My teacher said that it is hard for non-native speakers (those whose English isn't good) to get a good great on the exams. My English isn't good and English is my second language. I've been learning English for only few years. I really need to get at least a "6" in biology SL. If I continue to study hard for the exams, is it possible to get 6 in bio SL?

hey so i am doing a lab on the effects of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis i have taken a clamp stand which i have attached a bulb to then i have placed a measuring cylinder 3.5cm away from the bulb. In the measuring cylinder i have placed a stalk of a plant, that has a stem cut open, and filled the measuring cylinder with tap water up to 50ml. i have then proceeded to watch and count the number of oxygen bubbles that come out from inside the stem of the plant. My teacher told me today (after i completed 20 of my 25 trials) that the lab is too simplistic and the IB will not accept it and i will get a P for my design. I was wondering how true is that? She clai…

Hey all, I just answered a PM from someone asking for Bio tips/advice/help etc and it could have some useful information for you other students. It's mainly for Biology (it applies to both HL and SL) but has values that can be applied to the whole of the IB. " Hey As far as HL bio goes, it's A LOT more content than SL. I'd say it's probably the biggest difference content-wise in regards to most of the other subjects. So be sure before being fully committed to HL. That being said, it's definitely possible! I recommend: LOTS of revision and LOTS of memorization. Biology is pretty much all about memorisation. Which is good, because it means it's a lot of regurgitati…

I want to do an IA that involves the permeability of membranes but that may be difficult seeing as if I use the usual process of osmosis I won't be able to actually calculate the permeability of the membrane because I won't know what's infiltrating the cell. At first I was going to examine the permeability of the membranes of different objects (carrots, potatoes, etc) but I doubt this will work. My teacher told me to see if perhaps there was a correlation between the rate of osmosis and the growth of a cell and try to test that and I've been researching for days but I can't come up with a reasonable experiment Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Any help is great…

Hey we're doing a design lab and it is supposed to be about Reaction time or memory and I choose reaction time because I find that to be more interesting! But I am not sure if the question is good or not and I just need some thoughts from other IB students; How does the reaction time of a human being change when using the right or left hand? is it good or is the changing factor not really biology - material? Thanks!

Hi, I'm a new member. I do Biology SL, and my focus is in Nutrition and Neurobiology and Behaviour for the exams. I am freaking out because I sit here and try to study, and I rally don't know how to. All the material is so overwhelming that I can't seem to find where to start studying. If any of you are doing Bio SL with one or both of the same focuses, could you please share your methodology for preparing for the exam? Thank you.

Hi, I was wondering... is it enough just to study the biology syllabus for the hl exams? (my teacher just based her notes on that anyway =\ ) I'm worried that there would be new things on the exam that are unfamiliar to me. Also, about how many hours should I spend studying? I know it differs with everyone, but I'd like a range so I could try to finish up by a certain time and move on to other subjects (like history ) :') I'd really appreciate your help/tips-thank you ! ^u^

Yo! So, let me get down to business. My Biology lab work or coursework will be using a factor - which mine will be Substrate Concentration - that affects an enzyme - which my teacher has given us Lipase to work on Apparently, I am not that clear with what is what and how does that affect that and what can I use to experiment on... That is my current problem. (I know, shame on me for not listening to my teacher during class) I tried reading the book, but it explains how it reacts and it is rather irrelevant for the information I need to get this experiment going... So, as of the moment, could anyone of you guys, explain that to me? Basically, How can my chosen factor af…

Bio doesn't interest me T^T It makes me fall asleep it's just rote learning for me, so I find it extremely hard to enjoy. Because I don't enjoy, I find it hard to listen in class and because I don't listen, I stress myself during exam times....... Ughh how can I motivate myself to study for bio? I have my bio exam on everything from the syllabus (including options) in 2 days, and yet I'm still procrastinating on ibsurvival........ I procrastinate because I'm scared of facing the reality that I don't know half of the contents that I have to know. T^T Is there anyone out there who's in a similar situation? I'm stumped. HELP!

We're on topic 4 now and we're doing an IA on variation on the human body. Collecting samples from various sources and looking at the variation. I was thinking of comparing ethnicity and age to the distance between eyes, across the nose bridge (Caucasian=farther distance than Asian; younger children=farther distance than teenagers) Would this make a good IA? I'm not sure what to measure.. the distance between eyes thing is just interesting to me, but could I write a good bio IA on that?

