Hi there, I'm a student thats retaking biology in four days To remind myself of the subject, I read through the biology book once, taking only rudimentary notes. Later I grabbed my higher level Oxford 2009 revision guide (+ the 2007 study guide and book for my options), and plugged pretty much every fact in there into Anki (a flashcard organising or memory programme that I may write a little about once I'm done with this whole exam thing, it's really better suited for long term learning and memorisation, but it works if you want to cram as well), and have memorised pretty much everything. My question, and my worry, is the following. Is the material in the revision guide…

Hello all, I am currently reviewing biology for the up and coming IB diploma examinations, yet am struggling. I am not the best when it comes to biology , hence I was wondering if there were any techniques, or if anyone has any advice in regards to studying biology. I find that I initially grasp concepts, but have difficulty remembering them. What are the key topics to know for the IB papers (aside from all of them). Thank you, Pathos

HI - i have a bio lap due tmr, its for a DCP (data collection and processing) the thing is its my first one & all the results are entirely qualitative! there are no numbers except the uncertainty of a graduated cylinder im really confused, how do u go about processing the data & presenting it? the sylabus says use calculations or graphs but the lab isnt made for that i was thinking of showing pictures of the results. like the colour change. any suggestions? any help is appretiated! thanx!

As a method of inhibiting enzyme activity, I am testing various concentrations of CuSO4. However, I had to make these concentrations myself, and seeing as there was an uncertainty between my calculations (I had to round the amount of CuSO4+5H20 to two decimal places) and actually weighing out the amount (±0.01g), how should I calculate the uncertainty of my concentrations? In my lab report, should I mention this uncertainty, or simply just disregard it?

It would be great if you could have a look at my notes on synpatic transmission below and answer my questions... A nerve impulse reaches the end of the pre-synaptic neurone: When the axon terminal is depolarized (through Na moving in), voltage-gated calcium channels open, and calcium ions rush into the axon terminal. Inflow of calcium ions, makes vesicles of neurotransmitter move to membrane and release neurotransmitter (=Exocytose) Energy from Mitochondrion (re)form vesicles Calcium is pumped out – Neurotransmitter is broken down in the cleft (see below) and reabsorbed into vesicles Neurotransmitter diffuses across synaptic cleft and binds to receptors – when they fit, …

I really want to buy the Biology textbook by Clegg. I've heard a lot of good reviews of it. Would you recommend it? [Hopefully what I'm about to type next is okay ^^;;;] But in Australia, it needs to be specially ordered, and it's quite pricey. So I guess, I was wondering if anyone within the Sydney area had a copy they wanted to sell? Anyway, even if there isn't I'm seriously considering to purchase it, except I don't know what the content looks like. I've been trying all over the net to try and find a sample page or two, except I haven't been able to find any. So, I was wondering if anyone knew where there is perhaps a sample page or two of the book?

Our HL Bio teacher last year retired, so this year our teacher is new. I don't exactly trust what he says about things related to IB because I am not sure if he knows what he's talking about. Many times during lessons he doesn't really know. So I was wondering if I could get some advice on whether these two labs would make good IAs or not. 1. Testing Laughing and Shouting/Crying on Blood Pressure: Basically I was going to find audio clips of people laughing and of people crying. I would have 2 groups, one for laughing, one for crying. I would test their regular blood pressure first, and then test it after they have listened to the clips, and see if there's a difference.…

Is this a good Biology HL Internal Assessment lab? I am nearly done with it and I just realized that I misread my teacher's handout. It said Effects of Solutes and the Cohesion of Water, but it also said something about boiling point. So I did an experiment testing Temperature vs. Water Cohesion! I think he gave us this sheet as a guide to some ideas, but I'm afraid I have done a lab that doesn't really qualify as a good lab!

My teacher has suggested this following lab as one of our IAs. A lot of us are doubting if it will be seen as a good IA idea in the eyes of IB, probably because it seems so simple. The idea is to test the effect of a solute or solutes on the surface tension of water. I think we intend to test it by using droppers and drop water onto a coin surface until the water tension breaks. This sounds so simple; is it even a valid lab?

