any ideas for ee topic with fish or maybe do you know interesting webites, which can inspire me?

Hi, I'm fairly new here and new to the IB. A term has passed and my Biology class has received the term to do our IA. Is the assessment rubric different to chemistry. I have a really good guide for chemistry, since they are both a group 4 subject I assume they are marked on the same rubric and are structured the same. If not please tell me. Also if any one has any tips with Group 4 IAs please tell me, I would love to know. Thank you in advance

Could you tell me how my hypothesis sounds? Any unnecessary info/too much? Or not specific enough? Etc.. Ty! (PS. my teacher said you could have 2 hypothesis so i made two) If taro specimens are placed in a corn syrup solution which has a lower concentration of solute outside the taro cells than inside the cells (hypertonic solution), then the masses of the taro specimens will increase because water will move through the selectively permeable membranes of the taro cells from an area of low solute concentration outside the cell to an area of higher solute concentration inside the cell (along the concentration gradient) in a process called osmosis. If taro specimens are pla…

For lab reports in bio, for the uncertainty is it half the smallest unit used for measurement? For example, if I use cm and so the smallest unit is 1cm. Then is the uncertainty +/-0.5cm? Please can someone tell me how to do the uncertainties. Thx

Hi! I am taking Biology SL in Spanish. I have the syllabus in English, but I thought that if I could find one in spanish it would help me more to study. Then I wouldn't have to translate everything. Does anyone have a link? Or at least, how do you say syllabus in spanish? so I can google it. thanks!

I'm sure this has been answered numerous times, but I just can't find it in the search bar, so... Are you allowed to choose your own options for the examination? My teacher selected 2 that he assumed were the easiest, and while I may agree, I want to challenge myself, and perhaps even enjoy learning about something else (I don't know why, but human physiology is so interesting)! If it is possible and I do end up studying, let's say, Option H, does the teacher/IB coordinator have to approve of it before the exam? It'd be such a hassle to do that, and I can only imagine the scene both of them would pull for my wanting to be just a bit different.

My group and I are doing a water filter for our G4 Project. So, our filter is done already. Just, we have to figure out how to reduce the pH value of the water since the pH of the water produced is alkaline. Leaf litter seems to be a good material used in an aquarium though. So, can leaf litter reduce the pH value for our water filter?

Hello~ I'm planning to use different concentrations of lipase on cream milk, and then measure the pH (which it's supposed to get more acidic), but I'm not sure what concentrations I should use. Has anyone tried this or a similar lab before? at school we can't do a preliminary test (we have just one try) because of the limited resources, and I don't want to ruin it, so any suggestions would be appreciated, also related to the time I should leave them react . Thanks (excuse my bad english) :]

Hi guys, I have this crazy bio teacher and he sent out an e.mail today for us to design a lab that we are conducting on the 9th... well this is all of the info he gave us: Design a microscopy experiment where microorganisms/cells are studied. Note: you will need to focus on ideas such as comparison between different cells, measurements, physical characteristics, special processes etc. Now I don't even have a starting idea of what on earth to do.. Grateful for all tips!!!... whoever gave me the idea of taking bio HL Thanks guys!!

How does one go about expressing the uncertainty of a dimensionless unit? For Example, pH: Do I just say the water has a pH of 7, +/- 1? Or is there a unit needed after the 1?

I have an experiment in which I measure for 5 different values. I know that I should probably design in so that several trials were done for each value (5?), but as each measurement takes around 15 minutes to do, it seems a bit unrealistic to plan for an experiment that would take at least 6.5 hours; however, if I design it so that only one or two trials are made I'm worried that I'll be penalised for not having a sufficient amount of data gathered. So, how important is it to take into account the time taken for the experiment in the design?

I investigated the differences between the ability to memorize words in a quiet environment, one involving music with lyrics and one with just a melody. My teacher said I should do the matched/paired t test, but I am a bit confused...Should I do two seperate ones? One for no music vs music with lyrics and the second one for no music vs melody? If anyone knows a link to a good guide on the t test for dummies, I would appreciate it, since I am still not sure I understand what the t test shows us... Can it be done using a calculator? Also, what other mathematical processes/tests can be applied to such data? Thanks for any kind of help!

I'm doing an IA on the effect of fertilizer on the primary productivity of an aquatic plant. I'm not good at critical thinking - that's why I didn't take IB Physics or Chem! - so I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around a couple of concepts. Can someone please verify if I'm correct? Just tell me if I'm wrong, OK, because I need to do this IA: Primary productivity encompasses gross productivity and net productivity. (I'm pretty sure this is correct) Gross productivity: total photosynthetic production Net productivity: total photosynthetic production - respiration To calculate gross productivity in my IA: fertilizer group dissolved oxygen - dark bottle = gross…

I was thinking about doing a lab on how various types of music (classical, heavy metal, nature sounds, country, etc.) would affect the heart rate. My teacher thinks that I shouldn't do this lab because of the restrictions on human test subjects. She said that you can't put people in stressful situations. This is her first year and she is so overwhelmed and paranoid that IB is going to dock us points. Would IB like this lab and am I allowed to do it?

I heard from my friend and saw on the wikipedia website that IB changed the course outline for 2011 or later? I don't know if it is true or not, because I don't see anything official on the IBO site. But I'm super worried because I don't know if my teacher is actually teaching things that I need to know for my exams next year. I'm using the Pearson textbook published in 2007 (which seems kind of old to me) and I'm doing a lot of lab hours. My other friend in a more experienced IB school seems to be doing a lot less labs, so I'm just wondering if anyone out there knows about this? Thanks!!

Hello, I have encountered one thoretical issue while writting a lab report of option about neurobiology, where we did an experiment, in which we investigated a time of a reflex. Visual was the one where we saw how a ruler is falling down and we had to carch it as fast as possible. Tactile was the one when we had our eyes closed, but we slightly felt the ruler falling and we had to catch it. Perhaps somebody did the same lab and could share their ideas about which reflex should be faster? I think that visual, but as results of some people in my class vere completely different, I'm a bit lost. Help, please