So, I'm supposed to handing in a rough outline of a Design task that I would do on Continuous Variation. I don't know what to do really. There's so much and I'm so confused. Basically, it has to be something that is polygenic inheritance and/or environmental factors affecting it. I was thinking something to do with eye colour or finger prints, however, some websites say that fingerprints and eye colour is discrete variation while others say it's continuous... Anyone know? Also, I was thinking that if I did leaf sizes what would I compare it to? like if I got 50 sets of data for one leaf and measured their length, what am I comparing it to exactly?! AAAH! I'm so confused.…

Hey, My Biology has instructed the class to do a lab report on assaying enzymes. But the problem is that half the class don't understand what is assaying enzymes and the whole class don't know how to start of a design lab. And if we do ask the teacher, she wont help eventually. So, i am in a slight fix here. Any of you have anything to help out would be much appreciated on the behalf of my class and me! Thanks!

Hey guys I recently did a photosynthesis experiment where I varied the light colour using different coloured cellophane, and tested for a change in pH. I'm pretty sure that in photosynthesis because carbon dioxide is used up, the water should become less acidic and hence the pH should rise, but in my experiment all of my pH values dropped. I can't really think of why this could have happened. Does this mean it's going through respiration? Thanks!

I have several ideas for my IA and would like advice on whether or not I will be able to get a good grade using them 1. The effect of caffeine on seed germination (I've yet to decide on the type of seed-most likely a pea or bean variation) .2. The effect of caffeine on the growth of E. coli. Another idea I've been bouncing around is the effect of caffeine on seedling growth. However, finding pure caffeine is proving to be a problem so I may change chemicals. Does anyone have advice-about staying away from plants or using a certain type of seed or anything? Thanks!!!

This is my final subject choice I have to make when it comes to IB. So I have a few questions for you people with information on both, if you don't mind. Is the Bio SL workload hard? I mean, do you spend hours doing lab reports and stuff. If you know both, how does the workload compare to ESS? How are the courses similar? Which is the easier subject to get a 7 in, according to you? Will my application be frowned upon in university if I did not take a "proper" science like Bio? I am pursuing a career in International Relations/Law/Politics and finally, Which would you recommend, personally, as either a Bio or ESS student? Thanks alot!

I've spent an entire two weeks studying for my Biology mock, for hours every day! I wrote notes from almost every resource I have, whether it be class worksheets or the two Biology books we have. I studied them to no end, I cannot begin to stress on that part! I even pulled a couple of all-nighters the week before the exam just studying and memorizing the terms. I even practiced drawing the structures over a dozen times on my sketchbook. I seriously, seriously studied the hardest I ever could. I went to the exam absolutely confident I'd at least, at least get a 5. And what do I get? A freaking 3! Now, my problem isn't the fact that I almost failed. I don't stress myself o…

For the manipulative variable, what does it mean by having five levels? For my internal assessment, the experiment is about how osmosis affects an egg. I'm thinking I have six different manipulative variables: testing for osmosis in eggs with and without shell in hot, cold and normal temperature of water in an isotonic solution. Do the following count as five manipulations? 1) Shelled - cold water 2) Shelled - hot water 3) Shelled - normal temp. water 4) Not shelled - cold water 5) Not Shelled - hot water 6) Not shelled - normal temp. water Thanks

okay, i posted something like this a few weeks ago and this time, i actually finished the experiment. The lab had to do with the effect of sustrate concentration(hydrogen peroxide) on enzyme activity. In my case, the substrate was h2o2 and the enzyme was fresh liver which was blended. -> you can see the enzyme activity by testing the amount of oxygen produced. Here is the problem though... i predicted that the amount of oxygen produced will increase as the substrate concentration increase, but it turned out that the highest amount of oxygen was produced when the substrate concentration(h2o2) was around 7.5%. My concentrations were 30% , 15%, 7.5%, 3% and 0% Can anyo…

Recently we were assigned an IB bio lab that we design that tests 'factors affecting, say, heart rate, or lung volume (etc...) ', but the thing is, how do you come up with a 'good', or sufficiently detailed title, and and equally 'out of the box' experiment? b/c IB marks you on creativity as well as one complexity of design, so I'm just confused as to how exactly to do this suggestions would be greatly appreciated~

Hello .. I have a lab to submit and i really need help in suggestions about how to process the data that i have. This investigation was carried in two different areas by comparing population size of mollusks in a polluted and non-polluted area. We had to collect 50 from each area making a total of 100 mollusks. Then, we had to measure their length and compare the ones in the polluted with the ones in non-polluted. I cannot process the data because i can't put it in a graph nor chart, if i only have 1 variable which is polluted or non-polluted. What do I do? Any suggestions on how to process the data ( 50 for polluted and 50 for non-polluted mollusks) ? Thanks PS: The …