I really need help with my group 4 project. My class' projects had to involve a nearby river. My partner and I decided that we would take soil samples from the river itself and some from the surrounding area. Then we planned to grow 5 plants in each type of soil and see which supported life better by measuring biomasses before and after. Unfortunately, due to recent flooding in the area, the soil was a bit messed up: our samples from within the river turned into clay in about 3 weeks and the samples from the surrounding area were sand. Needless to say, the plants from the sand died in about 2 weeks and the plants from the clay died in about a month and a half. We basical…

So I did my Biology IA experiment on an invertebrate, and I tested a taxis (movement away from/towards a stimulus). The experiment worked well, and I got good data. However, now that I am writing it up I am having trouble. How can I do a statistical analysis if the only data I have is the number of organisms in each choice chamber at the end of 5 minutes. e.g. I have for trial 1: 4 in light, 6 in dark trial 2: 3 light, 7 dark etc. How can I analyze this data statistically? My teacher said IB really like line graphs, but I can't see how it would be possible for me to make one for this experiment.. thoughts? Thanks for any help!

For my IA I'm investigating the effect of differing light intensities on the rate of photosynthesis on corn plants. I was thinking of planting the plants, controlling all variables while waiting for them to sprout out of the soil, then apply the light. To do light intensity, I thought of buying a lamp or lamps and putting different watts of bulbs, like 5 10 15 and attaching a timer that would go on at the sunrise and sunset predicted for each day. Should the lights be flourescent? And would it be a more appropriate approach to change the distance of the light from the plant rather than the watts? Any other advice is welcome!

So for my photosynthesis lab I was thinking of measuring the affect that the concentration of chlorophyll has on plant growth. Liquid chlorophyll is up for sale because it's apparently a really good natural health remedy so I was thinking of putting that into the water or something. Is this a good idea? Otherwise, I was thinking of just doing concentration of salt in water in the Elodea plants, but will that score me good marks? It's one of the most generic topics I think. Thanks.

OK, so I'm a tad confused as to how all our Bio pracs are assessed. I'm aware we have to complete 60 hours of practical over the two years, not all assessed, but do we have to hand all the non-assessed ones in for a mark? Only I'm sure some of my non-assessed just consisted of computer database searches and what-not, and I am also sure not all of my non-assessed sheets have been handed in to my tutor. Does this affect me a lot, as an individual, or does my tutor only need a few examples from some students to prove the full 60 hours have been done? Are the 60 hours monitored over the whole class, or for each student individually? Also, I know that 3 examples of assessed…

I've got an urgent question. Presence of starch in various specimens can be revealed by adding Lugol's solution to them. It (potassium iodide if I'm not wrong) reacts somehow with starch (actually how?) and turns the specimen dark blue. Now, the question is wheather this reaction is reversible or not? I mean if I add saliva (which contains an enzyme amylase decomposing starch) to a starch specimen (e.g. a piece of a potato) treated with Lugol's, will it still decompose the starch (and thus make the blue colour disappear) or will starch structure be distorted by Lugol's so that the amylase won't work? Any help would be appreciated.

I've got to write a Design part of Lab Report, mainly come up with a research on proteins. Of course it's got to obey all these rules you know like being realistic and possible to conduct in a school lab. It seems quite simple (proteins, denaturation, eggs, blah, blah) but when it comes down to it I can't think of anything good. I'd appreciate your help, maybe someone has already done sth like that?

I was wondering about how exactly the IA lab component works for Biology HL. According to my teacher, our IA mark, other than the 6% that will come from Group 4 and manipulative skills, will apparently comprise of our two best labs. These labs will then be up for moderation. However, what I've discerned from my chem class is that our best marks from each section (DE, DCP and CE) will be submitted as our IA marks as opposed to the complete labs themselves. For example, if I got 6/6 on DCP for one lab but I got 5/6 on the CE section and then for another lab I got 5/6 on DCP but 6/6 on CE, then for my IA marks, I could simply use the best marks for each section out of all th…

Us HL Biology students have been feeling really iffy towards our new teacher, because he doesn't seem to have a structure to his class or doesn't know what he's talking about. Anyways, Can anyone tell me or send me a link to where I can find out all the requirements needed to pass HL Biology? Mostly the Topics that we must cover for the IB Exam and how the IA works. I just want to make sure everything is on track. We're all quite worried.
